MEADOW BRIDGE -- Martha Jane Brown, 73, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999 at her home following a long illness.
Born July 26, 1925, at Hominy Falls, she was the daughter of the late Albin and Maude Thomas Hellems.
Mrs. Brown was a homemaker, devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was of the Freewill Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Marie Brown; and a brother, Robert Lee Hellems.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, the Rev. Huling Paris Brown; two daughters, Janet O'Dell and her husband, Douglas, of Elkton, Md., and Shelby Ennis and her husband, Jay, of Meadow Bridge; four grandsons, Randy and Jeffrey O'Dell, both of Elkton, Md., Jason and Jeremy Ennis, both of Meadow Bridge; a granddaughter, Natasha Ennis of Meadow Bridge; two great-granddaughters, Mandee and Amy O'Dell; two great-grandsons, J.D. and Sean O'Dell; three sisters, Opal Walton and Ruby Sears, both of Snow Hill, and Alta Bays of Cumming, Ga.; and two brothers, Harry Hellems of Snow Hill and Clell Hellems of Columbus, Ohio.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Smathers Funeral Home Chapel, Rainelle, with the Revs. Charles Donaldson and Tom Shaver officiating. Burial will follow in the Spruce Grove Cemetery, Mount Nebo.

Edna Virginia Claytor, 86, of Daniels, died at 4:40 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.
Born Dec. 28, 1912, at Blue Jay, she was the daughter of the late Elijah Webb and Anne Campbell Webb.
Mrs. Claytor was a homemaker and former employee of the U.S. Postal Service at Daniels Post Office. She was a member of Daniels Missionary Baptist Church and had lived most of her life in the Daniels area.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Claytor; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Habeck; and a brother, Glenn Webb.
Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Maloney of Fairfax, Va.; a sister, Hazel M. Richmond of Daniels and two grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with Pastor Greg Mullis officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

LAYLAND -- Myrtle E. Irvin, 74, of Chestnut Knob Road, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.
Born March 21, 1924, at Royal, she was the daughter of the late Flura B. and Sarah Smith.
Mrs. Irvin was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde Smith and Stanley Smith.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Eldridge E. Irvin; two daughters, Barbara Avis and Brenda Kessler, both of Highland Mountain, Layland; three sons, Ellis Irvin of Rainelle, Arnold Irvin of Danese and Alfred Irvin of Layland; four sisters, Hester Adkins and Dorothy Grubb, both of Layland, June Pennington of Danese, and Patricia Adkins of Mount Hope; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

James Lee Lilly, 77, of Crab Orchard, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at his home following a long illness.
Born Oct. 26, 1921, at Tamroy, he was the son of the late Ocal Doss and Lelona Gray Lilly.
Mr. Lilly was a retired master mechanic and worked for Curtis Candy in Chicago. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II and attended Glen View Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ocal R. Lilly; a brother, Lacy A. Lilly.
Mr. Lilly was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Arlene Adams Lilly; two sons, Harold E. Lilly and his wife, Mary, of Brementon, Wash., and James J. Lilly of Crab Orchard; a daughter, Barbara Lee Soalfield and her husband, Rod, of Kent, Wash.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Cordelia Belle Marshall, 68, of 123 Grant Street, Beckley, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.
Born Nov. 20, 1930, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Archie Stevenson and Lucille Stevenson.
Mrs. Marshall was a retired employee from Pinecrest Hospital.
She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, where she was also a member of No. 1 Choir, served on the Pastor's Aid Committee and served in various local clubs and auxiliaries.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Neal Marshall, on Oct. 1, 1993; and a son, Jack Ricardo Marshall.
Survivors include a son, Douglas Neal Marshall II of Beckley; two daughters, Cordelia Elizabeth Mason and her husband, Ronald of Beckley, and Shelia Verl Hunt and her husband, George, of Dunbar; four grandchildren, Ira, April and Ronald Mason, all of Beckley, and Stephen Hunt of Dunbar; two great-grandchildren, Marques and Nadajah, both of Beckley; a brother, Henry Thomas and his wife, Catherine, of Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Lewis R. Barry K. Morgan
OCEANA -- Barry Kent Morgan, 40, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, in a Man hospital following a sudden illness.
Born Oct. 28, 1958, at Welch, he was the son of Herbert Hoover Morgan and Hilda Mae Davis Morgan of Elk Lick.
Mr. Morgan was a lifelong resident of Wyoming County and a former coal miner with U.S. Steele at Pinnacle. He was co-owner of Morgan Construction with his twin brother, Larry, and was a member of Clear Fork Valley Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a grandfather, Maloney Morgan; a grandmother, Arminta Morgan; and a father-in-law, William A. McClellan.

Rev. Clarence E. Ratcliff
WARSAW, Ind. -- The Rev. Clarence Earl Ratcliff, 83, formerly of Hinton, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, in a Warsaw care home following a long illness.
Born July 22, 1915, in Smith Center, Kan., he was the son of the late Charles and Henrietta Alice Johnson Ratcliff.
The Rev. Ratcliff had been a resident of Warsaw since 1995. He was former pastor of the Mt. Olivet Church, where he was also the director of the camp, for 10 years. He was ordained by the Christian Nation Church.
He was a former school psychologist for Jackson County Board of Education in Michigan, retiring in 1975. He was a graduate of Michigan State University with a master's degree in psychology.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Ratcliff; and an infant sister, Evelyn.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Anna Lois Harris Ratcliff of Warsaw, Ind.; a daughter, Ruth Brandt and her husband, Jim, of Bradenton, Fla.; two sons, Paul Ratcliff of Toccoa, Ga., and Donald Ratcliff and his wife, Brenda, of Toccoa, Ga.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Rev. ALDERSON -- Forrest Henry Shelton, 82, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at his home following a long illness.
Born May 22, 1916, near Alderson, he was the son of the late William G. and Margaret Mitchell Shelton.
Mr. Shelton was a retired carpenter foreman, having retired in 1975 from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Alderson, after 20 years of service. He has been a member of the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, since 1970 where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Anna "Joanne" Smith and two brothers, Fred Shelton and Ralph Shelton.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret H. PRINCETON - Sylvia Madeline Conner, 68, of 100 Raleigh St., went home to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, May 5, 1999, after a long illness.
Born March 27, 1931, at Gilliam, she was the daughter of the late Leonard William and Fanny Florence Walk Alley.
Mrs. Conner was affiliated with the Baptist faith, was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting and making crafts. She was a longtime resident of Covel, Wyoming County, before moving to Mercer County.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Gilbert and Molly Taylor.

Born Feb. 5, 1911, in Tashia, Va., she was the daughter of the late Willie Hall and Minnie Fuller Hall.
Mrs. Corpening was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Lester, where she was president of the Missionary Society and a member of the Deaconess Board.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel I. Corpening, in 1979; one brother; and one sister.

Mary Giompalo, 80, of 107 Edwards St., Beckley, died Thursday, May 6, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.
Born Dec. 18, 1918, in War, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Kish Cook.
Mrs. Giompalo owned and operated, along with her husband, the former Giompalo Butcher Shop.
She was formerly employed by Purity Maid Bakery. She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post No. 4326 and Beckley Moose Lodge No. 1606.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Giompalo, in 1984.
Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Kopcha of Beckley; a brother, Johnny Cook of Radcliff; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Kincaid was a retired machinist for J.J. Tourek in Chicago and a member of the AFL-CIO in Chicago.

Born Feb. 5, 1923, in Comfort, she was the daughter of the late William Cleveland and Belva Brown Mays.
Mrs. Ratcliff had been a resident of Hinton for the past 26 years and had lived most of her life in Fayette County.
She was a charter member of Hinton Church of God and was a retired employee of the Summers County Board of Education, where she worked as a cook at Riverview and Hinton Area elementary schools.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Ratcliff; four brothers, Lionel Lee, Cecil, Estel and Joshua Mays; and a sister, Annie Mays Painter.

Willie G. Stanley
JUMPING BRANCH - Willie Garnet Stanley, 94, died Thursday, May 6, 1999, in a Hinton hospital.
Born March 20, 1905, at Mount View, she was the daughter of the late William Lewis Basham and Rebecca Lilly Basham.
Mrs. Stanley was a homemaker and a member of Primitive Baptist Church. She had been a resident of Jumping Branch for 10 years and was a lifelong resident of Summers County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Stanley; two brothers; and four sisters.
Survivors include two sons, James Freddie Stanley of Hinton and Roy Dolphus Stanley and his wife, Donna, of Huntington; a daughter, Rose Conner of Jumping Branch; a brother, Mack Basham of Cool Ridge; two sisters, Zanzie Cole of Mount View and Elizabeth Lester of Daniels; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. Elmo Alderman officiating. Burial will follow in Mount View Cemetery, Cool Ridge.

HUNTINGTON - Sammy B. Thomas, 76, formerly of Peterstown, died Friday, May 7, 1999, at his home.
Born on Dec. 23, 1922, in Peterstown, he was the son of the late Annie Craig and James W. Thomas.
Mr. Thomas was a self-employed contractor and a member of Free Will Baptist Church, Huntington.
He was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Lorene Brewer Thomas; a daughter, Joyce Thomas Dudding of Pembroke, Va.; three stepdaughters, Donetta Shrum and her husband, Robbie, Loretta Koch and Tammy White and her husband, Matt; a brother, Joe Thomas of Peterstown; a sister, Annie Pearl Smith of Lindside; a granddaughter, Candra C. Harris and her husband, John; three great-grandchildren, Heather, Hannah and Hunter; one stepgranddaughter, Paige; two stepgrandsons, Justin and Ryann; and one stepgreat-grandson, Matthew.
Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, with Minister Henry Conley officiating. Burial will follow in Williams Cemetery, near Peterstown.
