Lynn E. 'Eddie' Adkins
Lynn E. "Eddie" Adkins, 69, of Beckley, died Thursday, April 17, 2003, following a short illness.
Born Dec. 5, 1933, in Fayette County, he was the son of the late Eddie and Mary Hall Adkins.
Mr. Adkins was a Christian and a retired coal miner, having last worked for Beckley Coal Mining Co. He was a member of the UMWA.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Linda L. Radford Adkins; a son, Mark E. Adkins of Beckley; a daughter, Debra Gunnoe and husband, Terry, of Oak Hill; a grandson, Adam Gunnoe of Oak Hill; four brothers, John R. Adkins and wife, Brenda, Billy Joe Adkins and wife, Lottie, Roy Adkins and wife, Sheila, and Jackie "Hagar" Adkins and wife, Carolyn, all of Piney View; four sisters, Ruth Gullian and husband, Melvin, of Lanark, Wilma Semsick of Beckley, Rose Mary Berry and husband, Joe, of Beckley and Julie Sader and husband, Sam, of Crab Orchard; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with the Rev. Gene Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

DAVY - Evelyn Cannoy, 61, of Briar Creek, passed away Friday, April 18, 2003, at St. Luke's Hospital, Bluefield.
Born March 19, 1942, in Welch, she was the daughter of the late Fred Workman and Mary Hart Workman Jarrells.
She had been a resident of Briar Creek for the past 25 years. She was a homemaker, loving mother and beloved grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Cannoy Sr.
Survivors include her dearly loved companion, Donald Bishop of Briar Creek; a daughter, Blanche E. Douglas and husband, Tony, of Bluefield; two sons, James A. Cannoy Jr. and wife, Lada, of Advance, N.C., and Billy R. Cannoy and wife, Dianna, of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren, Brianna Cannoy, Chandler Cannoy, Dakota Cannoy, Montana Cannoy and Anthony "Spanky" Douglas; three brothers, James H. Eleanor H. Clark
Eleanor H. Clark, 76, of Midway, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2003, at a Beckley area hospital following a long illness.
Born Jan. 10, 1927, at Dan, McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Seaton and Ocie Wells Helton.
Mrs. Clark was a homemaker and a former employee for W.T. Grant Co. She spent endless hours of volunteer work at nursing homes, and she was a faithful member for many years at Freewill Baptist Church, Soak Creek.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pershing Clark, in 1988; a daughter, Brenda Carol Clark, in 1946; and a brother, Eugene Helton.
Survivors include a daughter, Judith Bowman and husband, Ronnie W., of Beckley; a son, Jim Clark of Lafollette, Tenn.; grandchildren, Ronnie Scott Bowman and Marie Cuneo of Charlotte, N.C., Melissa Kay Plumley and husband, Tom, of Charlotte and Brian Clark of St. Paul, Va.; great-grandchildren, Bryce Plumley, Seth Plumley and Raleigh Clark; a brother, Helmer Helton of Louisiana; four sisters, Macie Proffitt and husband, Marvin, of Midway, Loeida Smith of Abingdon, Va., Dixie Osborne of Drill, Va., and Shirley Jackson of Honaker, Va.; and very special nieces and nephews.

Lester J. Compton
WYOMING - Lester Jean Compton, 65, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 16, 2003, in a Bluefield hospital following a sudden illness.
Born April 3, 1938, in Pikeville, Ky., he was the son of the late King and Warena Justus Compton.
Mr. Compton was a 42-year resident of Wyoming County. He attended Truth Assembly Church, Glen Fork.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Lester Dewayne Compton and Daniel Gene Compton.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Bonnie Roberts Compton; a son, William Darrell Compton and his wife, Lora, of Wyoming; a daughter, Pamela Lucille Kinser and her husband, Bill, of Wyoming; two special daughters, Samantha Webb Compton of Wyoming and Janice McKinney and her husband, Shawn, of Oneco, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer and Daniel Compton, Lonnie and Kenneth Orndorff, Samuel Compton, Rebecca Sizemore, Justin Bishop, Wendel May and Candice and Brandon Hess; and two great-grandchildren, Samantha Brooke and James Henry Sizemore.
Service was 11 a.m. Saturday at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Sammy Francis officiating. Burial followed in Compton Family Cemetery, Skin Fork.

Harlan Cook
ALDERSON - Harlan Lacy Cook, 67, formerly of Kingman, Ariz., died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division, following a long illness.
Born Jan. 19, 1936, in Wyoming County, he was the son of Romeo E. Cook of Alderson and the late Garnet Ferguson Cook.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Wilson Cook; and a sister, Joyce Lee Toler.
Mr. Cook was a retired installation foreman, having retied from Citizens Utilities, Kingman, after 30 years of service. He was also a former employee of Chicago Bell Telephone Co.
Mr. Cook was a veteran, having served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1957 with three years in Germany. He was of the Christian faith, was a member of the Elks Lodge in Kingman and enjoyed bowling, softball, golf, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his father, Romeo E. Cook of Alderson; three daughters, Regina Findley and husband, Bill, of Casa Grande, Ariz., Tammy Lynn Geddes of Kingman and Gloria Stevens and husband, Chris, of Kingman, Ariz.; a brother, James Cook and wife, Shirley, of Brunswick, Ga.; a sister, Janice Toler of Alderson; a half brother, Romeo E. Cook Jr. of Beckley; six grandchildren, Timothy Findley and Billy Ray Findley, both of Casa Grande, and Michael Harlan Stevens, Tamara Heart Stevens, Tatum Louise Geddes and Tanner Douglas Geddes, all of Kingman; a great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Alvie Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Alderson Cemetery.

Ann Lonker
Ann Lonker, 101, of Beckley, formerly of Charleston, died Friday, April 18, 2003, at her home following a long illness.
Born Sept. 20, 1901, in Mabscott, she was the daughter of Croatian immigrants John and Frances Studajhur Lonker.
Ann was raised in Beckley where she attended school and worked. She then moved to Charleston where she resided for 55 years. Many of her years in Charleston were spent working as an executive legal secretary to Supreme Court Justice Frank Haymond.
Upon returning to Beckley, Ann made her home with her niece, Margaret Lonker Daniel.
Being of Croatian descent, Ann loved speaking and teaching the language to family and friends. She also loved to cook, creating a variety of ethnic and country meals and baking Croatian pastries and bread, calling herself a "Continental Chef."
She had a passion for fashion and was an avid collector of hats and shoes.
She was very proud of her active membership in the Orchard Valley Women's Club, where she was a member for 25 years, serving on the scholarship committee. Ann was also a member of the Degree of Honor Protective Association Lodge No. 56.
Ann was of the Christian faith and attended Methodist churches.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Johnnie Lonker, Mike Lonker and Joe Lonker; and three sisters, Donna Barthelomess, Mary Margaret Lonker and Francis McDonald.
Survivors include a sister, Josephine Tolos of Clearwater, Fla.; 19 nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, John McDonald.
Special thanks to Ann's caregivers, Kerri Persinger, Mary Gonzalez, Patty Evans and Regina Thompson.
The family would also like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of Southern West Virginia for their service.

Born May 15, 1942, at Packsville, she was a daughter of the late Don Edward and Lottie Pettry Holsten.
She was a homemaker and had resided at Glen Daniel for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Lucas; a son, John H. Lucas Jr.; a granddaughter, Savannah Sunshine Maynor; five sisters, Brookie Runion, Alphie May, Jiney Sue, Margaret and Ada Holsten; and four brothers, Harry, Herbie, Ted and Sammy Holsten.

Betty L. McClary
ALDERSON - Betty L. McClary, 73, passed away Friday, April 18, 2003, in Brier Nursing Home, Fairlea, after a long illness.
Born July 30, 1929, in Alderson, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth H. Raines and Nell Grimmett Raines Rookstool.
Mrs. McClary had been a resident of Alderson for several years and was formerly of Alexandria, Va. She was a member of Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, a homemaker, and was retired from the U.S. government as a secretary.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. McClary Sr., in 1995; a daughter, Nancy Canterbury; and a sister, Joan Dixon.
Survivors include a daughter, Geri Dotson and husband, Wayne, of Alderson; a sister, Joyce A. Burcher of Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, Kenneth H. Raines Jr. of Bel Air, Md., and Bobby Gene Raines, address unknown; three grandchildren, Greg Dotson, Mike Canterbury and Lori Miller; and two great-grandchildren, Madison Miller and Alli Canterbury.

Ben Morgan
MARLINTON - Ben Morgan, 90, passed away Friday, April 18, 2003, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital.
He was born near Fairmont, Marion County, and was the son of the late James Franklin and Mollie Morris Morgan. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Morgan received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fairmont State College where he was president of his senior class. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from West Virginia University in 1935 and began his career as assistant county extension agricultural agent in Greenbrier County. His career, which spanned 43 years, included 21 years in West Virginia Cooperative Extension Agricultural Service as a county agent in Greenbrier, Ritchie and Pocahontas counties, and extension livestock specialist at West Virginia University. He retired as professor of animal science extension at The Pennsylvania State University after 22 years of service to the livestock industry in Pennsylvania.
A judge at major livestock shows in the Eastern United States, and at the National Livestock Show in Chicago, Mr. Morgan played a major role in development of the Keystone International Livestock Exposition in Harrisburg, Pa. He served as exposition manager from 1958 to 1963 in addition to his work as extension animal scientist. Throughout his career he served as adviser to numerous state, regional and national livestock organizations.
As a 4-H Club member in his growing up years, Mr. Morgan was recognized as one of West Virginia's outstanding 4-H Club members by being awarded the Governor's Gold Metal. A 4-H All Star, he was invited to attend the 100-year Anniversary Celebration of 4-H Club work at WVU Jackson's Mill in June 2002.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the nation's livestock industry, Mr. Morgan was named a Honorary Fellow of the American Society of Animal Science in 1976, the highest award in the livestock industry; the Pennsylvania Livestock Man of the Year in 1975; and he received the Epsilon Sigma Delta Extension Award in 1974. While serving as an agricultural agent in West Virginia, he was president of the National Association of County Agents and also received its Distinguished Service Award.
Member and elder of Marlinton Presbyterian Church, Mr. Morgan served six years on the Committee on Ministry of the Presbytery of West Virginia. He was active in the Rotary Club for over 50 years both in State College, Pa., and Marlinton and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the latter club.
Mr. Morgan is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Ruth Carson McClintic; two daughters, Stephany Morgan of Staunton, Va., and Nancy Morgan Roche and husband, Dr. James Roche, of Charlottesville, Va.; two grandchildren, James Morgan Roche of Arlington, Va., and Caroline Carson Roche of Pittsburgh; brother-in-law, Wilbur M. Jones of Zelienople, Pa.; and sister-in-law, Lois Morgan of Fairmont.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Naomi Morgan and Neva Morgan Jones, and a brother, Morris G. Morgan, all of Fairmont.
Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. today at VanReenen Funeral Home, Marlinton. Burial will be private.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Marlinton Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Susan Sharp Campbell officiating. After the service, the family will receive friends and invite all to share in a reception in the Church Fellowship Hall.

William 'Willie' Watkins
William "Willie" Watkins, 89, of Sunbridge Pine Lodge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Beckley, died Wednesday, April, 16, 2003, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.
Born Sept. 12, 1913, at Nuttallburg, he was the son of the late William Watkins and Mattie Calloway Watkins White.
Mr. Watkins was a retired miner and retired from Beckley Hospital as an orderly. He was a member of Harvey Missionary Baptist Church and a 50-year member of UMWA Local District 17. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in World War II.
He was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters.
