Kathleen Geneva Davis Conley
Kathleen Geneva Davis Conley, 79, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at her residence at Westwood Health Care Center following a long battle with cancer.
Born Dec. 15, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Frank Davis and Roxie Stump Davis of Pineville.
Mrs. Conley was an 11-year resident of Mercer County, formerly of Wyoming County. She was retired from the Board of Education, having been a cook for all the area schools. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary where she served as chaplain. She was a lifetime member of Wyoming Methodist Church where she served as treasurer and was a member of the church board.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas Conley; a daughter, Roxanna Jane; a brother, Frank Davis; and a sister, Hilda Brooks.
Those left to mourn her loss are her sons, Eddie Conley and Ricky of Princeton and Frankie Sizemore and his wife, Gloria, of Kimball; daughters, Lea Shawn Sizemore and Megan Kathleen Sizemore; two grandsons, Levi Sizemore and Frankie Brown; a great granddaughter, Kaleigh Roxanna; a special niece, Deborah Hatfield of Simons; a special sister-in-law, Mildred Conley of Sandlick; her foster grandchildren, Daren and Missy Porter and their children, Brandon, D.J. and Brian; her loving roommate, Marjorie Bailey of Westwood; and best friend, Clara Tilley of Glover.
Service will be 7 p.m. today at George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home, Princeton, with the Revs. Erica Brooks, Carolyn Scott and Dianna Carter officiating.
Additional service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Wyoming Methodist Church, Pineville, with the Rev. Gerald Roberts officiating.
Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Stella Louise Korff, 86, of Beckley, died at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2003, at SunBridge Pine Lodge Care Center following a long illness.
Born July 25, 1916, at Sprague, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Suptic and Mary Yarac Suptic.
Mrs. Korff was a homemaker. She had attended United Methodist Temple.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman F. Korff; four brothers, Joseph, John, Mike and Steve; and a sister, Mary.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, and caregivers, Helen Greene of Beckley and Margaret Suptic of Prosperity.
Graveside rites and burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with the Rev. Gerald Kelley officiating.
There will be no visitation.

Carlene Renay Lafferty
RAVENCLIFF - Carlene Renay Lafferty, 36, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at her home following a short illness.
Born Nov. 11, 1966, in Mullens, she was the daughter of the late Jill Raye.
Mrs. Lafferty was a homemaker.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, William Neece Jr.
Survivors include her husband of 18 years, Jerry Lafferty; two sisters, Lovealea Horvath of Bud Mountain and Tildy Smailes of Rainelle; a brother, Alvis Tolliver of Orlando, Fla.; and maternal grandmother, Edna Raye of Bud Mountain.
Graveside service and burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at Belle Cemetery, Bud Mountain, with the Rev. Carl Underwood officiating.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Icy Mae Lilly
Icy Mae Lilly, 91, of McGinnis Street, Beckley, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at her home following a long illness.
Born Nov. 21, 1911, at Dunns, she was the daughter of the late Luther Hatcher and Amanda Meadows Hatcher.
Mrs. Lilly was a retired cook at Dunns Elementary and was last employed at Pearl's Diner at Princeton. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Lilly; a son, Glen Lilly; two sisters, Ada Hatcher and Cordia Lilly; and four brothers, Jeff Hatcher, William Hatcher, Freddy Hatcher and Elby Hatcher.
Survivors include two sons, Gilbert Lilly and wife, Mildred, of Beckley and Luther Lilly at home; a daughter, Beulah Moye of Beckley; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Julia Wood of Dunns; and two brothers, Jack Hatcher of Danese and Dexter Hatcher of Crow.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Greg Allday officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park, Princeton.
Friends may call one hour before service Friday at the funeral home. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Nancy 'Nana' Nelson
LAYLAND - Nancy Lee "Nana" Nelson, 76, died Monday, June 16, 2003, in Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division, following a short illness.
Born Aug. 1, 1926, at Thayer, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mable Theresa Pitsenbarger Carter.
Mrs. Nelson was a former inspector for a clothing manufacturer.
Her husband, Alden Nelson in 1996, and a sister, Frankie Spinks, as well as her parents, preceded her in death.
Survivors include three daughters, Donna Stofan and her husband, Leonard, of Layland, Dottie Boothe and her husband, Richard, of Layland and Josetta Porach and her husband, Pete, of Cleveland, Ohio; three stepdaughters, Dreama Michaels, Kathleen Kachur and Barbara Edgehouse, all of Cleveland; two sons, Raymond Jainniney Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Polk, Ohio, and Joshua Towner of Layland; a stepson, Timothy Nelson of Cleveland; a sister, Betty Adams of Corliss; a brother, Charles William Carter of Apopca, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and Brenda Fox, Becky Fogg, Kathleen Lawrence and Scott Fogg, whom she cared for.

Yvonne B. Pannell
Yvonne Brown Pannell, 80, of 100 Heartland Drive, Beckley, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.
Born Feb. 18, 1923, in Mullens, she was the daughter of the late Silas Brown and Lucy Spencer Brown.
Mrs. Pannell was a head cook. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, member of No. 2 Choir at her church and was retired from Commission on Aging and CVTC in Lynchburg, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Quinton Pannell; and a loving aunt, Mary Miller.
Survivors include two daughters, Stephanie G. West and Antionette Pate, both of Lynchburg; grandchildren, Charles W. West Jr. of Roanoke, Va., stationed in Cuba, and Moneta West of Charlotte, N.C.; and a great-grandchild, Nyemah L. West of Roanoke. Other family members include the Rev. Robert B. Morton and wife, Mary, of Beckley, Viola Martin and husband, Joseph, of Silver Spring, Md., the Rev. OAK HILL - Louise Rose Rosiek, 81, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at her home of an apparent heart attack.
Born May 8, 1922, at Lochgelly, she was the daughter of the late Walter John Kania Sr. and Valeria Pieprzyk Kania.
Mrs. Rosiek was a retired clerk for A&P Grocery Store and a homemaker. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Joseph Rosiek Sr.; and brothers, Walter J. Kania Jr., Theodore G. "Ted" Kania Sr., Bernard J. "Bernie" Kania Sr. and John Walter Kania.

WHITBY - Hallie Scruggs Jr., 80, of 116 Scruggs St., died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at SunBridge Pine Lodge in Beckley following a long illness.
Born Aug. 2, 1922, at Tralee, he was the son of the late Hallie Scruggs Sr. and Elizabeth Joplin Scruggs.
Mr. Scruggs was a retired miner, a member of American Legion Post 70 and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Lee Scruggs; and a brother, Adolphus Scruggs.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Esther Buoy Scruggs; a son, William Jos-eph Scruggs and wife, Fannie, of Augusta, Ga.; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; seven brothers and sisters, John G. Scruggs and wife, Mary, of Lynchburg, Va., William E. Don Henry Wilson, 54, of Glen View, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at his home following a short illness.
Born Sept. 7, 1948, at Crab Orchard, he was the son of Stella Perdue Wilson of Crab Orchard and the late Berman Wilson.
Mr. Wilson was a disabled coal miner. He was of the Church of God faith.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Willie Wilson; and a sister, Mary Wilson.
Survivors besides his mother include his wife of 29 years, Margaret Reed Wilson; a son, Don Edward Wilson of Glen View; three brothers, Thomas Wilson of Crab Orchard, Emory Wilson and wife, Starlene, of Mullens and Robert Wilson and wife, Karen, of Beckley; two sisters, Phyllis Moore and husband, David, of Maple Fork and Louella George and husband, Gary, of Crab Orchard; a sister-in-law, Tammy Wilson of Beckley; and many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.

LEWISBURG - Ida Geraldine Rakes Bower, 80, formerly of Daniels, went home to be with the Lord at 12:35 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003, after a long illness.
Born Dec. 29, 1922, at Dan-iels, she was the daughter of the late Dan Rakes and Ines Worley Rakes.
Mrs. Bower was a former employee of G.C. Murphy Co. in Beckley and Rakes Market in Daniels.
She had made her home at Lewisburg for the past eight years, and was a former resident of Auto and Daniels.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond C. Rakes; and two sons, Jerry W. Moo-maw and Kent Douglas Bower.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Clarence Bower; a daughter, Connie A. Mills of Beckley; two grandchildren, Douglas B. Mills and wife, Christy, of Concord, N.C., and Amanda J. Cloonan and husband, Jeremy, of Shady Spring; three great-grandchildren, J.D. Cloonan, Taylor Nicole Cloonan and Ethan Douglas Mills; and two sisters, Eileen Smith and Anna Lee Meade, both of Daniels.
Service will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley. Private burial will follow in Worley Cemetery, Daniels.

Margarette L. Wallace Edwards, 88, of Sophia, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, June 17, 2003, following a long illness.
Born July 26, 1914, at Turkey Knob, she was the daughter of the late Harry Wallace and Katherine Wallace.
Mrs. Edwards was a homemaker and a member of Sophia First Baptist Church.
She loved cooking and cleaning and taking care of her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Bernard Edwards; three sisters; and two brothers.

Steven Steward Gwinn
MOUNT HOPE - Steven Steward Gwinn, 55, formerly of Lockbridge, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2003, at home following a short illness.
Born Jan. 28, 1948, he was the son of the late Burke and Ruby Ramsey Gwinn.
Mr. Gwinn served in Vietnam with the U.S. Navy and was a contractor.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas K. Gwinn, in addition to his parents.
Survivors include his companion, Ladonia Pike of Mount Hope; a stepdaughter, Tina of Elkhart, Ind.; a son, Stevie Gwinn of Elkhart; two stepsons, Terry and Eddie, both of Elkhart; a sister, Judy of Florida; and three grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.
There will be no service. The body is to be cremated.

Joseph E. Johnson Sr.
LEWISBURG - Joseph E. Johnson Sr., 76, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, after a long illness.
Born Dec. 15, 1926, at Cunard, he was the son of the late Dodridge Sydnor and Lucy Evans Johnson.
He was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters, James W., Charles, Dodridge S. Jr., Frances Hey, Betty Craddock and Martha Ruth Martin.
Mr. Johnson retired from USDA as a federal meat inspector. He was a veteran of World War II and a former member of the Air National Guard.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Fairlea.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Violet Stover; three sons, Joseph E. Johnson Jr. and his wife, Sylvia, of Frankford, James W. Johnson and his wife, Vicky, of Cross Lanes and Jesse Stover Johnson of Charlotte, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Jolene Johnson, Ryane Johnson, Jeanene Johnson, Kristin and Ashley Johnson.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at McCraw Funeral Home, Lewisburg, with the Rev. Mark Billington officiating.

Thomas Michael 'Mike' Martin
Thomas Michael "Mike" Martin, 55, died of respiratory failure following a short and sudden illness Friday, June 6, 2003, in Lexington, Ky., where he made his home for the past two years.
Mike was born June 3, 1948 in Montgomery, the son of the late Thomas H. and Doris Custer Martin. He grew up in Montgomery and Oak Hill, graduating from Collins High School in 1966 before moving with his family to Beckley. He attended West Virginia Institute of Technology. Mike began a successful career in broadcasting while in college and worked at WWNR for his mentors, the late Nick Rahall and Anthony P. "Tony" Gonzalez in the late 1960s and 1970s as one of the "Swingin' Good Guys."
His broadcasting career took him to the Tri-State region, where he worked in announcing, sales, management and eventually as the owner of two radio stations in Ironton, Ohio, his home for nearly 20 years. He returned to Beckley in the 1990s to be closer to his family, and to again work for Mr. Gonzalez and the Rahall family, this time at WTNJ. He concluded his broadcasting career at Southern Communications Corp., where he made many lasting friendships. Mike was forced to retire in the last two years due to painful spinal problems, but did volunteer work for a homeless shelter and an animal rescue group in Lexington.
He enjoyed vintage movies and music, comedy, cars and was a great animal lover. Known for his warm heart, generosity and wonderful sense of humor, Mike also deeply loved his children and family.
His is survived and will be deeply missed by his daughter, Abby Lee Martin of Beckley; his son, Michael Andrew Martin of Columbus, Ohio; his sister, Cindy Martin Worley and her husband, Scott, of Beckley; his former wife and the mother of his children, Debra Dickens of Ironton; and a number of extended family members and friends.
At his request, Mike has been cremated. A memorial service will be held for him at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at Beckley Presbyterian Church, 203 S. Kanawha St., with the Rev. Malcolm Brownlee presiding. Immediately following the service, a reception and celebration of Mike's life will be held in the church's Friendship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations of sympathy may be made in Mike's name to the homeless shelter where he worked, The Hope Center, P.O. Box 6, Lexington, KY 40588.
