COLONEL WILLIAM PRYOR SLOAN
Colonel William Pryor Sloan, USAF, of Ojus (Miami), FL, died on Saturday, December 11, 1999 in Pensacola, FL.
Born to Bessie Pratt and Arch Sloan at Ojus (Miami), FL, November 16, 1906. Col. Sloan graduated from high school in Cave Spring, GA. He attended Georgia Tech in 1927 and 1928. He joined the Army Air Corps as a flying cadet, won his wings in 1929, and served in fighter and attack squadrons. In 1934, then lieutenant, Sloan married Eleanor Ruth Wilcox of Madison, CT at Wheeler Field, Honolulu, HI. He retired from active duty with the Air Force in June, 1958, continued defense work for several years, and settled in Mobile, AL. Col. Sloan's career spanned key years of preparation for World War II, the great conflict itself, and the height of cold war tensions.
In 1938, then captain, Sloan organized the Army Air Corps' engine maintenance instruction at Chanute Air Force Base, Rantoul, IL, running classes around the clock, seven days a week. At the time, the Air Corps (later the Army Air Force and US Air Force) had fewer than 26,000 personnel and about 400 combat aircraft. Germany's Luftwaffe had half a million personnel and over four thousand fighting planes. In 1941, then major, Sloan was given charge of the development of two new training centers, Keesler AFB, Biloxi, MS and Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, TX, both still major USAF training centers. In 1939 about 1,500 men were graduated from technical training schools. Two years later, the rate was 42,000 and rising rapidly. WWII brought commands in the Air Transport Command and other assignments.
During the Berlin Airlift Col. Sloan commanded a key stopover at Stephenville, Newfoundland. In 1951-56, commanding the Air Force depot in Memphis, TN, he organized the first computer-based aircraft parts system in the Air Force. There were no computer specialists. They were developed at the depot. Following his retirement, Col. Sloan managed support for the Air Force surveillance units in Turkey. In 1964, Col. and Mrs. Sloan moved to Mobile, AL, where he was active in civic work and military family welfare and Mrs. Sloan concluded her 75 years of service to the Girl Scouts. They moved to Pensacola in 1993, where Mrs. Sloan died that October.
