Janis M. Peterson
Janis M. Peterson, age 41, of Destin, Fla., died unexpectedly Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, after a brief illness.
Jan was born on Dec. 10, 1955, at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, and traveled extensively throughout the world with her military family. She moved to this area in 1973.
Janis worked in the food and beverage industry prior to obtaining her Real Estate and Brokerage License and Community Association Management License. She was co-founder of Dale E. Peterson Realty; and was preceded in death by her infant sister, Patricia Helen Janca.
Jan is survived by her loving husband of 19 years, Dale E. Peterson of Destin; daughters, Michelle and Lauren Peterson, both of Destin; parents, Robert D. and Virginia Janca of Destin; brother and sister-in-law, David and Edith Janca of Destin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marta and Larry Nicodemus of Tallahassee, Fla., Melissa and Jim Myers of Shalimar, Fla., Rebecca and Scott McFarland of Destin, and Sheila and Michael Gibler of Fort Polk, La.; grandmother, Helen Janca; grandmother-in-law, Mildred "Mimi" Redmond; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Ouida Cox and Phil Rojas; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Herbert and Eunice Peterson; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kent and Wanda Peterson; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marcia and Dale Hull; and nieces and nephews, Brooke and Ben Janca, Christian Myers, Caroline Gibler, Natalie and Alena Peterson.
A memorial Mass will be conducted from Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Destin on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 10 a.m. with Father Robert Morris officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Janis M. Peterson Memorial Fund in care of AmSouth Bank of Destin, P.O. Box 697, Destin, FL 32540.
Jan will be greatly missed in the Destin community by all of her loving family and friends.

Francis M. McDaniel
Francis M. McDaniel, age 66, of DeFuniak Springs, Fla., died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at Columbia Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.
He was a retied truck driver with Flavorich, Barbers and Borden dairies; a member of Westwood Baptist Church in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; a U.S. Army veteran of Korea; and had resided in this area for over 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mary E. McDaniel of DeFuniak Springs; son, Robert Francis McDaniel of Canada; daughters, Sandra Jo Whitaker of Fort Walton Beach, and Maxine Diane King of Morton, Miss.; brothers, Junior C. McDaniel of Santa Maria, Calif., and Paul J. McDaniel of Clarksburg, W.Va., and Lewis R. McDaniel of Crestview, Fla.; sisters, Margaret Smith of Canton, Ohio, Lillian Criss, Agnes McCue and Rosalee Sinsel, all of Grafton, W.Va.; and four granddaughters.
Funeral services will be conducted at McLaughlin Twin Cities Funeral Home Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, with the Rev. Jerry Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in Magnolia Cemetery in DeFuniak Springs beginning at 1 p.m. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Donald F. Maty
Donald F. Maty of Niceville, Fla., died Dec. 1, 1997, in Westfield, Pa., following a sudden illness.
Born in Cleveland on Aug. 10, 1937, he was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Ida Maty. He attended Cleveland area schools as well as Malone and Rutgers University, and served three years in the U.S. Navy. He was employed by Johnson and Johnson, Star Filter and Economic Laboratories. He was the former owner of Village Cleaners in New Fairfield, Conn., and Fox Fire Restaurant in Bethel, Conn.; co-founder of DanCell Inc., and currently its president. He had been an active barbershop quartet vocalist for many years, and was an avid outdoorsman who lived life to the fullest.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Maty of Niceville; son, Donald Maty of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; daughters, Lori Wood and husband Grant, Lisa Merritt and husband Brian, all of Pensacola, Fla., Linda Maty of Niceville; brother, Richard Maty of Melbourne, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Sandra Atwood of Pensacola; and grandchildren, Melissa Maty, Carly and Cassidy Wood, Alyssa, Ashley and AnnaLee Merritt.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at Little Flower Catholic Church with Father Viet officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.
A Mass will be recited at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at St. Edward's Roman Catholic Church in New Fairfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Little Flower Building Fund, 6495 Lillian Highway, Pensacola, FL 32506.

Kathryn Kovachik
Kathryn "Kay" Kovachik, age 81, born on April 20, 1916, passed away Dec. 2, 1997, at a nursing home in Brandon, Fla., after an extended illness of Alzheimer's disease.
Kay was born and raised in Kenosha, Wisc., and lived in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., prior to being cared for by her niece, Wendy Stebbins, and Marty Stebbins in Valrico, Fla.
She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John's Lutheran Church and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Kenosha.
Kay was employed for many years at the Kenosha Evening News in the classified department and with the Kovachik Travel Agency in Kenosha.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, John Kovachik. Survivors include her brother, Edward Kovachik of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; niece and husband, Wendy and Marty Stebbins of Valrico; nephews, Bradford J. Kovachik of Kenosha, and Garth E. Kovachik of Seffner, Fla.; sister-in-law, Barbara Kovachik of Valrico; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held in Beal Memorial Cemetery at 2 p.m. Friday with Pastor Steve Marko officiating.

Gary L. Fries
Gary L. Fries, age 46, of Augusta, Ga., died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, in an Augusta hospital.
Mr. Fries, a native of San Antonio, Texas, and a former resident of Niceville, Fla., was director of distribution with H.H. Cutler Co. in Augusta. He had been director of distribution with Salant Co. in Winnsboro, S.C., director of operation services for Marithe and Francois Girbaud in Greensboro, N.C.; and assistant distribution center manager with Levi Strauss and Co. in Henderson, Nev.
Mr. Fries was a graduate of Niceville Senior High School; and of the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Fries; sons, Garrison Fries of Las Vegas, and Tim Fries of Evans, Ga.; daughter, Amanda Fries of Evans; parents, Charles and Minerva Fries of Niceville; brother, Charles Fries of Atlanta; and sisters, Pam Paine of Montgomery, Ala., and Kay Woollen of Fairfax, Va.
Memorial services will be conducted at McLaughlin Twin Cities Funeral Home Chapel at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, with the Rev. Stan Wallace officiating.

William D. Brown
William D. Brown, age 88, of Crestview, Fla., passed away in a local hospital Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997.
He was a native of Opp, Ala., but had resided in Okaloosa County, Fla., for the past 78 years. He was retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Mr. Brown was a member of First United Methodist Church in Crestview and Concord Lodge 50 F&AM in Crestview.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mertice Hart Brown; daughter and son-in-law, Edna Belle and Autis (Monk) Atkins of Crestview; son and daughter-in-law, Morgan and Adela Brown of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Allen Atkins, Tim Atkins, Bobby Brown, David Brown and Debbie Brown Henderson; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Spann of Dorcas, Flossie Blackwell of Milligan, and Mimie Barrett of Baton Rouge, La.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Whitehurst Funeral Home with the Rev. Wesley Spivey officiating. Burial will follow in Liveoak Park Memorial Cemetery.

Tommy Wayne McDaniel
Tech. Sgt. Tommy Wayne McDaniel, U.S. Air Force retired, age 54, of Mary Esther, Fla., went to be with the Lord at his home on Dec. 3, 1997, after a courageous battle with cancer with his family at his bedside.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., in 1982 with over 20 years of active service. During this period he served in Vietnam, where he was awarded numerous medals and commendations, including the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross.
Tech. Sgt. McDaniel was preceded in death by a younger brother, David L. McDaniel; and is survived by his wife, Helen McDaniel; daughter, Donna McDaniel, both of Mary Esther; brother and sister-in-law, T.F. and Martha McDaniel of Hartselle, Ala.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
Funeral services will be conducted in the chapel of Emerald Coast Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, with the Rev. Frank Dole officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla.

Burton Alfred Davis
Retired Lt. Col. Burton A. Davis, U.S. Air Force, age 78, of Navarre, Fla., passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997.
He was born on March 12, 1919, in Joliet, Ill., and had been a resident of the local area for the past 25 years, moving here from Boston. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
He was a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force with over 30 years of distinguished service. Following his retirement from the Air Force, his life-long love of the outdoors and recreational vehicles led him to start Leisure Time R.V. in 1978.
Burton was also very active in Boy Scout leadership throughout his life. He was a past master of Alpha Lodge 172; member of York Rite Bodies of Fort Walton Beach; and a 32nd Degree KCCH of Scottish Rite Bodies of Panama City, Fla. Presently, he served as venerable master of the Lodge of Perfection, and past master of Kadosh of the Consistory.
He was preceded in death by his son, Dale Davis.
Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Helen; sons, Gregory and daughter-in-law Elaine Davis of Morehead City, N.C., and Bruce and daughter-in-law Kim Davis of Woodbury, Minn.; daughter, Gayle and son-in-law Steve Hill of Navarre; five grandchildren; and sister, Corrine King of Tampa, Fla.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at McLaughlin Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Jim Ross officiating. Pallbearers will be his two sons and brother Masons from Alpha Lodge. Interment will follow in Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla., at 2 p.m.

Marie Louise Reither
Marie Louise Reither, age 63, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away on Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, after a brief battle with cancer.
Marie was born in Pensacola, Fla., on Aug. 29, 1934, and has resided in Fort Walton Beach for the past 36 years. She was a devout member of St. Mary's Catholic Church; an active member of St. Mary's Sodality and Choir; past president of the West Central Deanery Council of Catholic Women; and an officer in the Knights of Columbus Women's Auxiliary.
Marie was a great cook and excellent seamstress. She enjoyed her bridge group and was a member and past officer of the A.H.O.Y. She was a kind and loving person who could never say no to someone in need. She will be greatly missed by the community, her family and her many friends.
Marie was preceded in death by her father, Jules E. Dubuisson; an infant daughter; and a son, Joseph E. Reither.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Stanley I. Reither Sr. of Fort Walton Beach; daughters and sons-in-law, Aggie and David Marler of Destin, Fla., Rose and David Coverston of Winter Park, Fla.; sons, Stanley I. Reither Jr. of Aberdeen, Miss., and Chris Reither of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.; mother, Agnes Dubuisson of Pensacola, Fla.; brother Fred Dubuisson of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law, Jules and Brenda Dubuisson of Fort Walton Beach; sister Dorothy Hanna of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law Annie and Gene Geri of Lillian, Ala.; grandchildren, Michelle Marler, Keone Reither, Leigh Anne and Stanley I. Reither III, Joseph and John David Coverston; and several aunts, uncles and many nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth R. Vota
Elizabeth R. Vota, age 86, of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, in a local hospital. Mrs. Vota was a retired medical secretary with the state of New Jersey and had resided in this area for the past 25 years. She was a mbmeber of St. Rita's Catholic Church in Santa Rosa Beach where she was a member of the Legion of Mary.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph L. Vota, of Santa Rosa Beach; her daughter, Ethel Vota Sproul, of Wilmington, Del.; her five sons, Joseph A. Vota, Philip D. Vota, William J. Vota, Stephen F. Vota, all of Marlboro Township, N.J., and George E. Vota, of Santa Rosa Beach; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at the St. Rita's Catholic Church in Santa Rosa Beach where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. and a rosary will be recited at 8:45 p.m.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at the St. Rita's Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, with the Rev. Dennis O'Brien officiating. Burial will follow in Gulf Cemetery, Santa Rosa Beach. The family will also have a time of visitation from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church on Tuesday.

SMSGT. Rosemarie Collins McDonald
Senior Master Sergeant Rosemarie McDonald, U.S. Air Force, of Navarre, Fla., died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, in Navarre as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born on May 22, 1954, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Robert J. "Mike" and Cecilia Gomes Collins. She has been in the U.S. Air Force for 25 years and was nearing retirement. She has lived in Navarre since 1987, coming from Assaria, Kan. She graduated from Southeast of Saline High School, rural Gypsum, Kan., in 1972. She was a member of Wright Baptist Church in Fort Walton Beach.
Survivors include her mother, Cecelia Collins, of Assaria, Kan.; three brothers, Michael A. Collins, of Assaria, Kan., Robert J. Collins Jr., of Dayton, Ohio, and Paul S. Collins, of Vallejo, Calif.; one sister, Denise M. Ronn, of Valdosta, Ga. and all the relatives in the McDonald family of Fort Walton Beach who loved her.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at the Emerald Coast Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, in the Wright Baptist Church in Fort Walton Beach.
Memorial service times will be announced at a later date for services to be conducted at the Hurlburt Field Chapel.

Mr. Alton T. Byrd, age 63, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away in a local hospital on Dec. 5, 1997.
He was born in Richton, Miss., on July 26, 1934, and moved to the area in 1969 from Pensacola, Fla. He was a member of Cinco Baptist Church in Fort Walton Beach; a retired foreman with Vitro Press; a U.S. Army veteran and a past member of the Fort Walton Beach Golf Association.
Mr. Byrd was preceeded in death by his father, Riley Byrd and a brother, Clifton Byrd. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Alton T. Jr. and Judy Byrd, of Alabaster, Ala.; two daughters and son-in-law, Pamela G. and Christopher King, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Cecelia M. Byrd, of Mary Esther, Fla.; mother, Selma Powell and her husband, Clyde Powell, of Van Cleve, Miss.; two grandchildren, J.T. Byrd and Travis Byrd.

Lillie G. Young-Mathis, age 76, of Crestview, Fla., passed away Dec. 6, 1997, in a local hospital.
She was born in Clinton, Tenn., and had been a resident of Crestview since 1974. She was a volunteer for the North Okaloosa hospital in Crestview.
Survivors include her husband, Smiley Mathis; son, Jess Thompson; stepsons, Bobby Mathis and Jimmy Mathis, all of Crestview; granddaughters, Jackie Thompson and Crystal Thompson of Colorado, and Scarlett Bland of Tallahassee, Fla.; sisters, Flora Adkings of Virginia, Pauline Goodman of Crestview, and Joyce Hatfield of West Virginia; brothers, Dave Burress, Bobby Burress and Billy Burress of West Virginia, and Kelly Burress of Crestview; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Alton T. Byrd, age 63, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away in local hospital Dec. 5, 1997.

Beatrice Haig
Beatrice Haig, age 92, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, in a local hospital.
She was a native of Findlay, Ohio, and had resided in Northwest Florida for the past seven years. Prior to moving to Northwest Florida she resided in Lakeland, Fla. She had resided most of her life in Gary, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry T. Haig; a grandson; two brothers; and a sister.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, George and Carolyn Haig of Navarre, Fla.; two grandsons; one granddaughter; five great-grandsons; and sisters, Lahoma Edie of Findlay, and Maryella Pantenburg of Custar, Ohio.

Florence Emily Morrison
Florence Emily Morrison, age 76, of Navarre, Fla., died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at her home.
She was a native of Winchendon, Mass., and had resided in Navarre for the past eight years.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Dick Morrison of Navarre; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Carol Morrison of Navarre, and Wayne and Carol Morrison of Merrimack, N.H.; daughter and son-in-law, Maureen and John Hipp of Leesburg, Va.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held. Burial will take place in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Florida, 2001 N. Palafox, Pensacola, FL 32501.

Eula Mae Stokes
Eula Mae (Stuckey) Stokes, age 83, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., died Dec. 8, 1997.
Mrs. Stokes was born on Dec. 11, 1913, in Greenville, Ala. She worked for the City of Birmingham, Ala., during the 1930s and was a member of Huffman United Methodist Church and Huffman Garden Club in Birmingham. Mrs. Stokes had lived in Birmingham before moving to Gulf Breeze.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Donna S. and Joseph A. Caine Jr., and Sharon S. and L. Frank Bailey Jr.; sisters, Eleanor S. Shackelford of Houston, Laura Dunston and Beatrice Roberts, both of Birmingham, June Sims of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Earleen Seibert of Miami; grandchildren, Lisa C. Parsons, Robert P. Caine and Spencer B. Bailey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold E. Stokes; and brothers, G.C. Stuckey Jr. and Lomax O'Neil Stuckey.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Ridout's Roebuck Chapel with Brother Bobby Britt officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
Martin Funeral Home, Gulf Breeze, is in charge of arrangements.

Elijah N. Cook
Elijah N. Cook, age 86, of Highway C 180, Escambia Farms, Fla., passed away Tuesday evening, Dec. 9, 1997, in a Pensacola, Fla., hospital.
Mr. Cook was a native and lifelong resident of Okaloosa County, Fla. He was retired from the County Road Department; a farmer; and had served with the CCCs in the early 1930s. He was a member of Union Hill Church of Christ in Escambia Farms.
Mr. Cook is survived by his wife, Agnes Cook; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Ruth Cook, all of Escambia Farms; daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Glen and J.B. Henley of Niceville, Fla., and Peggie and Tommy Martin of Crestview, Fla.; sister, I.D. Smith of Niceville; grandchildren, Ragan Cook and Scott Cook, both of Escambia Farms, Donna Schanbeck of Niceville, and Charlette Ruschmier and Angela Nicholson, both of Crestview; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Union Hill Church of Christ with Mr. Tom Dugan and Mr. Pat Brinn officiating. Burial will follow in Union Hill Cemetery. Mr. Cook's remains will be placed in the church one hour prior to services.
Whitehurst Funeral Home, Crestview, is in charge of arrangements.
