Frederick William Dammeyer Jr.
Frederick William Dammeyer Jr., age 65, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away in a local hospital Dec. 9, 1997, after an extended illness.
He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, on Oct. 29, 1932, to Frederick W. and Marion Foster Dammeyer and moved to this area in 1990 from Texas. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and retired pest control exterminator.
Mr. Dammeyer was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Almeda "Viv" Dammeyer of Fort Walton Beach; sons, Kent William Dammeyer of Parma, Ohio, Mark A. Dammeyer of Warwick, R.I., and Brian K. Dammeyer of Houston; daughter, Brenda L. Douglas of Shalimar, Fla.; brothers, Rodney Dammeyer of Chicago, and Robert Dammeyer of Dallas; sisters, Gail O'Shea of Fort Walton Beach and Loretta Coleman of Stow, Ohio; and three grandchildren, all of Rhode Island.
Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, at Emerald Coast Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Frank Dole officiating.

Willie Mae Hoskins
Willie Mae Hoskins, age 73, of Crestview, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at West Florida Regional Medical Center in Pensacola, Fla.
She was born in Milton, Fla., and had resided in Okaloosa County, Fla., most of her life. Mrs. Hoskins was a homemaker and attended New Beginnings Church in Crestview.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey D. Hoskins; and son, Dewey Lynn Hoskins.
Survivors include her daughters, Delane Meyer and Brenda Lundy, both of Crestview, and Anna Marie Lusk of Phoenix City, Ala.; brother, Leon Jacob Franklin; sisters, Cumi Sanders, Isabelle Heeb, Clyde Spicer and Sybil Zehetmeyer; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Raymond Williams and Bill Franklin officiating. Burial will follow in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Hoskins will be placed in the church one hour prior to services.

Howard C. Marler Sr.
Howard C. Marler Sr., age 86, of Destin, Fla., passed away Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, in a local hospital.
Capt. Howard was a native and lifelong resident of Destin and was the first charter boat captain, starting in 1936.
At the time of his death, Capt. Howard was the oldest fisherman in Destin and was considered the "Historian of Destin" for his wonderful story-telling ability. He had a great love of the water and enjoyed watching boats along the waterways.
Capt. Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Ruth Marler, and his son, Howard C. Marler Jr.
Survivors include his son, J. Bruce Marler of Destin; sisters, Helen Cox of Destin, Pearl Painter of Sandestin, Fla., and Willamina Matthews of Destin; grandchildren, Howard Clifton Marler III, Helen Carter and Jack Bruce Marler II; and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted from McLaughlin Mortuary today at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Lapp and Steve Davies officiating.

will follow at Marler Cemetery in Destin.

Frances "Jean" Jennings Lavoie, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997. She was born in Coffee County, Ala., but was a lifetime resident of Niceville.
Jean is survived by her very loving and devoted husband, Daniel "Curly" Lavoie of Niceville; her son James T. Griffin, of Fairfax, Va.; brother, Alcus Jennings, of Houston; sister, Lessie Hall, of Enterprise, Ala.; two granddaughters, Lauren and Jenny Griffin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cleo M. Howery, age 80, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, in a local hospital.
Mrs. Howery was born on Sept. 21, 1917, in Winfield, Kan., to Chester H. and Frances O. McConn Thornton. She moved to this area 40 years ago from Long Island, N.Y., and was a member of St. Simon's-on-the-Sound Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Howery was preceded in death by her husband, John Phillip Howery; and brother, Gerald D. Thornton. Survivors include her sisters, Catherine M. Talley and Janet Fusone of Junction City, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews.

Malena A. Castleberry, age 97, of Crestview, Fla., passed away Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997, at her home.
She was born near Laurel Hill, Fla., and had been a lifelong resident of Okaloosa County, Fla. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Leo Castleberry of Crestview; sons, Wyndon Castleberry of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Ralph Baggett and Everett Baggett, both of Crestview; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Juanita C. Brant
Juanita C. Brant, age 79, of Crestview, Fla., died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997, at Eglin Hospital.
Mrs. Brant was born in Hampton County, S.C., on July 11, 1918, to Joseph P. and Effie Bowers Cook and was a longtime resident of Crestview. Mrs. Brant was a licensed practical nurse and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Crestview.
Survivors include her husband, Hoyt M. Brant; sons and daughters-in-law, Mitchell and Loretta Brant, all of Crestview, and Lee and Tiara Brant of Legrand, Iowa; brother and sister-in-law, W.D. and Jeneva Cook of Beaufort, S.C.; sister, Ruby Alexander of Ridgeville, S.C.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

W.L. "Pat" Patterson
W.L. "Pat" Patterson passed away Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997, at home with family members at his side.
Mr. Patterson was born in Goshen, Miss., on Jan. 16, 1892. He was 105 at the time of death.
Mr. Patterson served in the U.S. Navy with civil service in Pensacola, Fla., since 1917. He retired in 1962 with 45 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilhilmina Miller Patterson on Jan. 17, 1977. He was a resident of Grayton Beach, Fla., at the time of death.
He is survived by his children, Shirley Sahlie of Wetumpka, Ala., Malcolm Patterson, Linda Eyer and Sally Patterson, all of Grayton Beach, and Susan Hood of Tallahassee, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The pallbearers will be family members -- Eric Hood, Lee Eyer, Clark Sahlie, John Virden, David Patterson, Randy Perise, James Scott and Michael Marcato.
Mr. Patterson was a master mechanic in charge of the overhaul and repair in Building 649 at the Pensacola Naval Air Station and supervised some 8,000 employees. He served in numerous positions as a civilian employee for the U.S. Navy and received several awards for money saving ideas and mechanical inventions during his tenure of service.
Following his retirement, he taught the apprentice program at Pensacola Junior College and volunteered his time at the Petree School for special children.
He was honored in September 1995 as the oldest living employee of the U.S. Navy Civil Service Program.
He was a Mason, with his membership in the Pensacola Lodge.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Point Washington United Methodist Church, and graveside at the cemetery in New Hope, Fla.
The family will receive visitors at Comander Funeral Home in DeFuniak Springs, Fla., from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Julia Holt Mitchell Brown, until recently a resident of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., died at the age of 98 on Dec. 8, 1997, in Savannah, Ga.
"Mom," as she was known to her many Emerald Coast friends, is survived by six sons: Herb, Bill, Jay, Tom, Charley (recently of Fort Walton Beach but now living in Navarre, Fla.) and Gene; six daughters-in-law, including Charley's wife Ann Marie; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

George William Klosterman, age 50, of Destin, Fla., passed away in a Fort Walton Beach, Fla., hospital on Dec. 14, 1997, after an extended illness.

He was a well-known fishing boat captain in Destin for many years. He was a member of the Emerald Coast Cathedral in Destin; American Legion; and his hobbies were hunting and fishing.
Mr. Klosterman was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Heleyne Klosterman Sr., and is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Donna Klosterman of Destin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty June Sinnott and James Brooks of Pensacola, Fla., and Alta and Allen Houston of Leesburg, Ga.; companion and close friend, Kerry Garland of Destin; nieces and nephews, Melanie Klosterman, Krystal Klosterman, Shannon Peeples, Keri Smith, Rodney Braden, Tommy Braden, Drumonna Braden, Tommy Jo Sinnott and Edith Rogers.

Curtis Cates
Curtis Cates, age 76, of Crestview, Fla., passed away at his home on Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997.
He was born in Ocean Springs, Miss., but lived most of his life in Okaloosa County, Fla. Mr. Cates was a member of First Baptist Church in Crestview. He was also an avid fox hunter.
Survivors include his two sons and daughters, John and Joyce Cates of Shalimar, Fla., and Tom and Patty Cates of Ocean City, N.J.; a loving companion, Nellie Neel of Crestview; one brother, William H. Cates; five sisters, Ethel Byrd, Edith Desporte, Lois Miller, Elsie Tisdale and Opal Smith; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted from the First Baptist Church of Crestview at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, with Rev. Francis Picker officiating. Burial will follow in the Liveoak Park Memorial Cemetery with Masonic services. Mr. Cates' remains will lie in state at the church for one hour before funeral services.

Lehmon Spillers
Lehmon "Tex" Spillers, age 83, of Pensacola, Fla., died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, in a local hospital.
Mr. Spillers was born in Musella, Ga., and had resided here for the past 55 years. He was the owner of Spillers Well and Pump Co.. He was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church and the Florida Association of Well Drillers.
He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Shanks; two brothers, Albert Spillers and Harold Spillers, both of Musella; four sisters, Emilee Rowell, Helen Thompson, Peggy Moss and Mable Perry, all of Musella; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Shanks and Melanie Shanks, both of Tallahassee, Fla.; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel with Dr. William Rice of Hillcrest Baptist Church officiating.
Pallbearers will be members of the Hillcrest Baptist Church Sunday School Class.

Robert E. Roder
Robert E. Roder, age 77, of Niceville, Fla., passed away Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, in a local health care facility.
Born Sept. 29, 1920, in Dayton, Ohio, son of the late Walter E. Roder and Virgie Stillwell Roder, he attended Dayton Belmont Elementary and Junior High School, graduating from Steel High School in June 1938.
Robert joined the U.S. Marine Corps on Nov. 1, 1941, and trained in San Diego, attaining Corporal Warrant on Aug. 1, and left on troop deployment with the 2nd Amphibian Tractor Battalion on Sept. 1, 1942. Roder attended further training in a maintenance school in New Zealand. He participated with his unit in troop landings in the Gilbert Islands from Nov. 20 to Dec. 5, 1943; landing operations at Saipan Island; Tinian Island; Okinawa Island and Siapan. Mr. Roder attained the rank of sergeant on Aug. 31, 1944. He returned to the States on Sept. 11, 1945, and received an honorable discharge on Nov. 26, 1945.
In civilian life, Mr. Roder was employed in the National Cash Register Co. in Dayton. Later, he relocated to Fort Walton Beach in 1981 and was employed at the Book Harbor until his retirement in 1985. He resided at Cove Apartments on Monahan Drive until failing health forced his entering the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center. He spent the last weeks at the Destin Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
Robert was a longtime member of the Optimist Club of Fort Walton Beach; and the DAV.
Survivors include his sister, Glenadine M. Story; husband, James B. Story of Niceville; nephews, James B. Story III of Orlando, Fla., Dr. Donald P. Story of Akron, Ohio, and Richard L. Story of London, England.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at McLaughlin Twin Cities Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Edward Chandler officiating.
