William (Bill) Henderson Jr.
William (Bill) Henderson Jr., 66, of Norman, Oklahoma, died
Thursday, April 10, 2003 in Norman, Oklahoma. Bill was born March
3, 1937 in Fort Worth, Texas, to William Henderson Sr. and Chloe
Jordan Henderson. He attended high school in the Dallas/Fort Worth
area and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He
moved to Norman from Fort Worth, Texas in the early seventies. Bill
married Linda Jo Betts on January 28, 1993 in Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma. He was a member of H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group) and
the Oklahoma #1 Hog Chapter. He also belonged to the Moose
Lodge. Bill loved riding his Harley motorcycle, watching and playing
golf.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include
his wife, Linda Jo of the home; son, Sahib Quiteman Henderson of
Duncan, OK; stepson, Lowell Bates of Liberal, MO.; two daughters,
Antoinette Marie Bell of Katy, TX and Teshi Nicole Henderson of
Washington, DC.; two stepdaughters, Sonya Bates of Oklahoma City,
OK and Marci Unruh of Guthrie, OK; brother, Bob Henderson of
Houston, TX; his stepmother, Verna Henderson of Fort Worth Texas;
two stepsisters, Robyn and Ruth-Lupe of Fort Worth, TX;
stepbrother, Noah Henderson of Fort Worth, TX; and ten
grandchildren.

Cecil Rhodes
Cecil Rhodes, 82, of Norman, Oklahoma, died Tuesday, April
29, 2003 in Norman, Oklahoma. Mr. Rhodes was born November
20, 1920 in Tuttle, Oklahoma, to Robert Ewing and Annie Jewel
McCurdy Rhodes. He grew up in Tuttle-Newcastle area and
graduated from Newcastle High School and attended the University
of Oklahoma. He married Mary Stanmire. Mr. Rhodes was a
veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Navy Air Corp. He
moved to Norman from Oklahoma City in 1948. He owned and
operated Rhodes Grain Company for over fifty-five years and was a
pioneer in the modernization of the grain business in Oklahoma. Mr.
Rhodes was a member of the First Baptist Church in Norman.
Mr. Rhodes was preceded in death by his parents and sister.
Survivors include his wife, Mary of the home; two daughters, Sherry
McDonald and husband, Richard of Norman, OK and Mary Kathleen
Rhodes and husband, Brad Quillen of Oklahoma City, OK; and three
grandchildren, David A. McDonald and wife, Julianna of Oklahoma
City, OK, John McDonald and wife, Sandra of Moore, OK and Seth
McDonald and wife, Kara of Norman, OK.
Dorothy May Abercrombie
Dorothy May Abercrombie, 86, of Norman, Oklahoma, died
Tuesday, April 15, 2003 in Norman, Oklahoma. Mrs. Abercrombie
was born July 24, 1916 in Lawton, Oklahoma, to Harrison Peter and
Beaulah May Harrel Hiester . She grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma on
her parent’s homestead. She graduated from Lawton High School in
1935 and then attended and graduated from Oklahoma State
University with a B.S. in Business Education. Mrs. Abercrombie
worked as a medical transcriptionist in Vinita, Oklahoma for nine
years. She married C.O. Abercrombie in Woodward, Oklahoma on
November 30, 1940. They moved from Oklahoma City to Norman in
1959. Mrs. Abercrombie was a charter member of the Normandy
Park Garden Club, the Norman Home Craft Sorosis Club and the First
Baptist Church of Norman. She loved playing bridge, traveling,
fishing, and the outdoors. She was very fond of all her grandchildren.
Mrs. Abercrombie was preceded in death by her parents, her
husband, who died in 2002, a brother and sister. Survivors include
three sons, David Abercrombie of Dallas, TX, Thomas Abercrombie
and wife, Ellen of Norman, OK and Ralph Abercrombie and wife,
Valorie of Edmond, OK; one daughter, Betty White and husband,
Tom of Norman; two sisters, Betty Moore of Oklahoma City and
Antonette Davis of Muskogee, OK; eleven grandchildren, Charm and
husband, Reza Fakhrshafaei, Brian Abercrombie, Nathan
Abercrombie, Roger White and wife, Daiquiri, Kenneth White,
Jennifer Abercrombie, John Abercrombie, Stephen Abercrombie,
Becky White, Paul Abercrombie, Jessie Abercrombie; and two great
grandchildren, Kamron Fakhrshafaei and Kyle Fakhrshafaei.

Rick J. Alexander, 31, of El Reno,
Oklahoma died April 4, 2003 in El Reno.

Rick was born April 8, 1971 in Oklahoma City to Richard Lee
Alexander and Jeanne Allen Alexander. He grew up in the Yukon,
Oklahoma area and graduated from Yukon High School. He was a
trim carpenter and was well respected for his woodworking abilities
and craftsmanship. Rick moved to El Reno in 1999 from Oklahoma
City. He married Clarissa Schimmel on May 14, 2000 in Denton,
Texas. Rick’s hobbies included restoring Model T cars. He was
currently restoring a 1916 Model T. He was a member of the
National Hot Rod Association and the Heartland " T " ‘s Association
of Oklahoma City.
Rick was survived by his wife Clarissa, of the home; father,
Richard Alexander, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; mother, Jeanne
Allen Gaunce and husband, Charles, of El Paso, Texas; brother,
William Hornbaker and wife, Christina, of Tucson, Arizona; sister,
Brandi Hornbaker Simpson and husband, Matt of Ft Worth, Texas;
grandparents, Bennie and Wilma Allen of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
and grandmother, Delcie Alexander, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma,
special aunt, Debbie Allen Ball and husband, Mike, of Tuttle,
Oklahoma, and niece and nephew, Star and River Simpson.
Rick’s sense of humor and ability to make anyone laugh will
be sorely missed.

Oleta Ann Batson, 62, of Norman, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003 in Norman,
Oklahoma. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, April 28, 2003 at Havenbrook

Ms. Batson was born June 25, 1940 in Proctor, Oklahoma, to Bernie and Lola Reese Kindle.
She grew up in Proctor, Oklahoma and lived in a number of Oklahoma towns, including Tulsa,
Owasso, Choctaw and Edmond. She moved to Norman from Edmond in February 2003. Ms.
Batson worked as a checker for I.G.A. stores throughout most of her life.
Ms. Batson was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister. Survivors
include her son, Mark Allen Rogers and companion, Rick Steiner of Norman, OK; daughter, Debbie
Ann Cooper and husband, Steve of Ft. Gibson, OK; brother, Lloyd Kindle of Berryhill, OK; four
grandchildren, Heather Hamilton, Amber Cooper, Ashley Cooper, Stevie Kristen Cooper; one greatgrandson,
Cole Hamilton; four nieces and six nephews.

He was born October 5, 1916, in Lincoln County, Okla., the fifth
son of Guy Franklin Chandler and Hazel Crawford Chandler.
After graduation from Wellston High School and Oklahoma A&M
University, Chandler was called to active duty in World War II,
serving with the Dixie Division. Chandler made seven beachhead
landings in the Pacific Theater.
During the Korean Conflict, Chandler served as a
psychological warfare officer. He completed his career at various
posts in the United States and Europe. In 1966, Chandler retired
after 26 years of service. After retiring, he worked for the U.S.
Postal Service until 1979. Chandler was an active member of First
Baptist Church of Norman, serving as a deacon and in other roles
for the church.
Chandler is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Joy; his
daughters and their husbands, Candace and Robert Hart of Surfside
Beach, Texas, and Sharon and John Maddox of Ponca City, Okla.;
a niece and her husband, Belinda and Arthur Mould of Wichita,
Kan.; grandchildren and their spouses, Nancy and Gregory Hoag of
Wylie, Texas, Becky and Adam Purvis of Irving, Texas, Kimber
and Stephen Morrow of New Orleans, La., Kristin and James
Cheng of Rochester, N.Y., and Kenneth Chandler Maddox of
Weatherford, Okla., and his fiancée Kinsey Bills of Willard, Mo.,
Art and Erin Mould of Missouri City, Texas, and Shannon Mould
of Norman, Okla. Chandler was preceded in death by his parents
and six brothers.

Mr. Crabtree was born December 24, 1932 in Anadarko,
Oklahoma, to John William and Della Mae Berndsen Crabtree. He
grew up in Medicine Park, Oklahoma and graduated from Elgin High
School in 1952. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953 and
served two years in England during the Korean Conflict. He was
honorably discharged from the Army in 1955 and then joined the
Oklahoma Army National Guard. Mr. Crabtree worked full time with
the National Guard from 1958 and retired after serving over thirty
years. He achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer with the
National Guard. He married Barbara H. Thomas on December 28,
1957 in Lawton, Oklahoma. He moved to Norman from Lawton,
Oklahoma in May 1963. After his retirement, he went to work for the
Cleveland County YMCA. He enjoyed spending time with his
friends and family, hunting, fishing, camping and drinking coffee at
Braums. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his three
granddaughters and taking care of his family.
Mr. Crabtree was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors
include his wife, Barbara of the home; son, Russell Glenn Crabtree
and wife, Angie of Norman, OK; daughter, Kristy Lynn Crabtree of
Norman, OK; sister Virginia Bishop of Lawton, OK; two brothers,
Charles Crabtree of Woodward, OK and Robert Crabtree and wife,
Ruth of Elgin, OK; and three granddaughters, Madison Brooke,
Kelsey Jo and Hanna Lynn.

Mr. Davenport. was born February 4, 1915 in Macomb,
Oklahoma, to Arthur and Mary Mae Upchurch Davenport. He grew
up in the Lexington and Norman area. He married Bessie Barto on
June 24, 1936 in Norman, Oklahoma. Mr. Davenport served his
country during World War II in the Pacific theater aboard the
battleship USS Maryland from January 4, 1945 through December 4,
1945. After the war, he returned to Norman to farm. He retired from
the University of Oklahoma Press in 1978 after serving 23 years in
the capacity of Mail Room Manager and Binderyman. After
retirement he lived at Bridgeview at Lake Texoma, returning to
Norman after five years. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping and
spending time with his family. He was active in church work at
Immanuel Baptist Church serving as deacon and treasurer for many
years. He was also charter member of the Alameda Baptist Church.
Mr. Davenport was preceded in death by his parents and two
brothers, Charlie Davenport and Carl Davenport. He is survived by
his wife, Bessie of the home; two sons, Darrell Davenport and wife,
Eunice of Norman and David Davenport and his wife, JoAnn of
Belle Center, OH; two grandsons, Jeff Davenport of Norman and Lee
Trammell, Jr. of Houston, TX; four granddaughters, Valarie Harshaw
of Dixon CA, Phyllis Davenport of Norman, Lara McClure of
Denham Springs, LA and Sara Seigfried of Tulsa; and eleven greatgrandchildren.
He is also survived by five sisters, Ethel Champeau
of Loveland, CO, Edna Reid of Peublo, CO, Annie Ferrell of
Norman, OK, Thelma Griffin and Loyce Laurence both of Ardmore,
OK; sisters-in-law, Opal White of Lufkin, TX and Nina Vey
Davenport of Ardmore, OK; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and
friends.
Grace Marion Haile
Grace Marion Haile, 82, of Norman, Oklahoma, died Friday,
April 11, 2003 in Norman, Oklahoma.. Arrangements are under the

Grace was born August 27, 1920 in Great Neck, New York,
to William and Catherine Ellard Roberts. She graduated from Great
Neck High School in Long Island, NY. Grace married Frank Barnes
Haile on July 25, 1942 in Great Neck, NY, Grace was preceded in
death by her husband, parents and daughter-in-law. Survivors include
her two sons, Donald Haile of Norman, OK and Kenneth Haile of
Hallpark, OK, 5 grandchildren, Sandy Esch of Bethany, OK, Michael
Haile, Carol Haile, Elizabeth Haile and Lauren Haile all of Norman,
OK and 4 great-grandchildren, Amierra Haile, Keweysha Haile,
Lindsey Haile all of Norman, OK and Branden Esch of Bethany, OK.
Stephen Bryan Hetherington
Stephen Bryan Hetherington, 54, of Norman, Oklahoma,
died Sunday, April 20, 2003 in Norman, Oklahoma. Mr.
Hetherington was born June 27, 1948 in Wichita, Kansas, to
Homer Gordon and Joyce Stacy (McCoy) Hetherington Valliere.
He graduated from Dickson High School in Ardmore,
Oklahoma in 1967 and attended Oklahoma State University and
the Moore Norman VoTech Center, receiving a degree as a
machinist. Mr. Hetherington was a veteran of the U.S. Navy
serving during the Vietnam War from 1968 until 1972. He
loved astronomy and motorcycles.
Mr. Hetherington was preceded in death by his father,
Homer in 1996 and his brother, James Hetherington in 1991.
Survivors include his mother, Joyce and stepfather, Olier D.
Valliere of Norman, OK; three sisters, Rita Gillham and
husband, Phillip of Quinton, OK, Judy Jackson and husband,
Mike of Tuttle, OK and Teresa Pastrano and husband, Ruben of
Tempe, AZ.

Ruth Powell
Ruth Powell, 89, of Norman,
Oklahoma died April 19, 2003 at the Noble
Health Care Center in Noble. A Private
Memorial Service for family will be held at
the home with Reverend David Spain of
the First Christian Church of Norman
officiating.
Mrs. Powell was born July 14,
1913, in Ladonia, Texas, the third of four
children born to C. C. (Charles Columbus) and Emma Miller Roberts.
Her early childhood was spent in Paris, Texas, and her school years
in Corsicana, Texas. She received two masters degrees, first in
English from Baylor University and later in Piano from Texas
Women’s University in Denton. She married William Lytle Powell
in Marietta, OK on April 20, 1933, and spent four years in London,
England, while her husband was obtaining his performance and
teaching degrees in Piano at the renowned Tobias Matthay Pianoforte
School. Their oldest child, Bill was born while they were in London.
Mrs. Powell moved to Norman in 1940 with her family when
Mr. Powell began teaching at the University of Oklahoma as a
Professor of Piano. Mrs. Powell taught piano in her home for over
forty years. In addition to family and music, she loved gardening in
her beautiful yard. After her husband’s death in 1998, Mrs. Powell
remained in her home with her friend and caregiver, Azalia Burrough,
moving in late 2002 to Noble Health Care Center. She was a member
of the First Christian Church in Norman for the past sixty years.
Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her husband, older
brother, Harral, and older sister, Minnie Maurice Ruble. She is
survived by one son, Bill Powell and wife, Johnny, of Harlingen,
Texas; two daughters, Jean Powell of Norman, Oklahoma and Joan
Jones and husband, Fred, of The Woodlands, Texas; younger sister,
Nell Davis of San Diego, California; seven grandchildren, Chris,
Harriet, Bill, Michael, Dave, Jennifer and Susan; eleven greatgrandchildren,
Melissa, Eric, Elizabeth, Billy, Jesse, Veronica,
Heather, Katie, Lauren, Kevin and Ryan and one great-greatgrandchild,
Logan.
Memorial Contributions can be made to the University of
Oklahoma Foundation in honor of the Ruth and Lytle Powell scholarship fund, or the First Christian Church of Norman. As a final
request by Mrs. Powell, a donation in the amount of $10,000 will be
made to each.
