Exie Mae Ball, 87, of Cedar Lawn Convalescent Home in Abingdon, formerly of Bluefield, VA, died June 21, 1997 in an Abingdon hospital.
She was born in Raven.
Local survivors include: daughter, Margaret L. Johnson of Tazewell; and grandchild, Barbara Lynn Johnson of Tazewell.
The funeral will be conducted June 24 at 1:30 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA.
Burial will follow in the Monte Vista Cemetery in Green Valley.

Lettie D. Dotson
Lettie Didama Dotson, 84, of Shreve, OH, formerly of Tazewell County, died June 21, 1997 in Wooster Community Hospital.
Born in Dickenson County, she was the daughter of the late Noah and Polly Ann Johnson Duty. She had lived in Wayne County, OH, since 1991.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; two brothers, Tilden and Paris Duty; and four sisters, Laura Bostic, Margaret Hart, Mary Duty and Rhoda Duty.
Survivors: husband, Henry Dotson; daughters, Christine Pierce of Shreve, OH, Mrs. Elbert "Betty" Pierce of Big Prairie, OH; son, Roger Dotson of West Salem, OH; brother, James Walter Duty of Cedar Bluff; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

George William Smith, 62, of Oakwood, died June 20, 1997 in a Kingsport, TN, hospital following a long illness.

Beulah W. White
Beulah W. White, 77, of Whitewood, died June 21, 1997 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Buchanan County and was a daughter of the late Arch and Rosa Clementine Woosley Ward, both Buchanan County natives.
She was a lifelong resident of the Jewell Valley and Whitewood areas, was a former employee of the Grill at Jewell Valley Company Store at Jewell Valley and was a member of the Baptist Bible Church at Pilgrim Knob.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Quinton White; one daughter, Wylodine Justus; one sister, Edna Day; and two brothers, Clyde Ward and Thurman Ward.
Survivors: daughter, Jacalyn Brewster of Pounding Mill; son, Archie Q. White of Whitewood; sisters, Thelma Wimmer of Whitewood, Orpha Dawson of Jackson, OH; brother, Hassel Ward of Collinsville; and three grandchildren, Nathaniel White, Tamara Payne and Jeremy Brewster.

Dora B. Williams, 69, of Richlands, died June 22, 1997 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Cedar Bluff, she was a daughter of the late Henry David and Nellie Faye Burnett Williams.
She had resided in the Richlands area in her early life, moving to South Carolina for several years and returning to Richlands in 1985. She attended the Swords Creek Pentecostal (Block) Church at Swords Creek and was a former employee of the Goodwin Mills in Cedar Bluff.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Everett D. Williams and James Williams.
Survivors: son, Jackie D. Williams of Richlands; sisters, Charlotte Barrett of Bristol, Lucille Hoops of Baptist Valley, Christine Jackson of Belfast, Lois Houchins of Richlands; and brothers, Harry Dale Williams of Cleveland, OH, and Henry David Williams, Jr. of Jewell Ridge.

Ellis Horne, 84, of the Baptist Valley section of North Tazewell, died Oct. 7, 1997 in a Tazewell hospital following a long illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Cam and Nancy Keen Horne.
He was a retired coal miner formerly employed by Harmon Coal Co., Red Jacket Coal Co., Sycamore Coal Co. and Crystal Block Coal Co. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Lonnie Horne; two brothers, Charlie Horne and Huffard Horne; and two sisters, Myrtle Walker and Ida Ward.

Kermit E. Justice
Kermit Eugene Justice, 65, of Centralia, died Oct. 7, 1997 at St. Maryís Hospital in Centralia.
Born in Red Ash, he was a son of Henry J. and Myrtle D. (Ball) Justice.
He was retired from the Centralia Police Department from 1957 to 1986 in which he was acting chief from 1975-76 and Chief from 1976 to 1986. He was in the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict.
He was a lifetime member of Illinois Police Assoc.; President of Southern Illinois Police Chiefs; South Eastern Illinois Police Chiefs; Illinois Chiefs of Police; Clinton County Law Enforcement; Centralia Moon Rotary; served on the executive board of Illinois Chiefs of Police; Illinois Police Assoc. - Shawnee Division; American Legion; VFW and the Wednesday Night Poker Club.

Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) Richardson, 100, of the Pine Creek section of Swords Creek, died Oct. 8, 1997 at Columbia Clinch Valley Hospital.
Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Johnny and Alice Ball Robinette.
She had resided in the Swords Creek area all of her life. She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith and a member of the Pine Creek Holiness Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Richardson in March of 1973; one daughter, Dora Webb; one infant son; six brothers, Andrew, Henry, Bill, Wesley, Mervin and Junior Robinette; and four sisters, Bertie Robinette, Ida Robinette, Liza Bostic and Rosie Davis.

Born in McDowell County, WV, he was the son of the late Napoleon and Ocie Belle Hall Justus.
He was a member of the Wolfpen Church of God. He was a retired coal miner having worked for the Panther Coal Company, a member of the United Mine Workers of America and a retired Deputy Sheriff for the Buchanan County Sheriff Dept.

Raymond Osker Pilkins, 69, of Rt. 5, Bluefield, WV, (Airport Rd.), died Dec. 1, 1998 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield.
Born in Tannersville, he was the son of the late Benjamin Pilkins and Mary Hager Pilkins.
He had been a resident of Bluefield for 57 years. He was a retired truck driver having worked for United Transit Mix of Bluefield. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during W.W.II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War belonging to the Pinnacle Post of Bluefield, WV, and was a member of the N.R.A.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Eva Williams Brown, 96, of Salem, formerly of Tazewell, died Feb. 19, 1999 at Snyder Nursing Home in Salem.
Born at Bramwell, WV, she was a daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Williams and Mary Sue Williams.
She attended Concord College and began teaching at North Tazewell Elementary School during the emergency of World War II and continued teaching until she received her 25-year pin. She was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church in Tazewell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jackson Brown Sr.; daughter, Barbara Brown Kummer; son-in-law, Karl Kummer; four brothers; and three sisters. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Russell A. Cordle, 71, of Niagara Falls, NY, died Feb. 19, 1999 in a New York hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Doran, he was the son of the late Charlie E. and Mattie Lou Puckett Cordle.
He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He was a former employee of General Motors Tonawanda Plant. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local No. 774.

Hampton B. Crawford
Hampton B. Crawford, 89, of Tazewell, died Feb. 18, 1999 at a Bluefield, WV, hospital after a long illness.
Born in Pocahontas, he was the son of the late Lacy B. Crawford and Mary Hampton Crawford.
He was educated at the University of North Carolina and the University of Virginia where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
He was employed by the Bank of Pocahontas from 1931 to 1944 and by Consolidation Coal Company (formerly Pocahontas Fuel Company) from 1944 until his retirement in 1974. He was Land Agent of the company at the time of his retirement. He was also Treasurer of the Limestone Dust Corporation for many years.
He was a member of Stras Memorial Episcopal Church in Tazewell. He was also a member of the Masonic Fraternity, Tazewell Rotary Club and several historic societies.
In 1975, the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors appointed him president of the five member Founding Board of Directors of Historic Crab Orchard Museum, charged with the responsibility of establishing the museum.

James Harvey Fannin, 54, of Honaker, died Feb. 19, 1999 in the Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon.
Born in Carter County, KY, he was a son of the late William and Audrey McGlone Fannin.

He was a graduate of Bucyrus High School in Bucyrus, OH, North Central Technical College in Mansfield, OH, and Franklin University in Columbus, OH. He was a retired truck driver, formerly employed by Martin Trucking in Honaker and was a member of the AmVets Post 1027 in Bucyrus.

He was the son of the late Garnett and Ocie Viola Blankenship Jackson, both Richlands residents.
He was a retired coal miner and a veteran of the United States Army, World War II.

Mrs. Henry (Edith) Buchanan, 83, of the Thompson Valley area in Tazewell, died Aug. 25, 1999 at a Lexington hospital.
Born at Keezletown, she was a daughter of the late Henry Lee and Willie Walton Billhimer.
She was a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and the Home Demonstration Club in Thompson Valley. For many years she worked at General Instrument Corp. in Tazewell and was a Steward of District 50 for the United Mine Workers of America.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard Cook; her second husband, Henry Buchanan; and one stepson, Richard Cook Jr.

James L. Davis Jr.
James Lionel Davis Jr., 74, of North Tazewell, died Aug. 26, 1999 in Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born in Filbert, he was a son of Lois Colley Davis of Filbert and the late James L. Davis Sr.
He had resided in North Tazewell since 1990, formerly making his home at Gary No. 10 and Filbert the greater part of his life. He was formerly employed by U.S. Steel for 34 years and affiliated with the Methodist faith.
He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post 38, Gary, for over 54 years.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia V. Davis.
Additional survivors: daughters, Mrs. Jeffery (Doris Ann) Davidson of Bristol, Mrs. Lee (Rebecca) Ashbrook of Independence; sons, Charles W. Davis and wife, Judy, of Thorpe, Thomas E. Davis Sr. and wife, Cathy, of Roanoke; sisters, Marian Shatley of Filbert, Mrs. Keil (Edith) Dickenson of Hampton, Carol Atkinson of Melbourne, FL; brothers, George C. Davis of Staunton, Walter Davis of Orlando, FL; eight grandchildren; and five great-granddaughters.
The funeral will be conducted at noon Aug. 28 at Fanning Funeral Home in Welch with Rev. Joe Rodrigues officiating.
Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

Columbus E. Houchins
Columbus Edward Houchins, 68, of Doran, died Aug. 23, 1999 in a Richlands hospital following a long illness.
Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Riley C. Houchins and Fannie Graham Houchins Fink.
He was a former employee of Pittston Coal and a member of the U.M.W.A. He was a member of the Hill Creek Holiness Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby Dickerson.
Survivors: wife of 50 years, Mary Magalene Shelton Houchins; daughters, Phyllis Byrd and Bonnie Poff, both of Roanoke, Murilean Fields of Vinton, Jeannie Houchins of Jewell Ridge; son, Ronnie Houchins of Richlands; sisters, Nettie Allen Sheets of California, Wanda Nadine Martin of Sneadsville, TN; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Aug. 27 at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Tim Lester, Rev. Wesley Shelton and Rev. Harold Street officiating.
Burial followed in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery at Richlands.
Albert C. Jewell
Albert C. Jewell, 72, of Richlands, formerly of Jewell Ridge, died Aug. 24, 1999 following a long illness.
He was the son of the late Clara Johnson Jewell Kinder and Mack Jewell, both Tazewell Co. natives.
He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the U.M.W.A. Local 7327 and a deacon of the Reynolds Ridge Community Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Harold Jewell; three bothers, Arthur, Earl and Houston Jewell; and one sister, Doris Mitchell.
Survivors: wife of 52 years, Ada Norine Nelson Jewell; son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Susan Jewell of Jewell Ridge; daughters, Norma Richardson of Cedar Bluff, Carolyn Baldwin of Claypool Hill, Hilda Griffith and husband, Glen (Peanut) Griffith, of Richlands, Clara Jewell of Jewell Ridge; grandchildren, Freda Stiltner, Allen Richardson, Renee Fields, Bryan Payne, Kathy Johnson, Rhonda Baldwin, Wesley Baldwin, Leslie Jewell and Miranda Jewell; great-grandchildren, Dillon Johnson, Destini Stiltner, Jacqueline Fields, Brittany (Sunshine) Fields, Samantha Osborne, Brandon Osborne, and Katelyn Richardson; sister, Virgie Nelson of Bandy; and brother, Alfred Jewell of Bandy.
The funeral will be conducted Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with the Rev. Paul Crawford, Rev. George Cole and Rev. Jim Richardson officiating.
Burial will follow in the Sparks Family Cemetery at Jewell Ridge.

Charlie G. King
Charlie George King, 96, of East Orange, NJ, died Aug. 24, 1999 at the St. Barnabas Medical Center in West Orange, NJ.
Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Jack and Narcissus Thompson King.
He worked as a chauffeur for several families in New York and Connecticut. He resided in East Orange most of his life.
He was preceded in death by one son, Billy Mitchell, and daughter-in-law, Lucille Mitchell; two brothers, Jack King and Jeff King; four sisters, Cora King, Ella King, Mayola King Brown and Sallie Lou King Jones; and other nieces and nephews.
Survivors: niece, Nancy King Cousins, formerly of Tazewell; grandnephew and niece, Rev. J. Stanley Cousins and Min. Norma Cousins of Danville; three great-grandnephews; two great-grand-nieces; two nieces-in-law; and a special son, Christopher Ingraham and family of East Orange.
Graveside services were conducted at 1 p.m. Aug. 27 at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell with the Rev. J. Stanley Cousins officiating.
Nora W. King
Nora Ward King, 84, of Alexandria, formerly of Canebrake, WV, died Aug. 22, 1999 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born at Marion, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Molly Lee Frazier Ward.
She was a homemaker and was a charter member of the Freewill Baptist Church at Canebrake.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. John Early King. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, being one of eleven children.
Survivors: daughters, Esther King Shelton of Falls Church, Helen King Roten of Gulfport, FL, Ruth Ann King of Alexandria, Phyllis King Joyner of Enid, OK; grandchildren, Nicole Mills, Sheri Hillman, Kimberly Gibson, Stephanie Porter; and great-grandchildren, Stephen Mills, Michael Hillman III, Collin Gibson and Jaycob Porter.
The funeral will be conducted Aug. 28 at 11 a.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with Evangelist Stephen Roten and Grover Shelton officiating.

will follow at Hartwell Cemetery in Hartwell, WV.

Naomi L. Dye
Naomi Lillian Humphrey Dye, 68, of Oakwood, died Aug. 13, 2000 in a Richlands hospital following a short illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Helbert Humphrey and Jenny Blankenship.
She retired from Buchanan County Public Schools after 29 years of service. She worked as a cook at the Derby Restaurant. She was a member of the Oakwood Lioness Club and a member of the Oakwood Presbyterian Church. She also worked with the Gift of Love for 11 years.
Survivors: husband, Robert Lee Dye; daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Rita) Bond of Pounding Mill; sons, James Michael Dye of Hurley, Robert Daniel Dye of Wareshole, SC, Craig Wayne Dye of Chesapeake; grandchildren, Jessica Lynn Mabe of Virginia Beach, Bridget Nicole Bond and Steve Allen Bond, both of Pounding Mill, Anthony Scott Adams of Chesapeake, David Keith Bond of Oakwood; great-granddaughter, Chelsea Maria Brown of Virginia Beach; sister, Mrs. Harvey (Ruth) Endicott, Jr. of North Tazewell; and six nieces.

David F. Freeman
David Frank Freeman, 73, of Richlands, died Aug. 14, 2000 at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Johnson City, TN, following an extended illness.
Born in Old Fort, NC, he was the son of the late Frank and Dulla Melton Freeman.
He was of the Baptist faith, a former coal truck driver and a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolly McCloud Freeman in 1991.
Survivors: daughter, Barbara (Edwin) Caudill of Route 5, Grundy; brothers, H.G. Freeman of Grundy, Forrest Eugene Freeman of Capron; and granddaughter, Rebecca (Tim) Fields of Grundy.

Edith Lucille Elrod Honaker, 83, of Richlands, formerly of Whitewood, died Aug. 13, 2000 in a Richlands hospital following a short illness.
Born at Whitewood, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Mae Cole Elrod.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Honaker.
Survivors: daughter, Juanita Shortt and son-in-law, Tommy, of Richlands; grandson, Martin Short and wife, Jean, of Bryan, OH; great-grandchildren, Windi Whited, Katelynn Short and Joshua Short; two step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Naomi Horn and Mildred Patrick, both of Whitewood; and special niece, Joyce (Sue) Horn of Whitewood.

Donald E. Mann, Sr.
Donald E. Mann, Sr., 66, of Fort Pierce, FL, died Aug. 13, 2000 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Palm Beach, FL.
He was born in McComas, WV, and had been a resident of Fort Pierce for one year, coming from Tazewell.
Prior to his retirement, he worked for the U.S. Government at Kelly Air Force Base and Lackland Air Force Base, both in San Antonio, TX, for 30 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Jensen Beach, FL.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Mann.
Survivors: wife, Betty Mann; son Donald Mann, Jr. of San Antonio; daughters, Barbara Shutock of Villa Park, IL, Mary Rollis of Ft. Belvoir, Donna Emory of Ashville, NC; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Aycock Funeral Home in Jensen Beach.
Inurnment will be in Florida National Cemetery in Busnell, FL.

Edna McClanahan
Edna Hagy Williams McClanahan, 86, of Abingdon for the last 12 years and formerly of Buchanan County, died Aug. 14, 2000 in an Abingdon hospital following a brief illness.
Born in McDowell County, WV, she was the daughter of the late Nathan and Cordilla Roberts Hagy.
She was a custodian for several years at Grundy Elementary School. She was of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Clarence Williams; three brothers, James, Clyde and Cledeth Hagy; three sisters, Rinda Boggs, Mary Lou Bowman and Lidia Lockard; and one grandson, Bret Williams.
Survivors: second husband, Lawrence McClanahan; sons, Jesse Ray Williams of Grundy, Richard Williams and Gene Williams, both of Abingdon; brother, Robert Hagy of Oakwood, sisters, Mailyn Cruise of Abingdon, Alice Kassem of Baton Rouge, LA; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
