Vernelle Robinette
Mrs. Vernelle Robinette, 72, of Raven, died Aug. 13, 2000 at a Richlands hospital following an illness of several months.
She was a daughter of the late Henry Melvin and Irma Whited Horton, both Russell County natives.
She was a servant of the Lord for the last 34 years and attended Claypool Hill Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry M. Horton Jr., Bobby James Horton and Peery Horton; two sisters, Doris Horton and Trudelle Shelton; grandson, Andy Lloyd Short; brother-in-law, Bascom Shelton; and sister-in-law, Polly Horton.

Icy L. Stump
Icy L. Stump, 90, of Dayton, OH, formerly of Honaker, died Aug. 13, 2000 in Dayton.
Born Aug. 12, 1910, in Honaker, she was a daughter of the late B. J. and Appy McGlothlin Fuller.
She had resided in Dayton for the past 55 years, moving there from Honaker. She was formerly employed by the United States Air Force in cafeteria service.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Stump.
Survivors: son, Jack Stump of Dayton; sister, Madie Johnson of Bristol; grandson, Jack Stump; and one great-grandson, Jack Stump, Jr.

Beulah M. Sutherland
Beulah Marie Sutherland, 63, of the Big A Mountain section of Rt. 2, Honaker, died Aug. 11, 2000 in Council.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Pierce and Cordie Breeding Rasnake.
She had resided in Buchanan County her entire life and was a member of the Free Christian Church on Big A Mountain.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Virgil Rasnake, Jerry Rasnake, Joe Rasnake and Thurman Rasnake.

Lacy W. Taylor
Lacy William Taylor, 89, of Madamain, IA, formerly of Swords Creek, died Aug. 12, 2000 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Lester and Juanita Wallace.
Born in Wise, he was a son of the late John and Ada Mickles Taylor.
He spent his early life in Swords Creek and had resided in Madamain for the past seven years. He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Miller Taylor; one daughter, Betty Taylor; and two sons, Sherman Taylor and Eugene Miller.

Novella H. Cordle, 81, of Richlands, died March 28 in a Tazewell hospital following a long illness.
Born in Tazewell Co., she was the daughter of the late Beverly and Mahalia Lawson Helbert.
She was a cook for several years at the Hill Top Restaurant at Doran and the Cameo Drive In. She attended Zion Tabernacle Church at Cedar Bluff.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Archie M. Cordle; one son, Bobby Cordle; two sisters, Arcie Joyce and Margie Davis; three brothers, Brittian Helbert, Clarence Helbert and Kelly Helbert; and one grandson, Wayne Cordle.

James B. Jackson
James Beecher Jackson, 81, formerly of Honaker and Abingdon and later residing at Outlook Pointe, Bristol, TN, died March 27 at Welmont Hospice House in Bristol, TN.
Born in Russell County, he was the son of the late George Cowan and Eliza Presley Jackson of Honaker.
He was a 1937 graduate of Honaker High School. He attended the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. He had worked at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. He served in the United States Navy during World War II assigned to the USS Krishna RL 38. After World War II, he returned to Honaker to work as an automobile mechanic. He later started a teaching career as a Vocational Welding Instructor at the Russell County Vocational School at Lebanon. He retired from the Russell County School System in 1984.
He was a member of the Pruner Masonic Lodge AF & AM of Honaker, the Royal Arch Commandary of Castlewood and the Kazim Temple of Roanoke. He was instrumental in forming and served in various offices in the Tri-City Nu-Voice Club for Laryngectomees. He was active in the American Cancer Society serving on the steering committee of the Virginia Division of Laryngectomees. He received the Laryngectomee of the Year Award in 1994. He was a member of the VFW Patton Crosswhite Post 6975 of Bristol, TN. He was an avid reader and artist.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Katherine Combs Jackson.

Mazie Katherine Keene, 80, of the Dismal section of Oakwood, died March 27 at her home.
Born in Whitewood, she was the daughter of the late George and Winona Brown Short.
She was a member of the Crystal Block Church.

Elizabeth R. (Libby) Layne, 73, of Clearwater, FL, died March 27 in a Pinellas Park, FL Hospice House.
Born in Pounding Mill, she was the daughter of the late James Logan and Gussie Christian Ringstaff.
She had made her home in the Clearwater area for the past five years having moved from Evanston IL. She was a member of the Northwood Presbyterian Church in Clearwater where she was a member of the Presbyterian Women and the Naomi Circle. She was also a staff member for the Board of Pension in Evanston. She was a graduate of Richlands High School Class of 1944.

Shelva McGlothlin Lester, 60, of the Raven Nest Branch section of Cedar Bluff, died March 28 at her home following a long illness.

She was a member of the Pisgah Holiness Church.

Clifford Osborne, Sr.
Clifford Wayne Osborne, Sr., 63, of the Hidden Valley section of Richlands, died March 28 at Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, TN.
He was born April 23, 1937 in the Lewis Creek section of Honaker. He was the son of Rhoda Crouse Osborne of Richlands and the late Greely Osborne.
He was an employee of Maymead Materials of Raven where he was a heavy equipment operator.

Jackie Lee Powers, 59, of Belfast, died March 29 in the Veteran's hospital at Mountain Home, TN.
He was a son of Mary Katherine Hall Powers and the late Ralph Powers.
He was retired from the United States Air Force with 25 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith.

Delmar I. Bowling, 51, of Cedar Bluff, died May 29 at his home following a brief illness.

Martha Sandra (Sandy) Colley, 55, of Cedar Bluff, died May 31 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Richlands, she was a daughter of Clifton H. Plaster of Cedar Bluff and the late Gladys Louellen Cordle Plaster.
She was a lifelong resident of the Cedar Bluff area and was a 1964 graduate of Honaker High School. She was also a 1991 graduate of Southwest Virginia Community College and a 1999 graduate of Radford University. She was a retired registered nurse and a retired employee of Keen Mountain Correctional Center at Keen Mountain. She was a lifetime member of the Richlands Rescue Squad and a Basic and Advanced Life Support Instructor and Paramedic.

James (Jack) Hess
James (Jack) Andrew Hess, 73, of North Tazewell, died May 30 at the home of his son, Alvie and Polly Hess.
Born in Russell County, he was a son of the late Otis W. and Ida C. Stephens Hess.
He had lived in North Tazewell for the past eight years and had spent most of his life in this area. He was of the Baptist faith and was a retired coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant sons; one sister, Rev. Jettie Dye; two brothers, Dingus Hess and Albert Hess; and one infant sister.

Ruby C. Kiser
Ruby Church Kiser, 83, of Lynchburg, died May 30 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born June 12, 1917, in Dickenson County, she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Angeline Deel Church.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Trigg Church, Phinas Church, Claude Church, and Kilby Church, and three sisters, Mary Chambers, Effie Church and Rose Melvinia Church.
She was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church in Haysi. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

James R. Rasnick
James Robert Rasnick, 40, of Cedar Bluff, died May 30 near Maxwell from injuries sustained in a vehicular accident.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of John Frances and Reba Matney Rasnick of Cedar Bluff.
He was a disabled employee with United Coal Company at Big Rock and was a member of the Little Prater Church of Christ Church. He had made his home in the Grundy area most of his life before moving to Cedar Bluff in 1981. He loved his family, fishing, flea marketing, farming and horses.
He was preceded in death by his nephew, Terry Dean Clevinger; paternal grandparents, J. Walker and Stella Rasnick; maternal grandparents, Eugene and Nora Evans; and his cousin, Bill Taylor.

Fannie Jane Ratliff, 74, of Meadowview, died May 31 at her home.

Arelia Sparks
Arelia Sparks, 91, of the Middle Creek section of Cedar Bluff, died May 30 at her home following a brief illness.
Born at Richlands, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Ellie Cleo Whited Artrip.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ramon Sparks; six sisters, Kathaleen Norman, Maudie White, Betsy Rose, Ollie Price, Florence Artrip and Roxie Lewis; and two brothers, Franklin Artrip and Roy Lee Artrip.
Survivors: several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Roxie Witt.
The funeral will be conducted June 1 at 11 a.m. at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Tony Shrader officiating.
Burial will follow in the Grandview Memory Gardens at Bluefield, VA.
Merle Dean Williams
Merle Dean Williams, 67, of Honaker, died May 30 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Benton and Fay Davis Deel.
She had resided in Honaker for the past 41 years and was a member of the Swords Creek Community Baptist Church. She was a 1953 graduate of Grundy High School and had been employed as a bookkeeper for Meadows Coal Company, Jackie Ray Coal Company and MD Trucking.
Survivors: husband of 41 years, Clayton Williams; brothers, Elbert Harold Deel of Selbyville, DE, Russell Wayne Deel of Grundy, Billy Joe Deel of Dana, KY; nieces, Freida Thomas, Regina Pressley, Lisa McKeirnan, Deena Hurley, Michelle Deel, Dana Lykins, Donna Arnold and Alicia Deel; and nephews, Elbert Harold Deel Jr., Michael Deel, Russell Wayne Deel II, Steve Williams and Scotty Williams.
The funeral will be conducted June 2 at 10 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, at Honaker, with Rev. Les Ritchie officiating.
Interment
will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.
William B. Wyatt
William B. Wyatt, 66, of Augusta, GA, originally from Swords Creek, died May 29 in Augusta.
He was a son of the late Charles and Retha Wyatt.
Survivors: wife, Pat Wyatt; daughters, Kathy of North Carolina, Beth Wyatt of Bristol; sons, David Wyatt of Richlands, Rick Wyatt of North Carolina; and sisters, Loretta Rambo of Norton, and Joan White of Lebanon.

Margie M. Cochran, 72, of Bristol, VA, formerly of Tazewell, died July 28 in Bristol, VA.
Born at Hampton Roads, WV, she was a daughter of Laura E. Smith Morgan of Pineville, WV, and the late William R. Morgan.
She was a member of Reynolds Memorial United Methodist Church in Bristol, VA.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two sons, Sgt., Gary D. Cochran and Brian K. Cochran; and one sister, Jean M. Stone.

Larry "June" Helbert
Larry "June" Helbert, 79, of the Little River section of Honaker, died July 29 in a Bristol, TN, hospital.
Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late John and Mary Carter Helbert.
He had spent most of his life in Russell County and was a farmer. He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
Survivors: wife, Margaret Helbert; daughter, Jennifer Helbert of the home; stepsons, Ricky Sargent and Donald Sargent, both of Honaker; several nieces and nephews; special nieces, Lillian Ray, Tina Dameron and Geraldine Mosley; special nephew, Bryan Johnson; special friend, Rufus Bowman; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
The funeral will be conducted Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Richard Vandyke and Rev. Clyde Rose officiating.

Paul D. Lowry
Paul David Lowry, 72, of Richlands, died July 29 in a Kingsport, TN, hospital following a short illness.
Born in Dunbar, PA, he was the only son of the late David and Pearl Savage Lowry.
He was the owner of Cedar Bluff Garage and Radiator Shop in Richlands since 1969. He was a member of the Improved Order of Red Man Oniska Tribe #61 of Virginia. He served in the Korean War as Master Sergeant from 1950-1953. He was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Brenda Lee Lowry, and five sisters, Nellie Lowry, Kate Lowry, Margaret Lowry, Mabel Lowry and Violet Lowry.
Survivors: wife, Alice June Cox Lowry; daughters, Carol Ann Gilbert and Ginger Mullins, both of Richlands; son, Doug Lowry of Richlands; special sons-in-law, Haze Gilbert Jr. and Gordon Douglas Mullins; special niece, Vickie Vernon of Richlands; sisters, Mrs. William (Shelby) Shupe of Dunbar, PA, Mrs. Jack (Sylvia) Raubaughs of Connelsville, PA, Viola Wuerth of Miami, FL; special sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Darlene and Don Case, Shirley and Gomer Pyles and Virginia Street; and many friends.

Jarrett B. Mullins
Jarrett Benjamin Mullins, 18, of Raven, died July 28 from injuries received in an automobile accident near Oakwood in Buchanan County.
Born at Grundy, he was the son of Sallie Cook Mullins Davis of Raven and the late Bobby Mullins.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Evelyn Cook; and his grandfather, Gilbert Mullins.
Additional survivors: stepfather, Mark Davis; sister, Kathy Short of Raven; brother, Mark Mullins of Raven; maternal grandfather, Ty Cook of Cedar Bluff; paternal grandmother, Della Mullins of Richlands; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Anna B. Sams
Anna Belle Sams, 78, of Emory, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died July 30 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born in St. Paul, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Lillian Hileman.
She made her home in the Tazewell and Buchanan County area most of her life and was a member of Layman's Chapel Church in Richlands.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sams; two sons, Robert Sams, Jr. and Jimmy Sams; one grandson, Carl Sams, Jr.; and one daughter-in-law, Betty Sams.
Survivors: daughters, Shirley Whited of Emory, Mrs. Narvel (Anna) Brown and Mrs. Larry (Teddie) Lester, both of Claypool Hill, Mrs. Curtis (Kay) Brown of Richlands; son, Carl Sams of Richlands; sister, Betty Roffeld of Baltimore, MD; 18 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Gary W. Whitt
Gary Wayne Whitt, 43, of Squire, WV, died July 30 at a Bluefield hospital following a brief illness.
Born at Bluefield, he was the son of Fern Brown Whitt of Squire and the late Walter Whitt.
He was a graduate of Big Creek High School, Class of 1975. He was a coal miner and had been employed with Consol at Bishop. He was a member of the UMWA Local Union 6025. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.

Howard "Mutt" Hale
Howard W. "Mutt" Hale, 86, of Honaker, died Oct. 21 at a Lebanon hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Honaker, he was a son of the late Fraizer and Minnie Hubbard Hale, both Russell County natives.
He was a lifelong resident of the Russell County area. He was a retired Maintenance of Way employee for Norfolk and Western Railroad and was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Local #0571 Pocahontas Division Bluefield, WV.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cora E. Brown Hale, seven sisters and three brothers.
Survivors: sons, John Curtis "J.C." Hale of Richmond, Jerry A. and special daughter-in-law Janie D. Hale of Honaker; sister, Blanche Louise Breeding of Lebanon; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
