Donald Adair Ray
Donald Adair Ray, 73, of Egg Farm Road, Cleveland, died Oct. 17, 2005 at his home.
Born June 11, 1932 in Russell County, he was a son of the late Carby Silas and Gussie Hess Ray.
He had lived in the Cleveland area since 1969 and was of the Baptist faith. He was a disabled and retired coal miner with Clinchfield Coal Company and was a member of the UMWA Local 1460.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Ray and Ralph Ray; one sister, Juanita Dye; one grandson, Ricky Ray, Jr.; and one granddaughter, Amy Collins.
Survivors: wife of 49 years, Dorothy Ray; daughters, Anita Ray of the home, Donna Collins of Elk Garden; son, Ricky Ray of Cleveland; sisters, Betty Rasnake and Minnie (Marvin) Taylor, both of Honaker, Ettie (Holland) Hess of Swords Creek; granddaughter, Amber Ray of Charlotte, NC; grandsons, Derek Popp of Elk Garden, Mark Collins of Roanoke; great-granddaughters, Azreal Collins and Destiny Collins, both of Cleveland, Kendeal Lynn Varney of Charlotte, NC, Celina Crabtree of Lebanon; great-grandson, James Varney of Charlotte; special great-granddaughter, Katie Ray of Cleveland; special person, Tim Bailey; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The funeral will be conducted Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Eugene Miller officiating.
Interment
will follow in the Hess Cemetery on Fletchers Ridge.
Timothy V. Shortridge
Timothy Vernal Shortridge, 23, of the Race Fork section of Hurley, died Oct. 12, 2005 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Born in Buchanan Co., he was the son of Teresa Hurley Shortridge Ramey of North Tazewell and the late Carlos Shortridge.
He was a 2001 graduate of Hurley High School and was of the Christian faith. He was a Pinner Operator for S & B Coal Corp.

The funeral was conducted Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Word Evangelistic Outreach Church near Wolford with Revs. Larry Ramey and Donnie Prater officiating.
Burial followed in the Hurley Family Cemetery on Race Fork near Hurley.
A song service was held at the church Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. and a regular service was held Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at the church.

Elvinia Adkins Vencill
Gathering flowers for the Master’s Bouquet. The Lord picked another beautiful flower for his bouquet. Elvinia Adkins Vencill, 89, of Tazewell, died Oct. 12, 2005 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.
Born July 22, 1916 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Enoch and Amanda Lambert Adkins.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was known well for the love of her Lord, her laughs, gardening, and especially for cooking for family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Robert Vencill; two sons, Joe Edd and Robert Enoch Vencill; four brothers, Walter, Jim, John, and George Adkins; three sisters, Mary Helmandollar, Euva Martin, and Elizabeth Hager; five grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Those left to cherish her memory are sister, Josephine A. Pruett of Tazewell; daughters, Eloise V. Norcia and Irene Gates, both of Maryland, Geraldine Peery and Pansy Wingo, both of Gratton, Shelby Thomas of Staunton, Nancy Eastridge of Tazewell; sons, Donnie Vencill, Steven Vencill, Timmy Vencill, Ricky Vencill, Kyle Vencill, and Kenny Vencill, all of Tazewell, Darrell Vencill of Lexington, Charlie Vencill of Roanoke; 34 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Elder Farley Beavers officiating.
Burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell.
William Samuel “Bill” Wampler
William Samuel “Bill” Wampler, 67, of Tazewell, died Oct. 11, 2005 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC.
Born Aug. 3, 1938 in Atwell, WV, he was a son of the late William C. and Martha Ann Dameron Wampler.
He was a member of the Weslyan Methodist Church at English, WV. He was the President of Clinch River Corporation in the Pisgah area of Tazewell.
Survivors: wife, Catheryn Moore Wampler; daughters, Yvette Wampler of Northern Virginia, Kecia Wampler Jones and husband, Phillip Randall Jones, of Abingdon; son, Harold Lewis Crandall and wife, Mary, of Ossian, IN; brother, James Allen Wampler of Arlington; and grandchildren, Dylan Crandall, Logan Crandall, and Nikki Davis.
The funeral was private.

Douglas MacArthur Whitt, 63, of Wytheville, formerly of Cucumber, WV, died Oct. 13, 2005 at Wythe Community Hospital.
Born Feb. 23, 1942 in Welch, WV, he was a son of the late Thomas and Hattie Boothe Whitt.
He was of the Holiness faith and attended the Stony Fork Community Church in Wytheville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Whitt.

Gertrude “Trudy” Woodrum
Gertrude A. “Trudy” Woodrum, 74, of Galion, OH, died Oct. 12, 2005 at home.
Born May 4, 1931 in Raven, she was the daughter of the late Charles Plaster and Martha (Horton) Plaster.
She was a member of CrossWay Assembly of God in Galion. She was a homemaker and also worked at Swan Rubber in Bucyrus for many years.
She was preceded in death on June 6, 2001 by her husband, Howard L. Woodrum, whom she married June 8, 1966. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Edith Virginia Whited, Ruby Clara Rasnake and Francis Carolyn Winfrey, and two brothers, Billy and Edward Plaster.

Lelia I. Armstrong
Oct. 21, 2005 Lelia I. Armstrong, beloved mother, went to be with the Lord.
Born in Elkins, WV, she was a daughter of the late Kent and Claudia Simmons.
She was a member of Cliffield Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack O. Armstrong; two sons, David K. Armstrong and Thomas O. Armstrong; and several brothers and sisters. She was the last surviving member of her family in her generation.
Survivors: daughters, Sharon G. Matney and husband, Roger, of Sterling, Delores I. Shiflett and husband, Thomas, of Cedar Bluff; sons, Ronald C. Armstrong and wife, Debra J., of Mill Creek, WV, Jeff Armstrong and wife, Cherrie, of Northport, AL. She was blessed with 14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Lloyd Bogle, 73, of the Tip Top area in North Tazewell, died Oct. 17, 2005 at his home.
Born Feb. 10, 1932 in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Okie and Vangie Mitchell Bogle.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathleen Bogle and Wanda Bogle; one brother, George Bogle; and one grandson, Gary Tyler Bogle.

Lena M. Bowles, 90, of Bluefield, VA, died Oct. 15, 2005 in Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas P. Coon and Lorena Neal Coon.
She was a member of the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church in Bluefield, VA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Bowles; two brothers, John Coon and Tom Coon; and three sisters, Flora Slade, Wanego Patton and Lorene Rangeo.

Pamela Jean Clark, 45, of Rocky Gap, died Oct. 2, 2005 at her residence after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Born Nov. 7, 1959 in Bluefield, WV, she was the daughter of Jack Lambert of Aurora, OH, and the late Verna Lambert.
She was a nurse at the Wythe County Community Hospital.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by one sister, Debbie Whittaker.

Oceana Neel Janutolo, 89, formerly from the Brushfork-Falls Mills Rd., died Oct. 16, 2005 at the Maples in Bluefield.
Born in Nemours, she was a daughter of the late David H. Neel and Martha Jane Lawson Neel.
She was a member of the Brushfork First Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Raymond Janutolo; one daughter, Barbara Jones; five brothers, Julian, Dave, Watson, Daniel and Charlie Neel; and one sister, Martha Hendrick.

Mildred Brenda Meek Lineberry, 96, of Tazewell, died Oct. 19, 2005 in Tazewell.
Born Feb. 27, 1909 in Burkes Garden, she was a daughter of the late James Robert and Josephine Brenda Groseclose Meek.
She was a life long member of the Burkes Garden United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Holland Lineberry; two sisters, Dora M. Poole and Pansy M. Fuqua; two brothers, Truby T. Meek and James Robert Meek; and one great granddaughter.
Survivors: sons, William Holland Lineberry and wife, Hope Gillespie Lineberry, of Dublin, Ben Harry Lineberry and wife, Sarah Buston Lineberry, of Tazewell; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Jimmy Dale Lowe
Mr. Jimmy ‘Jim’ Dale Lowe, age 54, of Raven, Virginia passed away October 23, 2005 at a Richlands area hospital.
He was the son of the late Ves Columbus Lowe, Jr. and Francis Katherine Beavers Lowe, both Tazewell county natives. Jim was a carpenter and carpet layer and did trade work for several companies.
In addition to his father he was preceded in death by 5 brothers and his loving grandmother Minnie Lowe.
Survivors include: mother, Francis Katherine Beavers Lowe of Squire, WV; a daughter, Sindra Lewis; a son, Jimmy Joe Lewis; three sisters, Kathy Jackson of Indiana, Connie Lowe of Charlottesville, VA, and Debbie Coyle and husband Andre of Waynesborough, PA; and a brother, Gary Lowe of Glen Mills, PA.

Nancy Elizabeth Mills, 70, of Baptist Valley, died Oct. 18, 2005 at her home following a brief illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Paris Milton and Eva Erie Tabor Waddell, both Tazewell County natives.
She was a graduate of Richlands High School class of 1953 and was a member of Dailey’s Chapel Methodist Church in Baptist Valley.
She had been a resident of Tazewell County for 30 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Mills, two sisters, Faye Dye and Phyllis Christian; and one brother, Jack Douglas Waddell.

Lula Blankenship Mullins
Lula Blankenship Mullins, 85, of Jolo, West Virginia, died October 23, 2005 at her home after an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Elder Taylor and Nancy Stacy Blankenship. She was a member of the Bee Branch Old Regular Baptist Church for the past 39 years and a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Harvey J. Mullins; sons Terry Mullins and Jerry Mullins; grandson Phillip Todd Mullins; sons-in-law Barnest Mounts, Thomas Goldsborough and James Plymal; brothers Richard Blankenship, Virgus Blankenship, Edgar Blankenship, Homer Blankenship and Hobart Blankenship.

Virginia Keene Null
Mrs. Virginia Keene Null, 77, of the Spring City section of Lebanon, Virginia passed away October 23, 2005 in a Lebanon hospital. Born July 29, 1928 in Buchanan County, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Oliver and Laura Rowe Keene. She had lived in the Spring City area for the past twenty years, moving there from Buchanan County. She was a 1945 graduate of Garden High School and a graduate of Pikeville College with a degree in education. She had retired after thirty-six years of teaching primary education at Rowe and Garden. She was a member of Faith Tabernacle at Lebanon.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Ellen Sanders and one brother, Arnold Keene.
Survivors: husband of fifty-nine years, James Null of the home; one daughter, Lynda Griffith and her husband, Jim of Roanoke; two sons, Larry Null, Sr. and his wife, Shelia of Spring City, Virginia and Ted Null and his wife, Sheli of Powhatan, Virginia; one sister, Freddie Creed of Rowe, Virginia; four brothers, Walden Keene, Bernard Keene, and Donald Keene all of Tazewell, and Willard Keene of Rowe; nine grandchildren, Larry Null, Jr., Tammy Adams, Kenneth Griffith, David Griffith, Timothy Griffith, Jonathan Griffith, Jennifer Magruder, Jessica Mattaliano, and Julianne Null; six great-grandchildren, Caleb, Joshua, Will, Una, Marcus, and Micah.

David W. Peery
David W. Peery, 48, of Tannersville, VA died Monday, October 24, 2005 at a Charlottesville, VA hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born at Tazewell County, VA and was a son of Marshall S. and Alma Edmonds Peery of North Tazewell, VA.
David had made his home in Tazewell County his entire life. He was a graduate of Tazewell High School, Class of 1975. He was disabled from Consolidated Coal Co. He was a member of Bundy’s Chapel, Witten’s Valley, VA.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Audrey Edmonds and paternal grandparents, Sam and Lurah Peery.
Survivors include: wife, Becky Peery; sisters, Darlene Marrs and husband Brad of North Tazewell, Margie Ramsey and husband Kevin of Bluefield, VA, and Cindy Spencer and husband Brad of Roanoke, VA; brother, Stephen Peery and wife Kathy of Thompson Valley, VA; mother-in-law, Sue Aldish of Lexington, NC; maternal grandmother, Gladys Edmonds of North Tazewell; and several nieces, nephews and special friends.

She was survived by six daughters; Marie Matney and husband Basil of Richlands, Phyllis Matney of Oakwood, Virginia, Martha Lambert of Cedar Bluff, Jan White and husband Jerry of Richlands, Sue Howington of Cedar Bluff, and Doris Parks and husband Rondal of Grundy, Virginia; three sons; Bueford Ratliff and wife Peggy of Cedar Bluff, Arvil Ratliff and wife Zella of Oakwood, and Arnold Ratliff and wife Gail of Patterson, Virginia; sisters; Lola Ward Williams and husband David of Richlands, and Creda Horn of Pilgrims Knob, Virginia.
Also surviving were 18 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great –grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a special sister-in-law, Pearl Caldwell of Columbus, Ohio.

Don Carlos Shinall
Don Carlos Shinall, 75, of Cedar Bluff, died Oct. 18, 2005 in a Bristol, TN, hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Thomas Edward and Cora Lamie Shinall.
He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He had 38 years of service in the mines and retired in 1986 as maintenance supervisor of the Central Shop at Jewell Ridge. He was of the Protestant faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Shinall and Jim Shinall.
Survivors: wife of 55 years, Eunice Shelton Shinall; sons, Steven Shinall and wife, Margaret, of Sumter, SC, Barry Edward Shinall and wife, Nancy Carol, of Cedar Bluff; brothers, Bobby E. Arnold Slone
Arnold Slone, 58, of Richlands, died Oct. 18, 2005 at his home following a brief illness.
Born in Feds Creek, KY, he was a son of the late Otto and Hazel Fuller Slone.
He was a United States Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Junior Slone; one sister, Jean Justus; and one grandson, Jason Conley.
Survivors: wife, Anita Slone; daughter, Jennifer Slone of Cedar Bluff; brothers, Ronnie Slone of Marion, Lester Slone of Princeton, WV; and sister, Yvonne Howell of Elkins, WV.

William Earl Stinson, 87, of Valrica, FL, formerly of Richlands, died Sept. 18, 2005 at his home following a brief illness.
He was born in Richlands July 6, 1918.
He was the son of the late George Beverly and Dora Alice Blankenship Stinson, both Russell County natives.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Pansy Marie Burnette Stinson; one infant daughter, Alice Faye Stinson; three sisters, Blanche Mills, Mae Parks, and Ruth Helbert; and one brother, James Stinson.

Dallas C. Sykes
Dallas Clayton Sykes, 77, of Bristol, VA, formerly of the Honaker area, died Oct. 19, 2005 in a Kingsport, TN, hospital.
Born May 10, 1928 in Honaker, he was a son of the late Grover and Lily Honaker Sykes.
He had lived in the Bristol area for the past six years, moving there from Rosedale.
He was a former member of the Tunnel Hill Free Will Baptist Church, had currently attended Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church, and had sang in gospel quartets for more than 40 years. He was retired from Norfolk and Western Railroad with 43 years of service and was a member of the United Trainmen’s Union.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Peggy Louise Sykes and Brenda Kay Sykes; two brothers, Stanley Sykes and Russell Sykes; and two sisters, Daisy McGlothlin and Hazel Thomas. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors: wife of 58 years, Hazel Sykes; daughter, Shirley Sykes of Abingdon; son, Ronald Sykes of Bristol, VA; grandchildren, Michelle Brown of Abingdon, Matthew Clayton Sykes of Bristol, VA; great-grandchildren, Chase Brown and Grace Brown; and several nieces and nephews.

William R. (Jack) Barrett, 75, of North Tazewell, died Oct. 28, 2005 at his home.
Born July 26, 1930 in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late William R. (Jack) Barrett and Rose Stevenson Barrett Graham.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, 25th Army Division, and a member of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell. He was a member of the Tazewell Family Worship Center.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Gail Barrett; stepfather, William G. (Bill) Graham; and one half sister, Shirley Graham Hart.

Walter “Cleve” Brown, Sr., 69, of the Tip Top community of North Tazewell, died Oct. 28, 2005 at his home following a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Born Jan. 1, 1936 in Thompson Valley, he was a son of the late Jim and Bessie (Vestal) Brown.
He attended the Tip Top Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, James Brown, Joe Brown, and Johnny Brown; and several half brothers and sisters.

Genoa Jackson Compton, 87, of Davenport, died Oct. 30, 2005 at the home of her daughter.

She was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of Tiller Town Freewill Baptist Church.

Eddie Darrell Hess, 49, of Honaker, died Oct. 25, 2005 at the home of his mother.
Born Dec. 4, 1955 in Richlands, he was a son of Thelma Hess Sanders of Rowe and the late Graham Sanders.
A lifelong resident of the Buchanan and Russell County areas, he was a disabled coal miner.

Charlie Walter Johnson, 60, of Gaithersburg, MD, died Oct. 17, 2005 in a Gaithersburg hospital.
Born April 25, 1945 in Council, he was a son of the late Paris and Martha Ball Johnson.
He was employed by Orndonoff and Spaid, for 36 years, until his death.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Ebb Johnson, Columbus Johnson, Paul Johnson, Stuart Johnson, Allen Johnson, and Fred Johnson.

Lora Mae Jones, 89, of Richlands, died Oct. 24, 2005 in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Wise County, she was a daughter of the late David Mosco and Margaret Ellen Ringley Ritchie, both Wise County natives.
She had made her home in Richlands for 69 years and attended the First United Methodist Church in Richlands.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ewing B. Jones; one daughter, Cathie Jones Griffith; four sons, Ronald E., Benny H., Dennis A. and Larry Jones; three brothers; and four sisters.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: daughter, Susan Jones of Gainesville, FL; son, K.C. Jones and wife, Eileen, of Richlands; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
