Emogene R. Anderson
Emogene Rowe Anderson, 69, of Vansant, died Nov. 11, 2005 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Artia Owens Rowe.
She was a member of the Vansant Baptist Church for the past 44 years and one of her great passions was singing in the choir. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John F. Rowe and Harold Rowe.

June F. Asbury
June F. Asbury, 80, of Boissevain, died Nov. 5, 2005 in a Princeton Nursing Facility.
Born in Maybeury, she was a daughter of the late Dewey Farrington and Virginia Stuart Farrington.
She was a member of the Boissevain Baptist Church and was retired from J C Penny Co.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Lee Asbury.
Survivors: son, Dan Asbury and wife, Jane, of Christiansburg; grandson, Keith Asbury of Bowie, MD; sister, Ruby Collins of Boissevain; niece, Debbie Williams and husband, Butch, of Pocahontas; and nephew, Russell Collins of Alaska.

Draxie R. Blankenship
Draxie R. Blankenship, 81, of Cedar Bluff, died Nov. 11, 2005 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Pike County, KY, she was the daughter of the late Ross and Emily Smith Justus, both Kentucky natives.
She had made her home in Buchanan County most of her life prior to moving to Tazewell County 14 years ago. She was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Burton Smith; her second husband, Harrison Blankenship; one daughter, Dorothy Childress; two sons, James and Bob Smith; five sisters; and four brothers.

June (Libby) Buchanan
June Elizabeth (Libby) Tolliver Buchanan, 56, of Cedar Bluff, died Nov. 10, 2005 at her home following a brief illness.
Born June 9, 1949 in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Lena Elizabeth Johnson Tolliver.
She was a school teacher and taught 31 years at Raven Elementary School.

Regina Lee Burkett
Regina Lee Burkett, 61, of Bluefield, VA, died Nov. 5, 2005 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Born in Bluefield, VA, she was a daughter of the late Lester S. Burkett and Edith Neal Burkett.
She had worked for many years at the Western Sizzlin Steak House in Bluefield, VA and prior to that had worked many years at Fisher-Trenton Pharmacy. She had been a hard worker all her life, was very thoughtful of others and was willing to help as she was needed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Burkett.
Survivors: daughter, Julia Green of Bluefield, VA; grandchildren, Devin Lee Green and Kristin Rhea Green; brother, Steven Burkett of Charleston, WV; sister-in-law, Reba Burkett of Bluefield, VA; and nephew Timothy Allen Burkett of Richmond.

Jerry Wayne Elswick
Jerry Wayne Elswick, 47, of Pounding Mill, died Nov. 9, 2005, at his home following injuries sustained in an accident.
Born Nov. 16, 1957 in Buchanan County, he was the son of Frank and Estelle Clevinger Elswick of Abingdon.
He was owner of JIT Repair Service. He was a member of Freedom Ministries in Richlands and had traveled to several foreign countries on mission work. He was active in church youth programs for several years. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Additional survivors: wife, Rebecca Davis Elswick; stepdaughter, Bethannah Grace Stiltner of the home; sister, Rebecca Jane Keen of Chilhowie; nieces, Sarah Davis of Grundy, Miranda Hutton of Burlington, NC; nephew, Matthew Keen of Chilhowie; and several aunts and uncles.

Roy Lee Goss
Roy Lee Goss, 75, of Raven, died Nov. 11, 2005 at his home following a sudden illness.
Born in Jewell Ridge, he was the son of the late Lee Ira and Sally Mitchell Goss, both Buchanan County natives. He was a retired coal miner and was of the holiness faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Lawrence; three brothers, Steve, Ted and James Harvey Goss; two grandchildren, Sydney and Benjamin Plaster.

James W. Guinn
James William Guinn, 77, of Swords Creek, formerly of Doran, died Nov. 13, 2005 in a Richlands hospital.
Born May 22, 1928 in Russell County, he was a son of the late William and Dora Price Guinn.
A lifelong resident of the Russell and Tazewell county areas, he was a retired coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Guinn; one son-in-law, Albert Jones; one step-grandson, Jamie Jones; five sisters; and one brother.
Survivors: daughter, Judy Jones of Swords Creek; grandson, Jonathan Jones of Swords Creek; granddaughter, Taffy Burks and husband, Christopher, of Damascus; sister, Millie Guinn of Roanoke; and one brother, Harold Guinn of Roanoke.

Colton M. Matney
Colton Michael Matney, one-day-old infant son of Michael and Sharon Osborne Matney, of Oakwood, died Nov. 11, 2005 at Johnson City, TN.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Jimmy Edward Matney.

Johnny E. Mitchem
Johnny E. Mitchem, 55, of Bluefield, VA, died Nov. 3, 2005 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Bluefield, he was the son of the late Bill Mitchem and Flossie Miller Mitchem.
He graduated from Montcalm High School and National Business College. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Church of Christ at Maple View and was a member of the New River Referee Association, Mountain Umpire District. He was involved with youth sports including Little League Baseball, City League Basketball and Girls AAU Basketball teams.
He had a long career in the automobile service industry. After serving in the military, he worked at Action Auto Parts in Bluewell in 1971 and then worked many years at Gibbs Motor Co. as well as other local dealerships. He then worked at A&T Pontiac-Buick in Bluefield, (now T&T) until his career ended.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Survivors: wife, Jacqueline Scott Mitchem; son, Eric Mitchem of College Station, TX; daughter, Kelli Mitchem of Bluefield, VA; sisters, Jean Gaither and Barbara Francis, both of Bluefield, WV, Betty Russell of Richmond, Jacqueline Williamson-Englewood of Port Charlotte, FL; brothers, Clinton Mitchem of Princeton, Milton (Buddy) Mitchem of Owosso, MI, Robert Mitchem and James Mitchem, both of Delaware; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary O’Dell Baugh Olewiler
Mrs. William E. Olewiler (Mary), 67, formerly of Tazewell, died Nov. 7, 2005 at Gloucester Courthouse.
She was born at St. Luke’s Hospital in downtown Bluefield, WV March 11, 1938, and was the daughter of the late Walter C. Baugh, Sr. and of the late Mary O’Dell Baugh of Tazewell.
She attended Tazewell Co. Elem. and High Schools, and was a graduate of the Class of 1956. She attended Tenn. Wesleyan College in Athens, TN and went on to do graduate studies at Presbyterian School of Christian Education. She served the United Methodist Church for 20 years as a Director of Christian Education, working in six different churches, covering three conferences. She was a former active member of Main St. United Methodist Church, Tazewell.
She married Rev. William E. Olewiler, a United Methodist pastor in the VA Conference.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Walter C. Baugh, Jr.
Survivors: husband, Rev. William Olewiler, and her brother’s three grown children, Philip A. Baugh, Michael R. Baugh and Sharon O’Dell Baugh.
The funeral was held Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at Main St. United Methodist Church, Tazewell, with the pastor, Rev. Larry Ramey officiating.
Interment
followed at Maplewood Cemetery.

Fannie Lee Quinley
Fannie Lee Nickels Quinley, 63, of the Clifton Fork area of Oakwood, died Nov. 11, 2005 at the home of her daughter, Margie Davis, in Oakwood.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late William (Bill) and Margie Ratliff Nickels.
She had been a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Deliverance Tabernacle Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Paris Quinley, Oct. 17, 1979; two daughters, Darlene and Patricia Quinley; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, Elmer and Carl Nickels.

Gary Lee Rasnake
Gary Lee Rasnake, 55, of Honaker, died Nov. 14, 2005 at his home. Jesus has taken him out of this awful world and out of the long suffering of five years. He is at peace, no more pain, no more sorrow. He now can see the beautiful place he has talked about so long.
Born Dec. 20, 1949 in Russell County, he was a son of Ella Perkins Rasnake of Tazewell and the late Earl Rasnake.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was a disabled coal miner, having been employed by Island Creek Coal Company for 28 years. He was a member of the UMWA and attended Outreach Temple in Wysor Valley.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one sister, Laura Gay Rasnake; his godson, Harvey Randall "Ran" Hess; and his father-in-law, Lee Osborne.

Vicey E. Smith
Vicey Elswick Smith, 81, of Gainesville, formerly of Harman, died Nov. 6, 2005 in the Fauquier County Hospital, Warrenton, following a short illness.
Born at Mouth Card, KY, she was a daughter of the late Oliver and Lelage Williams Elswick.
She was a lifelong resident of the Harman area and a member of the Grundy Church of Christ, a member of the adult choir and a member of the Ladies Butterfly Benevolent Group. She was a graduate of Grundy High School and was a former president of Harman Elementary P.T.A. and was a former member of the Homemakers Club. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Deaton Smith, April 20, 1983; one daughter, Vivian Hunt, Nov. 25, 1995; and one brother, Ernest Elswick.
Survivors: granddaughter, Laura Lee and husband, Jerry Landrum, of Gainesville; grandson, Lynton Hunt III of Raven; great grandsons, Austin Landrum and Jett Landrum, both of Gainesville; and sister, Nell Shortridge of Gainesville.

Virgil B. Street
Virgil B. Street, 86, of Honaker, died Nov. 12, 2005 at his home.
Born Mar. 1, 1919 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late James Glen and Florence Blankenship Street.
He had lived in this area for the past 29 years and was a United States Navy veteran, having served in World War II. He was a retired welder with Jewell Coal and Coke in Vansant. He was a Master Mason in good standing of Thrall Fredericktown, Ohio, a member of VFW Post 6975 of Bristol, VA, and a member of the Sons of the Confederacy in Grundy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Brown Street; one son, Milliard Wayne Street; one grandson, Eric Miller; five brothers, Paul Street, James Street, Jr., Fred Street, Raymond Street, and Halsey (Doc) Street; and one infant sister, Oakley Street.

Harold S. Tatum
Harold S. Tatum, 83, of Claypool Hill, died Nov. 12, 2005 at his home following a brief illness.
Born at Wardell, he was the son of the late Lace and Minnie Johnson Tatum.
He was retired from U.S. Steel Gary #14 mine and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War Two and a member of the Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge #260.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Michael Wayne Tatum; two brothers, Kyle G. Tatum and James R. Tatum; and three sisters, Margaret Tatum, Gladys Lester and Mozelle Baker.

Anne G. West
Anne G. West, 65, of Morristown, TN, died Nov. 11, 2005 at Lakeway Regional Hospital.
She attended the First Baptist Church of Morristown.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Denver and Nadine Lewis, and one sister, Carol Green.
Survivors: daughter, Cynthia Lish and husband, Kelly; sons, Gregory West and wife, Carmen, Donald West and wife, Chris, Roger West and Valorie; brother, Ricky Lewis and wife, Diane; sister, Judy Asher; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Max Willard
Max Willard, 69, of Oakwood, died Nov. 13, 2005.

William Baylor Adams
William Baylor Adams, 76, of Wardell, died Nov. 16, 2005 in a Kingsport, TN hospital.
He was born May 3, 1929 at "Whitehall," The Plains, and was the son of the late Nicholas Floyd Adams and Flora Baylor Adams.
After graduating from the first grade at The Plains Elementary School with much pomp and circumstance, he continued his education at Tazewell High School where he was a multi-sport letterman as well as a founding member of the Woman Haters Club. He attended the University of the South and was treasurer of the ATO Fraternity. He answered a call from the United States Marine Corps with which he served with distinction during the Korean War.
Returning home he owned and operated Barberry Farm in Broad Run, Wardell Farm in Wardell, Wardell Ham House in Bluefield, VA, the Wardell Store, and he opened the Highland Bull Pub in Wardell. He was an Agency Manager for Virginia Farm Bureau Federation Insurance Agency and was engaged in the golf course construction business, building courses in several states, including the Hermitage Golf Course in Richmond.
He was a member of the Richlands Lions Club and past president of the Richlands Rotary Club, the Tazewell County Farm Bureau Federation, and the Southern States Corporation of Tazewell. He was a proud member of the Marine Corps League Detachment 980 of Richlands, and a Deacon of the Richlands Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Dr. N. Floyd Adams, James T. Adams, Thomas T. Adams, John B. Adams, Dr. Samuel T. Adams; two sisters, Pauline Cummings and Mame Woodward; and beloved uncle, Sam E. Baylor.
Survivors: wife, Mary Gillespie Adams; daughters, Molly Hemsworth and husband, George, of Winston Salem, NC, Flora Sherrod and husband, Bruce, of Shelbyville, KY; sons, Nick Adams of Wardell, Will Adams of Tazewell; and grandchildren, Dee, Elisabeth, Matthew, and Will Hemsworth and Mary Hamlin, Olivia, Robert, and Flora Sherrod.

Barbara Anne Allen
Barbara Anne Allen, 62, of North Tazewell, died Nov. 19, 2005 at a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born at McDowell County, WV and was the daughter of the late Sam and Dolly Osborne Beavers.
She had made her home in North Tazewell most of her life. She was a graduate of Tazewell High School, Class of 1960. She was a loving mother, and grandmother. She had been a traveling supervisor for Shoney’s and a floral designer in Tazewell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James B. Walker.
Survivors: daughter, Tammy Sue Allen Carderelli of North Tazewell; sisters, Cassie Fields of South Rockwood, MI, Bonnie Athan of Calabash, NC; grandchildren, Samantha Brooks of Lynchburg, Amber Brooks of Ameila, Chrissy Jaynes, Bobby Lee Vandyke, and Hannah Carderelli, of the home.
A memorial service was conducted Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel of Tazewell with Rev. Kevin Seabolt and Sister Liz Fox officiating.
George Haven Banner
George Haven Banner, 83, of Falls Mills, died Nov. 13, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born Feb. 9, 1922 in West Virginia, he was a son of the late George Thomas Banner and Maude Lafon Banner.
He was of the Methodist faith and served in WWII in the Navy (Seabees) and was a self-employed business operator.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Wayne Banner, and one sister, Ruth Banner.
Survivors: wife, Dolores A. Tabor Banner; sons, Michael Banner and wife, Deborah, of Elizabethton, TN, Thomas H. Banner of Falls Mills; daughter-in-law, Christine Banner of Wilmington, DE; brothers, Frank L. Banner and wife, Feria of Bluefield, VA, William Banner of Asheville, NC; grandchildren, Mark Banner, Melissa Drewding, Bandy Ann Banner, George Haven Banner II, Michael Marie Banner and Jamie Lee Banner; and seven great grandchildren.
Services were conducted Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with Rev. Raymond Klaiber officiating.
In honoring his wishes, he will be cremated.
Vinia Elizabeth Boyd
Vinia Elizabeth Keen Boyd, 83, of Keen Mountain, went to be with the Lord Nov. 14, 2005 in Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan Co., she was a daughter of the late Grover C. and Hannah Honaker Keen.
She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Keen Mountain Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and a friend. She loved being surrounded by people and her passion in life was her family and being a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Burton Boyd, June 3, 1980; three sisters, Virgie Keen, Tinia Matney and Mona Buttermore; one brother, Hufford M. Keen; and one son-in-law, Jerry Hager.
Survivors: daughter, Deborah Boyd Hager of Keen Mountain; son, James Gregory and wife, Brenda Boyd, of Keen Mountain; sisters, Reba Mae Vandyke of Marvin, Virginia Rife of Claypool Hill; grandsons, Jerry Wayne Hager and James Allen Boyd; sisters-in-law, Ruby McAllister and Rachel Sweeton; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. at the Keen Mountain Pentecostal Holiness Church in Keen Mountain with Rev. Randy Webb, Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Jack Keen officiating.
Burial followed in the Esau Rife Cemetery at Keen Mountain.
A song service was held at the church Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.

Leah Bartley Cantrell
Leah Bartley Cantrell, 74, of the Poplar Creek section of Rt. 2, Grundy, died Nov. 21, 2005 at her home following a short illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Elmer and Lucy Clevinger Bartley.
She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church for 27 years. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac E. Cantrell, Sept. 5, 2001, and one brother, Tommy Bartley.
Survivors: daughters, Betty and husband, Teddy Ward, of Grundy, Linda and husband, Alan Meadows, of Pounding Mill; sons, Clarence and wife, Reba Cantrell, and Michael J. and wife, Angie Cantrell, all of Grundy; sisters, Lois Dawson of Grundy, Ival Elswick of Big Rock; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Nov. 23 at 1 p.m. at the Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church No. 2 on Poplar Creek with Elders Howard Daniels, Phillip Estep, Toy Looney and Mark Justice officiating.
Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock.
The body was moved to the church Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. where services were held at 7 p.m.

Virginia Mae Etter
Virginia Mae Etter, 80, of Bluefield, VA, died Nov. 18, 2005 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Born in Fairdale, she was a daughter of the late Sherman Goins and Lula Haynes Goins.
She was a beautician and had formerly owned and operated the Glamour Beauty Shop. She was a member of the Wrights Valley United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Sam Etter; two daughters, Mary Jane Mulkey and Nancy Harrell; one brother, Freddie Goins; and one sister, Virgie Sarver.
Survivors: husband, Randolph Howard Etter; daughters, Peggy Jean Osborne and husband, Richard, of Bluefield, WV, Georgia White of Bluefield, VA; sisters, Irene McBride of Danville; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with Pastor Henry Johnson officiating.
Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens.

Marissa Rayanne Hill
Marissa Rayanne Hill, infant daughter of Randall (Dick) Hill and Beth Hill of Cedar Bluff, joined the angels Nov. 16, 2005 at Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, TN.
She was preceded in death by two siblings, Cybil Elise and R.J. and by her paternal grandfather, Wintfred Hill.
Additional survivors: maternal grandparents, Clyde and Nannie Lou Elkins of Cedar Bluff; paternal grandmother, Hazel Hill of Cedar Bluff; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A private memorial was held with burial at Greenhills Memory Gardens.
She gave so much to be so little, but angels always do.

Doris Ann McGhee
Doris Ann McGhee, 67, of Raven, died Nov. 17, 2005 in a Richlands hospital.
Born July 28, 1938 in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late Felix Jerome and Maggie Sparks Whited.
She was a member of Pine Creek Holiness Pentecostal Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis McGhee; six brothers, Berkley, Leo, Andy, Glen, Charles and Tommy Whited; and four sisters, Polly Whited, Sara Gratin, Lucy Boyd and Linda (Sally) Gibson.

Gladys Meadows
Gladys Meadows, 90, died Nov. 13, 2005 at her home in Newark, OH, where she had lived for the past 11 years.
Prior to moving to Ohio, she was a life-long resident of the Tazewell area. She was born in Swords Creek Jan. 23, 1915 to the late Charles Mays and Mary Blanche (Coe) Mays.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Paul Meadows; three sisters, Mazey Mays, Ella Hale and Edna Whited; and five brothers, Carlos, Delmer, Oakley, Roland, and Russell Mays.

Vertrue Meadows
Vertrue Meadows, 59, of Maryville, TN, formerly of Rosedale, died Nov. 14, 2005.
Born Aug. 23, 1946 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Albert and Annie Lee Ruyons Meadows. He moved to Tennessee ten years ago.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Steven Meadows.
Survivors: wife of 37 years, Gertie White Meadows; daughters, Rebecca Compton and Mary Flannery, both of Maryville, Samantha Spreng and husband, Chris, of Knoxville, TN, Lola Meadows of South Carolina; grandsons, Andrew and John Compton; brothers, Gene A. Meadows of Richmond, Jessie Meadows and Paris Meadows, both of Cedar Bluff, Eddie Meadows of Knoxville; sisters, Margarett Hill and Irene Worley, both of Knoxville, Daisy Street of Rowe; and several beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Annie L. Mitchem
Annie L. Mitchem, 71, of Bluefield, VA, (Yards), died Nov. 9, 2005 in a Bluefield hospital after a long battle with lung cancer.
She was born Feb. 18, 1934 in Bishop and was the daughter of the late James Arthur Riley and Mary Ellen Green Riley.
She was a former employee of Aramark Services in Bluefield, VA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Cora Quesenberry, Lena Fox and Grace Hall; and two brothers, Bill Riley and Ed Riley.
Left to cherish her memories: husband of 50 years, Tunis M. Mitchem; daughters, Phyllis Minton and husband, Terry, of Falls Mills, Kathleen Farmer and husband, Billy, of Yards; three grandchildren and granddaughter-in-law, whom she loved and cherished so much and referred to them as her doll babies, Eric Minton and Chelsy Minton of Falls Mills, Ryan Farmer and wife, Amy, of Washington, PA; brother, Carl Riley and wife, Virginia, of Richlands; and a host of nieces, nephews and brother and sisters-in-law.
