Phyllis Nadine Lawson Burkett, 76, of Cucumber, WV, went to be with the Lord Nov. 26 in Kinston, NC, at the home of her daughter.
Born Mar. 26, 1929 in Richlands, she was a daughter of the late Andy and Virgie Lawson.
She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of War, WV, and the Ellison Rebekah Lodge #90 of Squire, WV. She was retired from Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Tazewell, as a certified nursing assistant.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Burkett, and one sister, Juanita Pennington.
Survivors left to cherish her memory: daughter, Debbie Johnson and husband, Stuart, of Kinston; sons, Don Burkett and wife, Anamika, of Atlanta, GA, Dan Burkett and wife, Cassoundra of Easley, SC; sisters, Frances Shelton of Cucumber, with whom she had made her home for the past 20 years, Winefred Tiller of Columbus, OH; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many loving friends.
The funeral was held Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Tanglewood Church of God in Kinston.
The burial was held Nov. 29 at 10 a.m. at Westview Cemetery of Kinston.

Bessie Gay Cox, 88, of Belfast, died Dec. 2 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.
Born Oct. 7, 1917 in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Rosa Mutter Cox.
She was a member of the Dennison United Methodist Church in Belfast.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Garnett Smith Cox; sons, Buford Elliot Cox and Jerry Dale Cox; infant children, Perry Dean Cox, Carl Smith Cox, Garland Finney Cox and Shelby Keith Cox; son-in-law, Roy Earls; sisters, Ruby White and Madge Mutter; and brother, George Burlen Cox.
Survivors: sons, Marvin Ellis Cox, Gailen Henry Cox and wife, Ethel, and David Graham Cox, all of Belfast; daughters, Bonnie Lee Carpenter and husband, Bob, of Corn Valley, Joan Cox Dickenson and husband, Mark O., of Castlewood, Tena Gay Earls of Belfast; sister, Pauline Langford of Lafayette, IN; brother, James Garmen Cox of Frankfort, IN; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Leo Harlan Cox, Sr.
Leo Harlan Cox, 83, of Bluefield, VA, died Nov. 27 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Born in Parksville, KY, he was a son of the late Ira and Ethel Combs Cox.
He graduated from Bland High School in 1941. He was a member of the Highland Ave. Bluefield Va. Church of God and retired in 1983 having worked for 24 years as a salesman for Cole Baking Co. and Purity Maid Bakery.
He entered the Army Dec. 17, 1942 and served with the Communication Services Battery B. at Ft. Bragg, NC and served in WWII, serving three years in England and France and landed on D-Day in 1945. He served in battles during the Invasion of Normandy, landing at Omaha Beach and also in Northern France, received American Theater and European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbons and Good Conduct Medal and Victory Ribbon of WWII. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 20 in Bland and also a life member of the Bluefield, VA VFW Memorial Post 9696. He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 175 and had resided in Bluefield, VA, (Double Gates), since 1963.
He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Cleo Cox and other sisters, Norma Ruth Cox, Evelyn Barbour, and brothers, James Walter Cox, Karl Dennis Cox and Dean Cox.
Survivors: daughter, Donna Brown and husband, Sam, of Bastian; son, Harlan Cox and wife, Beth, of Bastian; brother, Ralph Cox of Glouster; grandchildren, John Brown of Lovell, WY, Chris Brown of Bastian, Marcus Brown of Bristol, TN, Jennifer Scott of Draper, Nathan Cox and Hannah Cox, both of Bastian; five great grandchildren; and special friends and caregivers, Nancy and Pete Smothers of Bluefield, VA.

Luther McKinley Davis
Luther McKinley Davis, 88, of Raven, died peacefully at his home with his family by his side Dec. 1 following a brief illness.
Born in Marvin, he was the son of the late Oliver and Ollie Proffitt Davis, both Buchanan County natives.
He had made his home in the Raven area most of his life and was a retired miner from Knox Creek Coal Company. He was a member of UMWA Local #6199 Red Ash. He was a U.S. Navy World War II Veteran and a member of John Ratliff American Legion Post in Grundy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Davis; one daughter-in-law, Claretta Davis; and one son-in-law, William E. Hale. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mabel Rhudy Ellis, 83, of Roanoke, died Nov. 20.

Annie Loular Smith Simmons Gross, 89, of Richlands, died Dec. 4 in a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born Sept. 14, 1916 in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Calup Jackson and Loula Elizabeth Lawson Smith.
She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, William M. Simmons; her second husband, James C. Gross; three brothers, Roy Smith, George Smith and Calvin Smith; and two sisters, Bendie Smith and Mary Meadows.

Born Jan. 20, 1973 in Bluefield, WV, he was a son of Fern Harrison Jr. and Linda Webb Harrison of Elliston.
He was a member of the New Life Church of Mt. Airy, NC.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Fern Harrison, Sr.; paternal great grandparents, Eli and Barbara Rose; and maternal great grandparents, Perry and Sophia Asbury.

Sandra Lynn Hill, 45, of Raven, died Dec. 4 at a Richlands hospital.
Born in Cleveland, OH, she was a daughter of John and Beulah Adams Lamie, both of Jewell Valley.
She was a graduate of Whitewood High School Class of 1977. She was a homemaker and had made her home in the Raven area for the last 19 years. She had attended the Living Word Outreach Church in Whitewood.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Eddie Dewayne Lamie.

Ermel Lynton Hunt, III
Ermel Lynton Hunt, III, 34, of HC Route 1, Raven, died Dec. 2 at his place of business after an apparent heart attack.
Born in Pike Co., KY, he was the son of Ermel Lynton Hunt Jr. of Deel and the late Vivian Carol Smith Hunt.
He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a graduate of Grundy Senior High School Class of 1988. He was a self employed contractor who enjoyed spending his time with family and friends.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Deaton and Vicy Smith, and his paternal grandfather, Ermel Lynton Hunt, Sr.

Nannie Naomi Jackson, 93, of Cedar Bluff, died Nov. 27 in a Glen Burnie, MD health care facility.
Born Dec. 23, 1911 in Lebanon, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Bertha Mosley.
She was a member of the Cedar Bluff United Methodist Church. She was the manager of the 5 & Dime Store.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Rooker Hawkins; her second husband, Andrew (Frank) Jackson; two sons, Paul Hawkins and Thomas Walter Hawkins; and several brothers and sisters.

English Joyce, 87, of Richlands, died Nov. 28 at his home following a long illness.
Born at Jewell Ridge, he was the son of the late Clifton and Mae Collins Joyce.
He was of the Apostolic faith. He was a Master Mason of Richlands Lodge #318 A.F. & A.M. He was a retired coal miner formerly employed by Jewell Ridge Coal Corp and Clinchfield Coal and was a member of the U.M.W.A.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ed Joyce and Jack Joyce; one granddaughter, Angela Nuckles; and one son-in-law, Lawrence Wyatt.

Frances Hall Kucheman
Frances Hall Kucheman, 86, died Dec. 1 in Tallahassee, FL.
She was born Nov. 15, 1919, in Lynch, KY, to Truby and Kate Hall.
She spent most of her early years in Virginia and graduated from National Business College in Roanoke, where she worked for an accounting firm and later for IBM in Richmond.
She was married for 40 years to Major General Henry B. Kucheman, the former commander of Eglin Air Force Base, Fort Walton Beach, FL, from 1972-1975. After retirement, Frances and General Kucheman lived in Shalimar, FL until General Kucheman’s death in 1987.
A life long Presbyterian, she was active in the life of her church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lt. Willard Kiser, who was killed in World War II.
Survivors: sons, William Henry and wife, Teri, of Sudbury, MA, James Quensen, and wife, Glenys, of Gorham, ME, David Brian and wife, Cindy, of Tallahassee, FL; brother-in-law, Allen C. Young of Chattanooga, TN; niece, Ann Igou of Richmond; and five grandchildren.

William (Lee) Patrick, 79, of Cedar Bluff, died Dec. 1.
Born Jan. 4, 1926 in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Jack and Nancy Brown Patrick.
He was a school bus driver for the Tazewell County School Board.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille White Patrick; one son, Kevin Patrick; and seven brothers, James Patrick, Eugene Patrick, Cecil Patrick, Roy Patrick, Joe Patrick, Davis Patrick and Isaac Patrick.

Born May 8, 1945 in Tazewell, he was a son of the late Charlie Harman Smith and Augusta Rose Smith.
He retired from the Town of Tazewell Maintenance Department.

Born in Saltville, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Millie Asbury Barrett, both Smyth County natives.
She had made her home in the Tazewell County area most of her life and was of the Protestant Faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Wheeler; one daughter, Emmileen Vannoy; one son, John H. Wheeler; one granddaughter, Deborah Davis; one grandson, Keith Cochran; one great grandson, Robert Davis; three sisters, Leona, Grace, and Patsy; and five brothers, Sherman, James, Robert, Everett, and Billy Joe.

Edith Shrader Beavers, 92, of Tazewell, died Dec. 9 at Heritage Hall Nursing Center in Tazewell.
Born at Canebreak, WV, she was a daughter of the late Clarence J. and Sallie Jones Shrader.
She had made her home in the Tazewell area for most of her life. She was a housewife and homemaker. She was a long time member of Adria Advent Christian Church where she loved being in the choir and the W. H. & F. M.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Newton Beavers, and one brother, Roy Shrader.

Russell Emory Boothe, 84, of Woodbridge, formerly of Abbs Valley, passed from this life into the arms of Jesus Dec. 5 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Rusty and Jack Pierson in Woodbridge.
Born Aug. 1, 1921 in Caretta, WV, he was a son of the late Luther and Nellie Mae Day Boothe.
He was a good Christian man and a member of the Abbs Valley Church of Jesus Christ. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in Germany with the 89th infantry. He was a retired coal miner from Jacobs Fork Coal Company.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Freeman Boothe; three sons, Lloyd (Dood) Phillips, Larry Boothe, and Lacy (Pete) Phillips; two sisters, Dorothy Bales and Delphia Hartsock; and two brothers, Orville and Harold Boothe.
Survivors: daughters, Rusty Pierson and husband, Jack, of Woodbridge, Sue Jaskiewicz and husband, Richard, of Stafford; stepson, Burl Phillips, Jr. of Martinsville; sister, Coleen Kirby of Thompson Valley; brothers, Ray Boothe of Abbs Valley, Kenneth Boothe of Anderson, IN; 14 grandchildren; and several great and great-great grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Minister Dennis Lambert officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA, where military graveside rites were conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.
Benjamin (Ben) Brown
Benjamin Franklin (Ben) Brown, 83, of Cedar Bluff, died in a Richlands area hospital Dec. 7 following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Charlie and Cora Mutter Brown, both Tazewell County natives.
He was retired from the Pounding Mill Quarry where he served as a demolition expert for over 30 years. He was a lifetime resident of the Tazewell County area and was of the Methodist faith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country during World War II. He was also a member of the Casey-Shortt V.F.W. Post #9640 of Richlands.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Myrtle Brown and Pearl Brown; five brothers, Rhudy, Dewey, Bert, Kyle and Earl Brown; and one great grandchild, Seth Brown.
Survivors: wife, Dona Helton Brown of Cedar Bluff; daughters, Bonnie Ball and husband, Danny, of Cedar Bluff, Joann Crouse and husband, Roger, of Honaker; sons, Jim Brown and wife, Jo, of Greensboro, NC, Lonnie Brown of Raleigh, NC; brother, Claude Brown and wife, Emily, of Swords Creek; grandchildren, Todd Brown, Susan Jackson, Kimberly Langston, Karen Carrier, Stephen Brown and Anna Magrini; six great-grandchildren; a host of family and friends; and special friends at Preferred Home Health and Community Home Health and Intrepid V.A. Care along with the nurses and staff at the I.C.U. Clinch Valley Medical Center.
The funeral was conducted Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carl Robinson officiating.
Interment
followed at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.

Thomas M. Burnette
Thomas Mason Burnette, 64, of Richlands, died Dec. 8 in a Kingsport, TN hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born in McDowell County, WV, and was the son of the late Tom Ed and Sarah Cash Burnette, both Tazewell County natives.
He had made his home in the northern Virginia for over 30 years prior to moving to Richlands 13 years ago. He was a retired carpenter and was a member of the Raven Pentecostal Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline Keen Burnette; one son, Dennis Christopher Burnette; and one brother, Edward Burnette.
Survivors: daughter, Judy Burnette of the home; son, Mark Burnette and wife, Marci, of Doran; sister, Josephine Stapleton of Taylor, MI; and grandchildren, Marcus Burnette and Marilyn Burnette.
The funeral was conducted Dec. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Carl Robinson and Rev. Clarence Brown officiating.

Hester Ann Caudill
Hester Ann Caudill, 90, of North Tazewell, (Springville) died Dec. 6 after a long illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel F. Thompson and Florence Earls Thompson.
She was of the Presbyterian faith. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Caudill; one son, James Edward Caudill; one daughter, Cynthia Louise Caudill; and several sisters.
Survivors: daughter, Charlotte Perdue and husband, Gene, of Bluefield, VA; grandson, Barry Perdue and wife, Natalie, of Bluefield, VA; great granddaughter, Ann Gray Perdue; brother, Frank Thompson of Bluewell; sisters, Lucy Thompson and Lola Stevens, both of Springville, Sue Brown of Tazewell, Virginia Puckett of Honaker; daughter-in-law, Ina Caudill of North Tazewell; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with Johnny Elmore officiating.

Maxie G. Davis
Maxie Geraldine Mutter Davis, 80, of Grundy, died Dec. 7 at the Mountain View Retirement Home in Lebanon.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Luther Glen and Virginia Adeline Shelton Mutter.
She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a graduate of Garden High School and was a member at the Vansant Baptist Church.
She was a former employee of Grundy Hospital and of Industrial Rayon Corporation in Paynesville, OH. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, Walter Andrew Davis, May 8, 1989; two sons, Ervin Gene Davis, Nov. 25, 1985, infant son, 1946; and one sister, Shirley Mutter.
Survivors: daughters, Nina Geraldine "Gerry" and husband, Charles Clendenin, of Florence, SC, Sandra and husband, Rollie Marshall, of Swords Creek; son, Walter Gary and wife, Gail Davis, of Bradshaw, WV; daughter-in-law, Oneida Davis and husband, Lewis D. Green, of Grundy; sisters, Peggy and husband, Kenneth Woods, of Mavisdale, Joan and husband, Dexter Horn, of Lorton; brothers, L. Guy and wife, Phyllis Mutter, of Bluefield, WV, Cecil Clinton and wife, Mareta Mutter of Texas; seven grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous step-great-grandchildren; and numerous relatives and friends.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Friends called at the Grundy Funeral Home Dec. 9 at 5 p.m. and the body was moved to the church at 11 a.m. Dec. 10.
Harold (Spivey) Dodson
Harold Kenneth (Spivey) Dodson, 84, died Dec. 11 at his residence after an extended illness.
He resided in Abingdon. He was a long-time resident of Buchanan and Tazewell Counties. He retired from Jewell Smokeless Coal Corporation in 1993.
He was born July 4, 1921 in Iaegar, WV. He was the son of the late E.B. and Grace Harper Dodson.
He was a member of the Pounding Mill United Methodist Church and Mountain View United Methodist Church at Abingdon. He served his country in the Navy and was a veteran of WWII. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sandy Valley Lodge #17, Scottish Rites, and Kazim Shriners.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Eichenberger.
Survivors: loving and devoted wife, Verna Lee Hudson Dodson; children, Rose Ann Dodson Hurley and husband, Steve Hurley, of Grundy, Delores Titus Switzer of West Virginia, Kenneth D. Dodson of Arlington, TX, Harold Dodson of Eccles, WV; brother, James Dodson of Ravenwood, WV; and granddaughters, Stephanie Rose Hurley Miller and husband, David Miller, and Shauna Megan Hurley.
The funeral will be conducted Dec. 14 at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Orlando Salizar, Rev. Donald Thayer and Rev. Howell Scott officiating.
Entombment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.
Masonic memorial rites were conducted at the funeral home Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. by Sandy Valley Lodge #17.

Harold (Fab) Fabick
Harold Victor Fabick (Fab), 83, died Dec. 7 in a Kingsport, TN Health Care Center.
He was born in July 2, 1922 in St. Louis, MO, and was a son of Phillip S. and Belle Henneke Fabick.
He was educated in the St. Louis Public Schools. He received a mechanical engineering degree from Washington University. He retired from PPG Industries, Crystal City, MO, after 22 years of service. He and his first wife, Mary, lived in Crystal City for approximately 30 years.
He was a very active member of Grace Presbyterian Church, Crystal City, where he served as a deacon and elder. He was a 32nd Degree Mason. In 1992, he and Mary moved to Louisville, KY. They moved to Kingsport in 1996. Mary died April 9, 1999. They had been married 51 years. He was a member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, Mary, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Phillip and Raymond Fabick.
Survivors: wife, Alexandra Tanner Fabick; daughter, Patricia Haynish and husband, Tom, of Solon, OH; son, Douglas Fabick and wife, Mary, of Kingsport; step son, F. Marshall Turner and wife, Terri, of Alpharetta, GA; grandchildren, Matthew Keller and Amanda Keller of Solon, Kimberly Fabick and Kristen Fabick of Kingsport; and step-grandchildren, Allie Turner and Trey Turner of Alpharetta.
Graveside services were conducted Dec. 10 at 2:30 p.m. at the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum in Richlands.

Gladys Barton Hayes
Gladys Barton Hayes, 84, of the Gratton Community of Tazewell County, died Dec. 11 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bluefield, WV.
Born Aug. 19, 1921 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late George and Susie Cook Barton.
She was a member of the Dial Rock Church of God in Tazewell. She was employed by Clinch Valley Community Action of Tazewell, with the Senior Companion Program, a job she enjoyed very much. She was a hard working individual all her life and would never let her age slow her down.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Elgan Hayes, and one son, Kenneth Layne Hayes. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: daughters, Ruth A. Willis and husband, Raymond, of Rocky Gap, Barbara B. Graham and husband, Benny, of Choctaw, OK, Kathie Cox of Bluefield, VA; sons, Samuel Wayne Hayes and wife, Ruth, of Dublin, Chester James Hayes and wife, Brenda Sue, Robert E. Hayes and wife, Linda, and Charles L. Hayes and wife, Janice, all of Tazewell; 18 grandchildren; and 32 great grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Dec. 14 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. John Canning officiating.
Burial will follow at the Horsepen Church of Christ Cemetery in Horsepen.
