Virginia G. Breedlove
Virginia Gosnell Breedlove, 85, of Pounding Mill, went to be with the Lord Dec. 21 at a Lebanon nursing facility.
Born in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Alta Dixon Gosnell, both Russell County natives.
She was a lifetime resident of the Pounding Mill area and had attended the Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Talmadge "Tal" Breedlove; one daughter, Margaret Compton; stepfather, Thomas Dixon; and one brother, Donald Dixon.
Survivors: sons, Larry Breedlove and wife, Patsy, and Mark Breedlove and wife, Lynna, all of Pounding Mill, Jerry Breedlove and wife, Betsy, of Bluefield, VA; sister, Mrs. Tommy Lawson, of Raven; brothers, Clarence Dixon of Tempe, AZ, John R. Dixon of Catlettsburg, KY; 18 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.

Carl Clifford Dale, Jr.
Carl Clifford Dale, Jr., 34, of the Mudfork community in North Tazewell, died Dec. 16 at his home.
Born April 8, 1971 in Tazewell County, he was a son of Rita Carol Dale of Mudfork and the late Carl Clifford Dale, Sr.
He was a 1989 graduate of Tazewell High School and was a member of the 1986 THS State Championship Football Team.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John Walker Starling and Ruth Virginia Starling, and paternal grandparents, Carl Eugene Dale and Evelyn Dale.
Additional survivors: son, Carl Lane Dale of the home; daughters, Courtney Denise Dale and Tiffany Rene Dale, both of the home; brothers, David Wayne Dale and wife, Lisa Marie, and Roger Eugene Dale, all of Tazewell; step sister, Leslie Ann Beavers Horne of Tazewell; and several nieces, nephews, and uncles.

Myrtle F. Davis
Myrtle F. Davis, 85, of Richlands, died Dec. 19 at a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late William and Rebecca Doughton Monk, both Russell County natives.
She had made her home in the Richlands area for the past 20 years and attended the Laymans Chapel Church in Richlands.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Franklin Davis, and eight brothers.
Survivors: daughter, Carol Ann Davis and fiancée, Dale Cardwell, of the home; son, William F. Davis, Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Manchaca, TX; sister, Emily Lucille Damron of Richlands; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Billy S. Howery, Sr.
Billy S. Howery, Sr., 45, of Witten Valley in Tazewell, died Dec. 20 at his home.
Born May 15, 1960 in Tazewell, he was a son of Mary Asbury Howery of Tazewell and the late Mose Howery.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Allen Keith Howery; one son-in-law, Michael Myers; and one nephew, Blake Howery.

Lillie Maude Cruey Bucklen Keen, 95, of Knoxville, TN, formerly of Tazewell County, died Dec. 19 in a Knoxville hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Raven, she was the daughter of the late Estil and Maude Rasnake Johnson, both Tazewell County natives.
She had made her home in the Tazewell County area most of her life and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Edgar Cruey; second husband, Bert Bucklen; third husband, Henry Keen; daughter, Maxine Keen-Noel; sons, Melvin Cruey and Michael Bucklen; step children, Ann Mutter, Terry Bucklen, and Larry Bucklen; sisters, Sadie Campbell and Nellie Osborne; brothers, Leonard and Jack Cline; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Verna Jeanette Proffitt Keen, 61, of Catawba, died Dec. 19 at the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
She was a member of New Life Harvest Church in Radford.

Dorothy Lillian Jones Lawson, 77, of Lebanon, formerly of Baptist Valley, died Monday, December 26, 2005 at her home following a lengthy illness.
She was the daughter of the late Clarence and Clara Mitchell Jones, both Bandy natives.
She had made her home in the Baptist Valley and Dix Creek area most of her life and was a member of the Bandy Freewill Baptist Church and a member of the Barnes-Beavers VFW Post Ladies Auxiliary of Tazewell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Herbert Lawson.She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include two daughters, Diane Combs and husband, Ronnie of Lebanon, and
Janet McReynolds of Marion; three sons: Dannie Lawson and wife, Linda, and Lynn Lawson and wife, Marsha all of Marion, Gary Lawson and wife, Debra of Meadowview; 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and 3 step great grandchildren.

Claude L. Lowe, age 85, of Richlands, Virginia, died, December 25, 2005, in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Coldan, Virginia and was the son of the late Thomas C. and Cora May Griffith Lowe, both Richlands area natives.
He had made his home in Richlands all of his life and was a retired miner from the Jewell Ridge Coal Corporation.He was a member of the UMWA Local #6167 Jewell Ridge, Oneska Tribe #61 of Improved Order of Redmen, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Appalachian Agency of Senior Citizens.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Carrie Nelson; three sisters, Jeanette Altizer, Dorothy Salyers, Marie Kinder; and three brothers, Raymond Lowe, Bill Lowe, and Orastus Lowe.
Survivors include five daughters; Elizabeth Lowe of Richlands, Doris Smith and husband, Larry and Carolyn Stevenson and husband, Tex, all of Cedar Bluff, Connie Herald and husband, Craig of Maxwell, and Debbie Jones and husband, Gary of King, North Carolina; one son:Thomas Lowe and wife, Pam of Wardell; one brother:Ervin Lowe and wife, Shirley of Marianna, Florida; special caregivers:Dorothy Hess and Wanda Martin; 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Linnie Mullins, 92, of Iaeger, WV, died Dec. 22 in a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Cordellia Viers Church.
She attended the Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sonny Mullins; two daughters, Virginia Mae Mullins and Dora Cooper; one infant daughter; one sister, Julie Keen; several brothers; and two grandchildren.
Survivors: son, Ashby Mullins of Compton Mountain; daughters, Carma Blevins of Iaeger, Norma Horn of Raven, Elsie Reed of Brenton, WV, Rita Bailey and Kay Bailey, both of Bluefield, WV, Ora Workman of Nemours, Gaynell Lester of Etowah, TN; sister, Vicy Compton of Compton Mountain. She leaves behind a well respected and special grandson who helped with her caretaking, Lawrence (Bubby) Blevins of Iaeger; 42 grandchildren; 63 great grandchildren; and several great great grandchildren.

James E. Null
James E. Null, 78, of the Spring City section of Lebanon, died December 23, 2005 at the home of his daughter in Roanoke, Virginia.
Born January 22, 1927 in Drill, he was a son of the late Everett and Lona Jackson Null. He had resided in the Spring City section for over twenty years and had retired from Consolidated Coal Company. He was a member of the Faith Tabernacle in Lebanon, Virginia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Keene Null on October 23, 2005.
Survivors include one daughter, Lynda Griffith and her husband, Jim of Roanoke; two sons, Larry Null, Sr. and his wife, Shelia of Spring City, and Ted Null and his wife, Sheli of Powhatan; one sister, Shirley Shinaberry and her husband, Jim of Stuart’s Draft; four brothers, Cecil Null and his wife, Thelma of Lebanon, Don Null and his wife, Rosalee of Richlands, Clyde Null and his wife, Shirley of Paintlick, and Charles Null and his wife, Dorothy of Tazewell; nine grandchildren, Larry Null, Jr., Tammy Adams, Kenneth Griffith, David Griffith, Timothy Griffith, Jonathan Griffith, Jennifer Magruder, Jessica Mattaliano, and Julianne Null; six great-grandchildren, Caleb, Joshua, Will, Una, Marcus, and Micah.

Frank Don Sturgeon, 66, of Grundy, died Dec. 19 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Frank and Ora May Davis Sturgeon.
He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of the Holiness Church and was a former employee of Bob Gibson Powder Co.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ann Stevenson Sturgeon, two sisters and four brothers.

Roy Walters, 79, of Goodview, died Dec. 19.
Born Oct. 22, 1926, he was the son of the late Thomas V. Walters and Emma Catherine Carter Walters.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II and the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by one son, Richard Walters; one brother, Ken Walters; and one sister, Alma.

Alice McKinney Wells, 80, of Tazewell, died Dec. 21 at Tazewell Community Hospital following a brief illness.
Born March 28, 1925 at Hiwassee, WV, she was the daughter of the late Marvin Dewey and Gladys Jacobs McKinney.
She was a member of the Alexander United Methodist Church at Bishop. She retired from General Instrument Corporation and later from Pet Dairy Company.

Vaughn Amburgey, 81, of North Tazewell, (Springville), died Dec. 17, 2005 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Born at Whitesburg, KY, she was a daughter of the late Hubert H. Amburgey and Lucinda Williams Amburgey.
She was a member of the Mountain View Church of Christ in Springville and had worked for over 40 years for Deskins Markets.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Jack C. Amburgey, and two sisters, Joy Cumberledge and Dorothy Fuller.

Harold "Buck" Ball, 47, of the Clark’s Valley section of Swords Creek, died Dec. 28, 2005 at his home.
Born Jan. 20, 1958 in Richlands, he was a son of Stella Mae Whited Ball of Clark’s Valley and the late Reece Ball.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was currently employed as a custodian at Raven Elementary School and was a former employee of Island Creek Coal Company.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one nephew, Jason Hess.

Goldie Clariss Belcher, 92, of Bluefield, VA, died Dec. 9, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born in Kentuck, WV, she was a daughter of the late Luther M. Hatcher and Amanda Taylor Hatcher.
She was of the Protestant faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Masil E. Belcher; a son at birth; two brothers, Roy Hatcher, Russell Hatcher; and three sisters, Almedia Hatcher, Carrie H. Smith and Irene Domer.

Brian C. Bowman
Brian C. Bowman, 35, of North Tazewell, died Dec. 25, 2005 at his home.
Born July 12, 1970 in Bluefield, WV, he was a son of Macie Jane Bowman of North Tazewell and the late Alfred Bowman.
He was a 1988 graduate of Big Creek High School in War, WV and a 1992 graduate of Marshall University in Huntington, WV. He served with the US Army Reserve 304th Military Police Unit in the Persian Gulf War during 1991. He worked in bank collections from 1997 to 2003 and later was employed by Aetna Insurance Company.

Ethel Prater Mitchell Burton, 81, of Pulaski, died Dec. 27, 2005. She was a member of A Place of Refuge Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Buster Mitchell, Sr.; four sons, Lonnie, Buster, Jr., Harold and Delbert Mitchell; and one daughter-in-law, Ruth Mitchell.

Hester Ann Caudill, 90, of North Tazewell, (Springville), died Dec. 6, 2005 after a long illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel F. Thompson and Florence Earls Thompson.
She was of the Presbyterian faith. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Caudill; one son, James Edward Caudill; one daughter, Cynthia Louise Caudill; and several sisters.

Geraldine Florence Reedy Davis, 66, of Richlands, died Jan. 2, 2006 at her home.
Born June 4, 1939 in Richlands, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Mildred Jones Reedy.
She was a member of the Church of Living God in Jesus Name.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Morrow and Janice (Jink) Johnson, and two brothers, James Reedy and Claude Reedy, Jr.

Retired Staff Sgt. Carl Franklin Dye, Jr.
Retired Staff Sgt. Carl Franklin Dye, Jr., 56, of Richlands, died Dec. 25, 2005 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Carl F. and Billie Jean Buskill Dye, Sr.
He was a retired 22 year United States Army Veteran having served during the Vietnam Conflict and Desert Storm and was previously retired from Burns and Pinkerton Security.
He was a member of The Wilderness Church of Richlands. He was also a member of the John Ratliff American Legion Post #164 of Grundy and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area. He will always be remembered for his passion for fishing, hunting and the love of his family, friends and country.
Survivors: wife of 35 years, Sandra Dean Dye; daughter, Sylvia "Carlene" Mehr and husband, Chuck, of Tallahassee, FL; son, Sgt. Carl F. "Duke" Dye, III and wife, Kimberly, of Caserma Elderle Army Base in Italy. He is currently serving in Afghanistan. Son, Spec. 4 Paul W. Dye of Fort Irwin, CA; sister, Patricia Gress and husband, John, of Zephyrhills, FL; brothers, Michael S. "Butch" Dye and wife, Donna, of Richlands, William K. Dye and wife, Sandy, of Cedar Bluff; grandchildren, Ashley, Brittany and Charlee Mehr of Tallahassee; and best friend and companion for nine years, his dog, Fancy Pants.
The funeral was conducted Dec. 30, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Aldie Allen and Robert Dye officiating.
Interment
followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
The members of the John Ratliff American Legion Post #164 of Grundy conducted military graveside rites.

Gladys Gray Edmonds, 91, of North Tazewell, died Jan. 2, 2006 at her home.

Michael Scott Estep, Jr.
Michael Scott Estep, Jr., 28, of Ray City, GA, was killed in an industrial explosion accident in Palatka, FL, Dec. 24, 2005.
Born in Murfreesboro, TN, he was a son of Michael Scott Estep, Sr. and Eva Gay Musser Estep of Grayson, KY.
He was a resident of Buchanan County several years, a graduate of Whitewood High School and served in the United States Army. He was a professional Licensed Blaster with Precision Blasting Company.
Additional survivors: wife, Danette Charles Estep; brothers, Kenneth Ray and wife, Angie Estep, of Dixon, TN, William Edward Estep of Lenox, GA; niece, Tracey Estep of Dixon; nephews, Daniel Estep of Dixon, Brandon Vanover and Tyler Vanover, both of Vansant; brother-in-law, Todd Vanover of Vansant; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral was conducted Jan. 2, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Little David Old Regular Baptist Church in Prater with Rev. John Charles and Elder Frank Newsome and Elder Jerry Newsome officiating.
Burial followed in the Charles Cemetery in Prater.
Services were held at the church Jan. 1, 2006 at 7 p.m.

Arvis Lee Keene
Arvis Lee Keene, 75, of Bluefield, VA died Jan. 1, 2006 in a Princeton, WV hospital following a brief illness.
Born at McDowell County, WV, he was the son of the late Andy Poe Keene and Rosa Beavers Keene.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Velma Clara Keene; one brother, Andy Keene, Jr.; and one sister, Margaret Stumbo.
He was a retired coal miner and a member of the U.M.W.A.
Survivors: daughters, Nancy Williams and husband, Ed, of Bland, Deborah Uhl and husband, Terry, of Bluefield, VA; sisters, Dorothy Hall of Troy, OH, and Ruth Keene; grandchildren, Angela Osborne, Heather Graham, Michelle Carter, Brad Adkins, Randy Williams, Jeff Williams and Sarah Riffe; 14 great grandchildren; a special K-9 companion Bridget; and a host of friends and neighbors.
The funeral will be conducted Jan. 4, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Phil Combs and Rev. Ted Anders officiating.
Entombment will follow in the Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Bluefield, VA.

James Ersel Kidd
James Ersel Kidd, 65, of Route 1, Grundy, died Dec. 29, 2005, at his home following a battle with cancer.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son the late Robert and Nettie A. Ramey Looney Kidd.
He had been a resident of Buchanan County most of his life. He was a member of Grundy Baptist Church and a graduate of Grundy High School. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a former employee of the Kentucky American Water Company with nine years of service, Southwest Virginia Coal Corporation and Race Fork Coal Corporation for ten years.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.
Survivors: wife, Charlene Raines Kidd of Rt. 1, Grundy; daughter, Debra and husband, Thomas Hackney, of North Tazewell; sister, Inez and husband, Ralph McClanahan, of Rt. 1, Grundy; brother, Avern Kidd of Pikeville, KY; grandchildren, Emilee Allison Hackney and Erik Grayson Hackney; and several nieces and nephews.

Allamae Morgan Mays
Allamae Morgan Mays, 69, of Maxie, died Dec. 26, 2005 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.
Born at Logan, WV, she was a daughter of the late Walter William and Omey Blizzard Morgan.
She had been a resident of Buchanan County several years and was a member of Harman Freewill Baptist Church. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and a homemaker
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland L. Mays, April 19, 2001; one sister, Mabel Morgan; one brother, Edgar Morgan; and one half-brother, Frank Morgan.

Henry E. McDaniel, Jr.
Henry Edward McDaniel, Jr., 78, of Bluefield, died Dec. 11, 2005 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Born in Waiteville, WV, he was a son of the late Henry Edward McDaniel and Mattie Carr McDaniel.
He was a member of the Methodist Church in Waiteville, served in the U.S. Army and was a construction worker for most of his life.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Joshua Moody; three brothers, Harold, Jack and Leo McDaniel; and two sisters, Thelma McDaniel and Ozela Johnson.
Survivors: wife, Mary J. Lovell McDaniel; daughter, Debbie J. Moody of Richmond; son, Wayne Lawson of Princeton, WV; sisters, Cloretta Bradley of Oklahoma, Verdene Dixon of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Stephanie Crews, Tabatha Crews, Stanley Crews, Elizabeth Lawson and Angie Lawson; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted Dec. 15, 2005 at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield with the Rev. Jerry Lester officiating.
Burial followed at the Grandview Memory Gardens.
Graveside services were conducted by Bluefield, Va. VFW Memorial Post 9696 and Pocahontas American Legion Post 14.
Juanita McGlothlin
Juanita McGlothlin, 67, of the Vansant area of Grundy, died Dec. 30, 2005 at the Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Pearl Dales McGlothlin.
She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, and worked as a former butcher for Wrights Market, IGA Food Haven, and Price Enterprises.
She was a graduate of Grundy High School.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.
Survivors: sisters, Effie Looney of Floyd, Nell Branham of Richlands, Etta Justice of Big Rock, Edith Deel of Altavista; and brothers, Edd McGlothlin of Vermilion, OH, Jessie McGlothlin of Kingsport, TN, Frank McGlothlin of Grundy, and Wallace Horn of Hopewell.
The funeral was conducted Jan. 3, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers Raymond Lester, Paul O’Quinn, and Johnny Cooper officiating.
Burial followed in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock.
