Nancy T. Yates
Nancy T. Yates, 74, of Homestead, FL, formerly of Tazewell, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jan. 11 in Homestead.
Born July 20, 1931 at Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late William L. and Clara B. Walker Tabor.
She was a retired civil service employee from Homestead Air Force Base.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard T. Yates, and one son, Tommy Yates.
Survivors: sisters, Judith Folden and husband, Lane, of Spring Hill, FL, Barbara Harris and husband, Bub, of Thompson Valley, Sandra Rea of Homestead; four nieces; and two nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 18 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Kenneth Gillespie officiating.
Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell.
John Thomas Ziats, Sr.
John Thomas Ziats, Sr., 85, of North Tazewell, died Jan. 9 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Born June 9, 1920 at Bobtown, PA, he was a son of the late Joseph and Pauline Kinvisky Ziats.
He was a member of the St. Theresa’s Catholic Church and Holy Name Society of Itnatius Catholic Church. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and was a member of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell. He was a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA Local #6025 of Bishop and J.L. Mine Local #6159.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jones Ziats, and one son, John T. Ziats, Jr.
Survivors: grandson, Thomas Matthew Ziats of Bland; brother, Frank Ziats of Bobtown, PA; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Matney of North Tazewell.
A Mass of Christian Burial Service was held at 8 p.m. Jan. 11 at the St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Tazewell with Father Dan Brady officiating.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 12 at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, where military graveside rites were given by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.

David Lee Akers
David Lee Akers, 45, of North Tazewell, died Jan. 15 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bluefield, WV.
Born April 27, 1960 in Iaeger, WV, he was a son of Jo Ann Massey of North Tazewell.
He was a member of the Mt. View Church of Christ at Springville. He was a graduate of Hurley High School in Hurley, and was a graduate of Nashville Auto Diesel College.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Samuel L. Massey; one brother, Timothy Carl Akers; and maternal grandparents, William Akers and Janie Akers.
Additional survivors: son, Travis Akers; daughter, Caitlin Akers and former wife, Teri Akers, all of Rocky Gap; brothers, Jimmy L. Akers of North Tazewell, Gary Paul Akers of Grundy; and sisters, Karen Carter of Grundy, Tammy Tupper of Athens, WV, and Brenda Kane of Gretchen, OR.

David Clinton Angles, Sr.
David Clinton Angles, Sr., 56, of Richlands, died Jan. 12 at the James A. Quillen VA Medical Center in Mountain City, TN.
Born June 7, 1949 in Tazewell County, he was a son of Mildred Lee Edwards Angles of Tazewell and the late Beverly Washington Angles, Sr.
He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a former employee of Pounding Mill Quarry at Pounding Mill and was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Carol Tipton and Joan Marie Wingo, and two brothers, Jerry Neal Angles and Beverly Washington Angles, Jr.

Cecil Joseph Ball
Cecil Joseph Ball, 85, of Belfast, died Jan. 19 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born Aug. 14, 1920 in Russell County, he was the son of the late Thomas Robert and Minnie Peck Ball.
He was of the Holiness faith, a minister for 53 years and a retired farmer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Ball and Thomas Robert (June) Ball, Jr., and one son-in-law, Carl Sargent.
Survivors: wife of 60 years, Pauline Reynolds Ball; daughter, Ileen Ball Sargent of Claypool Hill; son, Danny Ball and wife, Bonnie, of Cedar Bluff; sister, Euva Ball Robins of Baptist Valley; granddaughters, Sheila Sargent Ingram and Susan Ball Jackson; great grandchildren, Bobby Jackson III, Tanah Jackson, Brock Jackson and Aaron Curtis Ingram; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
The funeral was conducted Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Clarence Brown and Rev. Ellis Whited officiating.

Donald Eugene Ball
Donald Eugene Ball, 74, of Road Ridge, went to be with the Lord Jan. 20 in a Bristol, TN hospital following a brief illness.
Born Mar. 5, 1931, he was the son of the late Dewey and Myrtle Cordle Ball.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He lived his entire life at Road Ridge and was a member of the Road Ridge Assembly of God Church. He was a retired coal miner from Island Creek Coal Company VP1 for 24 years and was a member of the U.M.W.A.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, who raised him, Albert and Eddie Horton Ball; eight brothers, Carl, Lawrence, Marvin, James, Carness, Dahmon, Willard and Billy Ball; five sisters, Myrtle Ball Short, Ethel Ball Short, Alta Ball Lowe, Oakley Ball Carr and Frances Ball. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family in his generation.
Survivors: wife of 53 years, Myrtle McGlothlin Ball; son, Gary B. Ball and wife, Josephine, of Road Ridge; daughters, Regina Blalock and husband, Danny, of Newport News, Jolena Martin and Teddy Dye of Clarks Valley; granddaughters, Michelle Russ, Nichole Ball, Blane Ball and Jessica Blalock; grandson, Christopher Blalock; great granddaughters, Larissa Martin, Laken Martin, Madison Cecil and Taylor Dye; great grandsons, Ashton Lowe and Logan Dye; and a host of good friends and neighbors.

Dollie (Bonnie) Blankenship
Dollie (Bonnie) Blankenship, 59, of Jewell Valley, died Jan. 21 at her home.
Born May 12, 1946 in Jewell Valley, she was the daughter of the late Beve and Vernal White. She was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by infant twins, Johnny and Dona Blankenship; two brothers, Button White and Andrew White; and two sisters, Mildred Rogers and Ruth White.
Survivors: husband of 43 years, Vester Blankenship; daughters, Lisa Shortridge and Christine Blankenship, both of Richlands, Teresa Underwood of Brown Mountain, Tena Sherman of Myrtle Beach, SC; sons, Vester Blankenship, Jr. of Paintlick, Beve Blankenship of Richlands; sisters, Lula Mae Ellis of Wauchula, FL, Betty Sommers of Ft. Royal; brothers, Erwin White of Dunnellon, FL, Wallace White of White Springs, FL, Thomas Fred White of Vale, NC, Carl White of Damascus, Loyd White of Summersville, WV; 12 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

George "Dude" Bourne
George Curtis "Dude" Bourne, 83, of Gratton, went to be with the Lord Jan. 16 following a long illness.
Born Sept. 13, 1922 at Gratton, he was a son of the late Jesse P. and Hattie Mae Hagy Bourne.
He was a life long resident of Gratton and was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church of Gratton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II from 1942 thru 1945. He was retired from C & A Lumber Company and enjoyed farming.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Kermit and Arnold "Doc" Bourne; and two sisters, Alma Bourne Chaffins and Ercell Bourne Etter.
Survivors: wife of 59 years, Louise Buchanan Bourne; brother, James Bourne and wife, Crystal, of Gratton; special niece, Wilma Colley; and several other nieces and nephews.

Judy Katherine Boyd
Judy Katherine Kinder Boyd, 63, of Raven, died Jan. 21 at a local Richlands hospital.
Born in Jewell Ridge, she was the daughter of Evelyn White Kinder of Jewell Ridge and the late Paul Kinder, a native of Jewell Ridge.
She was a graduate from Richlands High School Class of 1960. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith.

Danny Carl Davidson
Danny Carl Davidson, 56, died Jan. 16 in a Butuan City, Philipines hospital.
Born June 23, 1949 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Harlan and Doris Davidson.
He had lived most of his life in the Buchanan County area and attended Corinth Baptist Church in Council. He was a United States Marines veteran having served in the Vietnam War. He was formerly employed as a coal miner with Island Creek Coal Company. He was a member and former employee of the UMWA.
Survivors: wife, Di May Lee Davidson of Philipines; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Penny Davidson of Lebanon; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Eddie Smith of Lebanon; grandchildren, Logan Ratliff, Alexis Davidson, and Hunter Smith; sisters, Mary Davidson of Rex, GA, Patricia Davidson of Honaker; and brothers, Harlan Lee Davidson and Gerald Davidson, both of Council.
Burial took place in the Philipines because of the love he had for the children and the peace and joy he found fulfilling his last days here on earth. He felt this was his calling and God gave him this time to have his dream. His spirit will always be here with his family, as well as the family he had come to love there. May his spirit rest in peace. We give God the honor and the praise for allowing him to fulfill his lifetime dream.

Jimmy Willard Dye
Jimmy Willard Dye, 59, of Raven, died Jan. 19 in a Richlands hospital.
Born Feb. 4, 1946 in Tazewell County, he was the son of Clara Stevenson Dye of Raven and the late Jency Dye.
He was a member of Fork Ridge House of Prayer.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Lee Dye; one brother, Sidney Johnson; and two sisters, Johnnie Dales and Helen Hill.

Terry Hall
Terry Hall, 51, of Lebanon, died Jan. 20 at her home following a long illness.
She was an employee of H & R Block at Lebanon and was an avid animal lover and member of the Humane Society. She attended the Belfast Full Gospel Fellowship Church and Souls Harbor Ministries Church.
She was preceded in death by her mother, brother, maternal grandparents and a special mother-in-law, Grace Hall.
Survivors: loving husband, Donnie Hall; son, Aaron Watson of Lebanon; step daughter, Crystal Hall of Richlands; father and step mother, Cliff and Avie Hutchinson of Knoxville, TN; brothers, Darrell Vincent and Michael Vincent, both of Mississippi, Jay Vincent of North Carolina; special father-in-law, Clarence Hall of Richlands; and a special K-9 companion, Molly.

Carl Preston Herald, 75, of Tazewell, died Jan. 14 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born Aug. 31, 1930 in Tazewell, he was a son of the late Jessie Franklin "Deck" Herald and Minnie Lee Hall Herald.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War and was a life member of the Barns Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Herald and Jessie Herald, and one sister, Margaret Ellen Amburgey.
Survivors: brothers, Curtis Herald and wife, Janice, Clyde Herald and wife, Ailene, John Herald and William Herald, all of Tazewell; and several nieces and nephews.

Lois Geneva Lambert
Lois Geneva Lambert, 67, of Honaker, died Jan. 17 in a Richlands hospital.
Born Mar. 27, 1938 in Swords Creek, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Pearlie Jane Newberry Wells.
She had spent her early life in the Honaker area and moved back to the area in 1971. She attended the First Baptist Church of Honaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one infant son, Fredrick Keith Corns; five brothers, Jessee Wells, Frazier Wells, John Wells, Claude Wells, and Robert Wells; and three sisters, Marie Corns, Deloria Elkins and Clercy Wells.

Amanda D. Lawson
Amanda D. Lawson, 94, of Tazewell, formerly of Bluefield, VA, left this world in the arms of the angels to join her heavenly father for eternal rest Jan. 21 in a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County Aug. 27, 1911, she was the daughter of the late William T. and Mary Letitia Alley Green.
She was a long time member of the Baptist Valley Assembly of God in Baptist Valley. She will be missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Wade Lawson; one daughter, Alice Lawson Witt, and son-in-law, Reece Witt, Jr.; one son, Jim Lawson; five brothers, Roy Green, Bill Green, Dewey Green, Warner Green and Floyd Green; four sisters, Annie Elizabeth Lawson, Ella Hash, Margaret Boothe and Eva Yost; and one niece that she had raised, Mary Alicie.

Ada Lane Lee
Ada Lane Lee, 65, a resident of Meadowview, died Jan. 1 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was born in McDowell County, WV, July 20, 1940.
She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Edward Lee, and one brother, Eddie Lee.
Survivors: mother, Hallie Sayers Lee of Waynesboro; daughter, Katie Cofflin; two grandsons; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Robert Williby of Mesa, AZ, Melinda and Gordon Rose of Clayton, DE, Eula Mae Lloyd of Bear, DE; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank Lee of Newark, DE, Dr. Paul Lee of Waynesboro, and Jack and Beverly Lee of Winston-Salem, NC.

James Mitchell, Jr.
James Mitchell, Jr., 79, of the Smith Ridge section of Jewell Ridge, died Jan. 18 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late James Milton and Barbara Ethel Vandyke Mitchell, both Tazewell County natives.
He was a retired coal miner for Grassy Branch Coal Company at Jewell Ridge and a member of Local #1594 of the United Mine Workers of America at Jewell Valley. He was a faithful member and Sunday School Superintendent for 20 years of the Jewell Ridge Church of God. He was a lifelong resident of the area.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Stella Caudill, Nina Meadows and Thelma Brown, and three brothers, Garfield, Harland and Paul Mitchell

Mable L. Plaster
Mable L. Plaster, 66, of Shreve, OH, formerly of Raven, died Jan. 17 at her home.
Born Jan. 17, 1940 in Richlands, she was the daughter of the late Charlie F. and Elizabeth (Moore) Goodman.
She worked for Diamonite for 22 years retiring in 1999. She was a member of the Shreve Calvary Baptist Church, past member of the Killbuck Valley Radio Club, Ripley Garden Club, a member of the Wayne County REACT and Wooster Mustang CB Club. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed gardening and making candy and canning.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Hugh, Calvin, Lloyd, Dan and Ray Goodman, and three sisters, Evelyn Belcher, Mae Goodman and Louise Stevens.
Survivors: husband, Garnet Plaster, and sisters, Gladys Robinett of Abingdon, Mary Ellen Pruitt of Doran, and Georgia Cordle of Huntsville, OH.

Betty Jean Ratliff
Betty Jean Owens Ratliff, 68, of the Leemaster area of Rt. 2, Vansant, died Jan. 17 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN, following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Jim and Rosie Ellen Runyon Owens.
She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Big Fox Community Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by one son and three sisters.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers Roy Lee Wilson, Chris Ratliff, Denver Barton and Evg. Michael Trent officiating.
Burial followed in the Ratliff Family Cemetery on Big Fox Creek near Vansant.
Services were held at the funeral home Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.
Peggy Ann Earls Sayers
Peggy Ann Earls Sayers, 74, of the Baptist Valley section of Cedar Bluff, joined her husband, family members and the Lord on Jan. 16 at her home following an illness of several months.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many. She was born in Finney and was the daughter of the late Joseph W. and Sylvia A. Sutherland Earls.
She had made her home in the Cliffield area all of her life and was a lifetime member of the Cliffield Christian Church where she was a very faithful and loving servant to our Lord and Jesus Christ and to the community.
She was a volunteer at the Alzheimer’s Respite and also volunteered at Tazewell Community Hospital. She was a former member of the North Tazewell Lioness Club and former member of the Tazewell County Democratic Party and also worked as a volunteer at voting polls.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ancil B. Sayers; one brother, Dudley Earls; one granddaughter, Nettie Elizabeth Sayers; and one sister-in-law, Erma Earls.
Survivors: daughters, Brenda Sayers, Linda McGraw and husband, Steve, Tina Keen and husband, Kevin, and Stephanie Jewell and husband, Calvin, all of Cedar Bluff; sons, Ancil Sayers, Jr. and wife, Regina, of Cedar Bluff, Stevie Sayers and wife, Faith, of Yulee, FL; sisters, Virginia Carner and husband, Bob, of Cliffield, Mary White and husband, Gene, and Nancy Colley and husband, Ray, all of Bluefield, VA; brothers, Kenneth Earls of Cliffield, Tommy Earls and wife, Jean, of Azle, TX, Joe Earls, Jr. and wife, Faye, of Roanoke; grandchildren, Thomas McGraw and wife, Shannon, Brandon Keen, Ashley Keen, Courtney Harrison, Hannah Harrison, McKinzey Sayers, and Alisa Burbo and husband, Jose; great grandson, Hunter Wayne Hess; great granddaughters, Isobel and Eva Burbo; and special caregiver, Hazel Hones.
The funeral was conducted Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Mike Harrison and Rev. Brian Richardson officiating.
Interment
followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Wanda Faye Shelton
Wanda Faye Shelton, 60, of Richlands, died Jan. 16 at her home.
Born Feb. 22, 1945 in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late Jessie and Bertha Ward Sims.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Robert Jeffrey Cox; one daughter, Melissa Cox; and two sisters, Sally McGuire and Lorene McGlothlin.
Survivors: husband, William D. Shelton of Cedar Bluff; daughter, Cynthia Cox of Honaker; brothers, James Sims and John Sims, both of Belfast; sisters, Madeline Reynolds of Belfast, Virginia Berlian of California, Lillie Reed of Ohio; grandchildren, Jeffrey Frazier, Kayla Frazier and Amber Hobson; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 20 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. James Sims officiating.
Ellis Shortridge
Ellis Shortridge, 79, of Doran, died Jan. 17 in a Salem hospital.
Born Oct. 21, 1926 in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late John and Ollie Harman Shortridge.
He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. He was a retired coal miner with Red Jacket Coal Company. He was a member of UMWA and John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Mildred Matney; one son, Rodney Shortridge; one brother, John Shortridge; two sisters, Georgie Keen and Alice Shortridge; two grandsons, Michael Street and Steven Matney; and two great grandsons, Brandon (Little Brandon) Shortridge and Mikie Dupree.
Survivors: wife of 60 years, Alma Juanita Shortridge; sons, Jerry Shortridge and wife, Sharon, of Chilhowie, John Shortridge and wife, Debbie, of Pounding Mill, Paul Shortridge and wife, Deloris, of Claypool Hill; daughters, Brenda Street of Doran, Linda Rife of Pilgrim Knob, Maretta Taylor of Cedar Bluff; brothers, Junior Shortridge and Harold Shortridge, both of Castlewood, Chester Shortridge of Richlands; sisters, Shirley Compton of Delaware, Nellie Hall of Meadowview, Trula Shortt of Harrisonburg, Dorothy Hale of South Carolina; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 20 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Clinton Dales, Rev. Darrell Sutherland and Rev. Charlie McGlothlin officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Military graveside rites were conducted by John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion.
Nona B. Smith
Nona B. Smith, 84, formerly of 124 North Highland Ave. and a Fairview Manor resident for the past three years died Jan. 16 at Heartland of Bucyrus.
She was born in Van Dky, VA, July 15, 1921 and was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Nora (Davis) Stillwell.
On May 26, 1938 she married Roscoe W. Smith and he preceded her in death July 31, 1979.
She moved to the area in 1954 from Virginia, worked for Strubles and the former Heckert Brothers grocery store and was a devoted mom and mawmaw.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Vernie Walters, two sisters and two brothers.
Survivors: daughter, Pauline and husband, Michael Moran, of Bucyrus; son, Rich and wife, Peggy Smith, of Howell, MI; 11 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; brother, Jay Stillwell of Richlands; sister, Ruby Ball of Raven; brothers-in-law, Roger Smith and Audrey Smith and wife, Lucy, all of Bucyrus; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Stillwell of Oceola.
The funeral was held Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. at Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home with Pastor Rich Rader officiating.
Burial was at Crawford County Memory Gardens, Crestline.
