Fred Woolum, Jr.
Fred Woolum, Jr., 77, of Mundytown Road, North Tazewell, formerly of Bradshaw, WV, died Jan. 25 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, WV.
Born April 19, 1928 at Verdunville in Logan County, WV, he was a son of the late Fred and Lula Ferrell Woolum.
He graduated from Iaeger High School, Class of 1948, and was a US Army Veteran of World War II. His working career included coal mining in Bradshaw, WV, work in the steel foundries in Ohio, and as supervisor in time keeping with Stewart and Warner of Chicago, IL. He retired in 1992 with 39 years of service. He attended Pisgah United Methodist Church at Tazewell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Lora Marie and Audrey Ruth Woolum; step mother, Rose Messineo; step brother, Joe Messineo; and step sister, Virginia Messineo Jones.
Survivors: wife of 55 years, Lucille McBryde Woolum; son, Fred Woolum, III of Lexington; brother, Davis Woolum and wife, Billie Mabe Horne Woolum, of Bluefield, VA; and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Graveside services were conducted Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield, VA with the Rev. John Denton officiating.
Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to the Tazewell County Animal Shelter. He loved his dogs, Ashley and Ralph, who were always by his side.
Virginia Mary Wright
Virginia Mary Barnett Wright, 79, of Cedar Bluff, died Jan. 27 at her home.
Born in McDowell Co., WV, she was a daughter of the late William Franklin and Myrtle Johnson Barnett, both Bandy natives.
She was a homemaker and had been a resident of the area all of her life. She was of the Pentecostal Faith and was a member of the Laurel Creek Free Pentecostal Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Wright; one daughter, Patsy Jean Hilbert; two brothers, Webb Barnett and Junior Vincent Barnett; and one great-granddaughter, Destiny Nicole Jones.

John Wesley Wyatt
John Wesley Wyatt, 44, of Tazewell, went home to be with Jesus Jan. 23 following a long illness.
Born Sept. 27, 1961 in Statesville, NC, he was a son of Lora Ellen McGuire of Tazewell and the late Hanford Wyatt.
He was a musician and loved his Fender Telecaster. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Monty, and one sister, Dorothy.

Jerry Ray Addison
Jerry Ray Addison, 50, of Richlands, died Feb. 5 at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of Peggy Wilson Addison of Richlands and the late Earl Addison, Jr.
He was a retired coal miner having worked for Island Creek Coal Company V.P.3. He was a lifelong resident of Richlands and attended Church of the Living God in Jesus Name at Doran.

Ray Edward Amos
Ray Edward Amos, 64, of Bluefield, VA, died Jan. 15 in a Bluefield hospital.
Born in Bluefield, VA, he was the son of Ethel Louise Johnson Amos of Wytheville and the late Clarence Edward Amos.
He was of the Protestant faith and had attended Graham High School.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Carl Monroe Amos.

Dennis L. Byrd, Sr.
Dennis L. Byrd, Sr., 60, of Chicago, IL, formerly of Raven, died Feb. 2 in Chicago.
Born in Raven, he was the son of the late John Harvey Byrd and Lola Mary Newberry.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Edward Lee Byrd, Walter Byrd and Jack Byrd.

Thurman P. Conn
Thurman P. Conn, 59, of Fenton, MI, went home to be with the Lord Jan. 26.
Born in Tazewell, he was one of 13 children born to the late William and Artha Conn.
He was a proud native of Tazewell where many of his dearest friends and family still reside. He moved to Fenton in 1964 and graduated from Fenton High School in 1965. He patriotically served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam. He valued time with his family and loved them dearly. A member of First Baptist Church for nearly 40 years, he enjoyed classic hymns and playing the piano.
Since retiring from General Motors in 2004, he worked on his 1968 Corvette, traveled and learned the game of golf.
He was preceded in death by siblings Russell, Clinton, Clifford, Walker and Alicia Conn.
Survivors: loving wife, Carol; four children, Eric Conn, wife Sheryl and children Chelsea and Alli of Fenton; April Parillo, husband Mark and children Ben, Jake and Andrew of Clarkston; Sarah Styf and husband Dan of Vienna; and Katie Conn of Chicago, IL; and wife Carol’s three children, Sara Sharp of San Antonio, TX; Brent Sharp and wife Sabrina of Fenton; and Cari Sharp and daughter Madison of Flint; brothers, Buford, Adron and Ben Conn; and sisters, Dorothy Herald, Shirley Bowling, Phyllis Rodriguez and Patricia Fisher.

Jettie I. Jones
Jettie I. Jones, 82, of Richlands, widow of the late Robert Ira Jones, Sr., died Feb. 5 at the Golden Age Retirement Home in Claypool Hill following a lengthy illness.
Born in Drill, she was the daughter of the late Oliver Hess and Martha Brown, both Buchanan County natives.
She had made her home in Richlands for the past 56 years and was a retired employee of the Clinch Valley Clinic Hospital. She was a member of the Cedar Bluff Community Church as well as a former member of the Richlands Rebekah Lodge.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Grady Hess.
Survivors: daughter, Charlotte Jewell and husband, Dale, of Pembroke; son, Robert Jones and wife, Peggy, of Bristol, TN; sister, Pinkie Killen of Richlands; foster brother, Troy Vance of Grundy; grandchildren, Kathy Crockett, Scott Thomas, Ronnie Jewell, Jr., Jill Jewell Barr, Bobby Jones, and Keith Jones; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Edith Irene Lewis
Edith Irene Dickens Lewis, 64, of Tazewell, died Feb. 2 at a Tazewell hospital.
Born at Horsepen, she was a daughter of the late Harley and Bittie Stilwell Dickens.
She had made her home in the Tazewell area all her life. She was a homemaker, loving mother and loving child of God. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed doing crafts. She attended Tazewell First Assembly of God and was a member of Horsepen Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Beatrice Cook and Olivine Buchanan, and two brothers, Truman Dickens and Clinton Dickens.
Survivors: daughters, Tammy Lewis and Tracie Lewis of the home; brother, Coy Dickens and wife, Jeanie, of Abbs Valley; several special nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews; her beloved pet, Jax; special friend that she considered as one of her daughters, Honey Sue Short-Bird.

Marie Shortt Lowe, 89, of Swords Creek, died Jan. 30 in a Lebanon hospital.
Born Sept. 1, 1916 she was a daughter of the late Elbert Lee and Clara Virginia Coleman Shortt.
A lifelong resident of the Swords Creek area, she was a member of Horton Ridge Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Salyers; husband, Claude Lowe; two daughters, Innas Bernice Vance and Ocie Mae Vance; three sisters, Ocie Mae Shortt, Ida Belle Newberry and Stella Keen; two brothers, Lawrence Shortt and Roy Shortt; one grandson, Rick Miller and one great-grandson, Desperado Gage Miller.

Leo Cook McCoy
Leo Cook McCoy, 85, of the Baptist Valley Section of North Tazewell, died Feb. 6 at a Tazewell hospital following a brief illness.
Born at Indian Creek in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Goffery and Bessie Mae Wilson Cook.
She had made her home at Baptist Valley and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had been an employee of General Instrument for ten years. She was a member of Dailey’s Chapel United Methodist Church for over 40 years and was a member of the Dailey’s Chapel Quilting Guild, both of which she loved.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow "Woody" McCoy Jan. 25, 1994; four brothers, an infant, Ed, Ellis and Baxter Cook; and one sister, Mildred Marie Cook.

Nannie Loma Mullins
Nannie Loma Elswick Mullins, 80, of Salem, formerly of Doran, died Feb. 3 in a Salem hospital following a brief illness.
Born at Bearwallow, she was the daughter of the late Noah and Carley Young Elswick, both Buchanan County natives.
She had made her home in the Bearwallow area for the first 19 years of her life and moved to the Spruce Pine area where she made her home for 43 years. She then moved to the Doran area in 1987 and made her home until last year before she became a resident of the Richfield Nursing Home in Salem. She was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Mullins; one daughter, Edith Jeanette Mullins; and four brothers, Lacy, Straley, Brady, and Alvin Elswick.

James B. Overby (Speedy)
James B. Overby (Speedy), 65, of North Tazewell, died Jan. 30 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born Dec. 24, 1940 in North Tazewell, he was the son of the late John B. Overby and Annie Marie Crawford Overby.
He was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses for over 30 years and a member of the Tazewell Congregation. He was a graduate of Tazewell High School and a member of the Football Team. He attended barber school in Richmond and cut hair at the Crippled Children’s Hospital in Richmond. He was owner and operator of the Ideal Barber Shop of Tazewell for over 40 years. He graduated from McLaine Business School in Bluefield, WV and received his Associates Degree in Arts in 1962.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fred and Mabel Louise Brunty; and brother-in-law, Ernie Brunty.

Lillian Rebecca Mathena Patton, 92, of Springville, died Feb. 4 at Carrington Place, Wytheville.
She was born June 30, 1913, in Interior to the late Ezra and Ola Mathena. She was a member of the Springville Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Charles Everett Patton; one sister, Bea Heldreth; and three brothers, Al, June and Harold Mathena. Her kindness and loving sense of humor was felt by everyone who was blessed to know her.

Rev. Cecil C. Presley, Sr.
Rev. Cecil C. Presley, Sr., 79, of Abingdon, was called home to be with the Lord Feb. 5 at a Chilhowie health center.
Born Sept. 25, 1926 in Council, he was a son of the late P.E. Presley and Maude Wampler Presley.
He was a retired pastor, having pastured several churches throughout southwest Virginia and Maryland. Although retired as a pastor, he never stopped delivering the message of God through his ministry.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Violet Mullins Presley; one brother, C.A. "Ashby" Presley; and one half-sister, Emma Tiller.

Edna Mae Pruett
Edna Mae Pruett, 88, of Clinton, MD, formerly of Tazewell, died Feb. 5 at the Southern Maryland Medical Center in Clinton.
Born June 29, 1917 in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Ella Rasnick Robinette.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sanders Bramble Pruett, three sisters and three brothers.

Stuart T. Remines
Stuart Thompson Remines, 84, of Bluefield, VA, died Feb. 3 in a Bluefield hospital.
He was born Nov. 11, 1921 in Thompson Valley and was the son of the late William Remines and Lillie Kinder Remines.
He retired from U.S. Steel in 1986 after 31 years of service as a welder, mechanic and a foreman. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Front as a First Class Boatswain Mate. He had lived in the Bluefield area all of his life, was of the Christian faith and was a member of the Midway Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Oscar "Doc" Remines, James "Jimmer" Remines and Bill Remines, and one sister, Katie Hill.

Brenda J. Sisk, 59, died Jan. 31 in Barberton, OH.
She was born Dec. 14, 1946 in Buchanan.

The funeral was conducted Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. at Cox Funeral Home in Barberton.
Burial was Feb. 4 at the Davis Cemetery in Richlands.
Wedsel Sherdon Stacy
Wedsel Sherdon Stacy, 59, of Cedar Bluff, died Jan. 30 at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
Born July 27, 1946 in Paynesville, WV, he was the son of the late Clarence and Della Mullins Stacy.
He was a minister who dedicated his life saving souls for God. He used his talent of music with the word of God to lead people into the kingdom of heaven. His greatest love besides God was his wife, Linda, an angel sent by God to help him through his life.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Priscilla Stacy and Carolyn Stacy.
Survivors: wife of 24 years, Linda Joyce Stacy; sons, Jeffery Scott Perkins and wife, Rachel, of Sevierville, TN, Danny Wayne Stacy of Roanoke, Kenneth Ray Perkins and wife, Crystal, of Lebanon; brother, Coburn (Cobo) Stacy and wife, Mary, of Breaks; sisters, Rita (Katie) Stacy of Abingdon, Yolanda Harriet McClanahan and husband, James, of Grundy; grandchildren, William Romano of Richlands, Kimberly Romano of Townsend, TN; great granddaughter, Whittney Romano of Richlands; very special sisters-in-law, Dolly Ison and Ruby Joyce; and special nieces, Kimberly Mullins and Della (Liza) McClanahan.
The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Feb. 2 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Jerry Casey and Rev. Clinton Dales officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
A service was held Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mettie Jane Sullivan
Mettie Jane Sullivan, 65, of Honaker, died Feb. 1 at her home.
Born Oct. 16, 1940 in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late Silas and Ethel Murdock Deel.
She had spent most of her life in the area and was a member of the Mt. Zion Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Lee Sullivan, one brother, Claude Deel, and two infant sisters.
Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Gerald Stevens of Honaker; sons, Billy Sullivan and wife, Tammy, of Big Stone Gap, Jeffery Stanley Sullivan and wife, Beckie, of Council, Michael Sullivan and fiancée, Connie, of Rosedale; sisters, Edith Sykes, and Irene Boyd, both of Council, Gaynell O’Quinn of Bee, Goldie Gilbert of Vinton, OH, Martha Presley of Richmond; brothers, Cecil Deel and Glenn Deel, both of Vansant, Arville Deel of Council; grandchildren, Amy Clear, Benjamin Sullivan, Jared Sullivan, and Jordan Sullivan; great-grandchildren, Tyler Clear and Jude Clear; honorary grandchildren, Jason Hess and Misty Hess; honorary great-grandchild, Baileigh Hale; and special friend, Ira Lowe.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Feb. 4 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Virgil Musick and Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating.
Interment
followed in the Sullivan Cemetery at Bee.
Wilmer "Bud" Sword
Wilmer Burke "Bud" Sword, 59, of Afton, died Feb. 1 in University of Virginia Medical Center at Charlottesville.
Born March 23, 1946 in Lebanon, he was a son of Charlie Burke Sword of Honaker and the late June Elizabeth Justice Sword.
Additional survivors: wife, Delores Ann Sword; daughter, Glenda Sue of Charlottesville; son, David Burke Sword of Manassas; sisters, Shirley Farley and husband, Ronald, of Woodbridge, Sylvia Jean Kennedy and husband, Jim, Linda Cottingham and husband, Frank, and Gail Compton and husband, Roger, all of Honaker; brother, Ronald Lee Sword and wife, Linda, of Dale City; and two grandchildren, Travis and Austin.
Memorial services were conducted at 1 p.m. Feb. 4 in the Trinity Pentecostal Church in Lebanon with Rev. David Wilmoth officiating.

Elizabeth Jane Toney
Elizabeth Jane Toney, 81, of the Adria area in North Tazewell, died Jan. 31 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born Aug. 29, 1924 in Tazewell, she was a daughter of the late Millard and Mattie Jane Boothe Thompson.
Mrs. Toney and her husband, V. E. Toney were the co-founders of Toney’s Market of Adria, which began business in 1945.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, V. E. Toney, and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors: sons, Roger Toney and wife, Lana, Eugene Toney and wife, Donna, and Curtis Toney, all of North Tazewell; daughters, Linda Hayes and husband, Ronnie, of Statesville, NC, Diane Sawyers and husband, Richard, of North Tazewell; sister, Rosa Pruett of Tazewell; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Feb. 2 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Minister Adam Toney officiating.
Burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell.
Fred (Butch) Waddell
Fred B. (Butch) Waddell, 72, of Woodhaven and a native of Tazewell, went to heaven to be with his loving wife Ginny, Jan. 25, after long suffering and by God’s amazing grace. He died at home surrounded by his loving family.
He often spoke of his friends and family in the Tazewell community and always considered this his home.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ginny, his parents, Etha Gray and C.W. Waddell, four brothers, Tommy, Roy, Lawrence and Lacy Waddell, two sisters, Ethel Vencil and Janice Altizer, all of the Tazewell community.
Survivors: son, Michael, daughter-in-law, Gina, daughter Kim, grandson, Lance and granddaughter, Kelly Waddell of Woodhaven, MI, and sister, Nellie Manganello of Crofton, MD.
Services were held from John Molnar Funeral Home, Brownstown Chapel.
Angie Viola White
Angie Viola C. White, 88, of Bluefield, VA, died Jan. 18 at her home due to a long illness.
Born in Bluefield, she was a daughter of the late Jessie C. Crutchfield and Jenny Lou Peery Crutchfield.
She and her husband, Theodore White, were owners and operators of Graham Floral and Virginia Ann Jewelry having started the business in 1946 and was also a member of the Brushfork Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore E. White.
Survivors: daughters, Virginia M. Steele and husband, George, of Lebanon, Teddy Ann Gearhart and husband, Charles, of Bluefield, VA; grandsons, Teddy R. Steele and wife, Sandy, of Tazewell, David P. Steele and wife, Carolyn, of Lebanon, Charlie Brown Gearhart and wife, Becky, of Bluefield, VA; great grandchildren, Brian and Becky Tinsley, Chelsa and Matt Whittaker, Eric and Lindsey Steele, Travis Steele, Ashley Steele, Victoria and Christian Gearheart; great great grandchildren, Madison, Preston and Ellie Steele, Abigale and Mallory Whittaker and Jackson Tinsley; half sisters, Jean Dehart and Lonnie Sue Miller; devoted caregivers, Carol Walker; and beloved grandson, Charlie Brown Gearheart.
The funeral was conducted Jan. 21 at 2:30 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with Rev. George Stamper officiating.
Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens.
