Ettie Irene Whited
Irene Whited, 81, of Bluefield, VA, died Jan. 18 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Born June 6, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Howie and Lucy Coeburn.
She was a homemaker. She was a devoted wife of the late Garnet Whited, devoted mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Brushfork Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Garnet Whited, two sisters and four brothers.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 21 at 12 noon at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with Rev. Danny Scott and Rev. Barry Fleming officiating.

Clara E. Anderson
Clara Ellis Anderson, 91, went to be with the Lord Feb. 7 in a Richlands hospital.
Born at Jewell Ridge, she was the daughter of the late Mathes M. and Belle Burke.
She was a devoted Christian her entire life having taught the children’s Sunday school for over 30 years and she loved to sing Christian hymns. Most recently she was a member of the Claypool Hill Church of Christ. She was a graduate of Richlands High School. She lived most of her adult life as a homemaker in Bartley, WV and Bluefield, WV and had lived at the Golden Age Nursing Home for the last four years. She had worked for West Virginia University as a nutrition aide in McDowell County.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, M. Earl Ellis; her second husband, Jesse Anderson; two brothers, Earl Burke and Ira Burke; and one sister, Naomi Burdette.
Survivors: son, Charles Ellis and wife, Sherrin, of Richlands; granddaughter, Amanda Bohon and husband, Chuck, of Richlands; grandson, Brent Ellis of Blacksburg; sisters, Dorothy Cook of Richlands, Ruth Dotson and husband, Robert, of Eleanor, WV; and brother, David Burke and wife, Eva, of Aiken, SC.
The funeral was held Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands with Pastors Bob Smith and Allen Jessee officiating.

followed at the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill with the Rev. Bill Keene officiating the committal service.

Clarence E. Ball, Sr.
Clarence Edward Ball, Sr., 62, of Seaboard, died Feb. 7 in a Tazewell hospital.
Born Mar. 15, 1943 in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late James and Nora Wright Ball.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was a member of Drill Freewill Baptist Church and was a disabled coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Juanita Smith, one brother, Bo Ball, and several half-brothers.

Rev. Rufus E. Barrett
Rev. Rufus Everette Barrett, 82, of Salem, formerly of Bandy, died Feb. 10 at Salem, following a long illness.
Born at Bandy, he was the son of the late Rufus Everett and Lisa Vinnie Dunford Barrett.
He was a minister for several years with the Free Pentecostal Church of God faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Celia Salyers Barrett; two brothers, Erby Barrett and Willie Barrett; and three sisters, Elvie Barrett, Ellen Barrett and Cora Allie Salyers. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family in his generation.
Survivors: daughter, Myrtle Ann Johnson and husband, Herbert, of Salem; son, William Thomas Barrett and wife, Wilma, of Goodview; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Jackie Lee Blankenship
Jackie Lee Blankenship, 64, of Red Root Ridge, died Feb. 12 at his home, following a brief illness.
Born in Coaldan, he was the son of the late Elbert and Pearl Short Blankenship, both Jewell Ridge natives.
He had retired from being a barber after serving the Richlands area for 40 years. He was a former member of the Richlands Masonic Lodge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Herman Mose Blankenship.

Ellis Donald Cole, Sr.
Ellis Donald Cole, Sr., 77, of Pounding Mill, died Feb. 8 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.
Born May 2, 1928 in Buchanan County, he was raised in the Florence Cole family.
He was a member of the Cedar Bluff Community Church; he loved his church and many friends. He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II, and was a member of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 in Richlands.
He was a retired taxi driver, school bus driver and carpenter. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of UMWA and was a very active member of the Democrat party in Tazewell County. He loved his auctions especially at the Rev. Rick Whitt’s auction house.
He was preceded in death by his adoptive parent, Florence "Grandma" Cole; his first wife, Beulah Houchins Cole; one son, Claude Ervin Cole; and one grandson, Jeremy Adam Cole.
Survivors: wife of 25 years, Jeanette Stillwell Cole; daughter, Betty S. Christian and husband, Curtis, of Collinsville; sons, Ellis D. Cole, Jr. and wife, Dawn, and Steve E. Cole and wife, Patty, all of Pounding Mill, Rick G. Robert "Frank" Goff
Robert "Frank" Goff, 53, of Council, died Feb. 7 at Bristol Regional Medical Center due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Born Nov. 9, 1952 in Richlands, he was a son of Ermma Joyce Pack Goff of Doran and the late Landrum Franklin Goff.
A lifelong resident of the Southwest Virginia area, he was a 1971 graduate of Richlands High School and attended Southwest Virginia Community College where he earned an Associates Degree in applied science in mining. He held several certifications in various electrical capacities. He was an employee of Dominion/Jewel Smokeless Coal Corporation since 1976, serving his last four years as a supervisor in the electrical department. Aside from his vast knowledge and accomplishments in the mining field, he was a fan of many sports and an avid golfer.
He was a Christian of Baptist faith and attended Corinth Baptist Church at Council. Robert, known by most as "Frank" was a loving, sincere and honest man. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, son, and friend. He was admired and looked upon by many as a leader and problem solver, one who could be counted on in any crisis. He brought joy and happiness to everyone that knew him. He will indeed be dearly missed by so many.

Edith Louise Harris
Edith Louise Harris, 85, of Abingdon, died Feb. 12 in an Abingdon hospital.
Born Aug. 5, 1920 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late James Harvey and Mary Alta Fuller Clark.
She spent most of her life in the Drill area, moving to Abingdon area 18 years ago. She was a member of the Main Street Free Will Baptist Church in Abingdon.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kelly L. Harris; one sister, Mary Phares; one brother, Pershing Clark; one granddaughter, Sharon Kay Maloy; two grandsons, Jeffery Harris and Douglas Miller; and one great-grandson, Jason Maloy.

Mae Watkins Hitch
Mae Watkins Hitch, 98, of Lebanon, died Feb. 10 at her home following a brief illness.
Born in Knox County, KY, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Riley and Zora Frazier Watkins, both Kentucky natives.
She had made her home in the Cincinnati, OH and Ft. Lauderdale, FL areas most of her life before moving to Lebanon five years ago. She was a retiree of Jordan-Marsh Department Stores in Ft. Lauderdale and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank A. Hitch; four sisters, Elizabeth Gabbenesh, Glenna Dullagahn, Wilma Klump and Alpha (Tommie) Jackson; and one brother, Riley Watkins.
Survivors: nieces, Zora Hillman, Susie Jackson, and Nancy Davis; nephews, Howard Klump, Wayne Klump, Larry Watkins, and Walter Gabbenesch; and special caregiver, Mae Perkins.
Graveside services were conducted Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. at the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum in Richlands with the Rev. Jeff Williams officiating.

Mary Ann McBride-Jackson
Mary Ann McBride-Jackson, 79, of the Mudfork community of Tazewell County, went to be with the Lord Feb. 12, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Oct. 7, 1926 in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Rufus (Britt) McBride and Sallie Wright McBride.
She leaves behind a legacy of kindness and generosity, freely giving of her time and meager resources to anyone in need. She will be greatly missed by all that had the blessing of knowing her. She had retired from the Town of Bluefield, VA and had worked for the Tazewell County Senior Program.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Clarence Jackson; one great grandson, Aaron Wright; one sister, Nancy Jackson; and one brother, "Joe Boy" McBride.

Harley P. Kinney
Harley P. Kinney, 74, of Palmetto died Feb. 9.
He was a son of Edward and Elsie Wenzel Kinney. He was born Nov. 12, 1931 in Rogers City, MI and came to Manatee County in 1958 from Blacksburg. He graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit, MI.
After serving in the Korean War in the 82nd Airborne, he graduated with a degree in architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg. Since the time of school superintendent J. Hartley Blackburn, he was architect for a number of schools in Manatee County as well as many local banks and residences. He was former president of Bradenton Country Club.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Louise Kinney.

Morland Jackson (Virgil) Rose, 71, of Jewell Ridge, died Feb. 7 in a Richlands hospital.
Born Sept. 26, 1934 in Dickenson County, he was the son of the late Tivis and Effie Perrigan Rose.
He was a coal miner and was a member of Dry Fork Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Jackie Rose and Ricky Lynn Rose; three brothers, Earl Rose, Gerald Rose and Burlin Rose; and one infant sister.

Born in Russell County, he was the son of the late Elbert and Virginia Coleman Shortt. He was a retired coal miner.

Joe L. Sparks, 79, of the Wittens Mill area of North Tazewell, died Feb. 9 at his home.
Born Aug. 13, 1926 in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Walter and Virginia Compton Sparks. He was a disabled coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Walter Sparks; two brothers, Walter (Witten) Sparks and Dallas Sparks; one sister, Geneva White; his half brother, George Sparks; and several other half brothers.

Edna Ruth Asbury
Edna Ruth Asbury, 76, of Rt. 5, Grundy, died Feb. 15 at the Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Stella Perkins Owens.
She was a member of the Little Prater Church of Christ and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bueford Thornton Asbury in 1989, and one brother, Elmer Owens.

Nannie Lou Billips
Nannie Lou Billips, 74, of Bluefield, VA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Feb. 11 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Born Apr. 28, 1931 in Abbs Valley, she was a daughter of the late Luther Billips, Sr. and Zenobia Brooks Billips.
She was a charter member of the Mudfork Church of Christ. She was a seamstress and had worked for Sealey Mattress and had retired from Aramark. She was a loving aunt, sister and a devoted Christian.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Clarence, Marlen, Ernest, Vernon "Bunny," Carl and Luther, Jr. Billips, and one sister, Gertrude Billips.
Survivors: sisters, Sally Sluss and husband, Albert, of Abbs Valley, Bernice Griffith and husband, John M., of Bluefield, VA; a niece, Lisa Bradford of Roanoke and a nephew, Tim Griffith of the home, both whom she helped raise; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Elsie Viola Compton
Elsie Viola Smith Compton, 81, of Council, died Feb. 14 at her home.
Born Jan. 11, 1925 in Council, she was a daughter of the late Walter Cleveland Smith and Armendie Lester Smith.
A lifelong resident of Council, she was a member of the Corinth Baptist Church in Council for 64 years, where she served as Sunday school superintendent and song leader for 30 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Clarence Robert Smith; two sisters, Hattie Mae Smith and Carmie Alice Keen; and one brother-in-law, Ralph Compton.
Survivors: husband of 61 years, Claude B. Compton; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Sharon Compton of Council; daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanie and Guy Fletcher of Honaker, Rita and James Mcvey of Charleston, WV; sister, Margie Compton of Rosedale; granddaughters, Maressa Monk and husband, David, Renita Hicks and husband, Jonathan, and Olivia Compton; grandsons, Byron Cook and wife, Becky, Ben Vanover and wife, Kathy, and Alex Compton; great-grandsons, Lance Monk and William Monk; great-granddaughters, Michaela Monk, Mercedez Cook, and Samantha Cook; sister-in-law, Libby Boggs Smith; brothers-in-law, Jack Smith, Curtis Compton and wife, Pauline, Walter Compton, Jr. and wife, Ada, Kenneth Compton and wife, Virginia, and James H. Keen; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Feb. 16 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Jim Huffman officiating.
Interment
followed in the Frank Smith Cemetery on Big A Mountain.
Alvina Finnell Durham
Alvina Finnell Durham, 98, of Tazewell, died Feb. 15 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born Oct. 8, 1907 in Sedalia, MO, she was a daughter of the late Earl D. and Lena Wallau Finnell.
She attended St. Peters Catholic School in Jefferson City, MO and was a very active member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Tazewell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest J. Durham, and two sisters, Frances Schrimpf and Earl Nienhueser.
Survivors: daughter, Mary Durham Blankenship and husband, Alan, of Tazewell; son, Donald E. Durham of Tazewell; grandchildren, Janie Marie Ruble and husband, Kyle, and Christopher Alan Blankenship and wife, Tina, all of Tazewell; great grandchildren, Natasha Blankenship, Nicholas Blankenship, Thomas Kyle (T.K.) Ruble, IV, and Jewel Lee Ruble; special friends, Carolina Ferrare, Oma Spradlin, Eleanor McCann, and Frances Mullins; and special caregiver, Linda Etter.
A Mass of Resurrection was conducted at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Tazewell Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. with Father Dan Brady officiating.
Graveside services and burial were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Resurrection Cemetery in Jefferson City.

Randolph Howard Etter
Randolph Howard Etter, 92, of Cloverdale Estates, Bluefield, VA, died Feb. 13 at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Born in Burkes Garden, he was a son of the late Samuel and Mary Burton Etter.
He was a barber for many years in Bluefield, VA and was a member of the Wright’s Valley United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Virginia Mae Etter; one son, Samuel Sherman Etter and two daughters, Nancy Harrell and Mary Jane Mulkey; four brothers; and one sister.
Survivors: daughters, Peggy Jean Osborne and husband, Richard, of Bluefield, WV, Georgia White of Bluefield, VA; special caregivers, granddaughters, Angela Johnson and Jenny Raley of Bluefield, VA; 15 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
The funeral was conducted Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Henry Johnson and Rev. Lacy Brooks officiating.
Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Richard Arlen Farley
Richard Arlen Farley, 74, of Bluefield, VA, died Feb. 16 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke.
Born Jan. 30, 1932, in Bluefield, VA, he was the son of the late Lindsey B. and Millie Newman Farley.
He graduated from Va. Tech in 1960 and served his country in the United States Air Force. He was employed as a patent examiner for the U.S. Patent Office and was a member of the Harman Lodge #222 A.F. & A.M. of Bluefield, VA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Jones Farley; two sisters, Wanda McQueen and Jacquelyn Waddell; and a special cousin, Buck Haun.
Survivors: sons, Ricky Farley of Richmond, Lindsey Farley and wife, Maureen, of Fairfax; former wife of 23 years, Gaye Farley, of Bluefield, WV; step children, Lynn Bentley of Wise, William L. Jones of Bluefield, VA; grandson, Aaron Farley; and several step grandchildren.
The family had a private burial at Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield, VA.

Stan Farmer
Stan Farmer, 84, of the Big A Mountain section of Honaker, died Feb. 16 in a Richlands hospital.
Born Dec. 19, 1921 in Bee, he was a son of the late Walter and Rebecca Jane Farmer.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was a United States Army veteran. He was an employee of Modern Chevrolet for over 35 years. He attended the Honaker Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant son, Ira Farmer, Jr.; seven brothers, Walden Farmer, Albert Farmer, Paul Farmer, Earl Farmer, Arnold Farmer, Donald Farmer, and Cleason Farmer; and three sisters, Mary Stevens, Martha Barton, and Ruth Thomas.
Survivors: wife of 54 years, Lorraine Farmer; daughter, Renee Farmer Settle and husband, Steve, of Charlottesville; brothers, Marvin Farmer and wife, Hettie, and Bayard Farmer and wife, Draper, all of Honaker; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Feb. 19 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Pastor Larry Brooks officiating.
Entombment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Lebanon.
Military graveside honors were conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon.
