Vernia Esther Roberts
Vernia Esther Roberts, 83, of the Rolling Hills Subdivision-Gratton, Tazewell, went to be with her Lord and Savior Aug. 10, following a brief illness.
Born Jan. 12, 1923 in Jewell Ridge, she was a daughter of the late Walter Floyd and Maggie Ellen Joyce Christian.
She was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Wade Roberts; two sons, Melvin "Buddy" Roberts and James I. Roberts; and eight siblings.
Survivors: daughters, Lillian Bales of the home, Juanita Pendergrass and husband, Kyle, of Leo, IN, Lavina Rye and husband, Bob, of Danville; sons, Johnny Roberts of the home, Milfred Roberts and wife, Judy, of Clearfork-Tazewell; 12 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren whom loved their "Mommaw" dearly.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 13 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Minister Jimmy Meadows officiating.
Burial followed at the Sawyers Family Cemetery at Smith Ridge in Tazewell County.
Dewey "Duke" Clifford Sparks
Dewey "Duke" Clifford Sparks, 67, of North Tazewell, died Aug. 11 in a Tazewell County hospital, following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell, he was the son of Beulah Boyd Sparks and the late Robert Lee Sparks.
He had worked for Consol Coal Company, for 22˝ years and had retired from their Amonate Coal operation. He was a member of the UMWA local 6633. He was of the Methodist faith and had lived in the Tazewell area his entire life. He had a love for gardening. He received great pleasure from the challenge of growing a vegetable garden and tasting the fresh food. In his day, he enjoyed coon hunting and attended shooting matches where he walked away with many prizes when he won.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Sparks and his grandparents.
Survivors: loving wife of 45 years, Rebecca Lou Sparks of North Tazewell; mother, Beulah Boyd Sparks of Tazewell; sisters, Marion Gail Sparks and Bonnie Hagy and husband, Donald, all of Tazewell; brothers, Ivan "Tuck" Sparks, Bailey Ray Sparks, Lonnie Lee Sparks and wife, Connie, and Ronnie Carl Sparks, all of Tazewell; niece, Rachel Meadows of Tazewell; and great-nieces, Hannah and Hayden of Tazewell.

Daniel Boone Stevenson
Daniel Boone Stevenson, 78, of Tazewell, formerly of Bluefield, VA, died Aug. 8 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell.
Born Oct. 15, 1927 in Yards, WV, he was a son of the late Clarence William Stevenson and Lena Mae Lowery Stevenson.
He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. He enjoyed participating in area flea markets for many years prior to his declining health.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years on July 20, 2006, Ellen Ruth Brown Stevenson; one granddaughter, Melissa Ann Thomas; one sister, Annie Stevenson Austin; and two brothers, Roy Stevenson and James Matthew Stephenson.

Peggy Jane Tiller
Peggy Jane Tiller, 54, of Honaker, died Aug. 8 in a Lebanon hospital.
Born Oct. 2, 1951 in Toledo, OH, she was a daughter of the late G.O. "Johnny" and Betty Jo Stoots Tiller.
She had spent most of her life in the area and was a member of Honaker First Baptist Church. A 1971 graduate of Honaker High School, she was a homemaker and a substitute teacher.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Tony and Hazel Stoots and Holliday and "Mamaw" Tiller.
Survivors: son, Gerald Lee Joyce of New Orleans, LA; daughter, Karen Helmandollar and husband, Kevin, of Cedar Bluff; grandchildren, Seth Helmandollar and Jacob Helmandollar; twin brother, Mike Tiller and wife, Kathy, of Bristol, TN; nephew, Ben Tiller of Bristol, TN; niece, Kacy Tiller of Bristol, TN; and special friends, Moe Vandyke of Honaker, and Coma and Brian Tiller of Abingdon.

Thomas "Yo-Yo" Young
Thomas L. "Yo-Yo" Young, 64, of Swartz Creek, died July 28 at McLaren Regional Medical Center.
Born in Jewell Ridge Aug. 2, 1941, he was the son of the late Harvey and Nannie B. (Day) Young.
He served his country in the United States Army. He married Patsy Ann Lyons June 25, 2000 in Swartz Creek. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting and bowling. He retired from the Chevrolet Plant with 30 years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Edith Jackson, and three brothers, George Young, Junior Young and Bill Effler.
Survivors: wife, Patsy of Swartz Creek; daughter, Michelle Boettcher of Flushing; sisters, Ruby McGraw of Flint, Nannie and husband, Roger Mosley, of Virginia, Vernie Nichols of Virginia, Mildred Goss of Virginia, Bessie Arnold of Florida; brothers, Floyd and wife, Anna Young, of Virginia, Luke and wife, Wanda Young, of Indiana; and many nieces and nephews.

Ada T. Hall
Ada T. Hall, 93, of Honaker, died Aug. 21 in a Lebanon hospital.
Born Nov. 12, 1912 in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late William and Ida Thompson Thomas.
She had resided in Honaker since 1979, spending most of her life in Buchanan County. She was a member of the Honaker Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Burt Hall; one step-son, C.B. Hall; one brother, Brady Thomas; two sisters, Lacy Church and Helen Prater; and several half-brothers and half-sisters. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: daughters, Bonnie Bailey and husband, Earl, of Honaker, Helen Johnson and husband, Clayton, of Rowe; son, Hurshel Hall and wife, Carol, of Manassas; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several half-brothers, and half-sisters.

Kenneth Lee Honaker
Kenneth Lee Honaker, 47, of Swords Creek, went to be with Jesus, Aug. 16 in a Richlands hospital.
Born March 25, 1959 in Tazewell County, he was a son of Dorothy Dye Honaker of Swords Creek and the late Charlie A. Honaker.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was of the Baptist faith.

Christopher E. Justice, 27, of Vansant, died Aug. 19.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of Lucille Deel Justice of Vansant and the late James C. Justice.
He was a former employee of Wendy’s Restaurant.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Brian Keith Justice, June 12, 1985; paternal grandfather, John F. Justice; and maternal grandparents, Alfred Burton and Stacy Bell Deel.

Charles Elmer Keen, 60, of Grundy, died Aug. 17 in a Bristol, TN, hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Marion W. and Marinda Virgie Harman Keen, both Buchanan County natives.
He had spent his entire life in the Buchanan County area and was of the Protestant faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James W. Keen and Kermit Keen, Jr.

Andrew Chapman Lane
Andrew Chapman Lane, 78, of Road Ridge in Raven, died Aug. 15 at the home of his daughter, following a lengthy illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Tazewell County and was the son of the late James Basil and Eva Hurt Lane.
He served his country while enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean conflict, 1948-1952, and also enlisted with the US Army National Guard in 1964. He had been a truck driver, having hauled coal and also working for Prestige Ford before his retirement. He was a member of Road Ridge Assembly of God Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by nine of his brothers and two sisters.
Survivors: daughter, Patricia Ball and husband, Danny, of Raven; son, Jeffrey Lane of Knoxville, TN; brother, Den Lane of Richlands; and grandson, Allen Ball.

George P. Lockhart
George P. Lockhart, 76, of the Prater section of Vansant, died Aug. 16 at his home following a brief illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Tom and Bertha O’Quinn Lockhart.
He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was an active member of Coleman United Methodist Church for 51 years. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict assigned to the BTRY "A" 45th AAA GN BN Germany, receiving the Occupational medal (Germany). He was a retired employee of Island Creek Coal Corporation VP #1 and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 1509. He enjoyed fishing, wood working and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Edna Cundiff, Dolly Lester and Leah Lockhart; and one brother, Roy Lockhart.

Ethel Mae Sweeney Mullins, 72, of Grace Health Care in Abingdon, formerly of the Compton Mountain section of Buchanan County, went home to be with the Lord Aug. 19 at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, following a long illness.
Born in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Bill and Lula Bell Sweeney.
She was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith and was a member of the Rosa Cole Pentecostal Church.

James Perkins
James Perkins, 58, of Lexington, NC, formerly of Richlands, died Aug. 14 at his residence.
He was born Jan. 12, 1948, in Russell County, to Lance and Ada Marie Hess Perkins.
He was formerly employed with Design Masters in High Point.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Robert Perkins.

Rosie E. Davidson Adcock, 79, of Mount Gilead, OH, died Aug. 23 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born Oct. 9, 1926 in Raven, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Margie E. (Asbury) Mabe.
She was retired from Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH, after working as a cook there for 35 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, John D. Davidson.

Dolores Burton Barnett
Dolores Burton Barnett, 70, of Grand Island, FL, died Aug. 26 in a Richmond hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Bradshaw, WV, she was the daughter of the late Bennie V. Burton and Margaret Octavia Simmons.
She enjoyed spending time with family and reading. She lived in Richmond for over 35 years before moving to Tazewell in 1996. In 2001, she relocated to Central Florida.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Thomas Barnett, an infant daughter and two brothers, Adam Douglas Burton and Kenneth Burton.
Survivors: daughters, Crystal Barnett Perugino of Leesburg, FL, Desiree Barnett Tenenbaum of Richmond, and granddaughters, Stacey Johnson and Taylor Perugino.

Rita Jean Davis, 55, of Cedar Bluff, went to be with the Lord Aug. 26 at Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, WV, following a lengthy illness.
Born July 1, 1951 at Princeton, WV, she was a daughter of Shirley Barker of Princeton and Joseph Wimmer of Cleveland, OH.
She was a former employee of Cumberland Mountain Community Service where she worked in rehabilitation. She was a member of the Baptist Valley Assembly of God Church in Cedar Bluff and will be greatly missed by a host of family and church family.
She was preceded in death by one son, Kevin Wayne Shorter, earlier this year.

Jennie L. Larimer, 67, of Dalton, died Aug. 22.
She was born Feb. 26, 1939 in Tazewell.
She is the daughter of the late Thomas Pierce and Felicia Lockhart.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Tom, John, Dave and Link Lockhart, and one sister, Louise Drozd.
She was a part of the Dalton Public School systems for over 31 years. She loved being involved with the inner workings of the school system, the children and it was the place where she made alot of lifelong friends.
Survivors: husband of 49 years, William Larimer of Dalton; son, Tom Larimer of Marietta, GA; daughter, Lisa Larimer Wood of Dalton; grandson, Mason Wood of Dalton; sister, Mary Elizabeth Munsey of Atlanta, GA and husband, John; niece, Betsy Fenton and family of Atlanta; mother-in-law, Katherine Larimer Correll of Tazewell; brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Lynne Larimer of Tazewell, Betty and Sam Larimer of Barnesville, GA; and several nieces and nephews. In life, there are special people that cross your path that are as much like family as your own. For Jennie, those people included Ellen Mays Bailey, Margaret Benson, George Jones, Peggy Holmes, Lorie McCamy, O.G., Martha Morrison, the friends she had in the Dalton Public School system especially Dalton Middle School and the friends she loved and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with at the Dalton Elks Club. She had so many people she loved and that loved her, there is no way to mention them all. Jennie was an artistic, strong-spirited, genuine, kind, elegant and extremely generous woman that touched so many lives. To her immediate family, she was the bond that kept them together with her strength, courage and love. She was their heart and soul. Her wonderful spirit will live forever within them all.
Services to celebrate her life were held Aug. 26 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Dalton, GA, with Rev. Tyler Downing and Rev. Timothy McIntosh officiating.
Burial was in the Whitfield Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Juanita Pruitt Newberry, 85, of Richlands, died Aug. 21 at her home.
Born Nov. 25, 1920 in Matewan, WV, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Hattie Hess Pruitt.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Newberry; step mother, Exie Pruitt; three daughters, Jettie Newberry, Pearl Newberry and Virginia Lee Newberry; one granddaughter, Anita Vance; and two sisters, Thelma Elswick and Bonnie Evans.

Thomas "Tom" Robinette
Thomas A. "Tom" Robinette, 69, of the Gratton community in Tazewell, died Aug. 22 at his home.
Born Feb. 10, 1937 in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late James H. Robinette, Sr. and Minnie B. Pilkins Robinette.
He was employed by Tri State Livestock Market in Abingdon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Fields Robinette, and one brother, James H. Robinette, Jr.
Survivors: daughter, Debra Robinette Lawson and husband, Gary, of Meadowview; sisters, Evelyn Cox and husband, Ray, of Tazewell, Sandra Burkes of Virginia Beach; brother, Roger Robinette and wife, Mildred, of Tazewell; and step grandson, Eric Lawson of Christiansburg.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Aug. 25 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. John Canning officiating.
Burial followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Esther Sebastin
Esther Sebastin, 90, of Berwind, WV, died Aug. 25 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.
Born Dec. 8, 1915 at Perth Amboy, NJ, she was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Poch Gall.
She was a member of the Christ the King Catholic Church in War, WV, and was retired from the United States Postal Service after 20 years of employment as a Postal Clerk.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen J. Sebastin, and two brothers, Steve Gall and Alec Gall.
Survivors: daughter, Kathryn Conrad and husband, David, of Columbus, OH; special niece, Debbie Davidson and husband, Marvin, of Tazewell; brother, John Gall of Warriormine, WV; sister, Helen Hamro of Oakwood; grandchildren, Matthew Conrad and wife, Tracey, of Athens, OH, Cristine Shaheen and husband, Michael, of Reynoldsburg, OH; great grandchildren, Ben and Abbey Conrad and Sam Shaheen; special great niece, Sarah Davidson of Princeton, WV; and special great nephew, Stephen Davidson of Danville.
A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted at 1 p.m. Aug. 28 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Father Tan Viet Nguyen officiating.
Burial followed at the Hartwell Cemetery in Hartwell, WV.

Roy Leon Warburton
Roy Leon Warburton, 68, of Rosedale, formerly of Elkton, MD, died Aug. 25 at Bristol Regional Medical Center, after a lengthy illness.
Born May 30, 1938 in Pocahontas, he was the son of the late Charles and Sarah Janet Warburton.
He served his country in the United States Air Force and retired after 34 years from NVF Corporation in Yorklyn, DE. He attended Cecil County Community College in North East, MD and University of Delaware, Newark, DE. He was also a volunteer for "The Gift of Life" of Philadelphia, PA. He was the recipient of a double lung transplant ten years ago. He attended the Assembly of God Church in Elkton, MD.
He was a loving husband, father and granddad.

Survivors: loving wife of 45 years, Betty Horne Warburton; son, Charles Edward Warburton and wife, Lynne, of Frederick, MD; grandchildren, Andrew and William Warburton of Frederick, Travis Warburton of Frostburg, MD, Rachel Warburton of North East, MD; brothers, Allen Warburton of North Tazewell, James D. Warburton of Bluewell, WV; his sheltie pet dog, Scottie; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Aug. 28 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff.
Burial followed in the Horne-Addison Family Cemetery at Grays Branch in Cedar Bluff.
Military graveside rites were conducted by the American Veterans Honor Guard Association.
