Paul Wayne Hagan
Paul Wayne Hagan, 68, of Abingdon, formerly from Bastian, died Sept. 11 in Abingdon.
Born in Princeton, WV, he was a son of the late Oscar C. Hagan and Opal Rowland Hagan.
He received his education in Bland Co. Schools.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Pat Hagan, William C. Hagan, Charles R. Hagan, Lawrence E. Hagan, and three sisters, Lillian Hagan, Polly Daniely and Beulah Pritchett.
Survivors: sisters, Jean V. Gore of Toledo, OH, Dora C. Pritohand of Portsmouth, Barbara Wilson of Toledo, Ruby L. Estep of Bluefield, WV, Carol Pauley of Bland; brother, Bernard Hagan of Christiansburg; special sister-in-law, Betty Hagan; special nephew, Keith Gore; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Bastian with Paul Looney officiating.
Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA was in charge of arrangements.

Carey Lee Hale
Carey Lee Hale, 54, of the Wysor Valley section of Honaker, died Sept. 18 in a Charlottesville hospital.
Born June 13, 1952 in Richlands, he was a son of the late Carey Winfred and Lula Boyd Hale.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was a member of the Outreach Temple in Wysor Valley. He was a disabled foreman with Jewell Smokeless Coal and Coke with 30 years of service. As a hobby, he was an avid horseman and cattleman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Ann Hale.
Survivors: wife of 35 years, Ruthie Deskins Hale; daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Jerl Keene of Honaker; son, Joshua Hale of Honaker; grandsons, Corey Keene and Keyton Keene; brothers, L.W. Hale of Honaker, Robert Hale and Sue Griffin of Selma, NC; sisters, Brenda Pritt and husband, O.J., of Rosedale, Alma Farmer and husband, Nolan, of Honaker; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Linda Deskins, Donnie and Susie Deskins, and Richard and Debbie Deskins; several nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and friends.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Arvil Arwood, Rev. Lester Meadows, Rev. Kenny Taylor, and Rev. Phillip Cook officiating.
Interment will follow in the Boyd Cemetery in Honaker.

Larry Dean Harris
Larry Dean Harris, 40, of Honaker, died Sept. 14 in a Lebanon hospital.
Born Sept. 30, 1965 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Herbert and Eula Street Harris.
He was a lifelong resident of the area.
Survivors: wife, Peggy Sue Harris; children, Amanda Harris and Angela Heredia and husband, Michael, all of Honaker, Dean Green and wife, Melissa, of Richlands; brothers, Glenn Harris, Jack Harris and wife, Delphie, Richard Harris and wife, Kathy, David Harris, and James Harris, all of Honaker; sister, Judy Maynard and husband, Chester, of West Virginia; four grandsons; and three granddaughters.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 15 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Harless Hess officiating.

Joseph Dale Hess
Joseph Dale Hess, 72, of the Shannon’s Branch Road section of Baptist Valley, died Sept. 15 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Raven, he was the son of the late Joseph C. and Polly Pratter Hess.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a retired coal miner from Island Creek Coal Company. He was a member of the Full Gospel Outreach Ministries and was a U.S. Army peacetime veteran.
Joseph Dale Hess has left us with a love and understanding that came from deep inside his heart. He worked and lived the life of a coal miner-a hard life to support his wife and children, but he always took the time to be the husband and dad God intended him to be. Joe and his precious wife Linda blessed many lives with their bluegrass Christian music: The Glorybound Travelers. This was their gift and they gave freely.
Joe loved his fruit trees and took great pride in his orchards and he loved to share with others. He was a proud man and was proud he served his country in the military and was proud of his eight children and many grandchildren and was most proud of his wife Linda. The life he lived was a testimony in itself. His friends, Harold Shrader, Delmar Cox, and Shawn Roberts, and the special times they spent together brought a great joy to him. He gave his wife, children and friends love, joy, laughter, and respect. This was Joe Hess, husband, father, and friend. His memory will live forever in their hearts.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Kimberly Stevenson; three sisters, Annie Brown, Cleo Craighead, and Margaret Hess; four brothers, Ted Hess, Balford Hess, Earl Hess, and Arvil Hess; and two infant brothers, Willie and Earnest Hess.
Survivors: wife of 32 years, Linda Sue Hess; daughters, Nancy Boyd and husband, Jerry, of Little Mount, SC, Teresa Goodie and husband, Dave, of Bristol, VA, Lisa Hess of Raven, Michelle Winters and husband, Mike, of Honaker; sons, Michael Hess of Manassas, Stevie Smith of Cedar Bluff, Greg Smith and wife, Donna, of Honaker, Manual Breedlove and wife, Anne, of Kentucky; sisters, Peggy Griffith of Raven, Dolly Hamblin and husband, Cecil, of Maryland, Mary Richardson and husband, David, of Swords Creek; brothers, Dallas Hess and wife, Barbara, and Jessie Hess and wife, Joanne, all of Raven; grandchildren, Keith, Jessica, Jeremy, Sara, Jamie, Jacob, Justin, Chelsea, Celestino, Makenna, and special grandchildren, Kayla and Kevin Stevenson; great grandchildren, Savannah, Emma, Alex, Jordan, and Javin; and special friends, Harold Shrader, Delmar Cox, Anne Whitt, and Tamela Carey.
The funeral was conducted Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands with the Rev. Grady McGlothlin and Rev. Otis Musick officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 conducted military graveside rites.

Winifred G. Kirtner
Winifred G. Lafon Kirtner, 84, of Falls Mills, died Sept. 13 at her home.
Born in Welch, she was the daughter of the late Dexter Lafon and Sally Daniels Lafon.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Memorial Post 9696 in Bluefield, VA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Jeff Johnson.
Survivors: husband, Robert Kirtner; son, David Kirtner and wife, Myra, of Powhatan; daughters, Linda Buckland and husband, Cecil, of Moneta, Vicki Kirtner of Falls Mills, Jody Snell of Roanoke and her late husband, Larry Snell; sister, Betty Janutolo of Bluefield, VA; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with the Rev. Raymond Amos officiating.
Entombment followed in the Grandview Mausoleum.

Charles "Hoss" Kitts, Sr.
Charles H. "Hoss" Kitts, Sr., 76, of Falls Mills Rd., Bluefield, VA, died Sept. 11 at a Bluefield hospital.
Born in Bluefield, VA, he was a son of the late Joseph M. Kitts and Blanche Hinkle Kitts.
He was retired from N&W Pocahontas Division, in Bridge and Building, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving as a MP. He served in the 720th Military Police Battalion. He was also a member of the Bluefield VFW Memorial Post 9696, the Tazewell County Historical Society, Sons of the Confederacy, AARP, honorary member of the Bluefield, VA Rescue Squad and a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance Way.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Fay England Kitts; one sister, Loretta Carter; and two brothers, John Fred Kitts and Bill S. Kitts.
Survivors: sons, Charles H. "Hoss" Kitts, Jr. and Randolph Joseph (Buddy) Kitts, both of North Tazewell, James Edward Kitts of Christiansburg; daughter, Roma Gail Kitts Ledgerwood of Bluefield, VA; son-in-law, David Ledgerwood; brother, James O. Kitts of Pounding Mill; grandchildren, Charles H. Kitts III and wife, Janet, Alexander H. Ledgerwood, Joshua A. Kitts, Kelli Nicole Kitts, Lyndsey Brooke Ledgerwood, James C. Kitts, Randi Jo Kitts and Michael Elijah Kitts; great granddaughter, Madelyn Grace Kitts; special business partner, John Broce; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends at Tazewell Co. Library and Bluefield, Va. Rescue Squad.
Graveside services were conducted Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Woodlawn Mausoleum Chapel in Bluewell, WV, with William E. "Bill" Rich officiating.
Military services were held by the Bluefield, VA VFW Memorial Post 9696.

Lillie Rose Sargent Lewis
Lillie Rose Sargent Lewis, 94, of North Tazewell, went home to be with the Lord Sept. 13.
Born Sept. 14, 1911 in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Julia Conley Sargent.
She was a faithful member of the North Tazewell Church of God of Prophecy.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ruey Lee Lewis; three daughters, Lucille Marie Davis, Margaret Sue Lewis, and Betty Jane Lewis; one son, Donald Nelson Lewis; one grandson, Dwight Davis; and several brothers and sisters. She was a blessing to everyone who knew her and will be missed by all.
Survivors: daughters, Linda McLemore and husband, Dennis, of Claypool Hill, Sylvia Turley of North Tazewell, Hattie Ruth Wilder and husband, Bige, of Maryland; sons, Alfred Lewis of North Tazewell, Wilburn Lewis and wife, Shirley, of Tazewell; 22 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and very special friends and caregivers, Linda Street and Linda Reedy.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 15 at Peery and St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Fred Mooney officiating.

William Edward (Bill) Meredith, Sr.
"A Beautiful Life"

Life’s evening sun has set for William Edward (Bill) Meredith, Sr., 77, of Richlands, and he has continued his journey with the Lord on Sept. 13 following a brief illness.
Born at Parkersburg, WV, he was the son of the late Howard Amos and Cecelia Vogel Meredith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Meredith, and one sister, Betty Jane Ball.
He was a retired supervisor with General Telephone and served in longstanding as a member and deacon at Community Heights Baptist Church. He was a member and past master of the McDowell Masonic Lodge #112 at Welch, WV; a member of the Wyndham Chapter #45 Royal Arch at Welch and a member of the Beni Kedem Shrine Temple at Charleston, WV.
Most importantly, he was known by family and friends as a loving, hard-working man committed to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Survivors: loving wife of 59 years, Norma Meredith; daughters, Cecelia Barber and husband, Dallas, of Richlands, Retta Meredith of Wardell; son, William Edward (Bill) Meredith, Jr. and wife, Dot, of Jacksonville, NC; sister, Mary Jo Stallman and husband, Delbert, of Norton, OH; grandchildren, Craig Barber, Tammy Lawson, Catherine Collins, Brennan Arney, Athena Haynes and Edward Pyles; and great grandchildren, Meredith Collins, James C. Collins, James R. Lawson, Savanna Barber, Olivia Haynes, Lydia Haynes, Matthew Lawson and Andrew Arney.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Community Heights Baptist Church at Wardell with Rev. Allen Jessee, Rev. Bill Keele and Rev. Craig Barber officiating.
Burial followed in the Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at Bluewell, WV.
Masonic rites were conducted at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at the church.

James (Jimmy) Mullins
James (Jimmy) Mullins, 69, of Whitewood, died Sept. 12 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born March 30, 1937 in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Jay and Bessie Mae Johnson Mullins.
He was a retired coal miner and was a member of UMWA. He was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Sherry Elaine Mullins and Para Mullins; one sister, Betty Mullins; and one son-in-law, Robert H. White II.
Survivors: wife of 47 years, Cora Horn Mullins; daughter, Tara Mullins White of Whitewood; granddaughter, Carrie Aleshia White of Whitewood; brothers, Thomas Mullins and wife, Alberta, Bobby Mullins and wife, Delma, and Adlai Mullins and wife, Bonnie, all of Pilgrims Knob, Jerry Mullins and wife, Joann, of Temple, TX; and sisters, Phyllis Horn of Chicago, IL, and Doris Miller and husband, Tommy, of Pounding Mill.
The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Sept. 15 at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Rev. Jimmy Cole officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Georgia Irene Osborne
Georgia Irene Osborne, 82, of Phelps, KY, formerly of Buchanan County, died Sept. 15 at Appalachian Regional Hospital at South Williamson, KY, following an extended illness.
Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late William Walker and Margaret (Mag) Arms Osborne.
She was a resident of Buchanan County for many years prior to moving to Phelps and was a member of Harman Freewill Baptist Church. She was a loving Sister, Aunt and was a Domestic Worker.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Goldie Arms, and one brother, Franklin Osborne.
Survivors: sisters, Juanita Murphy and Betty and husband, Ray Smith, all of Vansant; brothers, Donald and wife, Julie Osborne, of Roanoke, James and wife, Della Osborne, of Kingsport, TN; sister-in-law, Evelyn Osborne of Richlands; and aunts, Eva Lou Owens of Mavisdale, and Dixie Osborne of Honaker.
The funeral will be conducted Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Eddie Wilson, Minister Ronnie Sliger and Evg. Mike Rife officiating.
Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock.
Services were held at the funeral home Sept. 18 and 19 at 7 p.m.

Cora Jane Owens
Cora Jane Owens, 83, of Swords Creek, died Sept. 14 in a Richlands hospital.
Born Nov. 2, 1922 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late William Silas and Martha Caroline Dye Boyd.
A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of the Duty View Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vaughn Owens, five brothers, and five sisters. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: daughter, Deborah Owens of Richlands; son, Vaughn S. Owens, Jr. of Swords Creek; grandchildren, Anthony Vaughn Owens, Jason Alexander Owens, and Jaclyn Elizabeth Pruitt; great-granddaughter, Katlyn Owens; and a host of beloved family and friends.
The funeral was conducted at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 in the New Garden Primitive Baptist Church in Honaker with Elder Garnell Gilbert and Elder Bobby Arrington officiating.
Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Owens Cemetery in Finney.
Honaker Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

William B. Payne, IV
William Burbridge Payne, IV, 23, of Richlands, died Sept. 17 in a Norfolk hospital following a brief illness.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands.

Thomas Arthur Reynolds
Thomas Arthur Reynolds, 91, of Lebanon, TN, and formerly from Bluefield, VA, died Sept. 9 in Tennessee.
He was born in Eckman, WV, and was a son of the late Raymond Thomas Reynolds and Jennie Lawson Reynolds.
He was retired from Betsy Ross Bakery, where he was a driver for many years and was a member of the Parkview Baptist Church in Bluefield, VA, and former member of Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Virginia Brewster Reynolds, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family, which included 12 brothers and sisters.
Survivors: son, Jim Reynolds and wife, Dee, of Lebanon, TN; grandchildren, James Thomas Reynolds and wife, Deana, of Houston, TX, Debi Parsons and husband, Scott, of Venus, FL, Brian Reynolds and wife, Karen, of St. Louis, MO; great grandchildren, Gregory, Megan, Kristen, Luke, Halley, Jake and Joshua Reynolds and Joshua and Brian Parsons.
The funeral was conducted Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with Rev. Travis Hilton officiating.
Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens.

Ralph F. Richardson
Ralph Franklin Richardson, 51, of Bristol, VA, died Sept. 13 in Swords Creek.
Born April 17, 1955 in Richlands, he was a son of Sarah Richardson of Swords Creek and the late Elmer Richardson.
He had lived most of his life in the Swords Creek area and had lived in Bristol for the past seven years. He was a disabled welder and was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ernest and Jennie Richardson and his maternal grandparents, Jay and Edgar Richardson.
Additional survivors: sister, Rita Gay Reynolds and husband, Eddie, of Swords Creek; brother, Randy Michael Richardson and wife, Susan, of Lebanon; nieces, Kimberly Sexton and husband, Brian, Angela Reynolds, and Chenelle Lambert; nephews, Michael Richardson, Jerry Reynolds and Randy Damron; great-nieces, Rachel Sexton, Olivia Sexton, Raquel Damron, and Organna Damron; special great-nephew, Joseph Richardson; great-nephews, Eric Lambert and Orion Damron; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 19 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Perkins and Rev. Jim Richardson officiating.
Interment followed in the Richardson Cemetery on Horton Ridge.

Bonnie Ann Rumley
Bonnie Ann Herron Rumley, 56, of the Belfast section of Russell County, died Sept. 13 at a Kingsport, TN, hospital.
Born Oct. 26, 1949 in Yukon, WV, she was the daughter of Evangelist Clarence and Lola W. Herron of Rosedale.
She was a member of Belfast Church of Christ. She was an active member of the Senior Circle, Russell County Medical Center Chapter and received the Membership Drive Award. She was appointed President, 2005, winner of the Spirit Award, and Volunteer of the Month, Volunteer of the Year. She was also chairperson for the Scrapbook Committee and served on the clean up/set up committee, newsletter, craft, calling and food committees. She participated in numerous events and activities such as the crochet circle, walking club and Senior Health and Fitness Day. In addition, she was an active Triad member, and a member of the Prissy Ladies Red Hat Chapter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Damon Rumley; and one brother, Douglas Sawers.
Additional survivors: son, John Wesley Rumley and wife, Sue, of Richlands; step grandchildren, John Combs and Kathy Gilbert; step great grandchildren, Brittany Gilbert, Ashley Gilbert and Madison Gilbert; one brother; and two sisters.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 17 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Evangelist Dewey Mooney, Evangelist Charlie Cooper and Evangelist Lucky Bunn officiating.
Burial followed in the Ketron Memorial Cemetery at Lebanon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Belfast Church of Christ.

Genevieve N. Soos, the Chief
Genevieve N. Soos, died Sept. 13 in Bluefield Community Hospital after struggling against cancer for the past six months.
Born Genevieve Noechel in Shinnston, WV, she moved with her family to Pocahontas in 1936 where she made her home for the rest of her life.
In 1947, she married Frank M. Soos, and together with her father Henry Noechel, they bought the Pocahontas Market grocery store which they operated for 35 years.
She lived in a world of men. Chief grew up the youngest and the only girl in a family of five. Her mother died when she was 12.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Fred, Bill and Jack and is survived by her brother, Jim Noechel of Silver Spring, MD. She had two sons, Frank Jr. who lives with his wife, Margo Klass, in Fairbanks, AK and Tom who lives with his wife, Anna Rice, in Cornelius, NC.
During those years, she served her community as Cub Scout den mother, a den mother who pitched for both sides in softball games so things would be fair. She was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher. She sewed, she painted, she arranged flowers and was always busy with her hands. When she died, she left many projects yet to be finished.
In 1980, Chief began a second career with the Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens as a site manager in Pocahontas. Over the remaining years, she served as a site manager in Pocahontas and Tazewell. For many years, she served as an Outreach Worker, driving every road in Tazewell County – usually along with her husband, Frank, after he retied from the store.
After Frank Sr. died in 1997, Chief continued to find meaning and joy in her work. She expressed two desires: to live in her home in Pocahontas to the end of her days and to do her work as long as she was able. She realized these goals.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sept. 18 at the First Methodist Church in Pocahontas.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Pocahontas or the Emma Yates Library of Pocahontas.

Ezra Crawford Baldwin
Ezra Crawford Baldwin, 69, of Council, died Sept. 22 at his home.
Born Nov. 9, 1936 in Drill, he was a son of the late Henry and Kathleen Ball Baldwin.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was a member of Trinity Freewill Baptist Church. He was a disabled coal miner and a United States Army veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Baldwin and Winfred Baldwin, and one sister, Estelle Horn.
Survivors: wife of 33 years, Fonnie Baldwin; son, Timothy Baldwin and two granddaughters, Michelle Baldwin and Nikki Baldwin, all of the home; sisters, Ruby Mitchell of Council, Bertie Lester of Drill, Hazel Musick of Lebanon, Ethel Lee of Galion, OH, Delphia Hubbard of Shelby, OH; special friends, Duke Street and Grover Lambert; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 24 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson and Rev. Kyle Ratliff officiating.
Interment followed in the Baldwin Cemetery at Drill.

Peggy Faye Lewis Boyd
Peggy Faye Lewis Boyd, 67, of Mavisdale, went home to be with the Lord Sept. 22 at her home following a long courageous battle with cancer.
Born Sept. 9, 1939, in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of Eva Lou Armes Lewis Owens of Mavisdale and the late George Lewis.
She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Little Prater Church of Christ and attended Garden Creek Church of Christ. She attended Longwood College and was a retired employee of Buchanan County School System having worked at Vansant School as secretary for 34-years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joel Albert Boyd, Jr., March 15, 2006; and one great-grandchild, Kloyie Madison Boyd.
Survivors: daughter, Elizabeth and husband, Donnie Yates, of Mavisdale; son, Joel Albert III and wife, Sheryl Boyd, of Mavisdale; sister, Shirley and husband, Clarence Bartlett, Jr., of Hillsville; grandchildren, Hollie Yates, Clay Yates and Jeremy and wife, Leslee Boyd; and step-great-grandchild, Alex Hubbert.
The funeral was conducted Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Michael Trent, Rusty Owens and Wayne Cline officiating.
Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
A song service was held at 7 p.m. Sept. 23 and an evening service was held at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the funeral home.

Arnold Lee Dickens, Sr.
Arnold Lee Dickens, Sr., 71, of Thompson Valley, was called home to be with the Lord Sept. 19 at his home after a battle with cancer.
Born March 3, 1935 in Montcalm, WV, he was a son of the late Hillary Nathan Dickens and Sarah Simpkins Dickens.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Chapel. He loved his church and his pastors, Chuck Trent and Jeff Stacy. He was a member of the Tazewell County Back Porch Pickers for several years and loved his music.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Velvie Woolwine, Beulah Roberts, Sarah Angelides, and Dovie Bailey, and four brothers, Guy Dickens, John Dickens, Thurman Dickens and Dan Dickens.
Survivors: wife of 47 years, Earnestine Asbury Dickens; sons, Arnold Lee Dickens, Jr. of Baltimore, MD, Carl Newton Dickens of Thompson Valley; daughter, Sara J. Frye and husband, John, of Bluefield, WV; granddaughters, Ashley Ward and husband, Doug, of Orlando, FL, Deeanna Dickens of Mt. Airy, NC; grandsons, Paul Dickens and Joshua Dickens, both of Thompson Valley; brother, Robert Dickens of Baltimore; and sister, Hazel Dickens of Washington, DC.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Sept. 21 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Dr. Chuck Trent and Pastor Jeff Stacy officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Ann Wilson Garrett
Ann Wilson Garrett, 73, of Clarksburg, WV and Maisons-sur-Mer of Myrtle Beach, SC, died at 11:20 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Conway Medical Center, Conway, SC (Myrtle Beach) following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.
Born in Clarksburg, she was a daughter of the late Louis Heazelton Wilson and Elinor Elizabeth (Jackie) Hornor Wilson, both Harrison County, WV natives.
She was a graduate of Washington Irving High School in Clarksburg. She was a devoted wife and mother, a very artistic lady with style and flair for entertaining and decorating. She loved her family, her Scotch-Irish heritage and her Lord. She was a lifelong active member of First Presbyterian Church in Clarksburg, where she was an active participant in Bible study, fellowship, community service and many other worthy projects. She served as an Elder and Deacon of the church and was a member of the Adult Chancel Choir. She was actively involved as an officer and member of the Presbyterian Women, Circle # 1, Lenten Luncheons, Cookbook Committee and Presbyfriends. She was a supporter and participant in the Presbyterian Church Youth Club at Clarksburg and at the time of her death, attended First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach, SC.
She was a member of the Goff Plaza Garden Club and the Clarksburg League for Service, where she volunteered many hours to the Mothers and Babies Clinic and the club’s annual fundraiser, the Holly Ball. She enjoyed membership in several bridge clubs in Clarksburg and Myrtle Beach, and was a lifelong member of the Clarksburg Country Club.
She was an avid West Virginia University Mountaineer fan and supporter. She was a former vice-president and board member of the Clarksburg Casket Company in Clarksburg, which her grandfather, Frank Lusk Wilson, founded in 1906. She was previously on the board of directors of the Lumberport-Shinnston Gas Company which her grandfather, Vance L. Hornor and great uncle Hood Hornor founded in the early 1900's.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Ross Wilson Babcock, and one brother-in-law, William Charles Garrett.
Survivors: husband, of 41 years, Marquis Earl "Mark" Garrett, Sr., whom she married Dec. 27, 1964; nine children and spouses, Katherine Ann Garrett Kiger and husband, Mike, Huntington, WV, Jeffrey Wilson Garrett, Sr., and wife, Sue, Elinor Elizabeth Garrett, and Karen Lynn Garrett Mazza and husband, Albert, all of Mooresville, NC, Janet Elise Garrett Babcock and husband, Tim, Huntersville, NC, Marquis Earl "Mark" Garrett, Jr., Clarksburg, Douglas Heazelton Garrett and wife, Jaime, Fairmont, WV, Amy Starling Garrett, Mooresville, NC, Amanda Wilson Garrett, Myrtle Beach, SC and Clarksburg; grandchildren, Jeffrey Wilson "Jay" Garrett, II, Lindsey McConnell Garrett, Sara Elise Babcock, Jordan Douglas Garrett, Carmen Leeann Babcock, and Trey Herschel Mazza; sister, Sara Wilson Bennett and husband, H. B. "Buck", Scottsdale, AZ; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Thomas Wayne Garrett and wife, Lois, Fairmont, WV; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends called at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home in Clarksburg Sept. 22.
The funeral was conducted Sept. 23 at 12 noon at the First Presbyterian Church in Clarksburg with the Rev. Dr. Eric M. Faust presiding.
Interment was in Bridgeport Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held at Maisons-sur-Mer, 9650 Shore Drive, Myrtle Beach, SC at a later date.

Dora Marie Hankins
Dora Marie Hankins, 90, of North Tazewell, went to be with the Lord Sept. 24 at a Tazewell hospital following a brief illness.
She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
She was born in Tazewell County, and was the daughter of the late Ryntha and Vicie Beavers Sparks.
She had made her home in Tazewell County all her life. She was a very loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend. She was cherished and will be greatly missed by her loved ones and her many friends. She was a member and along with her husband one of the founders of Yost Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. She was also a Willing Worker of the Church, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.
She was the widow of Rev. Nathan Elmer Hankins.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary E. Hankins and by 10 brothers and sisters.
Those who remain to carry on her spirit are: daughters, Helen Smith and husband, Gerald, of Dallas, TX, Linda Shelton and husband, Tommy, of North Tazewell, Betty Jones and husband, Reese, of North Tazewell; sons, Tommy E. Hankins and wife, Carol, and Jimmy N. Hankins and wife, Judy, all of North Tazewell; grandchildren, Pam Fiveash and husband, John, Sheri Smith, Tina Rollins and husband, Ray, Darren Hankins, Kim Hankins, Wayne Hayes, Jr., Daphne Boutin and husband, John, Heather Asbury, Louren Shelton, and Jessika Jones; great grandchildren, Keyfer Fiveash, Payton Fiveash, Cameron Hayes, Brianne McReynolds, Nathan Boutin, Abby Asbury and Emma Asbury; sister, Hazel Hickman of Richlands; brother, Joe Sparks and wife, Ola Mae, of Cedar Bluff; special nieces, Shirley Susman and Nancy Wallace; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The funeral will be conducted Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel of Tazewell with the Rev. Ed Hankins and Rev. Ralph Bostic officiating.
Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.
In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the American Heart Association, Mid-Atlantic Affiliate, Memorials and Tributes Processing Center, PO Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.
Hurst-Scott Funeral Home of Tazewell is in charge of arrangements.
