Joseph E. Byrd
Joseph Edward Byrd, 90, of Roanoke, formerly of Red Ash, died Oct. 11 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Red Ash, he was a son of the late Berry Newton and Margaret Magalene Smith Byrd, both Fork Ridge natives.
He had made his home in the Roanoke area since 1966 and attended the Victory Praise Fellowship in Bedford County.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Doris Murphy, five sisters, and three brothers.
Survivors: wife, Nancy Ann Byrd; daughter, Connie Vandyke of Detroit, MI; sons, Bueford Byrd and Kennith Byrd, both of Baltimore, MD, Samuel Byrd of Evansville, IN, Robert Byrd, Elmer Byrd, Delmer Byrd and Leslie Byrd, all of Roanoke; 26 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Kenny Miller and Rev. Clarence Brown officiating.
Interment followed in the Ball Family Cemetery on Road Ridge near Raven.

Hank Cole
Hank Cole, 57, of Whitewood, died Oct. 11 at his home following a long illness.
Born at Whitewood, he was the son of the late Fulton G. Cole and Madge Jewell Cole.
He was an equipment operator with Mac Construction Company at Oakwood.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one foster sister, Pearl Cole.
Survivors: his significant other, Joan Endicott of Whitewood; daughters, Abigail Vile of Fort Lewis, WA, Amy Morici of Jacksonville, FL, Adria Kilbreath of Lake City, FL, Amanda Cole of Christiansburg; brother, L.R. Cole of Whitewood; and six grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. in the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Rev. Jimmy Cole officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill.

Ellen M. Compton
Ellen Musick Compton, 89, of Honaker, went to be with the Lord Oct. 6 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Grundy.
Born in Honaker, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Eliza Dye Musick.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Compton, Sr.; two daughters, June Harris and Marie Willis; and one grandson, David Compton. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: sons, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Compton, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Compton and Sherman Compton, all of Richmond, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Compton and Carl Compton, all of Honaker; stepdaughters, Irene Scott of Norfolk, Lola Pearl Danza of North Carolina; sons-in-law, Leroy Willis of Richmond, Talbert Harris of Honaker; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Giles Wilson and Rev. Virgil Musick officiating.
Interment followed in the Meade Cemetery at Honaker.

Eugene "Boots" Cordle
Eugene Franklin "Boots" Cordle, 76, of Charleston, WV, formerly of the Raven area, died at a Charleston hospital Oct. 8.
Born in Richlands, he was the son of the late Dave and Myrtle Cordle, both of the Raven area.
He had made his home in Crosslanes, WV, for the last 12 years. He was a U.S. Army and Korean War Veteran and a disabled coal miner.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three grandchildren, one stepson, one sister and one half-brother.
Survivors: wife, Barbara Cordle; daughters, Rose Smith of Minominee, MI, Lillie Meadows of Sugar Grove, Sharon Blanton of Tailors, SC, Mary Lawson of Abingdon, April Lowe of Greer, SC; sons, Thomas Cordle and Donald Cordle, both of Greer; stepsons, Donald Allen Stephens of Cleveland, OH, John Stephens and Adam Stephens, both of Charleston; stepdaughter, Brenda Kessinger of Charleston; 14 grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one half-sister; and one half-brother.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Jerry Welch officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Dorothy Davis
Dorothy Davis, 75, of Mt. Juliet, TN, entered God’s eternal kingdom on Oct. 6.
She was a loving and faithful wife, mother and disciple, who served her Lord, her family and her friends with her singing voice, her arts and crafts, her acts of kindness and her spirit of adventure.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Rev. Floyd C. Davis, a former pastor of First United Methodist Church in Bluefield, VA; and one daughter of Cathy Davis Hardin.
Survivors: her remaining children, Rev. Mark C. Davis and wife, Jean, of Chattanooga, TN, Cynthia (Cindy) Reasor and husband, Jack, of Richmond, Carol Hearn and husband, Chip, of Mt. Juliet, John Davis of Lebanon, TN; sisters, Hazel Elwell of Milford, CT, Ruth Leach of Danbury, CT, Jean Clark and husband, Howard, of Trumbull, CT, Gladys Nastu of Milford; grandchildren, Michelle McNally and husband, Chris, of Tyngsboro, MA, Julia Costanza and husband, Corey, of Sonora, CA, Joshua Davis of Murfreesboro, TN, Annie Wengler and husband, Tom, of Chattanooga, Megan Reasor of Norfolk, Bryan Reasor of Richmond, Darci Davis of Lebanon, TN; great-grandchild, Allie Lord of Chattanooga; and several nephews and nieces.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 9 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Bluefield, VA, with the Rev. Hugh Kilgore and Dr. Donald Scott officiating.
A graveside service followed at Hidden Valley Cemetery, Little Creek, near Davis Chapel United Methodist Church.

Annie Marie Dillard
Annie Marie Williams Dillard, 79, of Tazewell, died Oct. 10 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born in Tazewell, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Lena Jones Williams.
She was raised by her paternal grandparents, the late Charles and Jeannie Johnson Williams.
She had lived most of her life in Tazewell, with the exception of a few years that she resided in Bluefield, WV. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Tazewell, where she served as treasurer and as a member of the choir. She was a former employee of Tazewell Community Hospital.
In addition to her parents and paternal grandparents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert Dillard; maternal grandparents, Charles and Carolina Smith Jones; one brother, John G. Williams; one sister, Jo R. Williams; and several aunts and uncles.
Survivors: sister, Ida Williams of Dayton, OH; niece, Hazel W. Davis of Columbus, OH; a dedicated and caring cousin, William E. Cecil Sr. of Tazewell; and several other cousins and friends.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Dr. Carolyn Browning and Dr. Janice Harris officiating.
Burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell.

Hazel M. Elkins
Hazel Madeline Owens Elkins, 75, of Richlands, died Oct. 11 in Baltimore, MD, following a long illness.
Born in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late John and Bertha Lou Boyd Owens.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred Elkins; one brother, William Lee Owens; and two sisters, Carrie Rimmer and Elzia Whitt.
Survivors: sons, Gerald Elkins and wife, Amy, of Baltimore, Wayne Elkins and wife, Gale, of Salinas, CA; daughter, Patricia Elmos and husband, Peter, of Baltimore; sisters, Mazie Boyd of Honaker, Gladys Noel and husband, Aldolphus, of Swords Creek; brother, Glen Owens and wife, Greta, of Swords Creek; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many, many loving relatives and friends.
The funeral will be conducted Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Elders Ronnie Beavers and Willard Owens officiating.

Powell S. "Bud" Elswick, Jr.
Powell S. "Bud" Elswick, Jr., 83, of Richlands, died Oct. 10 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Powell S. and Emma Dawson Elswick, Sr.
He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area and was a retired painter. Bud’s love of beautiful flowers that he planted and cared for brought smiles to the many friends he shared his creations with.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie French Elswick.
Survivors: sister, Jean Curtis of Newport News; brother, Ronald K. Elswick and wife, Ann, of Radford; special cousins, Pansy Cole, Sonny Elswick, and John McClintock; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Belle (Maw) Fowler
Mary Belle (Maw) Fowler, 97, of Squire, WV, died Oct. 8 at Gary, WV.
Born at Thorpe, WV, she was a daughter of the late Matthew Albert and Emma Blowfield Allison.
She had made her home at Squire her entire life. She was a loving housewife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She was a member of the Advent Christian Church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was the widow of Thomas Gordon Fowler Sr. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by six sisters and three brothers.

Claudia Sarah Hankins, 92, of the Earls Branch Road section of Cedar Bluff, died Oct. 13 at the home of her daughter, Betty Richardson, following a lengthy illness.

Larry D. Hankins
Larry Dale Hankins, 71, of Huntingtown, MD, formerly of Tazewell, died Oct. 8 at Millennium Health and Rehabilitation at South River, Edgewater, MD.
Survivors: wife, Lenora E. Beavers Hankins; daughter, Lydia Kay Hankins Goulart of Owings, MD; son-in-law, Francis "Buddy" Hankins of Owings; grandchildren, Francis "Joey" Goulart, Elizabeth Goulart and William "Willy" Goulart, all of Owings; and mother, Myrtle Louise Worley, of Edgewater, formerly of Tazewell.
The funeral will be conducted Oct. 15 at 10 a.m. at Rausch Funeral Home in Owings with Reverend Robert Wagner officiating.

Annie R. Hess, 64, of Rosedale, died Oct. 12 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Swords Creek, she was a daughter of the late Hobert and Tina Hess and a lifelong resident of the area.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Hess, and one sister, Nora Mae Dye.
Survivors: brothers, Billy Hess and Winston Hess, both of Swords Creek, Bobby Hess and Jimmy Hess, both of Honaker; sisters, Peggy Perkins, Shirley Hess and Ruby Dye, all of Swords Creek, Sue Hess of Blackford, Shelby Lowe of Burlington, NC, Geraldine Hess of Newberry, SC; and several nieces nephews.

Maynard J. Little
Maynard John Little, 75, of the Baptist Valley section of North Tazewell, died Oct. 10 at a Tazewell hospital.
Born at Fargo, WV, he was the son of the late Ambrose and Dora Roop Little.
He had made his home in Baptist Valley for 11 years. He was retired from General Motors and was a member of the United Auto Workers Local Union 1776. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Little.

Claude K. Rasnake
Claude Kenneth Rasnake, 60, of Bee, died Oct. 6 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Pierce and Carrie Elizabeth Barton Rasnake.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was a disabled coal miner, having been employed by Clinchfield Coal Company. He was a member of the UMWA and attended the Dante Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Thurman Rasnake, and several half-brothers and half-sisters.

Beatrice S. Rone
Beatrice Sharp Rone, 86, of Pennington Gap, formerly of Richlands, died Oct. 9 at a Pennington Gap hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Mt. Pleasant, TN, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Pearl Cox Sharp, both Columbia, TN natives.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Richlands Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Levi Rone, two sisters, and one brother.
Survivors: daughters, Sandra Manning and husband, Renfro, of Charlottesville, Beverly Elkins and husband, Omer, of Jonesville; sister, Mrs. Sam (Gladys) Napier of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren, Donna, Diane, Denise, Stephanie, Tracy, and Clark; and great-grandchildren, Corey, Connor, Parker, Jordan, Todd, Aidan, and Joey.
Graveside services were conducted Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill with Rev. Bill McDaniel officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens.

George "Bill" Shelton
George William "Bill" Shelton, 73, of Bellville, OH, died Oct. 11 in his home following a short illness.
Born in Red Ash, he was the son of George Washington and Mabel Exie Proffitt Shelton.
He moved to the Mansfield area in 1950. An Air Force veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of Irvin Hiskey Post #535 American Legion, Bellville, and the Bellville Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He had worked 34 years as a millwright with the Ohio Brass Company in Mansfield, retiring in 1979. He was an avid citizens band radio operator, and had attended the Stiving Road Freewill Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Otis and Walter Shelton, and two sisters Hazel Keen and Phyllis Lester.
Survivors: wife, Lela R. Tate Shelton, whom he married December 26, 1951; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. and Ginger Shelton of Bellville; grandchildren, Jeanie and husband, Dwayne Brown, and Eric Shelton, all of Rocky Point, NC; great-granddaughter, Mary Catherine Brown; brothers and a sister-in-law, Herman and Valerie Shelton of Mansfield, Cecil Shelton of Garden Creek; sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Roscoe VanDyke of Doran; sisters-in-law, Dixie Shelton and Erma Shelton, both of Johnsville; brothers-in-law, McKinley Keen of Mansfield, Robert Lester of Baptist Valley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home with The Rev. Harold Nickell officiating.
Burial followed in Bellville Cemetery, where American Legion Post #535 held military graveside honors.

Corrine F. Smith
Corrine Ferrell Smith, 70, of Spencer, died Oct. 12 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late Keith and Myrtle C. Gillespie Ferrell, both Russell County natives.
She had made her home in South Carolina most of her life prior to moving to the Spencer area five years ago. She was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal Faith.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: husband, Jerry Lee Smith; daughters, Myrtle Ann Monk and husband, Wayne, of Swords Creek, Dottie Owens of Ridgeway; sons, Mike Jackson and wife, Linda, of Swords Creek, Dennis Jackson and friend, Kay Burton, of Clauddille; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. at the Raven Assembly of God Church in Raven with the Pastor Barry Absher and Phyllis Simmons officiating.
Interment will follow at the Ferrell Family Cemetery on Long Branch near Raven.

Bennie Curtis Steele
Bennie Curtis Steele, 62, of Richlands, died Oct. 8 at his home following a long illness.
Born in Kentucky, he was the son of the late Curtis and Roxie Sloane Steele.
He was a hair designer.
Survivors: his life partner, John McCracken (aka) Johnny Mack of Richlands; daughters, Adria Steele and Shawn Monell, both of Topeka, KS, Tamera Foster of New Jersey; son, Bennie Steele, Jr. of North Carolina; brothers, Robert Steele of Pin Hill, KY, Randy Steele of Roanoke; sisters, Julia Evans and Wanda Hashemzadeh, both of German Town, MD; special caregiver, Emmitt (Buck) Sergant of Richlands; special friend, Jimmy Ray Summers of Richlands; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Disposition will be private.

Hartsell "J. C." Strouth
Hartsell "J. C." Strouth, 70, of Cedar Bluff, died October 10 at a Bristol, TN, hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Russell County, he was a son of the late Hassell Strouth and Mary Gross Strouth Goodie, both Tazewell County natives.
He was a lifelong resident of the Cedar Bluff area, was a former coal miner and was of the Holiness Faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Patty Hale, and one half-brother, Bradley Strouth.
Survivors: wife, Frances Marie Helton Strouth; daughters, Remona Dales and husband, Greg, of Cedar Bluff, Carolyn Vance of Doran; son, David Wayne Yates of Rosedale; sisters, Mildred "Sis" McCowan of Doran, Priscilla "Shell" McGlothlin and husband, Stanley, of Raven; brother, David Goodie and wife, Teresa, of Bristol, VA; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Connie A. Vandyke
Connie Addison Vandyke, 57, of Statesville, NC, died Oct. 5 in Charlotte, NC, unexpectedly following a brief illness.
Born in Richlands, she was the daughter of Douglas W. Lawson of Richlands and the late Margaret Melda Blanton Lawson.
She graduated from Richlands High School and was the General Manager of Hillcrest Construction. She was a longtime resident of Statesville and a member of Troutman Church of God.
Additional survivors: husband, James E. Vandyke; daughters, Tracy A. Blevins of Charlotte, NC, Cindy A. Strange of Laurens, SC; sisters, Belinda S. Vandyke of Troutman, Mellissa K. Worrell of Hillsville; brother, Jeffery W. Lawson of Richlands; grandson, Ethan A. Bevins of Charlotte; stepdaughter, Brandy M. Vandyke of Statesville; and stepson, Adam McAlfresh of Statesville.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. at Troutman Church of God with the Rev. Conner Lambert officiating.
Interment followed at Iredell Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Sylvester R. Wilson
Sylvester R. Wilson, 82, of Richlands, died Oct. 12 at a Tazewell hospital.
Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late John L. and Dillia Addison Wilson, both Richlands natives.
He had made his home in the Richlands area most of his life and was a former employee of General Shale. He was a World War II U. S. Army Veteran serving as Sergeant in the 330th Infantry.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Della Lester Wilson; three sisters, Nanny Belle Wilson, Gladys Wilson and Jennie Moore; and three brothers, James M. Wilson, Kelly S. Wilson and Henry D. Wilson. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors: nieces, Peggy Addison of Richlands, Patsy Allison of Kingsport, TN; several great nieces and nephews; friends and neighbors; and employees of Tazewell Community Hospital and 3rd Station Nurses at Heritage Hall Nursing Home.
Graveside services will be conducted Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill with Rev. Darrell Sutherland officiating.
Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens.
Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands is in charge of arrangements.

Gracie N. Winningham
Gracie Neel Winningham, 79, of North Tazewell, went to be with Jesus Oct. 12.
Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Bill and Nannie Bell Harman Neel.
She attended the Tazewell First Assembly of God Church. She was a very active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 331 of Bishop.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Clustia (Bonny Blue) Winningham; two brothers, Henry Neel and Jasper Neel; two sisters, Rose Harless, Claire Belle Sutton and her husband, Paul; and one nephew, Kenneth Ray Neel.
Survivors: daughters, Gail Sparks of Cleveland, OH, Pat Williams and husband, George, of North Tazewell; sons, James Winningham and wife, Ellen, and Leon Winningham and wife, Sharon, all of Martinsville; sister, Mary Bailey and husband, H.A., of Decatur, GA; sisters-in-law, Garnetta Neel of North Tazewell, Doris Neel of Radford; special niece, Thelma Matney and husband, Lawrence, of North Tazewell; special nephew, Billy Neel of Chester; and special caregivers, Tazewell Home Health and Dr. Anthony Peraltha. She was a loving grandmother, great grandmother, and great, great grandmother of fifty six and aunt to many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted today at 11 a.m. at the Tazewell First Assembly of God Church in Tazewell, with the Rev. Doug Johnson officiating.
Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
The family received friends at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell Oct. 14 and will receive friends Oct. 15 one hour prior to the service at the church.
