Services were held this afternoon for retired hi-lo driver Charles H. Minton, 82, of Monroe, who died at 6:08 p.m. Monday at Mercy Memorial Hospital emergency room.
The Rev. Randy Pierce officiated. Burial was in Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle. Rupp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Surviving are his wife; four daughters, Mrs. Lewis (Barbara) Russell, Mrs. Eddie (Gwenda) Pierce, Mrs. Robert (Blauma) Langford and Mrs. Darrell (Karen) Bezeau, all of Monroe; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.

Retired Ida Public Schools teacher Nadine Dennis, 74, of Monroe died at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday at Mercy Memorial Hospital. She had been ill for three years.

There will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle. The Rev. Todd Petty, pastor of Point Place United Church of Christ, will officiate. Jasin Funeral Home, Toledo, was in charge of arrangements.
Surviving is a foster brother, George Lajiness of Monroe.

LASALLE - Shirley E. Labadie, 67, of LaSalle, a former bus driver for Monroe Public Schools for 13 years, died at 1:41 p.m. Friday in Mercy Memorial Hospital, Monroe, following a lengthy illness. She was seriously ill for nine days.
Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Allore Funeral Home, Monroe. She will lie in state Monday from 1 p.m. until services at 2 in the First Presbyterian Church with the Reverends Dean and Ellen McGormley, co-pastors, officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.
She is survived by one son, Scott (Dorothy) of LaSalle and two grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Mark, in 1966.

Laura V. Lewis, 83, of Monroe and formerly of Temperance, died of natural causes at 10:41 p.m. Thursday in the Frenchtown Nursing Care Center. She had been in poor health since October, 1991.
Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Farnham Funeral Home, Temperance, where services will be at 11 a.m. Monday. Pastor Kenneth Steffes from the Luna Pier Baptist Church will officiate and burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Tanya Balhorn of Erie; one brother, Fred Shires Jr. of Circleville, Ohio; two sisters, Helen Davis of Columbus, Ohio, and Dorothy Berry of Florida; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Hartman II; two sisters and two great-grandchildren.

The poor and destitute of Monroe County have lost a dear friend.
Debbie G. Zmijewski, director of the United Way's First Call for Help who helped "thousands" of low-income and homeless people for the past 13 years, died Thursday afternoon in her Toledo home after a long battle with cancer.
She was 46.
Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday in the David R. Jasin Funeral Home, 5300 Summit St., Point Place, Ohio, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Gary L. Rader officiating. A private burial is planned.
Born June 3, 1954, in Erie, she was the daughter of James and Mary Berry and formerly lived in Temperance. She married Daniel Zmijewski.
In addition to her husband of Toledo and her parents of Erie, she is survived by one son, Dennis Stark of Toledo; one daughter, Jamie (Jerry) Polland of Monroe; one stepson, Brian Zmijewski of Germany; three stepdaughters, Lea (Scott) McIntire of Toledo; Ginger (Izzy) Boone of Middletown, Ohio, and Misty (Tim) Zmijewski; three sisters, Kathy (Jim Lucas) Yoakum, Linda (Steve) Vaughn and Pam (Mike) Blankenship, and seven grandchildren.

SOMERSET - John P. Flaws, 66, of Somerset, a former Monroe resident and the father of Mrs. Robert (Cynthia) Goethals of Monroe, died at 12:55 a.m. Saturday in his home following a lengthy illness.
There will be no visitation. His body will be donated to the University of Michigan Medical School. A memorial service will be held later at St. Rita Catholic Church in Clark Lake. The Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison is in charge of arrangements.
In addition to his wife at home and his daughter of Monroe, he is survived by three sons, John of Bradenton, Fla.; Dennis of Toledo and Bryan of Somerset; four daughters, Joan (Greg) David of Knoxville, Tenn.; Bonnie (Sam) Moore of Howe, Ind.; Ann of LaGrange, Ind., and Karyn of Somerset; three brothers, James of Rialto, Calif.; Robert of Frostproof, Fla., and Gerald of Canton; two sisters, Barbara (Thomas) Jordon of Kettering, Ohio, and Estelle (Robert) Whaley of Flushing; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Earl.

Howard Thoma
Howard V. Thoma, 79, a Navy veteran and one of the area's last survivors of the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 and a 38-year employee of Consumers Energy's J.R. Whiting Plant in Luna Pier, died at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday at Mercy Memorial Hospital, where he had been for five days. Prior to that, he had lived at the Lutheran Home for one year.
There will be no visitation and cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church, Monroe, of which he was a member. Reverends Dean and Ellen McGormley, co-pastors, will officiate. Burial of his remains will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle. Members of Monroe Post 1138, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Color Guard, will officiate.
