George A. Deringer
Died: Friday, July 5, 2002
George A. Deringer, 79, Ada, died Friday, July 5, 2002 at Lost Creek Care Center, Lima.
He was born Dec. 16, 1922 in Ada to Ora and Ada Belle (Cantrell) Deringer.
On Dec. 22, 1950 he married Dorothy J. Moore and she died on March 5, 1982.
Survivors include two daughters: Diana J. (Howard) Hastings, of Ada; and Brenda D. (Scott) Burns of Cridersville; two brothers: Russell (Gayle) Deringer of Billings, Montana; and Glenn Deringer of Bluffton.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Audren Deringer and John Deringer and one sister, Jean Miller.
He retired after 35 years from Superior Coach, Shellar Globe Division as a painter. He was a member of the Ada American Legion Post #185, a member of the Ada VFW Post #9381 and a member of the Ohio Farm Bureau. He was a former co-owner with his brother, John deringer, of the Ada Airport.
Services were held Wednesday, July 10 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, with Pastor Thomas Dearth officiating. Burial was in McElroy Cemetery, Ada.

Reed (Joe) Gossard
Died: Friday, July 5, 2002
Reed (Joe) Gossard, 78, Ada, died Friday, July 5, 2002 at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.
He was born April 14, 1924 in Hardin County to Artie and Olevia (Johnson) Gossard.
On July 2, 1945, he married Lucille Dysert and she survives in Ada.
Other survivors include Gary Gossard, of Lima; three daughters: Joyce (Terry) Bowsher of Lima; Deb East of Ada; and Lynette (Brad) Musselman of Ada; one brother, Dan Gossard of Willow Springs, Mo.; three sisters: Mabel Gossard of Salem, Ala.; Jean Brenneman of Waynesfield; Ruth McPheron of Bluffton; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters: Retha Staup, Ruby Long and Ruah Conrad; three brothers: Ralph Gossard, Ray Gossard and Billy Gossard.
He retired from Textron (formerly Ex-Cello) in Lima in 1986 after 30 years are a machinist. He was also a farmer. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II, a life member of the Ada VFW Post #9381 and a member of the Ada American Legion Post #185. He was a member of the USS Birmingham Reunion for several years.
Services were Wednesday July 10 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, with Pastor Don Hardman officiating. Burial was in Preston Cemetery, Alger.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association and/or Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Charles P. (Chuck) Ballinger
Died: Thursday, July 4, 2002
Charles P. (Chuck) Ballinger, 72, of Liburn, GA., passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2002.
He was born in Allen County to Paul and Margaret (Rhodes) Ballinger.
Survivors include his wife, Avonelle Ballinger of Lilburn, GA.; one brother, Roger Ballinger of Tucson, AZ.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a retired Regional Service Manager for Massey Ferguson, Inc. and a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Herbert Ballinger.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2002 at Wages and Sons Gwinnett Chapel. Rev. Lester Walters will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Embracing Hospice, 2160 Fountain Drive, Snellville, GA. 30078.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. the day of the service at Wages and Sons Gwinnett Chapel, 1031 Lawrenceville Hwy., Lawrenceville, GA. (770-277-4550).

Charles S. Umphress
Died: Wednesday, July 3, 2002
Charles S. Umphress, 76, of Ada, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.
He was born August 22, 1925 in Ada, to George and Lucille (Epley) Umphress.
On June 8, 1946, he married Hazel C. Morrison, who survives in Ada.
Other survivors include a son, Duane Umphress of Hilliard; two daughters: Victoria (Dennis) Midlam of Marion and Cheryl (Howard) Ward of Brockport, NY; three brothers: Maurice (Janice) Umphress of Ada, Lowell (Janet) Umphress of Ashby, Mass., and Howard (Helen) Umphress of Ada; a sister, Joyce (Richard) Klatte of Lewis Center, OH; and six grandchildren.
Mr. Umphress was formerly owner and operator of a Standard Oil Distributorship in the Ada area. He also formerly operated Umphress Refuse Service of Ada, and he owned and operated a Maintenance and Repair Service in Ada. He was also a cabinet maker and furniture maker.
Mr. Umphress was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and WWII. He was a member of the Ada Church of Christ (Disciples). He was a member and Past Master of the Ada Masonic Lodge #344 F & AM. He was a past member of the Ada-Liberty Volunteer Fire Department and served as Chief for several years. He was a member of the Ada Lions Club for several years and was a member of the Ada VFW Post 9381.
Services were held on Saturday, July 6 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, with Minister Harrison Underwood and Pastor Steven Umphress officiating.
Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada. Graveside military rites were conducted by the Ada VFW Post 9381.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ada-Liberty Volunteer Fire Department, the Ada VFW Post 9381 and/or the American Lung Association.

Robert A. Dickmeyer
Died: Tuesday, June 25, 2002
Former Ada resident Robert A. Dickmeyer, 79, died June 25 in Woodville, Tx. Bob was a 1940 graduate of Ada High School and attended Ohio Northern University. He graduated from Purdue University.
He was married to Janice Ann John who preceded him in death in 1976.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corps WWII pilot in the 8th Air Force, 4th Fighter Group and Leader of Squadron 334 where he attained the rank of Captain. Bob later owned and operated "The Glove Company" of Houston, Tx.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Dickmeyer, daughter Sharon (John) Passmore; sons John and Mark Dickmeyer; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Vernon Wilcox
Died: Thursday, June 6, 2002
Vernon Wilcox, 68, of Alger, died Thursday, June 6, 2002 at Lima Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 29, 1934 in Floyd County, Kentucky to Oakie and Erma (Horne) Wilcox.
On April 13, 1957 he married Shirley L. Carmean who survives in Alger.
Other survivors include two sons, Doug (Marcia) Wilcox of Waynesfield and Jack ((Jane) Wilcox of Alger; one daughter, Connie Kindle of Alger; one sister Reni Guyton of Ada; one brother, Tom Wilcox of Prestonsburg, Ky.; one granddaughter, Jennifer Wilcox; and six grandsons, Billy Kindle, Doug Wilcox, Jason Wilcox, Adam Kindle, Christopher Kindle, Bobby (Kim) Mika and one great-granddaughter, Stevie Mika.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Joseph Wilcox and three sisters, Billie Wilcox, Etta Whitaker and Jean Greer and one brother, Woodrow Wilcox.
He was a truck driver for BOC Gases (Airco Industrial Gases) of Lima. He retired after 30 years.
Services were held Saturday, June 8 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Alger with the Reverend James Holbrook officiating.
Burial was in Preston Cemetery, Alger.

Donald G. Brown
Died: Wednesday, June 5, 2002
Donald G. Brown, 67, of Lafayette, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at his residence in Harrod.
He was born June 22, 1934 in Lima to Edward and Theresia (Brockert) Brown.
On June 6, 1953 he married M. Corrine Bassitt and she survives in Lafayette.
Also surviving are two sons: Donald E. (Karen) Brown of Bluffton and Kenneth Brown of Alger; three daughters: Cathy (Jeff) Augsburger of Lima; Karen (Jr.) Newman of Kenton; and Cynthia Watkins of Kenton; three sisters: Alicia Thompson of Cridersville; Teresa (Richard) Cotrell of Lima; and Helen Morris of Leipsic; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters: Agnes Hughes and Mary Thompson; four brothers, Clarence, Bernard, Edward and Leonard; one son, Timothy Wayne Brown and one great-grandson.
He was a welder at Kenton Structural & Ornamental Iron Works of Kenton, where he retired after 23 years.
Services were held Saturday, June 8 at the Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, with Pastor David Thompson officiating.
Burial was at Lafayette Cemetery, Lafayette.
Memorial contributrions may be made to the Lafayette-Jackson Fire and Rescue Squad and/or St. Rita's Hospice of Lima.

Laura Sue Crowe
Died: Tuesday, June 4, 2002
Laura Sue Crowe, 37, of Ada, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at St. Rita's Medical Center.
She was born February 20, 1965 in Lima to Jim and Barbara (Poe) Hoyt.
Survivors include her special friend, Kenney Myers of Ada; one son, Andrew James Crowe of Ada; two daughters, Courtney Anna Crowe and Haylee Danielle Hoyt, both of Ada; one brother, Douglas (Nancy Wagner) Hoyt of Lima; her mother, Barbara Hoyt of Lima; grandmothers, Harriet Hoyt of Ada and Virginia Poe of McGuffey and grandfather, Merlin Poe of Lima.
She was preceded in death by an infant son Benjamin Crowe and grandfather James Earl Hoyt.
She was a homemaker and a graduate of Hardin Northern High School class of 1983. She attended Sugar Grove United Methodist Church of Ada.
Services were held Sunday June 9 at Price Funeral Home, Dunkirk, with Pastor Scot Caley officiating.
Burial was in Dola Cemetery.

Walter H. "Pete" Rodabaugh
Died: Monday, June 3, 2002
Walter H. �Pete' Rodabaugh, 75, of Forest, died Monday June 3, 2002, at Winebrenner Village Care Facility, Findlay.
He was born August 25, 1925 to Owen and Amanda (Marquart) Rodabaugh.
On August 26, 1947 he married M. Eloise Knight and she survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Larry (Chris) Sprout of Findlay and Mrs. Tim (Pat) Boutwell of Bluffton; one brother, Harold Rodabaugh of Bluffton; one sister, Clara Burrell of Findlay and two grandsons.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Vicki Lynn and brothers Lester Rodabaugh, Willis Rodabaugh, Chesney Rodabaugh and Floyd Rodabaugh and sisters, Mary Grabiel and Zelma Freed.
He was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Van Buren Township and had served as a trustee on the church council. He attended Rawson High School. He was self-employed as an independent trucker.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Van Buren Township with the Rev. Jennifer Elmquist officiating.
Burial will be in Eagle Creek Cemetery in Van Buren Township.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Crates Funeral Home, Arlington, and one hour prior to services at the church.
Memorials may be given to the church, Winebrenner Village or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Dana L. Anderson
Died: Saturday, May 25, 2002
Dana L. Anderson, 44, of Alger, died Saturday, May 25, 2002 at Lima Memorial Hospital, Lima.
He was born April 16, 1958 in Lima, to Clifford C. and Margaret Ann (Fancher) Anderson. His father survives in Alger.
Other survivors include a brother, Keith Anderson of Ada.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Ann (Fancher) Anderson.
He was a 1977 graduate of Upper Scioto Valley High School.
Services were held Wednesday, May 29 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Alger, with Pastor D. Ray Miller officiating.
Burial was in Preston Cemetery, Alger.

Ben P. Conley
Died: Wednesday, May 22, 2002
Ben P. Conley, 72, of Ada, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at Lima Memorial Hospital, Lima.
He was born April 4, 1930 in Bonanza, Kentucky, to Ottis and Grace (Harmon) Conley.
On November 2, 1949, he married Reita M. Woods, and she died on May 7, 1988. He then married Lois Myers Mathews on on July 7, 1997 and she survives in Ada.
Other survivors include a son, Mike (Sandra) Conley of Ada; two step-daughters: Karen (Rick) Smith of Lafayette and Sheri (John) Woodland of Findlay; a brother, Donald (Lois) Conley of Chantilly, Virginia; and three grandsons: Christopher Conley of Ada, Bryan Conley of Ada and Steven Conley of Ada.
He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Conley and by a granddaughter, Kathryn Conley.
Mr. Conley retired from Sheller Globe in 1982 after 32 years and he then worked in the maintenance department of the Oakwood Correctional Institute, and retired from there in 1991.
He was a Sergeant 1st Class in the U.S. Army and served in Korea. He retired from the Army Reserves after 26 years as Master Sergeant. He was a life member of the Ada VFW Post #9381 and a member of the Ada Lodge #344 F&AM. He was a life member of the Military Order of the Cooties Pup Tent #6 of Lima, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3615, and the Royal Order of the Moose #1533 of Indian Lake. He was also a life member of the AMVETS of Kenton and a member of the Northside Bassmasters Association.
Services were held on Saturday, May 25 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, with Pastor H.M. "Gus" Guthrie officiating.
Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada, with graveside military services by the Ada VFW Post #9381.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kidney Foundation and the American Heart Association.

Cecil T. Freytag
Died: Sunday, May 19, 2002
Cecil T. Freytag, 43, died May 19, 2002 at SCCI Hospital of Lima.
He was born August 1, 1958 in Lima to Robert and Barbara (Patterson) Freytag, who survive in Harrod.
On July 22, 1977, he married Jean M. McGrath, who survives in Harrod.
Also surviving is a son, Cecil T. Freytag II, of Harrod; a daughter, Donna Freytag, of Fostoria; a brother, Bob Freytag, of Lima; a sister, Kimberly Bingham, of Alger; and two grandchildren, Hailey and Troy Freytag.
He formerly worked at Associated Plastics of Ada and Metal Coating Company in Lima. He was a graduate of Upper Scioto Valley High School in 1977.
Services were Wednesday, May 22 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Alger, with Pastor Calvin Waugh officiating.
Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
