Died: Saturday, September 8, 2001
Evalyn Neiswander Halstead, 83, died September 8, 2001 in Vista, California.
She was born on July 24, 1918 in Newstark to Dr. Edgar and Alice Neiswander.
She was a graduate of Ada High School and Ohio Northern University.
Survivors include a brother, Glenn (Jinny) Neiswander of Ada; one daughter, Sharon Morrissey and three grandchildren, all of Vista, Calif.

L.J. "Jim" Massillo
Died: Sunday, September 2, 2001
L. J. Jim Massillo, 69, of Ada, died Sunday, September 2, 2001 of a massive heart attack in Xenia, Ohio.
He was born June 29, 1932 in Lima, to Lawrence J. and Glenda L. (Brewer) Massillo Sr., both of whom are deceased. On March 17, 1956, he married Paula M. Bastine, who survives in Ada.
Massillo was a self-employed building contractor. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church of Ada and a life-time member of the Ada Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9381. He was a member of the United States Parachute Association, the P.O.P.S. (Parachutists Over Phorty Society) and the S.O.S. (Skydivers Over Sixty). He was also a member of the C.C.O. (Converted Coach Owners).
He was a member of the 13th Bomb Squadron and a US Air Force Veteran who served during the Korean Conflict as a B26 Gunner.
Other survivors include two sons: Rory T. (Kelly) Massillo of Ada and Kurt L. (Mona) Massillo of Van Wert; two daughters: Teri A. Massillo of Tucson, Az. and Michelle (Randy) Bishop of Fostoria; one brother, Joe Massillo of Wisconsin; four sisters: Glenda Colburn of North Carolina, Amelia Shushok of Michigan, Elaine Finnell of Mississippi and Olivia LaJoie of Toledo; and seven grandchildren: Kye J. Massillo, Jamie Massillo, Nicole Massillo, Connor Massillo, Kory Bishop, Allie Bishop and Taylor Bishop.
He was preceded in death by two sisters: Mary Agnes Massillo and Glenda Massillo.
There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to: United States Parachute Association, ATTN: U.S. Team Trust Fund, 1440 Duke Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314, In Memory of Jim Massillo.
There will be a funeral wake at the Ada VFW Post 9381 on Friday, September 7 from 4-10 p.m.

William J. "Bill" Sonnett
Died: Sunday, September 2, 2001
William J. Bill Sonnett, 85, of Ada, died Sunday, September 2, 2001 at Richland Manor Nursing Home, Bluffton.
He was born September 24, 1915 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to William A. and Theresa M. (Clark) Sonnett.
On March 22, 1943 he married Eleanor B. Messerly, who survives in Ada.
Sonnett's family brought Ohio Kentucky Mfg. Co. to Ada from Cincinnati and when it was sold to Wilson Sporting Goods Mfg., he was made manager. He was First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during WWII and he was in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church of Ada. He was a member of the Ada VFW Post #9381 and the Kenton Elks Lodge #57. He also played golf at the Shawnee Country Club in Lima for many years.
Other survivors include a son, William T. Sonnett of Jackson, Michigan; a daughter, Nancy (Gene) Stanford of Holliston, Massachusetts; four grandchildren: William Anson, Corey and Kathleen Sonnett and Kerri Stanford.
He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday morning at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Ada with Rev. Dan Millisor officiating.
Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada.

Helen M. Ellis
Died: Friday, August 31, 2001
Helen M. Ellis, 75, of Lima, died Friday, August 31, 2001 at Hardin Hills Health Center, Kenton.
She was born November 4, 1925 in Hardin County to Ora and Gertrude (Carmean) Newland, both of whom are deceased.
On November 22, 1944, she married Lloyd E. Ellis, who died May 8, 1988.
Mrs. Ellis was a homemaker and a member of the Elida United Methodist Church in Elida.

She was preceded in death by three brothers: Raymond, William and Melvin.
Services were held on Monday, September 3 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home in Alger with Pastor Mark Bayliff officiating.
Burial was in Preston Cemetery, Alger. Memorial contributions may be made to Hardin County Hospice Care and/or to Hardin Hills Health Center.

Delores R. Runyan
Died: Thursday, August 30, 2001
Delores R. Runyan, 73, of Harrod, died Thursday, August 30, 2001 at her residence.
She was born September 1, 1927 in Detroit, Mich. to Frederick and Vergalea C. (Mason) Hartz.
In March of 1961, she married Robert E. Runyan, Sr., who died March 23, 1997.
Mrs. Runyan retired in June of 1988 after 41 years as an English teacher. She taught for 16 years at Bath Local Schools and 3 years at St. Rose Catholic School. She was a lifetime member of the Good Sam's Club, an avid camper, bingo player and Michigan Wolverine fan.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon (Jeff) Moser of Harrod; one half-brother, Charles Pullins of Alabama; three half-sisters: Darliene Scott, Leona Thomas and Beverly Van Wallegham, all of Detroit, Mich.; and two grandchildren: Brian Moser and Robyn Moser.
Services were held Tuesday, September 4 at Memorial Park Cemetery with Hospice Chaplain Joseph Pumphrey officiating. Burial followed the service in the same cemetery.

Francis D. "Sanky" Arnold
Died: Tuesday, August 28, 2001
Francis D. Sanky Arnold, 84, of Lafayette, died Tuesday, August 28, 2001 at Lost Creek Care Center in Lima.
He was born September 18, 1916 in Lafayette, to Joseph F. and Dile (Ransbottom) Arnold.
On July 26, 1941, he married Betty L. Wise, who died on September 12, 1984.
He was a farmer and the owner of Arnold's Mink Ranch and Arnold's Place.
He was a member of the Lafayette First United Methodist Church and a member of the Hog Creek Game Club. He was a 1934 graduate of the Lafayette-Jackson High School.
Survivors include two sons: Dennis L. (Judith) Arnold of Lafayette and David A. Arnold of Lafayette; 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Arnold and a sister, Edith Klingler.
Services were held Friday, August 31 at Chiles & Sons - Laman Lewis Chapel with Rev. Larry Hopkins officiating. Burial was in Lafayette.

Steven L. Scott
Died: Saturday, August 25, 2001
Steven L. Scott, 42, of Springfield lost a courageous battle with cancer Saturday, August 25, 2001 at 10:45 p.m.
He was born June 30, 1959 in Lima, the son of Elmer and Phyllis (Puckett) Scott. He was a graduate of the class of 1977 from Upper Scioto Valley High School in McGuffey. He had worked at Honda of America for the past 12 years. Steven was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church. He was assistant track coach for Upper Scioto Valley High School, boys and girls track from 1989-1990. He loved sports and enjoyed running, having run in the Columbus Marathon.
Steven was a loving husband and father. He was an inspiration for his strength and courage, a compassionate, kind and humble man. He will be missed dearly.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Jane (Gies) Scott and his parents, who survive in Alger; a son, Jason Scott of Marseilles, a daughter, Jennifer Scott of Kenton; two step-sons: Dallas Root of Springfield and Dustin (Trisha) Wolford of Cincinnati; a step-daughter, Amber Root of Springfield; a brother, Kevin (Brenda) Scott of Harrod; two sisters: Cami (Andy) Nichelson of Kenton and Erin (Casey) Hennigan of Mechanicsburg.He was a brother-in-law to Mike and Darla Geis, Francis and Katie Gies, Adam and Susie Geis, Danny and Collette White and had many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Wednesday morning, August 29, at Covenant Presbyterian Church with Rev. Tom Stout, Rev. Carol Ann Fleming and Rev. Judy Hoffhine officiating.
Interment was in Somerford Cemetery.

Jack L. Whitaker
Died: Thursday, August 23, 2001
Jack L. Whitaker, 63, of Alger, died Thursday, August 23, 2001 at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.
He was born January 9, 1938 in Homer, Mich., to Hayden and Anna Marie (House) Whitaker. He was also raised by his late step-father Ronald Rizer. On December 20, 1958, he married Marlene McKenzie, who survives in Alger.
Other survivors include one son, Todd (Glenda) Whitaker of Alger; two daughters: Cindy (Jim) Bartholomew of Wapakoneta and Jackie (Tony) Risner of McGuffey; one brother, Jerry (Brenda) Whitaker of Kenton; several step-brothers and step-sisters; several nieces and nephews and ten grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Greg Anthony Whitaker and a brother, Leroy Whitaker.
Mr. Whitaker owned and operated Whitaker Motor Sales in Alger since 1972. He was also employed at Ford Motor Co. for 40 years as an AEO.
He was a past member of the Moose Lodge in Kenton and the Ada F & AM Lodge #344. He was a member of UAW Local 1219 and the International Hot Rod Association.
Services were held Monday, August 27 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Alger, with Rev. A. B. Rowe and Rev. Calvin Waugh officiating.
Burial was in Preston Cemetery, Alger. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Leukemia Division.

Joy Lee Shepherd
Died: Sunday, August 19, 2001
Joy Lee Shepherd, 67, of Alger, died Sunday, August 19, 2001 at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.
She was born June 27, 1934 in Brethette County, KY, to Jake and Effie (Howard) Rowe, both of whom are deceased.
On July 7, 1952, she married Alonzo Shepherd, who died February 22, 1992.
Mrs. Shepherd was a homemaker who attended the Ada Full Gospel Church.
Survivors include three sons: Kirk (Zelma) Shepherd of Alger, Bill Shepherd of Alger, and Jake Allen (Chris) Shepherd of Rawson; three daughters: Linda (Rick) Mundy of Alger, Cindy (Larry) Ramey of McGuffey and Rhonda (Roy) Woodruff of Alger; two brothers: Chalmer (Rhonda) Rowe of Alger and Bernie (Teresa) Rowe of Lafayette; three sisters: Rosie (Buster) Evans of Alger, Florence Quicksell of Lawrenceburg, Indiana and Ethel (Don) Arnett of Alger; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers: Kelly and Dexter Rowe.
Services were held Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Alger, with Pastor Robert Dye officiating.
Burial was in Preston Cemetery, Alger.

Robert Sparks
Died: Saturday, August 18, 2001
Robert Sparks, 71, of Kenton, died Saturday, August 18, 2001 at his residence in Kenton.
He was born July 16, 1930 in Hardin County, to Cornelius and Cora (Bays) Sparks, Sr. His father is deceased, and his mother, Cora Draper survives in Kenton.
On January 26, 1952, he married Jeraldine Stone. They remained married for 25 years, and she survives in Kenton.
Other survivors include a son, David (Lorinda) Sparks of Roundhead; two daughters: Darlene (Rudy) Altamirano of Kenton and Denise Guess of Kenton; a sister, Katie Cottle of Kenton; two brothers: Johnnie (Maxine) Marshall of Lake Okeechobee, Fla. and Fred Sparks of Port Orange, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Cornelius Sparks, Jr. and a sister, Thelma Neeley.
Mr. Sparks owned and operated Sparks Polishing Company in Kenton for nearly 40 years. He was a veteran of the US Army. He was a member of the AMVETS Post 1994; the Eagles Elks and Moose Lodges, all in Kenton; the Masonic Wayne Lodge #569 of Waynesfield and the Aladdin Shrine of Columbus. He was a member of the Quickstep Pentecostal Church of God in Alger and the Calvary Tabernacle Church in Kenton. He was a life-long resident of Hardin County and attended school at Roundhead, Alger, and McGuffey.
Services were held Wednesday, August 22 at Hanson-0Neely Funeral Home, Alger, with Rev. James Short officiating.
Burial was in Preston Cemetery, Alger, with the AMVETS Post 1994 of Kenton conducting graveside military services.

Eloise S. (Schaefer) Tressel
Died: Saturday, August 18, 2001
Eloise S. (Schaefer) Tressel, 76, of Berea, died Saturday, August 18, 2001 at Ohio State University's James Cancer Hospital.
She was the beloved wife of the late Lee J. Tressel and dear mother of Richard (Connie), David (Sharon) and James (Ellen); dear grandmother of Michael, Benjamin, Luke, Lee, Julie, Chris, Mark, Zak, Carlee, Whitney and Eric; sister of Edmund (Jean) Schaefer.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, August 21 at Finnie Stadium in Berea. A private burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada.

Eva P. Siferd
Died: Thursday, August 16, 2001
Eva P. Siferd, 78, died August 16, 2001 at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.
She was born October 5, 1922, in Lima, to the late Gilbert Washington and Sarah Eva Fay Archer. On December 4, 1945, she married Lawrence L. Siferd, who died May 28, 1972.
Mrs. Siferd was a homemaker and a loving mother. She was a member of several organizations including the American Association of Retired Persons, Lafayette Chapter 121 Order of the Eastern Star and a high school sorority. She graduated from Lima South High School in January, 1942. She enjoyed NASCAR and Ohio State football.
Survivors include a daughter, Eva M. Babe (Kenneth) Erb of Wapakoneta; a son, Larry G. (Laura) Siferd of Lima; a granddaughter, Eva M. Shelley (Terry) Schultz of St. Johns; a grandson, Michael Erb of Wapakoneta; four great-grandchildren: Cody Schultz, Elizabeth Schultz, Joanna Schultz and Dylan Schultz; a half-brother, Forrest (Ruth) Archer; two half-sisters: Barbara (Josh) Enyart and Patricia (Daniel) Hunlock and many friends.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Gilberta Woten; a half-sister, Caroline Battels; a half-brother, Dall Archer and a sister-in-law, Vera Compton.
Services were held Saturday, August 18, at Siferd Funeral Home, Westwood Chapel in Lima. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Lima.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mary Catherine Humphreys
Died: Monday, August 13, 2001
Mary Catherine Humphreys, 80, of Morgantown, WV, died Monday, August 13, 2001 at her home after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
She was born June 25, 1921, in Ada, to the late Archie Granville and Alice Ellen (Kuhn) Staley.
She graduated from Ada High School and then earned her R.N. from Lima Memorial School of Nursing in 1939. She served as a second lieutenant with the U. S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II. She was a registered nurse at WVU Hospital from 1957 until her retirement in 1985. She served as a volunteer at Ruby Memorial Hospital from 1985-2000 and was named Volunteer of the Year in 1992. She was a faithful member of the Madigan Avenue Church of Christ. Her hobbies included reading, cooking and organic gardening.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Arlie Neil Humphreys; a son, Arlie Neil Humphreys, Jr.; a daughter, Mary Lou (Dan) Myer; three grandchildren: Phillip Andrew (Shawn) Myer, Archie Neil Humphreys and Mary Ann Myer (Shawn) Long; and two great-granddaughters: Lauryn and Cathryn Myer, all of Morgantown, WV. She is also survived by two sisters: Florence Wright and Dorothy O'Brien, both of Ada, and a brother, John Staley, of Kenton.
Services were held Wednesday, August 15 at Dering's Funeral Home in Morgantown, WV, with Karl McLarty and Rev. Max Humphreys officiating. Burial was in Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens.

Vernon Wilcox
Died: Thursday, June 6, 2002
Vernon Wilcox, 68, of Alger, died Thursday, June 6, 2002 at Lima Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 29, 1934 in Floyd County, Kentucky to Oakie and Erma (Horne) Wilcox.
On April 13, 1957 he married Shirley L. Carmean who survives in Alger.
Other survivors include two sons, Doug (Marcia) Wilcox of Waynesfield and Jack ((Jane) Wilcox of Alger; one daughter, Connie Kindle of Alger; one sister Reni Guyton of Ada; one brother, Tom Wilcox of Prestonsburg, Ky.; one granddaughter, Jennifer Wilcox; and six grandsons, Billy Kindle, Doug Wilcox, Jason Wilcox, Adam Kindle, Christopher Kindle, Bobby (Kim) Mika and one great-granddaughter, Stevie Mika.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Joseph Wilcox and three sisters, Billie Wilcox, Etta Whitaker and Jean Greer and one brother, Woodrow Wilcox.
He was a truck driver for BOC Gases (Airco Industrial Gases) of Lima. He retired after 30 years.
Services were held Saturday, June 8 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Alger with the Reverend James Holbrook officiating.
Burial was in Preston Cemetery, Alger.

Donald G. Brown, 67, of Lafayette, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at his residence in Harrod.
He was born June 22, 1934 in Lima to Edward and Theresia (Brockert) Brown.
On June 6, 1953 he married M. Corrine Bassitt and she survives in Lafayette.
Also surviving are two sons: Donald E. (Karen) Brown of Bluffton and Kenneth Brown of Alger; three daughters: Cathy (Jeff) Augsburger of Lima; Karen (Jr.) Newman of Kenton; and Cynthia Watkins of Kenton; three sisters: Alicia Thompson of Cridersville; Teresa (Richard) Cotrell of Lima; and Helen Morris of Leipsic; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters: Agnes Hughes and Mary Thompson; four brothers, Clarence, Bernard, Edward and Leonard; one son, Timothy Wayne Brown and one great-grandson.
He was a welder at Kenton Structural & Ornamental Iron Works of Kenton, where he retired after 23 years.
Services were held Saturday, June 8 at the Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, with Pastor David Thompson officiating.
Burial was at Lafayette Cemetery, Lafayette.
Memorial contributrions may be made to the Lafayette-Jackson Fire and Rescue Squad and/or St. Rita's Hospice of Lima.

Laura Sue Crowe

Laura Sue Crowe, 37, of Ada, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at St. Rita's Medical Center.
She was born February 20, 1965 in Lima to Jim and Barbara (Poe) Hoyt.
Survivors include her special friend, Kenney Myers of Ada; one son, Andrew James Crowe of Ada; two daughters, Courtney Anna Crowe and Haylee Danielle Hoyt, both of Ada; one brother, Douglas (Nancy Wagner) Hoyt of Lima; her mother, Barbara Hoyt of Lima; grandmothers, Harriet Hoyt of Ada and Virginia Poe of McGuffey and grandfather, Merlin Poe of Lima.
She was preceded in death by an infant son Benjamin Crowe and grandfather James Earl Hoyt.
She was a homemaker and a graduate of Hardin Northern High School class of 1983. She attended Sugar Grove United Methodist Church of Ada.
Services were held Sunday June 9 at Price Funeral Home, Dunkirk, with Pastor Scot Caley officiating.
Burial was in Dola Cemetery.

Walter H. "Pete" Rodabaugh
Died: Monday, June 3, 2002
Walter H. "Pete' Rodabaugh, 75, of Forest, died Monday June 3, 2002, at Winebrenner Village Care Facility, Findlay.
He was born August 25, 1925 to Owen and Amanda (Marquart) Rodabaugh.
On August 26, 1947 he married M. Eloise Knight and she survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Larry (Chris) Sprout of Findlay and Mrs. Tim (Pat) Boutwell of Bluffton; one brother, Harold Rodabaugh of Bluffton; one sister, Clara Burrell of Findlay and two grandsons.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Vicki Lynn and brothers Lester Rodabaugh, Willis Rodabaugh, Chesney Rodabaugh and Floyd Rodabaugh and sisters, Mary Grabiel and Zelma Freed.
He was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Van Buren Township and had served as a trustee on the church council. He attended Rawson High School. He was self-employed as an independent trucker.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Van Buren Township with the Rev. Jennifer Elmquist officiating.
Burial will be in Eagle Creek Cemetery in Van Buren Township.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Crates Funeral Home, Arlington, and one hour prior to services at the church.
Memorials may be given to the church, Winebrenner Village or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Dana L. Anderson, 44, of Alger, died Saturday, May 25, 2002 at Lima Memorial Hospital, Lima.
He was born April 16, 1958 in Lima, to Clifford C. and Margaret Ann (Fancher) Anderson. His father survives in Alger.
Other survivors include a brother, Keith Anderson of Ada.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Ann (Fancher) Anderson.
He was a 1977 graduate of Upper Scioto Valley High School.
Services were held Wednesday, May 29 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Alger, with Pastor D. Ray Miller officiating.
Burial was in Preston Cemetery, Alger.
