Cecil Melvin Hammock
Cecil Melvin Hammock, 73, of Bostwick, went home to be with the Lord on July 10, 2005. He was born July 3, 1932 the son of the late Tracey and Minnie Lee Peppers Hammock of Bostwick. He was married to the late Doris A. Hammock.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Diane Hammock, Billy Wayne and Dee Hammock, daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Mike McElhannon, all of Bostwick; nine grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, sister, Rachel H. Norris of Athens, and a brother, Tracey S. Hammock Jr. of Walnut Grove. One sister, Shirley H. Kinney preceded in death.
Mr. Hammock was the owner and operator of Bostwick Upholstery Shop in Bostwick.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 12, at Gibbs Memorial Baptist Church in Bostwick with the Rev. Tom Owens, Rev. Chris Conner and Rev. Stacey Carver officiating. Interment was in Bostwick Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Chris McElhannon, Derrick Binion, Mark Batchelor, Charles Ruark, Ja. R. Harwell and Steve Rhoadees.
Meadows Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Craig Lovin
Craig Lovin, 17, of Greensboro, died Thursday, July 7, 2005. He was born in Clarke County on January 12, 1988, the son of Bruce and Vicki Lovin of Greensboro. He was a student at Greene County High School where he was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, treasurer of FFA and lettered in football, baseball and basketball. Along with school sports he loved hunting, fishing and all outdoor activities. He was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church of Union Point.
In addition to his parents, Vicki and Bruce Lovin of Greensboro, he is survived by a sister, Katie Lovin and a brother, Cody Lovin of the home; maternal grandparents, Tom and Linda Smith of Athens, paternal grandparents, Henry and Jean Lovin of Conyers, aunts and uncles, Danny and Becky Moore of Conyers, Mark and Sherri Smith of Gainesville, Don and Donna Sorrells of Pendergrass, and Steve and Paula Loyd of Cumming, several cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 10 at 2 p.m. at Bethesda Baptist Church in Union Point with Rev. Jim Olds, Rev. Dave Sandridge and Rev. Jim Martin officiating. Interment was at the Church Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Dan Fowler, Bo Bowler, Tyler Moore, Hunter Sheffield, Cole Sumner, Garrett Usry, Shaun McCommons, John Calvin Kinser, Blake Cook and Josh Clifton. Honorary pallbearers were Bethesda Baptist Church Youth and the Greene County High School Football Team.

Daisy B. Wilson
Daisy B. Wilson, of Appling, died Tuesday, July 5, 2005 at University Hospital. A native of Morgan County, she had resided in the Augusta area for the past 50 years. She retired in 1988 from BellSouth after 35 years with Operator Services. She was a member of the Communication Workers of America, the Telephone Pioneers of America and a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Alice Warren Chapter # 483.
She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
She was married to Earnest L. Wilson who preceded her in death.
She is survived by two daughters, Sheri Wilson Jackson and Andrea Ring and her husband, Michael, all of Appling; a sister, Maggie Sue Bridges of Madison, a brother, Harold Lamar Bryant of Gibson, four grandchildren, Lauren Jackson, Zoye Ring, Daniel Ring and Kira Mehias; special friend and companion, Weldon Junior Brooks, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 8 from the Chapel of Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Martinez with Rev. Chris Griggs officiating. Interment was in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Dorothy Eason Lee
Dorothy Eason Lee, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. died Wednesday, July 6, 2005 in the Winyah Hospice of Charleston, S.C. following an extended illness.
A native f Appling County, Mrs. Lee had lived in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. for the past three years. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She retired as Vice President of Bank of America where she had been employed for 30 years.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 9, at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Julian Tucker officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Richard Eason, Earl Eason, Wade Hampton Barrineau IV, Jon Paul Joseph Barrineau, Claybourne Lee Barrineau and Corry Eason Barrineau.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan Norten and Jennie Lee of Madison; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Wade H. Barrineau of Isle of Palms, S.C. a brother, Montee Eason of Ocala, Fla., six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Terrell Eugene Knight Jr.
Terrell Eugene Knight Jr., 44, of Eatonton, died Thursday, July 7, 2005 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens.
He was born July 13, 1960 in Walton County the son of Terrell E. Knight Sr. and the late Leavern Hoyt Knight. He was a carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Janet L. Knight of Eatonton, Father, Terrell E. Knight Sr. of Bishop, a son, Bobby Knight and a daughter, Leslie Knight, both of Eatonton.
A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, at Prospect United Methodist Church with Rev. Clint Mainard officiating.

Dorothy Clabough Compton
Dorothy Clabough Compton, 78, died July 13, 2005 at her home in Buckhead, surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 13, 1927 in Maryville, Tenn. to Luther and Nola Clabough.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Hollis L. Compton; her daughters and son-in-law, Holly Penney of Conyers and Cathy and John Savolt of Loganville. She was Granny to her grandchildren, Buddy Hall of Atlanta, Jeff and Tammy Hall of Loganville, Courtney and Drew Wynn of Watkinsville, Jeremey Hall of Atlanta, Kristi Penney and Jason Penney, both of Conyers; three great-grandchildren, Alexandria and Skyler Hall of Loganville and Ben Hall of Atlanta. Also, her special friend and assistant, Catherine Williams of Madison and many wonderful friends and family.
Mrs. Compton was a tender, generous and caring person to all who knew her. She will be forever missed and hold a special place in our hearts.
A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 17, at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery in Madison.

David Thaxton Hancock
David Thaxton Hancock, 62, of 965 Winterville Road, Athens, died in an automobile accident Monday, July 18, 005.
A native of Athens, he was a graduate of Athens High School and The University of Georgia. He was the Service Director for Phil Cook Motor Company in Madison.
He was the son of the late Alice Thaxton Hancock and Robert Derrell Hancock. He was a lifelong member of Tuckston United Methodist Church where he was a member of Tuckston United Methodist Men, Faithlinks Sunday School Class and Rapid Response Team.
He coached the Dairy Pak International Little League team at Satterfield Park for 14 years and was a member of the Northeast Georgia Officials Association for 26 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Fleming Hancock; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bryan David and Sabrina Hancock and Brad Edward and Heather Hancock; two grandchildren, Sydney Raquel Hancock and Bryce David Hancock; sister and brother-in-law Jacque and Richard aHouse; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Susan Hancock; aunt and uncle, Dycie Hancock Schneider and Charles Schneider; uncle, Lamar Thaxton and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
His family and friends will remember his love of the Lord, his love and of life, his generosity and his caring ways.
Celebration services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 21 at Tuckston United Methodist Church with Lee McNeal and Dr. Doug Thrasher officiating. Elizabeth Wallace Hayes
Elizabeth Wallace Hayes, 84, of Clarksville, Tenn. died July 14, 2005 at her residence. She was born February 25, 1921 in Rutledge, the daughter of the late Marion Carl Wallace and the late Jesse Knight Wallace. She was married to LTC James Marvin Hayes Jr., (Ret.), who preceded her in death. Mrs. Hayes was a member of Madison Street United Methodist Church, past regent and member of the DAR — Capt. William Edmiston Chapter, founder of James Marvin Hayes Jr. Music Scholarship Endowment at Austing Peay State University, supporter of Custom House Museum, supporter of Middle Tennessee Council Boy Scouts of America, member of Clarksville Country Club, member of Cedar Creek Yacht Club in Mt. Juliet, Tenn. She loved to play with her Thursday Night Bridge Club and her Tuesday Poker Club.
She is survived by four daughters, Marian Hayes Johnston, Anne Hayes Tanner, Lynne Hayes Garito and Frances Hayes Schnare; 10 grandchildren, Melissa Anne Tanner, Brandi Elizabeth Johnston, Jonathan Geary Tanner, Elizabeth Schnare Hayes, Courtney Lynne Johnston, Cayce Cameron Schnare, Philip Newton Garito, Lindsay Marie Garito, James Dominic Garito and William Cory Schnare. Funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 16, at Madison Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. LeNoir Culbertson officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Richard Watson Best
Richard Watson Best, 89, of West Palm Beach, Fla., passed away Thursday, July 21.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Holland Best, a brother, Tom Best, and two sisters, Mildred Best Snellings and Tieney Best Coleman.
Mr. Best was a World War II Air Force veteran and a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law.
He practiced law in Atlanta for nearly 50 years.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Cathy Best of Fond du Lac, Wisc., a daughter and son-in-law, Liz Best and Lannis Waters of West Palm Beach, four grandchildren, Joseph and Thomas Best of Fond du Lac, Wisc., and Martha and Alice Waters of West Palm Beach, Fla., a sister, Trudy Best Harden of Naples, Fla., a brother, Bo Chambers of Atlanta, two brothers-in- law, James Edgar Coleman of Fort Gaines, and John K. Snellings of Atlanta, a sister-in-law, Gera H. Goode of Missoula, Mont., and many loving nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Fort Gaines. Burial will follow in New Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of Palm Beach County.

Bernice Wright Conner Henson
Bernice Wright Conner Henson, 82, of Easley, S.C., formerly of Greenville, died Friday, July 29, 2005, at the Hospice House of Anderson.
Born in Morgan County, Georgia, Mrs. Henson was the daughter of the late William and Bessie Smith Wright. She retired from Easley Health Care as a dietician and she attended Trinity Baptist Church.
She is survived by a son, Claude Conner of Charlotte, N.C., and a daughter, Nancy F. Feuerhammer of Easley; a brother, Bennie Wright of Palatka, Fla.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, M. C. Conner Jr. who was killed in action during World War II; by her second husband, Jones P. Henson; and a brother, John Wright.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 8, at Madison City Cemetery in Madison with the Rev. Randy Smith officiating.

Michael Marshall
Michael Marshall of Madison died Friday, July 29, 2005 at Newton Medical Center at the age of 52. Son of the late Gilbert Richard and Betty Jean Wright, Mr. Marshall was self-employed as a welder. He enjoyed football, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Sharri and Jerry Richards of Conyers, Tracy and Scott Silvers and Kimberly Hudgins, all of Madison; sons and daughter-in-law, Michael David Marshall Jr. of Cobb County, Kevin and Gina Harden of Shady Dale; Tommy Sr. and Gabrielle Marshall of Covington, 10 grandchildren, sisters and brother-in-law, Renne and Tommy Pack of South Carolina, Angie Angland of Cobb County; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby and Sue Wright, Alan and Michelle Angland, all of Cobb County.

Harold Dean Teague
Harold Dean Teague, 65, of Lake City, Florida died Sunday, July 24, 2005 in South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta. He was born August 13, 1939 on Underwood Street in Asheboro, North Carolina to the late Joseph and Adele Teague.
Mr. Teague was employed by Wellington Industries in Asheboro, NC. He was also employed by Asheboro City School System as a teacher and Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro, NC. He graduated from Asheboro High School in Asheboro, NC and attended Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Ben Rector, Richmond, Vir.; two sisters, Barbara Teague Young of Nashville, Tenn. and Hilda Teague Garner of Seagrove, NC .

Bertice Iowa Scruggs
Bertice Iowa Scruggs, 89, of Carnesville, died Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at her residence.
Mrs. Scruggs was a native of Gwinnett County, but had made her home in Barnesville for most of her life before moving to Carnesville a few years ago. She was the daughter of the late Wilbur Hay and the late Harriett Cate Hay. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Scruggs was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Scruggs.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 6, in the Chapel of Williams Funeral Home with interment in Culloden Baptist Church Cemetery.
She is survived by her daughter, Patsy Smith of Carnesville; sons, Herschel Scruggs of Madison, Bobby Scruggs of Fortville, Indiana, John Scruggs of Rutledge, Luther Scruggs and Dan Scruggs, both of Hiawassee, Killis Scruggs of Newnan, a sister, Biefie Cook of Hampton, and her companion of 42 years, Grover L. Mason of Carnesville; 32 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Bobby Gene Anderson
Bobby Gene Anderson, 64, of Madison died Thursday, August 4, 2005 at his residence. He was a fireman for the City of Madison for 30 years.
He was born February 8, 1941 in Oconee County, to the late Jack Anderson and Ruby Tumlin Anderson of Rutledge.
Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 7, at Simmons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stacy Carver officiating. Interment was in Madison Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife, Hillma C. Anderson of Madison; mother, Ruby T. Anderson of Rutledge; four daughters, Becky Townsend of St. Mary’s, Pamela Foust of Tucson, Arizona, Rhonda Wallace and Karen Anderson, both of Madison; four sons, Wade Anderson of Madison, Jim McNair of Vidalia, Robbie Anderson of Eatonton, David Anderson of Madison; two brothers, Howard Anderson of Monroe and Tommy Anderson of Madison; a sister, Patricia Shelton of Rutledge, 22 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Jean Guill Price
Jean Guill Price, 77, of Madison died Friday, August 5, 2005.
Mrs. Price, a native of Morgan County, was the daughter of the late Howard Avery and Mary Frances Stovall Guill. She was a member of the Apalachee Baptist Church, a founding member and Patriarch of the Eatonton Duplicate Bridge Club. She was also a member of the UDC and various other local service organizations.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph L. Price Jr. of Madison; Avery and Ernie Rogers of Madison, Joe and Darlene Price of Madison and Mike Price of Memphis, Tenn.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A Sunrise graveside service was held at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 9 at the Apalachee Cemetery with Chaplain Hugh Minor officiating.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Morgan County Humane Society, P. O. Box 1266, Madison, GA 30650.

Kay Bryan Alford
Kay Bryan Alford, 43, of Loganville, died August 3, 2005. She was born in Walton County on August 29, 1961 to Mildred Ervin Bryan and the late James W. Bryan.
Surviving are her husband, Nathan Wayne Alford of Loganville; son, Kyle J. Whitley of Monroe; mother, Mildred Ervin Bryan of Monroe; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Carol Bryan of Monroe, and Danny and Cathy Bryan of Monroe; sisters and brothers-in-law, Charlotte and Bob Longshore of Blountstown, Fla., and Joanne and John Wilson of Monroe.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 6, at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Greg Butler, the Rev. Roy Turk and the Rev. Chris Conner officiating. Interment was at Hill Haven Cemetery.

Thomas Anthony Brown
Master Sergeant Thomas Anthony "Tony" Brown, 43, of Madison died August 7, 2005. MSG Brown was a native of Morgan County, born July 18, 1962 to Tom and Hazel Brown. He was a graduate of Morgan County High School and a life long resident of Morgan County.
Shortly after high school he joined the United States Army and made a career of serving his country. At the time of his death, MSG Brown was on assignment with the U.S. Army, Active Guard Reserve. It was very evident that he was honored to serve not only this country, but the cause of freedom around the world. He was also a devoted husband, a proud father and a committed Christian.
MSG Brown is survived by his wife, Page Hembree Brown and four sons: Josh Brown, U.S. Navy, Seattle, Wash., Isreel Brown, U.S. Army National Guard, Iraq, Zach Brown and Parker Brown, both of Madison; his parents, Tom and Hazel Brown of Madison; one brother, Greg and Krista Brown of Atlanta and a sister, Ray and Chris Rice of LaGrange; father and mother-in-law, Kenneth and Barbara Hembree of Madison and brother-in-law, Ken and Sharon Hembree of Newnan, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service to honor MSG Tony Brown will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of A. E. Carter Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Madison Memorial Park. Louise Stanley Ashurst
Louise Stanley Ashurst, 86, died peacefully at home on August 6, 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Morris Ashurst.
She was born in Allahabad, India to missionary parents, John and Zada Stanley. She graduated from Decatur High, Decatur, earned her undergraduate degree from Georgia State College for Women, and advanced degrees from The University of Georgia.
She moved to Eatonton in 1940 to teach at Eatonton High School. Mrs. Ashurst taught Putnam County students for 44 years. She continued after retirement to tutor high school and college students in chemistry, math and physics as long as her health allowed. She delighted in seeing the expanding success her students enjoyed in all walks of life.
In 1962 Mrs. Ashurst was the recipient of a National Science Foundation Scholarship, she was honored to be selected Star Teacher three times, she received community service awards from the City of Eatonton and the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce. The Sunday school class she taught for many years was renamed "Louise’s Garden" in 2000.
In addition to being an educator she was active in the Pilot Club, charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teacher’s honorary society. She was a Sunday school teacher/director, choir member and deacon for First Baptist Church of Eatonton. After retiring from the public school system she continued a life long commitment to helping others and she went on to new careers with the City of Eatonton managing the Water Department and in selling real estate.
Mrs. Ashurst is survived by a son, Morris E. Ashurst Jr. (Janice), of Stone Mountain, a daughter, Judith Louise Gilbert (Bruce) of Madison, a sister, Helen Flynt (Bill), of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and a brother, Dr. John (Margaret) Stanley of Bremerton, Wash.; five grandchildren, Ted Ashurst (Stephanie) of Nashville, Tenn., Chris Gilbert Hodges (Foss) of Madison, Allison Ashurst Ross (Trae) of Oxford, Lee Gilbert (Aimee) of Madison, Dr/Capt. Curt Gilbert (Ellyn) of San Antonio, Texas and nine great-grandchildren
with two more on the way.
The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 8, at the First Baptist Church, Eatonton. Rev. Bill Kitchen officiated with many of her former students including Holly Parker, Dudley Horton and Edge Farley spoke about the impact her life has made on many people speaking and participating in the service.
Her grandchildren and Richard Marshall served as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Eatonton Putnam Arts Foundation, Inc. P.O. Box 4874, Eatonton, GA 31024, earmarked Louise Ashurst reception room for the renovation of the Old Eatonton School on Madison Avenue, Eatonton.

Captain Cornelius John Meagher
Former U.S. Army Captain Neil Meagher, 77, of Farmington died August 13, 2005 at his home surrounded by his family. A native of Kansas City, MO, Mr. Meagher was the son of Vincent Michael and Helen Chashian Meagher. He served in the United States Army as Platoon Leader and later Captain in the U.S. Army Reserve. He received numerous medals for his service during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Meagher was a graduate of the Marist School in Atlanta and the University of Georgia graduating class of 1951, where he was a member of the Chi Psi fraternity. He married his wife Dorothy on December 1, 1962. In 1978 they moved their family to Oconee County. He was self-employed as a farmer raising chickens. He was an active member of Saint James Catholic Church in Madison and a volunteer with the Oconee County Fire Department and First Responders. He was also proud of his membership with the 2nd Infantry Division, Korean War Veterans Alliance.
Mr. Meagher is survived by his wife, Dorothy Meagher and five children, Stephen Joseph Meagher of Bogart, Mary Theresa Corrigan
of Jacksonville, Fla., Ann Marie Mitchell of Farmington, David John Meagher of Bogart and Major Kevin Michael Meagher of Charleston,
WV; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by a brother, Vincent Meagher Jr.
A rosary was held Monday evening, August 11, at 7 p.m. at A.E. Carter Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 16 at St. James Catholic Church with Monsignor Peter Dora officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
A.E. Carter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Emma Fleeman Schulte
Mary Schulte, 82, of Madison died August 14, 2005 at Eatonton Health and rehab. She was born April 27, 1923 to Reese and Corina Jones Fleeman in Madison County. She was marry to Paul C. Schulte Sr. and lived most of her life in Gwinnett County. In 1982 the family moved to Madison.
Mrs. Schulte was a member of St. Anna Catholic Church in Monroe. She enjoyed painting birdhouses with her husband, Paul and growing and selling vegetables from their garden.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Paul C. Schulte Sr., seven children, Linda Lee Mothershed of Loganville, Lonnie Stephen Rentz of Braselton, Mary Paula Potter of Madison, Suzanne Ruth Franklin of Braselton, Joanna Frances Porter of Jefferson, Paul C. Schulte Jr. of Buckhead and David Joseph Schulte of Milledgeville, 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at A. E. Carter Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in Fairview Memorial Gardens in Stockbridge.
A. E. Carter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lois A Hollingsworth
Lois A. Hollingsworth, 92, of Madison died Tuesday, August 23, 2005, at Madison Health and Rehab. She was born July 8, 1913 in Gordon County, to R. W. Haygood Sr. and Mattie Brand.
She was married to Guy Hollingsworth who preceded her in death. She was a housewife.
She is survived by two nieces, Pauline Hicks of Madison and Nell King of Alabama; a nephew, Thomas Eller of Buckhead, and a half-brother, R. W. Haygood of Eatonton.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 25, at Simmons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Pearson officiating. Interment will be in Brownwood Baptist Church Cemetery.
Simmons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
