James A. ``Yummy'' Butalla, 60, of Loyalhanna, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at IHS at Mountain View, Unity Township. He was born Nov. 7, 1938, in Latrobe, a son of Stephen J. and Mary Ann Baran Butalla of Loyalhanna. He was a member of St. Rose Church, Latrobe, and was retired from the church. He was a member of the White House Club, Loyalhanna, and F.O.E. #01188, Latrobe. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Stephen J. Butalla and his wife, Paulette, of Pensacola, Fla.; a sister, Patricia Holden and her husband, Scott, of Latrobe; also survived by a niece, Heather; a nephew, Chad; and a great-niece, Mallory. CURTIS M. CACKOWSKI
Curtis M. Cackowski, 39, of Youngwood, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in the Forbes Regional Hospital, Monroeville. He was born in Greensburg, Nov. 25, 1959, a son of Evelyn Brosnick Cackowski of Greensburg and the late Marion Cackowski. He was a certified public accountant and was Catholic by faith. He was a former teacher of the C.C.D. class at St. Bruno's Church in South Greensburg, and a member of the P.I.C.P.A., the Norwin Jaycees, and the Hillview City Bowling League. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his cousin, Dana Noel. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife, Karen Nye Cackowski; and a brother, David Cackowski of Greensburg. Irene Slater Iager, 80, of Columbia, Md., died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, of a massive stroke. She was born Nov. 17, 1918, a daughter of the late William Garland and Eva Elizabeth Long Slater. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, the Rev. Floyd Burns and Mr. Albert Iager; sisters, Ethel Vorlage and Irma Jensen; and a brother, Zelmen Slater. Irene graduated from Youngwood High School in 1936 and from Seton Hill College in 1940. She was an organist for St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Youngwood, and taught at Youngwood High School. PAUL J. KARDOS
Paul J. Kardos, 69, of Apollo, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at his home. He was born May 22, 1930, in East Vandergrift, a son of the late Nicholas J. and Anna Kromka Kardos. He had lived in Apollo and the Apollo area all of his life. He was an employee of Gulf Research in Harmarville for 28 years, where he worked as a pilot plant operator, retiring in 1985. Mr. Kardos, along with his wife, operated the Carriage House Gift & Antique Shop in Apollo. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean war. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Juanita Rodocker Kardos; two sons, Dr. William P. Kardos of Spring Church, Pa., and Robert A. Kardos of Apollo; three brothers, Joseph Kardos of West Leechburg, Nicholas and Patrick Kardos, both of Washington Township; three sisters, Elizabeth Plazio of Apollo, Loretta Kardos of Washington Township, and Antoinette Remaley of North Huntingdon; and granddaughters, Lauren and Elyse (daughters of Dr. William and Regina Kardos). Josephine A. Kowalczk Koelsch, 80, formerly of Larimer, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in the William Penn Care Center. She was born Dec. 10, 1918, in Arona, a daughter of the late Joseph and Rosalee Ladarchek Kowalczk. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church of Irwin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne F. Koelsch in 1990; two brothers, John and Joseph Kowalczk; and two sisters, Ann Rice and Veronica Lancuski. Surviving are two sons, Wayne R. Koelsch and his wife, Kathleen, of Irwin and James W. Helen E. Kovacic, 76, of Trafford, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in the Huntingdon Ridge Nursing Center, Irwin. She was born Dec. 9, 1922, in Trafford, a daughter of the late James Sr. and Anna Maravec Kovacic. Prior to retirement, she was employed as a time studier for Westinghouse Electric. Donald M. ``Don'' Kuhn, 85, of New Alexandria, passed away Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born May 16, 1914, in Irwin, a son of the late Charles M. and Myrtle McIntyre Kuhn. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a control tower operator in the Army Air Corps. He retired from Kennametal in Latrobe after 27 years of service. He was a member of the Community United Presbyterian Church, New Alexandria, and the New Alexandria American Legion #652. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles; and a sister, Jean Shorthouse. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Etna Cook Kuhn; two daughters, Peggie Kuhn Bramble and husband, Donald, of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Karen Kuhn Liska and husband, Raymond, of South Yarmouth, Mass.; a son, Mike Kuhn and wife, Susan, of Norvelt; several nieces and nephews; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Virginia L. Lewis, of Jeannette, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born April 16, 1920, in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of the late Irvin and Nina Lynch Wescott. A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Jeannette, she was also a member of the Seneca Club and the AARP. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Lewis, in 1991; a sister, Margaret Huesdash; and three brothers, William, James, and Richard Wescott. Surviving are two sons, J. Richard Lewis and wife, Arlene, of Irwin, and Ronald R. Lavina Maricondi, 85, of Connellsville, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at her home. She was born June 14, 1914, in Connellsville, a daughter of the late Alex and Mary Pepperel Rivosecchi. She was a lifelong resident of Connellsville and was a graduate of Connellsville High School. Before retiring, she was the owner of the former Maricondi's Dairy Bar on the West Side of Connellsville. She was a member of St. Rita's Roman Catholic Church in Connellsville and its Christian Mothers. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, the Catholic Business and Professional Women, the Sons of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, the Connellsville American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and she was one of the original founders and member of St. Rita's Council #64. She also served as chairperson for the Connellsville Canteen during World War II. She is survived by a grandson, Louis J. Maricondi III and his wife, Amy, of Mt. Laurel, N.J.; a granddaughter, Melissa Allshouse and her husband, Kris, of Lake Forest, Calif.; four great-grandchildren, Louis J. Maricondi IV and Nicholas Maricondi, and Madison and Kasey Allshouse; and two nephews, Joseph Rivosecchi of Gibsonia and Thomas Rivosecchi of Indiana, Pa. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Louis John Maricondi; a son, Louis J. Jean L. Mickey, 73, of Level Green, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in her home. She was born Nov. 11, 1925, in Turtle Creek, a daughter of the late Francis ``French'' and Florence Johnston Horner. She was a volunteer member of the Association of Retarded Citizens of Westmoreland County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Michael Gordon Peterson, 19, of Hempfield Township, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999. He was born July 31, 1980, a son of Donovan and Judith Gordon Peterson of Greensburg RD9. EDWARD J. PUSHNIK
Edward J. Pushnik, 81, of Lebanon, Pa., died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at 9:45 a.m., at his residence. He was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Greensburg, a son of the late John and Mary (Segch) Pushnik. He was a retired restaurant and motel operator (Pushnik's Restaurant in Lebanon). He served with the U.S. Army in World War II, attaining the rank of staff sergeant with the 80th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars and two Clusters. He was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Lebanon. He came to Lebanon in the 1930s and began Pushnik's Restaurant with his brothers, James and Richard, in 1935. He was the president of Pushnik's Inc. and he served the community for 53 years until his retirement in 1988. He was a co-founder of the Buck-A-Cup Campaign for the Easter Seal Society. He was a local philanthropist, having donated to the Harrisburg Area Community College Library and the school scholarship fund. Survivors include a son, Mr. Edward J. Gundrum of Lebanon, Pa.; two grandchildren; a sister, Ann P. Gundrum of Lebanon; a brother, Mr. Richard F. Pushnik of Lebanon; and several nieces and nephews. Bernice J. Shelley, 68, of Daisytown, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in the Brownsville General Hospital. Born in Sutersville, July 26, 1931, she was a daughter of the late John and Alverda (Gibson) Knight. Mrs. Shelley worked in several area grocery stores in the produce department. She was Methodist by faith. She is survived by her husband, Charles W. Shelley; an aunt, Esther Laverne Sterner; a nephew, Larry Lindey; and four nieces. LLOYD FRANKLIN STAMY
Lloyd Franklin Stamy, 78, of Fox Chapel, on Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, after an extended illness. He was the beloved husband of 50 years of Barbara Lee Owens Stamy; devoted father of Lloyd Franklin Stamy Jr. of Shadyside, Stephen Reese Stamy of Shadyside, Cynthia Scott Stamy of London, England, and Susan Blythe Stamy Peterson (Mrs. Charles J. Peterson III) of Sullivan's Island, S.C.; and the proud grandfather of Caroline MacLauchlin Stamy of Shadyside and Hayden Grace Stamy of London, England. An eighth-generation Pennsylvanian, Mr. Stamy was born in Greenspring, Cumberland County, Jan. 16, 1921, and graduated from Shippensburg University in 1942 with a B.S. degree in business administration. Although he worked on several major construction projects, including the building of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the majority of his career involved the sale of heavy earth-moving equipment. He joined Beckwith Machinery Co. in 1944 and was named sales manager in 1949. In 1952, he founded the Lloyd F. Stamy Co., a construction equipment dealer and real estate developer. A deacon, elder, and Sunday school teacher at the Shadyside Presbyterian Church, Mr. Stamy was a member of Masonic Lodge 45, and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Valley of Pittsburgh, and a member of the Syria Shrine. He was also a member of the University Club and Wahnita Lodge Hunting and Fishing Camp. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at Shadyside Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Stashick, in 1980; a daughter, Joanne Stashick, in 1945; and the following brothers and sisters, Veronica Crapp, Andrew Rohall, George Rohall, and Mary Rayner. William A. Thomas Sr., O.D., 73, of Connellsville, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at home with his loving family at his side. He was born Jan. 17, 1926, in Uniontown, a son of the late George and Anna (Matthew) Thomas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel George; and a brother, Thomas J. Thomas. Dr. Thomas was an optometrist for over 45 years with his office located on Pittsburgh Street in Connellsville. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps (African Theater), attended Waynesburg College, was a graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, and was a member of St. Rita's Roman Catholic Church, Connellsville, and St. George Maronite Catholic Church, Uniontown. He was the president of the Newman Club, the Youth Center, the Lebanese Club, the Kiwanis Club, and the Lions Club; regional vice president of the Jaycees; vice president and director of the Pleasant Valley Country Club; a director of the Yough Valley National Bank, and the Scottdale Bank and Trust; and served on the Penn State University, Fayette Campus, Advisory Board. He was born in Lloydsville, Sept. 18, 1907, a son of the late Frederick and Caroline Green Woodward. He was a retired sales representative with the Limbach Co. in Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church and its Sunday school class. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean L. Woodward; two sons, Cortland D. of Horseheads, N.Y., and Bruce C. Woodward of Greensburg; seven granddaughters; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Caroline Harris of Syracuse, N.Y., and Pearl Frye of Irwin; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at noon in the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, 524 N. Main St., Greensburg, with the Rev. Scott Peterman officiating. Private entombment will follow in the Twin Valley Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be given to the Otterbein United Methodist Church.
RAYMOND J. ACKERMAN
Raymond J. Ackerman, 79, of New Alexandria, passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at the IHS at Mountain View, Unity Township. He was born June 23, 1920, in Youngstown, Pa., a son of the late Curtis and Ethel Losier Ackerman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II in Europe, Africa, and Sicily. He was retired from Agway Petroleum in Greensburg. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, New Alexandria. He also belonged to the New Alexandria Grange, American Legion Post 652, and the VFW Post 5821, Blairsville, and the AARP. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles E. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Marjorie Shaffor Ackerman; two sisters, Mary Millen and husband, John, and Jane Gyenes and husband, Joe; a sister-in-law, Diane Ackerman; and several nieces and nephews. Helen Harenski Dublino, 89, of Jeannette, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born June 25, 1910, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late John and Kathryn Reinke Harenski. Helen received her education at the University of Pennsylvania, and was employed as a dental hygienist and retired from the Sacred Heart School in Jeannette, where she was a teacher for many years. Helen also was part owner/operator of the former Dublino Dairy Bar of Jeannette. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church of Jeannette, the church's Rosary Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters of America, and the Amore E. Speranza No. 57. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Joseph J. Dublino, in 1998; five brothers, Anthony, Jesse, Paul, John, and Harry Harenski; and four sisters, Vera Harenski, Eleanore Miller, Irene McDonald, and Ursula Serro. Jeremiah Halstead, 74, of Greensburg, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at his home. He was born June 17, 1925, in Homewood, a son of the late Frank Halstead and Margaret Campbell Halstead Keller. Prior to retirement, he had been employed by the former Walworth Valve Co. of South Greensburg with 30 years of service, and later as a security guard for Hackney Security at UPS in New Stanton from 1981 to 1997. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the 14th Armored Division during World War II, and was a member of the American Legion Post 0945. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret F. Love Halstead, on Feb. 16, 1997; and his stepfather, Raymond Keller. Harry G. Henderson, 69, of Greensburg, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born June 4, 1930, in Greensburg, the son of the late Thomas and Violet Smith Henderson. He had worked for the former Overmyer Mould Co. in Greensburg, and later for the Thomas Drug Store in Greensburg. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Greensburg and past president of the Ushers Club of the church. He was a member and past master of the Westmoreland Lodge #518, and a former member of the Pittsburgh Consistory, the Syria Temple, and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Kestner Henderson; his daughter, Cathy Henderson of Greensburg; his son, Harry Glenn Henderson of Alexandria, Va.; and his two cousins, James Ghrist of Delmont and James Henderson of Youngwood. Sandra L. Neiderhiser, 59, of Ligonier, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at her home. She was born Jan. 7, 1940, in White, Pa., a daughter of Hazel White Keefer of White and the late Stanley Keefer. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 41 years, Wilbert M. ``Wib'' Neiderhiser; two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Kim) Kramer of Ligonier and Mrs. Stephen (Joye) Karidis of Pittsburgh; two sons, W. Mark and wife, Stacey Neiderhiser, of Ligonier, and Stanley M. and wife, Diana Neiderhiser, of Johnstown; five grandchildren, Bradley, Ethan, and Drew Neiderhiser, and Kalyn and Taryn Kramer; and a sister, Mrs. Harvey (Carol) Gowatski of Mt. Pleasant. Sandy had been employed as vice-president of the Commercial National Bank in Latrobe for over 23 years. She was a member of the Heritage United Methodist Church in Ligonier, a 10-year member and 1998 ``Woman of the Year'' of the Latrobe B.P.W., and served on the Women's Health Issues Task Force of Latrobe Area Hospital. She was a charter member and board member of the ``Open Hands Ministry'' and was a past director of the Westmoreland Mental Health Association. Sandy is remembered by her family as a loving, giving, and compassionate wife, mother, and grandmother. As Sandy battled ovarian cancer, even though she knew it was too late to save her life, she continued to try new experimental drugs and therapies in hopes that they might save other women afflicted with the same illness. She was born May 21, 1917, in Braddock, a daughter of the late Joseph and Julia Milhalkovich Smutny. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Thorofare Markets. She was a member of the St. Boniface Church of Penn and the church's Christian Mothers and Silver Threads group. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Samuel T. Slater, in 1989; and two brothers, Frank and Steve Smutny.
