James J. Close, 87, of Latrobe, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, in the Edgewood Nursing Center, Youngstown, Pa. He was born July 18, 1912, in Ligonier Township, a son of the late Milton F. and Mary Smitley Close. Prior to his retirement in 1974, he had been employed as a crane operator for 32 years with the former Vulcan Mold and Iron Co. in Latrobe. He was a member of the Ligonier Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and the Youngstown Social Club. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Eleanor Wisner Close; three daughters, Anna Wisner of Latrobe, Mrs. Richard (Sallie) Luther of Radcliff, Ky., and Mrs. Robert (Susie) Rodgers of Elizabethtown; two sons, Ronald and his wife, Kathy Wisner, of Ligonier and Wilbert Close of Harrisburg; 10 grandchildren, Iris, Jennifer, Rebecca, Frank, Jaimie, Amanda, Tammy, Robin, Marissa, and Amy; four great-grandchildren, Terrell, Tyler, Lydia, and Justin; a sister, Helen Savage, of Ligonier; a brother, George Close, of Latrobe; and a daughter-in-law, Ida Mae Close, of Ligonier. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Close; a sister, Dorothy Gindlesperger; and an infant daughter and infant son. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the J. BERYL (COLLINS) KALINA
Beryl (Collins) Kalina, 78, of Wilmerding, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999. A daughter of the late Albert and Stella (Echman) Collins. Wife of the late Henry Kalina Sr. Beloved mother of Henry Jr., Albert ``Hinie,'' Fred, David, and Timothy Kalina. Sister of Albert Collins, Elizabeth Parkye, Jean Franks, and the late Ginger Umbel, Florence Magnus and Lloyd. Also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. ANNA M. (COOPER) KENNEDY
Anna M. (Cooper) Kennedy, 97, of Export, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in AUH Forbes Regional, Monroeville. She was born Sept. 14, 1902, in Belfast, Ireland, a daughter of the late James and Mary (McGee) Cooper. Anna was a member of the Delmont Presbyterian Church; Eastern Star, Naomi Chapter, in Monaca; Ambridge Women's Club; and the Rebekah Lodge. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, J. Perry Kennedy. Anna is survived by her daughter, Mary ``Mel'' Esch and husband, George, of Export; three grandchildren, James K., Robert W., and Douglas E. Esch, and their families; and four great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Ashley, Karisa, and Joshua Esch. Family and friends will be received at the VAIA FUNERAL HOME INC. Lillian M. Sica, 64, of Wall, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999. Daughter of the late George Sr. and Mary (Secko) Sica. Beloved mother of Antoinette ``Toni'' Sica. MARJORIE ANNE WITHROW
Marjorie Anne Withrow, 71, of Greensburg, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at her home. She was born Nov. 14, 1927, in Greensburg, the daughter of the late George Jacob and Rowena Slaughter Myers. She was a retired nurse and social worker with the Westmoreland Regional Hospital. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Greensburg College Club, and was the secretary of the local AARP group in Greensburg. She is survived by her husband, James E. Withrow; her children, Barbara Myers of Pittsburgh, Diane Fives of Ligonier, and David Withrow of Pittsburgh; her brother, George Richard Myers, of Pleasant Hills; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Family and friends will be received at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, 524 N. Main St., Greensburg, Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Robert C. Wilson officiating. HAROLD H. ZIMMERMAN
Harold H. ``Sam'' Zimmerman, 66, of Ligonier, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born Dec. 31, 1932, in Ligonier Township, a son of the late James C. ``Chal'' and Bertha Harshbarger Zimmerman. Prior to his retirement in 1997, he had been employed for 34 years at Teledyne-Vasco in Derry Township. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, having served with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ligonier, a charter member of the Ligonier Valley Mounties Booster Club, and the Byers-Tosh #267 American Legion. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marcella M. Baloga Zimmerman; a daughter, Paula Zimmerman, of Las Vegas, Nev.; three sons, Mark S. and wife, Denise, Zimmerman of Ligonier RD2, H. Drew and wife, Rhonda, Zimmerman of Houston, Texas, and Eric V. and wife, Sue, Zimmerman of Derry; seven grandchildren; a son-in-law, Jimmy El Haddad, of Ligonier; three sisters, Catherine Kinsey of Ligonier, Twila Seitz of Ocala, Fla., and L. Jean Andre of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a brother, James E. ``Sam'' Zimmerman, of Ligonier. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Arnold Zimmerman. HAROLD E. STUBBS SR.
Harold E. Stubbs Sr., 89, of Washington Township (Mamont), died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in the H.C.R. Manor Care nursing home, Monroeville. He was born March 15, 1910, in Altoona, a son of the late Harry H. and Laura DeArmitt Stubbs. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as an electrician for Westinghouse Electric Corp. in East Pittsburgh, and also owned and operated Mamont Radio and Television Repair for a number of years. He was a member of St. John Baptist de La Salle Church in Delmont, and was a charter member of the Washington Township Lions Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen L. Ratay Stubbs, on March 27, 1999; and a sister, Margaret Kulberg. Survived by three sons, Gerald E. Stubbs and his wife, Peggy, of Delmont, Kenneth E. Stubbs and his wife, Karen, of New Kensington, and Harold E. ``Hod'' Stubbs Jr. and his wife, Diana, of Penn Hills; a brother, Ralph Stubbs, of Fairless Hills, Pa.; a sister, Beatrice Church, of Beltsville, Md.; and nine grandchildren. WILLIAM P. MOYLES
William P. Moyles, 69, a lawyer and businessman, died at his home in Sewickley Heights, Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, from complications resulting from Parkinson's Disease. Born June 1, 1930, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was educated at Xavier High School, New York, Georgetown University, and Harvard Law School. From 1957 to 1967, he practiced law in New York and left to become head of the legal department at Control Data in Minneapolis, Minn. In 1973, he came to Pittsburgh as a Gulf corporate executive until the Gulf takeover, after which he became president of the Maverick Fund, an L.P.O. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Moyles; three daughters, Virginia St. Pierre of Alexandria, Va., Margaret Curran of Philadelphia, and Frances Fisher of San Francisco, Calif.; a sister, Mary Jane Murray; two brothers, Philip and Kevin Moyles; and seven grandchildren. Family suggests, in lieu of flowers, to send memorial contributions to the Movement Research Disorder Foundation, Department of Neurology, The Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, 44195. He served as 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force in 1952 to 1954. He was a member of the Board of the School for the Blind. Also, he was a member of the Allegheny Country Club, Sewickley; the Duquesne Club, Pittsburgh; and the Rolling Rock Club, Ligonier. THEODORE T. ZIEGENFUS
Dr. Theodore T. Ziegenfus, 57, of Natrona Heights, formerly of Latrobe, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in Sewickley Valley Hospital. He was born March 16, 1942, in Latrobe, a son of the late Theodore D. and Armella R. Bridge Ziegenfus. Dr. Ziegenfus was a graduate of St. Vincent College, Latrobe. He received his Master of Arts in Biology and his Doctor of Philosophy in Botany-Genetics from West Virginia University. Postdoctoral appointments included: North Texas State University, Denton, Texas, and Wilmington Medical Center, Wilmington, Delaware, in Human Cytogenetics. Since 1970, he had been an Associate Professor of Biology at the Pennsylvania State University, New Kensington campus. While at Penn State, he was chairman of Commonwealth College Senate, a University senator and a member of the Strategic Planning Committee at University Park. In 1998 he was chairman of the Penn State, New Kensington faculty senate. He was the corresponding secretary for the Pennsylvania Academy of Science, and exhibits chairman. He was the author of several publications. Professional societies included the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Genetic Association, American Institute of Biological Sciences, American Society of Human Genetics, Botanical Society of America, Genetics Society of America, West Virginia Academy of Sciences, Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences, Society of Sigma Xi, and Phi Epsilon Phi. He was selected for inclusion in Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Ted actively served in the Boy Scouts of America for over four years. His major accomplishments included becoming an Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver recipient, and Vigil Honor from Kiasutha Lodge #57, Order of the Arrow. Ted was a member of the Greater Pittsburgh Council, Boy Scouts of America, and was a recipient of the William D. Boyce District Award of Merit, and Outstanding Scoutmaster Award. He was awarded the Commissioner Award, and was a James E. West Fellow from the Greater Pittsburgh Council. As a scouter, Ted has served as Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, District Training Chairman, District Commissioner, and Assistant Council Commissioner. He also had provided leadership to the Junior Leader Training Conference for more than 1,000 youths. He was an ``Owl'' with both the Boy Scout Wood Badge and Cub Scout training courses. He served on the Council Executive Committee for Leadership Development. He also served on the Council Youth Protection Training Committee. Ted attended the Philmont Scout Ranch for many training courses, as well as a trek. Ted also participated in three National Scout jamborees, as well as visiting four other jamborees. Both of Ted's sons are Eagle Scouts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Elaine Ziegenfus. Survivors include two sons, Theodore F. Ziegenfus and his wife, Cynthia, of Butler and Karl A. Ziegenfus and his wife, Christine, of Penn Hills; a daughter, Susan A. Ziegenfus, of Latrobe; a brother, Richard P. Ziegenfus and his wife, Gina, of Ligonier; two stepgrandchildren, Brandi Smith and Brooke Bailey; and his former wife, Dorothy A. Zimmerman. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. WILLIAM CHARLES KOENIG
William Charles Koenig, 72, of Espyville, Pa., on Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999. Husband of Mary Jane Dykeman Koenig of Linesville, Pa. Father of Elaine Oesterle of Hampton Township, William W. Koenig of Cranberry, and Cheryl Clark of Nags Head, N.C. Brother of John Koenig of Gibsonia and Sue Sands of Perrysville. Also survived by four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. JANET M. McNAMARA
Janet M. McNamara, 42, of West Mifflin, born April 25, 1957, in Penn Hills, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was the daughter of Merle Robert Shetter of New Alexandria and the late Phyllis Maines Shetter. Janet was an employee of Sears, Century III, where she worked in the children's clothing department. She was a member of the Community of the Crucified One, Homestead. In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Timothy H. McNamara; two brothers, Harold Shetter of Saltsburg and Bruce Shetter of New Alexandria; her father-in-law, Howard McNamara, with whom she resided; and many nieces and nephews. ANNETTE M. GIRARD OLSON
Annette M. Girard Olson, 37, of Elizabeth, Pa., born April 3, 1962, in Pontiac, Mich., passed away in UPMC McKeesport, Monday, Nov. 8, 1999. Daughter of Kathleen (Shea) Girard of Roseville, Mich., and the late Robert Girard. She was a personnel assistant with the Department of Energy at the Bettis Plant. She was a member of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church and a U.S. Navy veteran. Also, she was a member of the American Legion Glassport Post #443. In addition to her mother, survivors include her husband, Joseph B. Olson; two sons, Joseph R. Olson and Nicholas A. Olson, both at home; two sisters, Joyce Girard and Nora Stringer, both of Roseville, Mich.; three brothers, Robert Girard, Daniel Girard, and Mark Girard, all of Roseville, Mich.; and nieces and nephews. CARL T. POTTHOFF
Carl T. ``Pop-Pop'' Potthoff, 90, of Bath, Pa., formerly of Latrobe, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, in Muhlenburg Hospital, Bethlehem, Pa. He was born Nov. 12, 1908, in Latrobe, a son of the late John and Anna Hankey Potthoff. He was a member of the Holy Family Church, Latrobe, and its Holy Name Society. He was an insurance agent for American General Insurance Co. for 30 years, before retiring in 1975. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Knights of St. George, the Point Phillip Rod & Gun Club, and the Petersville Rod & Gun Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy E. (Nessler) Potthoff; two sisters, Mercedes Potthoff Higgins and Regina M. Potthoff; and two brothers, Alfred and Vincent Potthoff. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Cavallo of Bath, with whom he resided, and Rosemary Morgan of Oneonta, N.Y.; a brother, John ``Jack'' Potthoff of Latrobe; a sister, Anna Mary Zink of North Carolina; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. JEAN CLARE GALBRAITH MURPHY
Jean Clare Galbraith Murphy, 97, of New Florence RD1, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at IHS of Greater Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Born Aug. 10, 1902, in St. Clair Township, a daughter of the late John G. and Maude (Dick) Galbraith. Also preceded in death by her husband, G. Albert Murphy, on July 10, 1978; a sister, Helen Luther; brothers, John, James, Alan, and Calvin Galbraith; and a great-granddaughter, Beth Ann Decker. Survived by these children, Robert, John and wife, Margaret, James and wife, Donna, and David and wife, Ingrid, all of New Florence RD1, Doris, wife of Thomas Buchleitner, of Latrobe and Mary, wife of Eugene Decker, of Ebensburg; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lois Davis, of New Florence RD1. She was a lifelong member of West Fairfield United Presbyterian Church and subsequently a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, New Florence. She was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a charter member of West Fairfield Community Center and Laurel Ridge Grange. LOUISE ZGAINER
Louise Zgainer, 97, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Kane Regional Center, Ross. She was born July 25, 1902, in Yugoslavia, and worked as a seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gabriel Zgainer. Surviving are a son, John Yanzek Jr.; and a daughter, Anne Wojciechowski. Also, grandchildren, John Yanzek Jr. and Joan Ward; and four great-grandchildren. There will be no visitation. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale. Interment will be private. DAVID J. SAGINAW
David J. Saginaw, 68, of McCandless Township, on Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999. Husband of Eileen Behr Saginaw. Father of Kimberly Jean Gettemy of Spring, Texas, and David John Saginaw II of Huntington, N.Y. Grandfather of David Dominick Gettemy, Connor Christopher Gettemy, and Joseph David Saginaw. Mr. Saginaw was a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Army. THOMAS N. SHAFER
Thomas N. Shafer, 71, of Sun City West, Ariz., died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999. He was born Nov. 27, 1927, in Pittsburgh, and moved to Arizona in 1996 from Miami, Fla. He was a resident of Greensburg, prior to serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II. Following his discharge from the Navy, he was a news broadcaster and director, and a commentator for radio and television stations in the Pittsburgh area. He moved to Miami, where he was a veteran radio and television news reporter and director, before retiring. He was a member of the Christian Science Church. Surviving are his wife, Hilda Shafer; and a brother, John Holland, both of Sun City West, Ariz.; a daughter, Karen Stancato, of Belle Vernon; a son, Timothy Shafer, of Conway, S.C.; and six grandchildren. A private memorial service will be conducted at sea off the coast of Miami, Fla., on Friday, Nov. 19.

MARY JANICE WARD
Mary Janice Ward, 76, of Redstone Highlands, Greensburg, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Redstone Highlands. Born March 30, 1923, in Rockford, Ill., she was a daughter of the late John A. and Mary (Lander) Nelson. She graduated from Oakmont High School in 1941 and from Allegheny College in 1945; married John V. Ward in St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Oakmont, in 1945, and settled in Oakmont as a housewife and mother. She was active in the Oakmont Junior Women's Club, the Oakmont Drama Club, the Girl Scouts, and was a Sunday school teacher at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. From 1971 to 1974 she lived in Ulsan, Korea, with her husband, who was on a work assignment for Gulf Oil. She lived in Olympia, Wash., and Arvada, Colo., before moving back to Pennsylvania in 1982. She is survived by her husband, John V. Ward, of Redstone Highlands Apartments, Greensburg; a son, John N. Ward Esq. and his wife, Patricia H. Ward, of Unity Township; a daughter, Martha Patricia Scaltsas and her husband, Theodore Scaltsas, Ph.D., of Edinburgh, Scotland; seven grandchildren, John R. Ward, Matthew P. Ward, Meredith L. Ward, Daniel N. Ward, Katherine B. Ward, Jeffrey P. Ward, and Lydia S. Scaltsas; a sister, Martha Patricia Bonidy and her husband, Joseph K. Bonidy, of Greensburg and Ocala, Fla.; and a cousin, Eddie G. Anderson and his wife, Lucille Anderson, of Lakewood, Colo. Family and friends will be received at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, 524 N. Main St., Greensburg, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. for procession to the Unity Chapel, Unity Township, for services to be held at noon with the Rev. Steven Heintz officiating. Interment will be in Unity Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Latrobe Area Hospital Foundation, Westmoreland Hospice, or Redstone Highlands.
