Gladys Olive Gentry
Gladys Olive Gentry, 82, passed away in Cedarville, Calif. on Jan. 21, 2003. She was a former New Pine Creek business owner.
She was born on Feb. 15, 1920 to Violet Delta (McKune) and Oatman Oliver Vincent in New Pine Creek, Calif. She graduated from cosmetology college in Redding, Calif. and married James H. Cooper on June 15, 1938. They moved to New Pine Creek and built their home. They owned Cooper’s Drive-In for 10 years. James passed away in 1961.
On April 17, 1964 Gladys married John Lair Gentry. Gladys owned and operated Gladys’ Beauty Shop from 1964 until 1990, when she retired and moved to Cedarville with her husband.
Mrs. Gentry was active within the community. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary 7888, The Cedarville Community Church, was a precinct clerk for the Modoc County Election Board and a supporter of the local Blood Bank drives.
She was an avid gardner, enjoyed crocheting and was talented with her knitting machine. She made many baby items that were sought after at community sales.
She was preceded in death by her sister, June and her parents.
She is survived by her husband, John Gentry of Cedarville; eldest son Jim Cooper and wife Ginny of Albany; son Richard Cooper and wife Kay of Spokane, Wash.; daughter Lynne Minto and husband Jerry of Cedarville; three sisters, Rose, Geneva and Alice and brother Otis; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
The services were conducted at the Cedarville Community Church on Friday, Jan. 24. the Rev. Dr. Ben Zandstra officiated. Interment
was at the New Pine Creek Cemetery.

Dorothy May Scruggs
Dorothy May Scruggs, 95, passed away at the Lake District Long Term Care Facility on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003.
Dorothy was born to Andrew and Mary Karr Miller at Brazito, Mo. on Sept. 13, 1907. She married John Leuther Scruggs at California, Mo. in 1927 and he preceded her in death in 1983. After her marriage she made her home in Norwood, Mo. until 1933 when they moved to Los Angeles, Calif. She lived in various places in California until finally settling in Sacramento, Calif. in 1946. She moved to Bandon in 1998 to be close to her daughter and then in 1999 she came to Lakeview to be near her son.
She was actively involved in the Lakeview First Presbyterian Church. Her hobbies included water skiing, sewing, ceramics, crocheting, camping, hunting, fishing, cooking and gardening. Her greatest source of enjoyment though, was her family.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Janice Scruggs of Lakeview; daughter, Penny L. Jones of Folsom, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Bob Reimers of Cascade, Wisc. and Anna May and Barry White of Townsend, Mont.; grandchildren, Janine Simms, Tom Scruggs, William Scruggs, Margaret Scruggs, Andrew Scruggs, Cecilia Murrey, Scott Reimers, Mitchel Jones, Timothy Jones, Mark Jones, Sherry Wicks, Dawn Shover and John Shover; 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at the Sierra Hills Memorial Park in Sacramento Jan. 29 with the Rev. Dan St. Clair officiating. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian church in Lakeview on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Bob Badgley officiating.

Rocklin “Rocky” James Lathim
Rocklin “Rocky” James Lathim, 48, passed away Jan. 15, 2003 at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.
Rocky was born March 2, 1954 in Modesto, Calif. to Dale and Jesse (Reeves) Lathim. The family moved to Boise, Idaho after he was born.
In 1964, Rocky was legally adopted by his grandparents, Howard and Pearl Lathim, with whom he lived with throughout his school years in Boise.
Rocky joined the U.S. Army on Oct. 19, 1973 and served until Sept. 17, 1975 with an honorable discharge. He re-joined the Army on Oct. 14, 1976 and was once again honorably discharged on Dec. 21, 1977, with the rank of corporal. Rocky was a highly decorated Veteran, and was very proud to have served his country. he will be buried in the National Cemetery with full honors.
Rocky was a long-time member of the Christmas Valley community. He had various occupations, which varied from working for the ZX Ranch, to owning and operating a hog farm. He was very skilled welder, logger, and fire wood cutter. He greatly enjoyed the great outdoors and all that went with it. In his younger years, motorcycles, especially Harleys and BMWs were his passion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and a brother, John Howard Lathim.
He is survived by two nieces, Cami and Kimberly; two nephews, Jason and Zane; and a group of cousins.
A memorial service will be open to the public on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post 45, 52532 Drafter Rd. in La Pine with a Potluck to follow.

Virginia B. Munroe
Virginia B. Munroe, 81, passed away in Covington, Ky. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003.
Munroe was born March 24, 1921 in Fairport, Calif. to Tom and Bertha Ballard. She grew up on a farm, one mile from the town of New Pine Creek. She attended eight years of grade school under the tutorship of Cora Follett and four years of high school with Phil Samples as principal of the two teacher, two room school.
She grew up, married and left New Pine Creek in 1939. She lived in Portland and felt that is where she wanted to live forever. Circumstances prevented this and she and her family moved to Alturas, Calif. In 1960 she moved to Sacramento, Calif. where she worked and retired from McClelland AFB as an industrial radiographer.
Virginia was active in the Native Daughters of the Golden West, The Women of the Moose, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and her church. She loved to travel, play cards and dance. These became her favorite pastimes in her retirement and were fondly shared by her dear friend and special love, Harold Ferrell.
Virginia loved life, her friends and dearly loved her family. She adored her children as well as any child that needed a helping hand or a home. She looked forward to “Going Home” every year and for eternity.
Survivors include her two sons, Tom Gardner of Carson City, Nev. and Jim Crudele of Eugene; daughter, Barbara Rathbun of Burlington, Ky.; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, her sister, Peggy Pauline of Washington and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Feb. 1 at Ousley Osterman Huffstutter Funeral Chapel will burial following in the family plot at the New Pine Creek Cemetery.

Edith Jannett Moore
Edith Jannett Moore, 76, passed away at her Christmas Valley home on Monday, March 17, 2003 from a heart attack.
Edith was born to Lyle and Mary (Thompkins) Hertz at El Cajon, Calif. on April 12, 1926. She grew up in southern and central California and graduated from High School in Sacramento. After high school she worked as an airplane mechanic at McClellan Field until she married Jack Moore at Reno, Nev. on July 22, 1946. They moved to Oregon in 1950 and lived in various places before settling in Christmas Valley in 1979.
Edith had a real passion for photography and was never without her camera. She loved listening to country western music, her favorite being the Sons of the Pioneers. she enjoyed all outdoor activities, oil painting, bird watching, horses and her collection of TV movies she had taped. Most of all she dearly loved her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ruth and brothers, Buddy and Donald.
She is survived by her husband, Jack of Christmas Valley; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Kathleen Moore of LaGrande and Clint and Beverly Moore of Aurora; sisters, Hazel Watson of Citrus Heights, Calif., Elsie George of Christmas Valley and Betsyann Johnson of Reno, Nev.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service was held at the Christmas Valley Community Center on March 22. Committal was held at the Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point on March 24.

Hazel Leah Powell Patterson
Hazel Leah Powell Patterson, 93, passed away Friday, March 21, 2003 at the Lake District Long-Term Care Facility in Lakeview. She was surrounded by her family who loved her dearly.
Hazel was born Jan. 8, 1910 in Gooding, Idaho to Marvin and Bertha Studyvin Thomason. She was raised and educated in Gooding. She married Charles Powell Feb. 25, 1926 in Gooding. He preceded her in death on May 8, 1976. Hazel married Harry Patterson on Feb. 5, 1979. He preceded her in death April 16, 2002.
She was also preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Tiera Baggett; cousins, Mary Yonker of Fostoria, Ohio, Mary Harris of Boise, Idaho Bonnie Hopper of Jerome, Idaho and Ruth Mecham of Jerome.
Hazel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Audrey and Keith Baggett of Lakeview; grandsons and their wives, Charlie and Teri Baggett of Medford, Bob and Sandy Baggett of Bend and David and Dorothy Baggett of Kalispell, Mont.; granddaughter and her husband, Diane and Mark Gerber of Sterling, Alaska; great-grandchildren, Brendan Baggett, Justin Baggett, Lydia Baggett and Samual Gerber; stepchildren, Alan and Leona Patterson of Gooding, Donna and Gene Egeler of Gooding, Dean Patterson and Friend Pauline of Carson City, Nev. and Dale and Vangie of Pico Rivera, Calif; many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial mass was offered Tuesday, March 25 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Lakeview with the Rev. Raymond Hopp officiating. Vault interment
will be private at the family plot in Gooding.

Randall Lee Harmon
Randall Lee Harmon, 44, died in a helicopter accident on the Colville Indian Reservation, Wash., July 25, 2003 while fighting the McGinnis Flats fire in northeastern Washington.
Randy was born to H.D. and Janice (Stone) Harmon at Lakeview June 8, 1958. He grew up in Lakeview and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1977. While in school he was active in the Future Farmers of America and Rough Riders Horseman Club.
After graduation he entered the Marine Reserves and then served in the Army Reserves for a total of six duty years.
On Aug. 25, 1979, Randy married his high school sweetheart, Linda Gerlits and daughter Casandra was born in 1983 and son Logan was born in 1985.
Randy had many occupations in his life. He worked on a ranch, drove log truck and drove for a trucking company. He learned how to fly airplanes then decided to get training to become a helicopter pilot.
After he got his helicopter pilot’s license, he began flying for various helicopter operations. This included stints as flying off the coast of Mexico spotting tuna for commercial fishing and oil exploration in Papua, New Guinea. His jobs also took him to Burma, Taiwan, Singapore and other overseas locations. He also worked in helicopter logging and fire fighting. In total Randy logged more than 9,500 flight hours.
Randy spent many days and weeks apart from his family. A quote from his diary reflects his feelings for his family: “God watch over my family, they are all I have. I love Linda, Casandra and Logan. Remember me when I’m gone. You are the BEST!”
He was a loving and devoted husband, father, son and brother.
Randy had many talents and hobbies. He loved snow skiing, woodworking, hiking, weight lifting, dirt bike riding and auto mechanics with a love for classic cars. He enjoyed timber carnivals and participating in destruction derbies. He loved horse riding and rodeos. He also designed his dream home in Grants Pass.
Randy is survived by his wife, Linda, and children, Logan and Casandra of Grants Pass; mother, Janice Creel of Grants Pass; father and stepmother, H.D. and Norma Harmon of Richland; brother, Ryan Harmon of Grants Pass; sister and brother-in-law, Robin and Doug Sammis of Grants Pass; sisters-in-law, Pamela Schiele and Patty Gerlits; sisters-in-law and husbands, Kathy and Roger McCarthy, Frances and Jim Turman, Butch and Mindy Gerlits, Barbara and Bill Desser, Becky and Randy Curnow and Sheila and Jeff Bennett; nieces and nephews, Lance, Travis, Jesse, Ryan, Desiree, Stacey, Nathan, Tyler, Ashley, Dustin, Lee , Andrea, Megan and Crystal.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Bob Harmon.
A memorial celebration of his life was held Tuesday, July 29 at the Apostolic Faith Church, Grants Pass.
Graveside services will be Thursday, July 31 at 10 a.m. at the Westside Cemetery, Lakeview. A gathering of friends will immediately follow at the Elks Lodge in Lakeview.

Laurena Belle Riggs
Laurena Belle Riggs, 95, of Bend, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003 of natural causes.
Laurena was born to Manley and Kitty (Hanan) Currier in Paisley. She grew up and attended school in Paisley. She married Everett Riggs in May 1925 in Lakeview.
She and her husband owned and operated a cattle ranch near Paisley for many years. A member of the Methodist Church in Paisley, she also was an avid quilter and enjoyed crocheting and cooking.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1972, her parents, a son and a grandson.
She is survived by a daughter, Lauren Schmidt of Summer Lake, four grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Robert St. Andrassy
Robert St. Andrassy, 52, died at Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla., on Sunday, July 13, 2003.
Robert was born to Leonard and Dorothy St. Andrassy at Penpicton, B.C., Canada on July 7, 1951. He spent his childhood years in Abbotsford, B.C. and was very active in school sports, especially track and rugby. He continued his education receiving a bachelor of arts degree in business management from the University of Minnesota and masters degree in coaching science from the University of Victoria, B.C.
He was the coach for the Abbotsford Royals Track Club youth track team from 1986 to 1994. he had been the general manager of Check Point Ranchers of Minneapolis, Minn. deputy brand inspector for British Columbia Department of Agriculture, worked for Superior Livestock of Saskatchewan, ranch manager for Cross V Cattle Company of Lakeview, manager of the Picabo Ranch in Picabo, Idaho, and most recently manager of the J Bear Ranch in Howie-in-the-Hills.
He loved music, opera, reading and his beloved pets, Mike, Bubba and Furball. Bob gave from his heart as a husband and a man and will be deeply missed by those he leaves behind.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Alicia St. Andrassy of Hailey, Idaho; step children, Patrick, Megan and Sharron Bussa of Hailey; brother and sister-in-law, John and Julie St. Andrassy of Abbotsford, B.C.; nephews, Jaret and Justin St. Andrassy of Abbotsford; uncle and aunt, Joe and Follie Scarfo of West Vancouver, B.C.; cousin, Lisa Scarfo of Whistler, B.C.,; and lifelong friends Bob McGill of Ione, Calif., Dick Hubman of Medford, Shane Whiteman of Hobson, Mont., and Buddie Kramer of Denver, Colo.
A memorial service will be held at Desert Rose Funeral Chapel, Saturday, Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dan St. Clair officiating.
Veda Faye Wells
Veda Faye Wells, 87, a resident of The Dalles died at a local care facility on Saturday, July 19, 2003.
Veda was born November 14, 1915, in Pine Creek Canyon, Calif., the youngest of three children to Charles Jacob and Mattie Ethel (Metzker) Cook. She had two older brothers, Emery and Raymond. She attended State Line Elementary School and in 1939 she graduated from Modoc High School, New Pine Creek Branch. She was on the Women’s basketball team in high school and was also involved in 4-H.
December 24, 1936, she married Romaine Methvin and they resided in Willow Ranch, Calif. They had one son, Kenneth Dwain, Veda and Romaine later separated.
June 7, 1944, Veda married Howard C. Wells. Howard brought three children to this union; Howard Jr., Gracye and Janice. The family lived in Fairport, Calif. The family expanded with the birth of Virgil, Eugene, twin boys, Gordon and Norman, Virginia and Robert.
Veda was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Goose Lake and served as treasurer for many years.
She was a master gardener, growing huge amounts of corn, beans, squash and anything else to feed her brood. When her family was at home, she preserved her produce and butchered beef, hogs and chickens for the freezer.
She enjoyed reading, quilting, dogs and cats, walking and collecting pretty rocks. She acted as mother not only to her own children but any other child who found his way into her home. She instilled in her children a tremendous work ethic balanced with a need to have time for fun.
Veda is survived by her children and their spouses, Ken and Laura, McMinnville; Virgil and Marie, Klamath Falls; Gordon and Joyce, Texarkana, Ark., Norman and Nancy, The Dalles; Robert, New Pine Creek; Grayce Balkam, Janice and Pat Evers, all of Pleasanton, Calif. and Virginia McCool, Texarkana, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, and her sons, Eugene and Howard Jr. and her brothers.
Graveside services were held at New Pine Cemetery on Monday, July 21.

Millie M. Armstrong
Millie M. Armstrong, 78, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died May 18, 2003.
Millie was born in Lakeview Oct. 23, 1925, to Jerry and Iva Cleland Barry. She had five siblings and attended school in Plush, Lakeview and Alturas.
She married Roger Armstrong, also a Lakeview resident, Sept. 4, 1945. After living in Lakeview, Burns and Baker, the Armstrongs settled in Pendleton in 1959, where Millie remained until joining her children in Arizona in 1998.
Millie is survived by her son, Jerry Armstrong, Pinetop, Ariz.; daughter, Karen Anderson, Phoenix, Ariz.; brother, Jerry Barry of Salem two granddaughters, Natalie and Nicole Armstrong of Pinetop .
Millie leaves behind hundreds of lifelong friends and family who are in awe of her many accomplishments, great sense of humor and love of people and knowledge.
In keeping with her wishes, Millie was cremated and will have her ashes scattered in Oregon. Remembrance donations may be made in her name to the American Lung Association, www.lungusa.org.
Daren Ray Carter
Daren Ray Carter, 81, died Feb. 20, 2004, at his home in Lakeview, He was born to Floyd and Helen (McKeen) Carter on April 5, 1922, in Three Rivers, Calif. (a small town in the foothills of central California).
Daren attended Three Rivers Grade School and Wood Lake High School. During summer vacations he worked in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks packing people into the high country, among which were such notables as Slim Pickens and Levi Stratton. After completing high school Daren went to work on a ranch in Elder Wood, Calif.
Daren enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and served in combat in the South Pacific. He was awarded the good conduct medal, WWII service medal and Sharpshooter rifleman.
He married Frances Lucille Kimberling and three sons were born to this union; Daren Ray Carter, Jr., Donald James Carter and David Floyd Carter. After the death of Frances, Daren married Mary Barbara Holloway in Visalia, Calif. In 1967 they moved to Lakeview, where they owned a ranch in Drews Valley. After leaving the ranch, Daren worked for Jim Alves and then for Chuck Kelley until he was forced to retire in 1998 because of health problems.
He was a member of the Eagles Lodge for over 30 years.
After the death of Mary, Daren married his present wife, Re. He loved camping out with Re and sharing the meals together that Re cooked over the camp fire and the clear nights when the stars looked almost close enough to touch. Together they enjoyed Paradise (the Chuck Kelley Ranch) and the natural beauty that abounded with cows, coyotes, bald eagles, red tail hawks, rabbits, rock chucks, antelope and deer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Helen; wives, Frances and Mary and son, Donald Ray Carter.
Daren is survived by his wife, best friend and companion, Re Carter of Lakeview; mother-in-law, Beulah Reid Rector; sons, Daren Carter, Jr., of Cottonwood, Calif. and David Floyd Carter of Eugene; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Howard Carter of Billings, Mont.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
