Henry “Hank” M. Hanlin
Henry “Hank” M. Hanlin, 72, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at the Lake District Hospital in Lakeview.
Hank was born in Cripple Creek, Colo., March 6, 1932 to Helen O’Keefe and Edgar Willis Hanlin. He lived his early years in small towns around Denver, Colo. His family moved to Marysville, Calif., when Hank was in the seventh grade. There he met and eventually married his wife.
Hank served as a communications lineman in Korea during the conflict. He was honorably discharged from the Army in January 1954 and married Gayle Ann Eichelberger June 13, 1954. They were married for 50 years and had four daughters.
Hank earned bachelors and masters degrees in art, plus a teaching credential at California State University, Sacramento. He taught in the River Delta Unified School district in California for 28 years. Although specifically trained in art, Hank taught whatever was needed in his district including art, crafts, math, physical education and English. He retired in 1992 and relocated to Lakeview in 1994.
Hank enjoyed many different art media. At different times, he worked with oil paint, pastels, watercolors, pen and ink, ceramics, stained glass, silver casting, metal works and many other mediums. He enjoyed tinkering. Of his lifelong hobbies was restoring old cars. He bought his 1926 Chevy Roadster “Junior” in high school and restored it several times. He used to drive his high school friends around for gas money. This kept gas in his car for the week. “Junior” was featured in many parades throughout the years. Hank’s girls would often say, “My daddy can do anything.”
Hank never stopped learning. The last months of his life he learned to use computer drawing and photo editing software, which were completely new art mediums for him. His most recent project was using coffee cups to display his art and photography.
Hank’s philosophy was to look for the humor in all situations. His cartoons reflected this philosophy. Hank loved sharing jokes and stories with family and friends. He especially enjoyed early morning coffee with his buddies, which he dubbed the Dinosaur Coffee Club. Charter members received personalized coffee cups created by Hank.
Hank did not allow trials to defeat his good humor. He and Gayle Ann faced her battle with cancer this past year with courage and humor. When Hank was no longer able to walk, he rode his little red scooter to Town. Always he held to his life philosophies, “Don’t take yourself too seriously,” and “Find the humor in every situation.”
