Betty J. (Jean) Rieman
Born: February 24, 1923
Passed: December 27, 2006 at the age of 83.
Betty was born the daughter of Edna and Roy Rowell of Waukesha, WI. Betty graduated from Waukesha Elementary and High School in 1940. She actively participated in sports growing up and was an avid Green Bay Packer Fan. She entered Mount Sinai School of Nursing (Milwaukee, WI) at the age of 17. The curriculum only allowed the nurses out one night a month. Betty thought she was in jail during her whole nurses training, but did graduate in 1943. After finishing nurses training, she worked at Allis Chalmers who made the super-chargers for the B-29 World War II bomber. The B-29 was the airplane that dropped the Atom Bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Upon Japan’s surrender, the next day Betty was out of a job.
Betty then went to work (1945) at the emergency room at Johnson Hospital, where she met Bob (Robert W. Rieman). Bob was the night shift physician at Johnson Hospital. They both worked many night shifts together--“THINGS DEVELOPED!” Remember- Dick (Richard Robert) did not show-up until 1949.
Betty and Bob were married March 29, 1946 by Bob’s father in a Lutheran Church located in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Shortly after the wedding Bob was inducted into the US Army as a physician. By November of 1946 Bob was sent to Panama working for the Canal Zone. Betty followed Bob to Panama 2 months later. Bob and Betty spent two years in Panama giving sailors inoculations so the sailors could survive in the Pacific. Betty also worked as a nurse giving care to hospitalized patients. They were discharged from the service in the spring of 1948.
In June of 1948 Bob and Betty started their life together in Ottawa, Illinois. Bob joined the Ottawa Medical Center with two other physicians (Patrick Twohey and Del McKinney). Betty worked part time with Bob at the center. Betty was involved with many civic activities-- PTA, election judging, Pink Ladies, the County Nursing Board and the Red Cross. Betty and Bob had two boys Richard Robert (1949) and William Roy (1951). Betty and Bob had countless friends during their active/growing years. These Friends have been a pillar of strength for the Rieman Family through their lives.
In December of 1979 Betty and Bob moved to Winter Haven, Florida. Betty enjoyed golfing, swimming, and various card games--especially Bridge. Their group of friends grew even stronger during their semi-retirement years. Often visits from Dick and Bill’s families were major highlights during this period for Betty and Bob. They traveled to Africa, Europe, Alaska and the Galapagos Islands during this time as well.
Betty moved with her husband Bob in late October 2005 to retirement village, Canterbury-On-The-Lake in Waterford, MI to be close to their sons. Once again many more new acquaintances were established. A year after the move, Betty was told she had a growing lesion in her lung. It was decided by Betty and her family not to perform any major treatments and to pursue comfort measures only. Betty spent the last month of her life in the caring hands of Dick and Karen Rieman with much help from Bill and his fiancée, Peg.
Betty is survived by her husband Robert William Rieman, Brother Donald Rowell (San Francisco), her two sons Richard Robert Rieman and William Roy Rieman, and her three grandsons Jeffrey William Rieman, Jonathan Robert Rieman, and James Edward Rieman.
