Lena R. DeMoss

Lena R. DeMoss, 80, of Live Oak, passed away Jan. 10, 2004, in the Lake City Medical Center, Lake City, after a short illness. The Lott, Texas native has been a resident of Live Oak since 1971, having moved here from Brevard County. She was an active member of St. Frances Xavier Catholic Church, a member of the Women's Guild, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Auxiliary member of the Air Force Sergeant's Association, Retired Enlisted Association, D.A.V., and was an aircraft welder during World War II. She helped build the B-24 airplanes.

Survivors include: her husband of 60 years, Robert R. DeMoss Sr., Live Oak; one son, Robert R. "Bob" and Christine DeMoss Jr., Live Oak; one daughter, Marlene and Paul Williams, Palm Bay; one sister, Clara Burnett, Rockdale, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Chuck DeMoss, Jim DeMoss, Anne Williams, Keith DeMoss, Ginger Hoerner, David Williams, Tom Williams, John Williams, Jamie Williams, Laura Williams and Robbie DeMoss; five great-grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She was predeceased by: her parents, William and Elizabeth Rummel; three brothers; and four sisters.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. today, Jan. 14, at the St. Frances Xavier Catholic Church, Live Oak with the Rev. Mike Pendergraft officiating. Interment will follow in the Live Oak Cemetery.

Aubrey Earnest Jones Jr.

Aubrey Earnest Jones Jr., 55, of Bloomingdale, Ga., passed away on Jan. 10, 2004 at his home. Born in Suwannee County, he had lived in Bloomingdale for three years. He was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church in Live Oak, was a former tree surgeon and was formerly employed with Wal-Mart in Pooler, Ga.

Survivors include: his children, Katie Jones of Pensacola; Brenton Jones of Marianna, and Brianna Jones of Cedar Rapids, Io.; brothers, Claude Jones and John Jones, both of Bloomingdale, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Jan 15, in the chapel of the funeral home at 901 Hwy. 80, Pooler, Ga.

Raymond Edwin McCall

Raymond Edwin McCall, 83, died in his home in Live Oak, Jan. 3, 2004 after a short-term illness. McCall was born Aug. 14, 1920 in Fitzgerald, Ga. He came to Live Oak from Jacksonville in 1992. He worked as a freight inspector for CSX Corporation and served in the Navy and Coast Guard. He attended St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Live Oak.

Survivors include: his wife, Kathryn Watson-McCall of Live Oak; three daughters, Jean Hicks of Lady Lake, Roberta Linville of Tampa and Linda Vanderhoof, Chesapeake, Va; step-son Mitchell Watson of Jacksonville; one brother, Joseph R. McCall of Jacksonville; three sisters, Lilly Dean Moore, Lilly Mae Horne and Mildred Louise Carter, all of Jacksonville; eight grandchildren: two step-grandchildren: and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Jan. 17, at 1 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church. Father Michael Pendergraft will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of the Suwannee Valley, 1900 Florida Gateway Center Blvd., Lake City, FL 32024.

Sally Legere

Sally Legere, 65, passed away Jan. 8, 2004, in the Lafayette Health Care Center, Mayo. The Bell native moved to the McAlpin area in 1975 from Gilchrist County. She was born April 8, 1938. She was a homemaker and member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.

Survivors include: her husband, Charles Legere of McAlpin; one daughter, Martha Laliberte of McAlpin; one son, Charles Legere, Jr., of Branford; two sisters, Florence Harris of Germany, and Helen Williamson of Patterson, Ga.; four brothers, Glen Harris of San Antonio, Rex Harris of Washington State, Elmer Harris of Tampa and Ed Harris of Columbia, S.C. She is predeceased by a daughter, Ann Ross, and a brother, Steve Harris.

Memorial services will be conducted Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. in Daniels Memorial Chapel. Family requests no flowers and donations to the charity of their choice.

Ruby B. Roberts

Ruby B. Roberts, 89, of O'Brien, passed away Jan. 12, 2004, at Advent Christian Village in Dowling Park. A native of Key West, born Nov. 24, 1914, she was the daughter of the late William Bernard Buckley and Lorena Riggs Buckley. Her late husband, W. Norwood Roberts, preceded her in death.

Survivors include: her four sons, William N. Roberts Jr. of LaGrange, Ga.; Joseph B. Roberts of Live Oak; George W. Roberts of O'Brien; and Jack A. Roberts of Lakeland; four daughters-in-law, 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Jan. 15, at the United Methodist Church in Branford. Interment will follow at the Oak Grove Memorial Cemetery in Branford.

The family will receive friends at the Daniels Funeral Home in Branford from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., today, Jan. 14.

Paul Jethro Umstead Jr.

Paul Jethro Umstead Jr., 75, resident of Live Oak, passed away Jan. 7, 2004, in the Lake City V.A. Medical Center, following a long illness. A lifelong resident of Suwannee County, he was the son of the late Paul J. and Hazel Umstead Sr. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and had worked for most of his life as a security guard, having retired in 1994. Umstead was a member of the Pine Grove Methodist Church of Live Oak.

Survivors include: his wife, Shirley Umstead of Live Oak; two sons, Paul J. Umstead III of Live Oak and James D. (Deanna) Umstead of Jasper; one daughter, Kelly (James) Paulk of Jasper; and four grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services was conducted at 2 p.m., Jan. 9, in the Pine Grove Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Steve Polk, church pastor, officiating.

Estelle Fullbright Nelson

Estelle Fullbright Nelson, 93, passed away Jan. 12, 2004, at Dowling Park. A native of Shellman, Ga., where she grew up, she resided in Suwannee County for more than 50 years and managed the Suwannee High School Cafeteria for many years before she retired in the 70's. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years, a member of the W.M.U. and a member of the Live Oak Garden Club.

Survivors include: sons, Edgar J. Fullbright Jr., Cocoa; Wesley G. and Alvin H. Fullbright, both of Live Oak; step-son, Bobby Nelson, Live Oak; step-daughter Linda Raines, Live Oak; grandchildren, Edgar J. Fullbright III, Weirsdale, Rebecca Fafard, Cocoa, Wesley G. Fullbright Jr., Ariton, Ala., Lee R., John D. and Andrew M. Fullbright, Tammy Corbett, all of Live Oak, Vicki Braswell, Mayo; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Jan. 15, at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. David McKeithen and the Rev. Hugh Dampier officiating. Interment followed in Live Oak Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to: The Gideons International, 2900 Lebanon Road, Nashville, TN 37214.

J.D. Clark

J.D. Clark, 89, of Dowling Park, passed away Jan. 12, 2004, in the North Florida Regional Medical Center, Gainesville, after a long illness. The Suwannee County native was a farmer all his life.

Survivors include: his wife, Margaret Clark, Dowling Park; four daughters, Shelba Jean Anderson, Live Oak, Barbara Carolyn (Charles) Snyder, Durham, N.C., Annette Clark, Raleigh, N.C. and Vickie (Ed) Music, Live Oak; one son, Wesley (Eda) Clark, San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Frank Clark, Live Oak; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grand son, Alex Itenson.

Funeral services was conducted at 2 p.m., Jan. 15, at the Dowling Park Church of God with the Rev. Frank Jones officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Alvin "Al" Russell

Alvin "Al" Russell, 68, of Live Oak, passed away Jan. 2, 2004, in the South Georgia Medical Center, after a long illness. The San Bernadino, Calif. native moved to Live Oak eight years ago from Apple Valley, Calif. He was a retired surveyor for the San Bernadino, Calif. county, a retired Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Senior Bowling League of the Live Oak Bowling Alley.

Survivors include: his wife, Kathleen Russell, Live Oak; two daughters, Deann Barnhart, California and Denise Madsen, Arizona; two sons, Jerry Smith, Pennsylvania and Keith Flynn, Live Oak; one sister, Jewell Lefever, California; three brothers, Chris, Verlin and Don Russell, all of California; four grandchildren, Jeremiah Smith, Alabama, Nathaniel Flynn, California, Schuyler Smith and Sloane Smith, both of Pennsylvania; and one great-granddaughter, Crystal Smith, Alabama.

Grady Harold Smith Sr.

Grady Harold Smith Sr., 67, passed away Jan. 10, 2004, at his home following a short illness. The O'Brien resident was born June 30, 1936 in West Columbia, S.C., moved from South Carolina to Jacksonville then to Pinellas County in 1965. He owned a service station until 1968, worked as a customer service manager at Rambler Auto Dealership until 1972, worked for metal industries in Clearwater from 1972 to 1989, as a truck driver, then assistant personnel director, moving to O'Brien in 1989, where he was a partner in "T-MAC'S" in Live Oak from 1990 to 1991, long distance truck driver for Fort White Trucking from 1993 to 1997, when he retired. He was also a member of O'Brien Baptist Church since 1989 where he was an active member of the choir and director of Brotherhood Association.

Survivors include: his wife, Ana Marie Smith, O'Brien; three daughters, Sharon Graves of Simpsonville, Valerie Smith of Safety Harbor and Katherine Smith of Bronson; four sons, Robert Smith of Seminole, Gary Smith of Clearwater, Richard Smith of Daytona Beach and Grady H. Smith Jr. of Branford; one sister, Louise Cox of Belleview; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m., Jan. 13, at the O'Brien Baptist Church with the Rev. George E. Fryar III officiating. Interment followed in the O'Brien Cemetery.

Mitchell Leon Jerkins

Mitchell Leon Jerkins, 54, passed away December 19, 2003, in Gainesville. Born in Hamlett, N.C., he was a resident of Lafayette County most of his live. He had worked and lived at Suwannee Farms for the last 14 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin Jerkins of Live Oak and Mildred Edwards of Rockingham, N.C. and a half-brother, Mark Jerkins.

Survivors include: four children, one daughter, Christine Brooks of Lee, three sons, Leon Jerkins and Bryant Jerkins and Jamie Deas of Live Oak; 12 grandchildren; one sister, Patricia Koon of Mayo; two half-sisters, Gail Humber of Rockingham, N.C., Linda Cone of Mayo; three half-brothers, Franky Edwards, Billy Edwards of North Carolina and Steven Jerkins of St. Augustine; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m, Dec. 22, in Airline Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Bobby McCray officiating.

Marion Cascaddan

Marion Cascaddan, 94, Deland died January 6 in Deland. She was a former resident of Branford, moving to Deland in 1999.

She was born October 3, 1909 in Pontiac Michigan, moved to Branford in 1967. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Branford and was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Richard O. Cascaddan of Deland and Robert E. Cascaddan of Orlando. Four grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.

Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home of Deland was in charge of all arrangements.

Mildred Lloyd

Mildred Lloyd, 77, of Branford passed away Monday, January 5 2004 in Shands at AGH, Gainesville, following a long illness.

The Huntington Park, California native was born September 23, 1926, and moved to the Branford area from Citra, one year ago. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Mrs. Lloyd is survived by three daughters, Melodie Dotson of Melbourne, Tonie Lloyd of Citra, Thomasina Jones of Branford; one brother, Carl Meske of Washington, 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren also survive.

Ruby B. Roberts

Ruby B. Roberts, 89, of O'Brien died Monday at the Advent Christian Village in Dowling Park.

J. Thomas Bennett

Thomas Bennett, 84, of Jasper, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004 at Suwannee Valley Nursing Center, Jasper, following an extended illness. Mr. Bennett was a native and lifelong resident of Hamilton County. He retired from the United States Postal Service after 36 years of service. In August of 1984 he was named District Mail Carrier of the Year. He also served on the board of directors at the Hamilton County memorial Hospital and A. S. C. S. Board in Hamilton County. Bennett was a World War II Veteran of the United States Navy and member of the local V. F. W. He also served as Sunday School Teacher and Deacon at Jasper First Baptist Church where he was a faithful member. Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Bennett in Feb. of 2001.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and John Haskins of Jasper;l three brothers, Bloxam Bennett, Live Oak, Lavon Bennett, Plant City, and Elwood Bennett, Columbus, GA.; one granddaughter, Kristen Campbell (Cannon), Cumming, GA.; one great granddaughter, Lawton Elaine Campbell.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 in the chapel of Harry T. Reid Funeral Home with Rev. Troy Varnum officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Waldo Kennedy, Hugh Hunter, Tommy Daniels, David Barker, Stamps Chandler and David Goolsby, Jr. Honorary Pallbearers were: Joe Taylor, Clyde Payne, Raymond Henderson, Jack Vinson, David Goolsby, Sr., Aubra Young, Ken Daniels, and Richard Gibson.

Wayne H. Hillhouse

W ayne H. Hillhouse, 55, of Vero Beach, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004 at Indian River Memorial Hospital in Vero Beach, following a brief illness. Wayne was born in Lake City on Dec. 27, 1948 to Roy and Estelle Hillhouse. Wayne was a graduate of Hamilton County High School and was retired from the landscaping business. He was a Vietnam Veteran of the United States Army and was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church in Jasper.

Survivors include one son, Wayne of Live Oak; his mother, Estelle Hillhouse, White Springs; two brothers, Gary Hillhouse, Lake City and Cecil Hillhouse, White Springs; one sister, Louise Norris, Jasper; and close friend Elvira Knights, Vero Beach.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 in the chapel of Harry T. Reid funeral Home with Rev. Randy Ogburn officiating.

Interment followed in Swift creek Cemetery.

Verdie Morgan Shiver

Verdie Morgan Shiver, 91, died on Thursday, January 8, 2004 in Monticello, Florida.

She was a homemaker. She was born in Mayo, and was a previous resident of Lafayette County. She had lived in Monticello for many years. She was a member of the Elizabeth Baptist Church in Monticello and had served as a Sunday School teacher at the Church of God in Monticello for many years and also as secretary for several years.

She is survived by five sons; Drexel Shiver of Jacksonville, Jimmy Shiver, Mack Shiver and Harvey Shiver all of Monticello, and Jerry Shiver of Jacksonville; two sisters, Gladys Hart and Nina Singletary, both of Jacksonville; twenty four grandchildren, forty one great grandchildren, and four great, great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Loomis Lamar Shiver, and two daughter's Gloria Rodenberry Cichon and Wanda Tatum.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 12, 2004 at Elizabeth Baptist Church, and burial at Elizabeth Cemetery, Monticello.

Family received friends on Sunday, January 11, from 7-9 p.m. at Beggs Funeral Home Monticello Chapel, Monticello.

A memorial contribution may be made to Elizabeth Baptist Church Youth Fund, 4124 Bassett Dairy Road, Monticello, FL 32344.

Carl David Pert

Carl David Pert 40, died Wednesday, January 7, 2004 in Mayo.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 11, 2004 at Beggs Funeral Home Madison Chapel. Family received friends 6-9 p.m. at the Chapel.

He was born in Jacksonville, Florida and lived most of his life there before moving to Lafayette County, a year ago. He worked in yard maintenance.

He is survived by two brothers; Glen Pert of Jacksonville, and Ray Pert of Mayo.
