William Webb Glasgow
William Webb Glasgow, infant son of Scot and Leanne W. Glasgow, born Jan. 10, 2004, died Feb. 10. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Lee and Patti Webb of Holly Springs, and his paternal grandparents, Henry and Sally Glasgow of Cary.
A memorial service was held at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary on Thursday, Feb. 12. Dr. Randy Sherron, pastor, officiated. Friends were received in the fellowship hall following the memorial service.

Mark Reid Tucker
Mark Reid Tucker, 49, of Apex, died Feb. 12, 2004. He was employed by the Wake County Sheriff's office as a Deputy Sheriff/Investigator. From September 1999 through March 2002, Mr. Tucker was the United States Marshal for the Eastern District of North Carolina, appointed by President Clinton to serve and protect. He was the president of the Wake County Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #41, from 1988 to present.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia H. Tucker of Apex; two sons, Chad and Matthew Tucker of the home; parents, Dallas and Virginia Tucker of Cary; one sister, Robbie Angell of Asheville; and three brothers, Tom Tucker of Raleigh, and Buddy Tucker and Dan Tucker, both of Cary.
The family received friends on Sunday, Feb. 15, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 16, at Mid-Way Baptist Church, 6910 Fayetteville Road, Raleigh. Pastor Mitch Mitchell officiated. Burial followed at Montlawn Memorial Park.

Paul Manley Rockefeller
Paul Manley Rockefeller, 84, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004. Mr. Rockefeller, who was born in Wayne, N.Y., on Jan. 10, 1920, was the son of the Rev. Amos Cole Rockefeller and Louella Ammerman Rockefeller. Mr. Rockefeller served in the U.S. Army, 111th Anti-Aircraft Group, European Theater, during World War II. He was employed by IBM for 42 years, retiring as corporate site standards administrator for IBM's Research Triangle Park Research and Manufacturing area. He was a member of the Standards Engineering Society and served on the Governor's Metrication Committee.
Mr. Rockefeller was a member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh from 1972 until his death, and of the Francis Asbury Sunday school class. He was a longtime volunteer with Meals on Wheels of Wake County.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy McDuffie Rockefeller; brother, Howard Rockefeller of Fairless Hills, Pa.; children, Judith L.Rockefeller of Virginia Beach, Va., Katherine R. Struve and husband Daniel K. Struve of Columbus, Ohio, Ruth R. Auman and husband V. Leon Auman of Richmond, Va., and David R. Rockefeller and wife Lisa B. Rockefeller of Raleigh; and grandchildren, Anne Struve, Laura Struve, Michael Auman, Steven Auman and Christopher Auman.
A memorial service was held at Edenton Street United Methodist Church on Thursday, Feb. 19.

Edward M. Carter
Edward M. Carter, 75, of Fuquay-Varina, devoted husband, father and grandfather, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004. Ed was the son of the late Dwight William Carter Sr. and Leora May Carter, and was born and raised in Fillmore, Calif. He was a retired plant manager of Georgia Pacific Plywood Company.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Roberta Merry Carter. Also surviving are his children, Gary Carter and wife, Debbie of Moncure, Terry Carter Barnes and husband, Ed of Apex, and Mike Carter and wife, Donna of Durham; grandchildren, Sloan Marie Barnes, Stacy Barnes-Hardy and husband, Jay, Eric and Ali Carter, Jill Duplessis and Heather Carter; sister, Grace Easley; and brother, Dwight William Carter Jr. Additional survivors are several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Herbert Carter.
The family received friends Sunday afternoon, Feb. 22, at Apex Funeral Home. A memorial service was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Apex Funeral Home Chapel. A private burial service was held later in Apex Cemetery.

Kathleen E. Collins
Infant Kathleen "Katie" Elizabeth Collins was stillborn Feb. 20, 2004 at Wake Medical Center to Bryan G. and Sarah W. Collins of Holly Springs. A graveside service was held Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m. in the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Buddy Johnson officiated.
Surviving in addition to her parents are grandparents, Larry B. and Debra G. Collins of Apex, Gerry Weathers of Fuquay-Varina, and Pat Howard and husband Larry of Dunn; and great-grandparents, Jasper and Frances Collins of Holly Springs, Charles and Jackie Gray of Apex, Rupert and Doris Weathers of Fuquay-Varina, and Ruby Medlin of Goldsboro. Also surviving are several aunts and uncles.

Helen Maggie Ely
Helen Maggie Ely, 97, of Apex died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004 at Western Wake Medical Center in Cary. She was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her husband, the Rev. Herod M. Ely, preceded her in death in 1988. He was pastor of College View Church of God in Raleigh for many years.
A service celebrating her life and homegoing was held Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 24, in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Amos Clark officiated. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Cary. Surviving are a daughter, Evelyn L. Finley of Apex; two grandsons, William Finley of Wake Forest and Michael Finley of Knightdale; and three great-grandsons, Scott Finley, Mark Finley and Kyle Finley. The family received friends Tuesday prior to the service at the Apex Funeral Home.
Kathleen Sears Lawrence
"I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course; I have kept my faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto them also that love his appearing." — II Timothy 4:7-8
Kathleen Sears Lawrence of Apex, born Jan. 21, 1915, died Feb. 23, 2004.
"Miss Kathleen" died at her home on Monday morning following a lengthy illness. She will forever be remembered for her courage, strength, humor, determination, love for her family and faith in God. She was a lifelong faithful member of Olive Chapel Baptist Church, where she served in many different capacities including many years as a Sunday school teacher. She spent many more years teaching her children and grandchildren. This was her favorite class and her last words were final instructions: "I have lived well, I have shown you how to live well too."
She retired from UNC School of Dentistry in 1980. Following retirement she worked at the UNC Purchasing Department.
A funeral service was held Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004 in Olive Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Long officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday evening, Feb. 24, at Apex Funeral Home.
She is survived by her sons, David Lawrence of the home and Mike Lawrence of Apex; daughters, Nancy Walker and husband, Pete and Jacque Huber and husband, Ron, both of Apex; daughter in love, Frances Lawrence of Apex; sister, Isabel Lawrence of Apex; brother, William Sears of Raleigh; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jack Lawrence; her son, J. Tommy Lawrence; and her grandson, Barry Tingen.
The family would like to thank Dr. Singh, Dr. Graham and the staff at Cary Oncology as well as Wake County Hospice for the loving care and support shown to Mother and our family during the time of her illness. Paul R. Brennan
Paul R. Brennan, 84, died peacefully at home early Monday morning, Feb. 23, after a lengthy illness. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church on High House Road in Cary.
Born in Binghamton, N.Y., Mr. Brennan was a 40-year resident of Cary and a retired IBM engineer. He was also a World War II Army veteran and a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Cary.
Surviving is his devoted wife of 62 years, Dorothy, of the home; daughter Kathleen McGregor and husband Thomas of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; sons Donald and wife Marion of Cary, Terry and wife Patty of Damascus, Md., and Michael of Cary; 14 grandchildren, eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions be made to Hospice of Wake County.
Mary Hudson House Jones
Mary Hudson House Jones, 92, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004 at Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center. She was born in Cary on May 9, 1911, to DeWitt Henry House and Bettie Williams House. Mrs. Jones was a lifelong resident of Cary until her health caused her to move to Durham with her daughter and son-in-law and later to Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Mrs. Jones was a graduate of Mars Hill College and a bookkeeper at N.C. State University before becoming a full-time homemaker.
She is survived by her daughter, Bettie Jones O'Shields and her husband Hugh of Durham; grandchildren, Robert O'Shields and wife Trish of Siler City, Kellie O. Webster and husband Bryan, and Kyla O. Phipps and husband Bradley, all of Durham; and three great-grandsons, Bryce O'Shields, Sean O'Shields and Micah Webster.
Her husband, W. Bryce Jones, preceded her in death, as did her brothers Herbert House and Henry Page House.
The family received friends Feb. 25 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary and will receive friends for an hour before the service at the church. At other times they will be at the home of Hugh and Bettie O'Shields in Durham.

Shafter W. 'Buck' Buchanan
Shafter Watson Buchanan Jr., 79, of Cary, son of Shafter and Lillian Buchanan, died Feb. 16, 2004, at Rex Hospital.
Shafter was a Raleigh native and graduate of Hugh Morson High School, served in the Army Air Corps and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill. After several years as a photographer for the state Department of Tourism, he became the owner of Buchanan's Nursery. An avid private pilot, retirement provided him with time to pursue flying, as well as photography, travel and family.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Jones Buchanan; sons, Curt Buchanan of Raleigh and Jace Buchanan of Morganton; grandchildren, Amy B. Orders of Apex and Ben Buchanan of Savannah, Ga.; and a great-granddaughter.
The family would like to thank its very special caregivers for their loving attention and devotion, and also the dedicated people with Hospice.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Cary. Arrangements were by The Cremation Society of the Carolinas.

Joseph Cerelli
Joseph A. Cerelli, 90, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004. He is survived by two daughters; Eleanor Somma of Cary and Geraldine Fellerman of Clark, N.J.; two grandchildren, Gregory Somma of Cary and Cynthia Clavijo of Holly Springs; and five great-grandchildren, Matthew, Kristen and Nicholas Somma of Cary and Abigail and Austin Clavijo of Holly Springs.
A funeral Mass was held Saturday, Feb. 28, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Apex. Burial followed at Apex Cemetery. The family received friends Feb. 27 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.
Gene L. 'Sandy' Simmons
Gene L. "Sandy" Simmons, 78, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004. Sandy was a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill where he received a bachelor's degree after serving in World War II with Company E of the 343rd Infantry of the 86th Black Hawk Division. He served in both the European and Asian theaters and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement. A resident of Cary for more than 30 years, Sandy was a retired salesman who enjoyed gardening and UNC Tar Heel sports. But his "all-time favorite" was simply being in the company of his loving family and friends.
He is survived by one son, Connelly Gene Simmons and wife, Mary Elizabeth of Raleigh; two daughters, Dorcas Ann Heffernan and husband, Steve of Marietta, Ga., and Mary-Margaret Armstrong and husband, John of Raleigh; two brothers, Ray Simmons and wife, Dimples of Brevard, his twin Jerry Simmons and wife, Ruby of Winston-Salem; one sister, Jewell Wells and husband, Donald of Whitesburg, Ga.; four grandchildren, Charles Sterling Price of Marietta, Ga., and Alexandra Elaine Simmons, Kaitlyn Iva Simmons and Connelly Ian Simmons, all of Raleigh; and three step-grandchildren, Shallin Nicole Mayher of Prague, The Czech Republic, and Benjamin Baker Armstrong and Thomas Garrison Armstrong of Raleigh. He is also survived by a broad extended family of caring in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Dorcas Iva Connelly Simmons.
A funeral service was held Sunday afternoon, Feb. 29, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary with Dr. Donald Wells officiating. Burial was on Monday, March 1, at Southlawn Memorial Park in Petersburg, Va.

Nannie Frances Pierce Hatfield
Nannie Hatfield, 100, of Apex went home to be with the Lord, Monday, March 1, 2004. She was born Jan. 16, 1904, the fourth of 10 children of the late Don and Betty Brooks Pierce. Nannie was the oldest member of Catawba Springs Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon S. Hatfield, and an infant son.
Survivors are son and daughter-in-law, Haywood S. and Frances Hatfield of Apex; daughter, Oleta H. Winchell of Raleigh; daughter and son-in-law, Nell H. and Roy Cochran Jr. of Apex; grandchildren, James "Ronnie" Cochran and wife Theresa, and Beverly C. Beland and husband Richard; step-grandchildren, Everett Perry and Mary Frances McCall; four great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-great-grandchildren. Nannie is also survived by her sister, Annie Louise Jones of Apex; sisters-in-law, B. Ruth Pierce and Lane Pierce of Apex; and brother-in-law Douglas Hatfield and wife Helen of Durham.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers that have helped with mama's care, especially for the loving and dedicated care that Sallie Ponder has so faithfully given her for more than six years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 4, at Catawba Springs Christian Church, 6801 Ten Ten Road, Apex. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
