Victor Raymond Wagner Jr.
Victor Raymond Wagner Jr., 73, of Cary passed away Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2005. Born in Chicago in 1931, he was the son of Victor Raymond Wagner Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Dywer Wagner. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl P. Wagner of Cary; daughters, Mary Elizabeth W. M’Baidande of Winchester, Va., Rosemary W. Kauffmann of Raleigh, Kathleen W. Costello of Winter Park, Fla., Susan Wagner of Charlotte, Jennifer W. Greer of Boone and Victoria W. Decker of Canton, Conn.; sisters, Carole Sullivan of Sarasota, Fla., Rita Thibodeaux of Palantine, Ill., Loretto Clarkson of Dallas, Texas, and Marybeth Rutledge of Dayton, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren. Victor was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth C. Wagner, in 1992 and a sister, Jeannine Rogers, in 2003.

J.D. Thorne
April 1, 1925-Jan. 11, 2005
J.D. Thorne, 79, of Cary died Tuesday in Dallas, Texas, after a brief illness. A private burial in North Carolina will be held at a later date. Local arrangements are by Joyner’s Funeral Home, Wilson.
Mr. Thorne was a native of Elm City. He was well known for his baseball including pitching, hitting and helping Charles L. Coon High School of Wilson to state baseball championships in 1942 and 1943. J.D. served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and returned to graduate from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton) in 1949. He signed with the St. Louis Browns as a pitcher, playing minor league baseball for three years before beginning a career in teaching and crop hail insurance. He was a member of the Atlantic Christian College/Barton Sports Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Nunn Thorne; a son, James "Dan" Thorne Jr., a daughter-in-law, Vicki, and three grandchildren, J. D. III, Katherine and Robert, all of Plano, Texas; three sisters, Ethel Boswell of Cary, Annie T. Joyner and Lu Moerbach, both of Wilson; and three brothers, Edwin of Charlotte, John of Greensboro and Marvin of Largo, Fla.

Rosa Brown Truelove
Rosa Brown Truelove departed this life Jan. 12, 2005. Rosa was a woman of great faith and always placed her trust in God. Her determination to provide a good and loving home for her family through her selfless dedication and hard work will be forever cherished by her children. She was a faithful participating member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Duncan.
Rosa was born to the late John S. and Lilly F. Brown and was the last of 11 siblings. She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Leon Truelove; sisters, Cara Smith, Irela Hobbs and Alberta Crowson; and brothers, Talbert Brown, Hugh Brown and Bennie Brown. Remaining are her children and their families: Frances Turnage of Cary, and her daughter Kathy and husband Bruce Pierce; Becky McLeod of Angier, and her sons and daughters-in-law, David and Laurie McLeod and Craig and Carol McLeod; Gene Truelove and his wife, Nanette of Fuquay-Varina, and their children, Perry E. Truelove and wife Gabriella, Vanette Truelove, and Jessica Jones and her husband Darin; and Anne Lanier and her husband Lawrence, and their daughter Laura White and her husband Tommy; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Rosa leaves a legacy of Christian faith, abundant love and devotion to her family, generosity and hospitality.
The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Southern Wake Medical Facility in Fuquay-Varina and Hospice of Wake County, and to Macedonia Baptist Church for their loving and devoted care for the past seven years.
The viewing was held at Macedonia Baptist Church at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 13. The service to celebrate her life was held at the same location at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14.

Ronald E. Hillen
Ronald Edward Hillen of Cary died peacefully at home surrounded by his family Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, following a two-and-a-half-year battle with pancreatic cancer. "Ron" was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and retired from The Consolidated Edison Company of New York after 37 years of service. He and his family moved to Cary in 1995 and he enjoyed the wonderful friends he made in North Carolina. Mr. Hillen is survived by his parents, Edward P. and Marjorie Weir Hillen of Mastic, N.Y.; his loving wife of 23 years, Patricia Ann Shackleton; his son, Ryan Shackleton Hillen; his daughter, Laurel Shackleton Hillen; and his beloved yellow Labrador retriever, Echo. He is also survived by his brother, Thomas F. Hillen and wife, Rose, of Elmont, N.Y.; nephew, Shawn P. Hillen and wife, Judy, of Galveston, Texas; nephew, Stephen T. Hillen, and niece, Heather R. Hillen, both of Elmont, N.Y.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Ron Hillen will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, at 4 p.m. at St. Francis United Methodist Church, 2965 Kildaire Farm Road, Cary, officiated by the Rev. Susan Pate Greenwood and the Rev. Lib Campbell. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.
The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Mark Yoffe and Dr. Woodward Cannon and their staff as well as to the staff of Rex Hospital and Rex Cancer Center for all of their care, kindness and compassion. Lois Juanita Stevens
Lois Juanita Brown Stevens, 73, of Apex died Jan. 11, 2005. Mrs. Stevens was a native of Columbus County and was the wife of Matthew J. Stevens for 52 years. Surviving in addition to her husband are her children, Deborah S. Neely and husband, Chuck of Apex, Kenneth Stevens of Apex and Timothy Stevens of Cedar Hill, Mo.; grandchildren, Levi Neely and Cammie Ward; brothers, Bill Brown and Larry Brown; and her sister, Thelma Mimms.
The family received friends Friday afternoon, Jan. 14, at Apex Funeral Home. A funeral service followed at 5 p.m. in the Chapel of Apex Funeral Home. Burial was Saturday morning at Bell’s Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
Jeannette M. Laing
Jan. 30, 1919-Jan. 5, 2005
Jeannette Mattox Laing, 85, of Cary died peacefully Wednesday night, Jan. 5, 2005, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Wendell, the daughter of the late Jonathan Joseph Mattox and Ernestine Bain Mattox. She was the widow of Hubert A. Laing. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Greenmount Cemetery in Wendell. A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Saturday at Colonial Baptist Church in Cary.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Marty Schneider of Cary; grandsons, Daniel Joseph Schneider and Matthew Michael Schneider; and sister, Annie Sue Faison of Wendell. She was preceded in death by an infant son, John Robert Laing; and her brothers, John D. Mattox, Vernon W. Mattox and Edward J. Mattox.

The family received friends Saturday afternoon at Strickland Funeral Home in Wendell, and other times at the home of Bonnie and Marty Schneider in Cary.
Sgt. Richard Scott Church Sr.
Sgt. Richard Scott Church Sr., known casually as "Sarge" and by most children as "friend," went to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 17, 2005.
Sgt. Church served as a policeman with the Concord Police Department for more than 30 years and specifically as the school safety officer for most of them. He was admired, loved and respected by both young and old. He received dozens of honors and citations from clubs and companies from throughout Concord and Cabarrus County. Of special note, he was honored by the students and faculty of Concord High School in 1964, when the high school annual was dedicated to him.
He was a veteran of World War II, having seen action in both France and Germany. After serving his country faithfully, he returned to North Carolina, where he met his future wife, Marcel Hatley, to whom he was married for 58 years.
He was a dedicated husband, father and community leader. He was a friend to both rich and poor. He never met a stranger. After retiring from the Concord Police Department in 1980, he moved to Raleigh, where he enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Richard Scott Church Jr. Interment
followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

He loved gardening, collecting antiques, history and family. But mostly, he loved life and he lived it to the fullest. Just recently, Sgt. Church and his wife moved to Carolina Beach to be close to their two daughters. He will be missed, but we all know where he is today. Because of his personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, he received his greatest honor, that of being escorted into the very presence of God for all eternity. "Sarge" is home.
As the headlines in the Concord Tribune read upon his retirement in 1980, "So long, Sergeant Church, we will miss you!" We as his family and friends share the same sentiment.
Sgt. Richard Scott Church Sr. was born June 18, 1925 in Davidson, the son of the late Walter Grady Church and Florence Lily Frye Church.
He is survived by his wife, Marcel Hatley Church of the home; children, Sharon Luquire and husband Donald of Carolina Beach, Patricia Chappell and husband David of Carolina Beach, and the Rev. Richard Scott Church Jr. and wife Debbie of Atlanta; grandchildren, Shane Luquire and wife Shannon, Justin Luquire, Richard Scott Church III and Mary Church; a great-granddaughter, Ava Katheyn Luquire; brother, Robert Church of Mississippi; and sister Sue Ellen McLean of North Carolina.
John O. Maynard
John O. Maynard, 87, of Apex died early Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at Rex Nursing Care of Apex, after an extended illness. He was born Jan. 8, 1918, the son of Thomas Edgar and Betty Ella Blake Maynard. He had lived and worked in Wake County all his life. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard.
Upon returning to Apex, John worked for R.J. Holt Service Station, the Town of Apex in the maintenance department and W. A. Hinton & Son Hardware as manager of the farm and building supply. He also worked with N.C. Fire & Safety Equipment Co. Inc., from which he retired. He was a volunteer fireman with the Apex Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years, where he also retired. He was a lifelong member of Salem Baptist Church.
A graveside service was held with military honors in the Salem Baptist Church cemetery Friday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. The family received relatives and friends at their home following the service.
John is survived by his wife, Ruth Goodwin Maynard; a daughter, Mary Nell M. Trotter; and a son, Thomas E. Maynard and his wife, Annette; and a granddaughter, Emily, all of Apex. He is also survived by a sister, Gladys M. Wilkinson, also of Apex, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde and Edgar Maynard, and three sisters, Estelle M. Lewis, Foy Maynard and Delina Murray.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring to do so may make memorials in his name to a charity of their choice.
The family wishes to thank special friends Shirley I. Nelms, Jo Jones and Helen Bullock, who provided their loving support and help during John's time of sickness. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the administration and entire nursing staff of the Rex Healthcare Center of Apex for their loving care and concern for John during his stay at the facility. Your devotion to his care will be forever remembered.

Helen Frances Barcel
Helen Frances Barcel, 79, of Cary and formerly of Apex, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in her home. Mrs. Barcel was born in Bronx, N.Y., and attended Cathedral High School in Manhattan.
Mrs. Barcel along with her husband, Adrian, moved in 1990 from Rockland County, N.Y., to Apex. For 20 years, she was a legal secretary in Suffern, N.Y. Mrs. Barcel was a lifelong friend of Carmel.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at St. Andrew The Apostle Catholic Church, 3008 Old Raleigh Road, Apex.
Mrs. Barcel is survived by her husband, Adrian Barcel; children, Betty Kirk and husband, Alan, Stephen Barcel, Tom Barcel and wife, Rose, all of Cary, and James Barcel and wife, Judy, of Coral Springs, Fla.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Thomas Joseph Barry
Thomas Joseph Barry, 87, of Cary passed away Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at WakeMed Cary Hospital after a courageous battle.
Mr. Barry was a long-term resident of Durham who was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was born Jan. 5, 1918, the son of the late Patrick and Margaret Barry, also of Brooklyn, N.Y. Mr. Barry was a graduate of St. Michaels High School in New York and St. Johns University of New York. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, serving in North Africa and Italy, and was awarded a Purple Heart. He worked for Liggett & Myers in Durham for more than 30 years. He was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Church of Durham.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Barry of Cary; son, Thomas J. Barry and wife, CarolAnn, of Charlotte; daughter, Margaret Mary McGillivray and husband, Stuart, of Tampa, Fla.; son, Robert J. Barry and wife, Elaine Buxton Barry, of Cary; and grandchildren, Matthew Christopher Barry, Megan Elizabeth Barry, Kathleen Allison Barry, Sarah Nicole Barry, Alan Thomas McGillivray, Erin Hart Barry, Laura Rosalyn Barry and Ethan Buxton Barry.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John, and three sisters, Catherine, Anne and Lorette, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.
He was an avid baseball fan and a devoted family man who loved his wife, children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed the occasions that brought together all of his children and grandchildren. He lived his life with a strong faith in God.
A visitation was held Monday evening at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. A funeral Mass was held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church of Durham.
A memorial service was also planned for Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Woodland Terrace in Cary.

Glenna M. Winters
Glenna M. Winters, 77, of Cary died Jan. 24, 2005 due to complications from surgery. She was born Sept. 25, 1927 to Arthur and Eulalia Moyer in Bloomville, near Tiffin, Ohio. Glenna was vivacious, creative and talented and loved golf, children (especially her grandchildren), birds and flowers.
She attended Bowling Green State University and taught elementary school in Bloomvillle, Ohio, Charlotte and Norwalk, Conn. She later held a computer position with the Town of Cary.
She is survived by her husband, Gordon Winters; daughter, Tina Taylor of Cary; grandchildren, Nicholas and Katie; son, Jay Winters of The Woodlands, Texas; brothers, Don and Richard Moyer of Fremont, Ohio; and sisters, Jean Katzenmeyer of Tiffin, Ohio, and Dorothy Durfee of Peoria, Ill. She was predeceased by her brothers, Lloyd, Robert and Charles, and sisters, Marguerite and Betty Brickner.
A funeral was held Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. Entombment followed at Raleigh Memorial Park.
The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

George John Hage
George John Hage, 75, of Apex died Jan. 20, 2005 at Duke University Medical Center. Mr. Hage was born in Lake Charles, La., on Jan. 18, 1930 to Nafty Hage and Mary Farris Hage. He was a retired band director and music teacher. Mr. Hage was an active member of Kildaire Farms Racquet & Swim Club. He was a Korean War veteran.
A funeral Mass was held Monday, Jan. 24, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Burial was to be in the Apex Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Connie C. Hage; children, Robert Patrick Hage of Ocean Grove, N.J., Nafty Marion Hage of Dallas, Pa., George John Hage Jr. of Nashville, Tenn., Deborah Elizabeth Hage of Raleigh and Catherine Lynn Hage of Morganton; stepchildren, Paige Clark Dickerson of Apex and Ashleigh Clark Miller of Cary; and grandchildren, Michael James Hage, David John Hage, Caleb Burt Dickerson, Noah James Dickerson, Aaron Bruce Dickerson and Elliot Jacob Miller.
The family received friends Sunday afternoon, Jan. 23, at Apex Funeral Home.

Lois P. Hooks
Lois P. Hooks, 82, of Apex died Jan. 24, 2005. A service celebrating her life and homegoing will be held today, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. in the Apex Baptist Church. The Rev. Phil Qualls will officiate. Burial will follow in the Apex Cemetery.
Lois faithfully served in the Apex Baptist Church Choir for many years, most recently as a member of the Senior Adult Choir. She was active in the Apex Golden Age Club, where she formerly served as "Golden Age Queen." She supported her children as well as her grandchildren in all of their sports activities. She was their greatest fan. "Her cup ran over with love for others."
She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Hooks, and a son, Michael B. Hooks.
She is survived by a son, David and wife Joan; a son, Jimmy and wife Lori; a daughter-in-law, Judy; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ruth Hartsfield; many dear friends; and her church family at Apex Baptist Church.
