Paul Edward 'Eddie' Cooper
Paul Edward "Eddie" Cooper, 52, of 109 White Cedar Run, Holly Springs, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at UNC Hospitals Chapel Hill.

He was a precious man of integrity and a man after God's own heart. Mr. Cooper was a loving husband, devoted father, son and brother.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, April Cooper; daughters, Natalie Marie Miller and her husband, Steve of Orlando, Fla., and Rachel Renee' Cooper, of Orlando, Fla.; mother, Charlene Cooper of Allen, Texas; sisters, Lutricia Merritt and her husband, Gary of Freeland, Minn., Katherine Franceschina and her husband, Rob of Temperance, Minn., DeLinda Cooper of South Riding, Va.; and Rowena Sanders and her husband, Chester of Lucas, Texas; and nephews and nieces, Thomas Merritt, Christopher Merritt, Kassey Carney, Candice Sanders and Katie Sanders.

The family received friends from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Apex Funeral Home. Burial followed in Apex Cemetery.

Kirk Edward Foster
July 15, 1937-Jan. 6, 2006

Kirk Foster, 68, of Cary, died Jan. 6, 2006.

He was born and raised in the small town of Winlock, Wash., by Walter and Mildred "Mim" Foster with his older brother Paul. After living in Ohio and Michigan, during which time he married and had two children, he settled in Cary in 1967 and made it home for him and his family. He had a long and distinguished service with the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.

After retiring from the EPA, he worked for several more years for the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Outside of his career he had many passions including photography, carpentry, mechanical and electrical tinkering, gardening and the study of history. He was also an active member of Greenwood Forest Baptist Church for many years.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 43 years, Mary; a daughter Renee and her fiancé Bo Hemphill, a son Robin with wife Susan, his new granddaughter Amelia, and his brother Paul. He also leaves behind a large family of relatives and many friends and neighbors who loved him dearly. Kirk wanted everyone to know that he "Loved life and had a good one." A memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary. The Revs. Randy Sherron and Luther Brewer officiated.

The family received friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Greenwood Forest Baptist Church Building Fund, 110 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511.

William 'Dub' Wilson
William "Dub" Wilson, 78, of Apex died Jan. 8, 2006, after an extended illness. Mr. Wilson's special hobby was fishing.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, in Martha's Chapel Christian Church Cemetery.

Mr. Wilson is survived by his sisters, Violet Markham and Clariene Kidd, both of Durham; brother, Eddie Wilson and wife, Peggy, of Durham; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice, 3117 Poplarwood Court, Suite 114, Raleigh, NC 27604.

Gloria Chavez Stephens
Sofia Gloria Chavez de'Stephens, 79, of Apex, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, in WakeMed Cary Hospital. A funeral mass will be Friday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church, 804 High House Road, Cary. The burial will be in Apex Cemetery.

She is survived by her daughter, Rosa M. Stephens; grandchildren, Mara Anthony Stephens, and Jeremy M. Marquardt and wife, Erinn Marquardt; and great-grandchildren, Brandon, Joshua and Chase.

Arrangements are entrusted with Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55) Apex.

Marguerite Hays Davis
Marguerite Hays Davis, 91, resident of Morrisville since 1954, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006.

A funeral service was held 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, in Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Davis is survived by her daughter, Patsy Waller of Swansboro; son, Jerry Davis of Greensboro; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard Davis; and sons, Ted and Fred Davis.

The family received friends prior to the service.

Angela Echavarria
Mrs. Angela Echavarria, 51, passed away on Jan. 10, 2006. She was born in Newburgh, N.Y., on Nov. 19, 1954. She lived much of her life in New York and moved to Cary in 1996.

Angela worked as a homemaker and volunteered at her sons' schools. Angela enjoyed decorative painting, which she learned while living in Cary. Her strength and grace were inspirational to all of her friends and family.

Angela is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Miguel, and sons, Michael and Gregory. She is also survived by her mother, Dolores Martello of Cary; her sisters, JeanMarie Martello and JoAnn Perrone of New York; and many adoring family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Vincent A. Martello, formerly of White Plains, N.Y., in 1988.

A funeral mass and celebration of Angela's life was held on Friday, Jan. 13, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 804 High House Road, Cary. Following the service, she was laid to rest at Wake Memorial Park in Cary.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary.

Ernest Baker Howell
Ernest Baker Howell, 81, of 1924 N.C. 55 West, Apex, died Sunday morning, Jan. 15, 2006, at home. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army, and a World War II veteran. He retired from Lufkin Rule Co. with 20 years of service. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church.

A service celebrating his life and home going was held on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Lalon Barnes and Tommy Smith will officiate the services. Burial will follow in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley P. Howell; five sons, Ernest B. Howell Jr., and Kenneth A. Howell, both of the home, Timothy D. Howell and wife Donna of Apex, Jerry N. Howell of Arizona and Marty R. Howell of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a daughter, Cindy Gregg and husband Marion of Florence, S.C. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday Jan. 16, at the Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex, and other times at the home.

Gregg Anthony Cole
Gregg Anthony Cole, 44, of Raleigh died Jan. 14, 2006.

Gregg was born on Oct. 7, 1961, in Gouverneur, N.Y. He attended Middletown schools in New York and entered the U.S. Army after graduation. He moved to Cary in 1987.

Surviving are his daughter, who was the light of his life, Marissa Elizabeth Cole, and Marissa's mother, Norma Bolton, both of Cary; his two stepchildren, Suzanne Bolton and Keith Bolton of Cary; his mother, Trudy Mele of Harrisville, N.Y.; his brothers, Charles E. Cole of Harrisville, N.Y., Christopher Cole of Stantonsburg, N.C., Tracy Cole of Rosendale, N.Y., Scott Cole of Potsdam, N.Y., Clifford Mele of Harrisville, N.Y., and Clifford Cole of Harrisville, N.Y.; his paternal grandmother, Alice Bacon Cole of Raleigh; his aunts, Delight Lee of Raleigh and Keitha Peabody of N.Y.; and his uncle, Clifford Deamer of N.Y.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gardner Cole; his maternal grandparents, John Edward Weaver, Virginia Weaver Deamer, and Clifford B. Deamer; his paternal grandfather, Maurice A. Cole; and maternal great-grandmother, Anna Luther.

A memorial service was held Tuesday evening, Jan. 17, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary. The family received friends immediately following the service.

Mary Bodie Karpf
Mary Bodie Karpf, of Apex, 101, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, following a brief illness at Wake Med Cary Hospital.

She was born Sept. 24, 1904, in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., to the late John and Barbara Bodie, who had come to America from Hungary. She was predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth Conklin and Helen Lent, and one brother, John.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Lorenz W. Karpf Jr. and three of her sons, Laverne, Calvin and Lorenz and one grandson, William Karpf. She is survived by her children, Arthur and wife Helen of Hamden, Conn., Theodore and wife Jeannette of Newington, Conn., and Titusville, Fla., Joseph and wife Mildred of Brentwood, N.Y., David and wife Lorraine of Cary, Martha Edquist and husband Roy of Port Orange, Fla., Dwight and wife Annette of Calverton, N.Y., Barbara Wetterau and husband Jim of the home, and Donald and wife Mary of Jacksonville, Fla. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Rosalie Karpf of Baldwin, N.Y., 31 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Monday morning, Jan. 16, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary with the Rev. Walter Ross of Colonial Baptist Church, Cary, officiating. Additional services and burial will be held later in the week in Glen Head, N.Y., and Pinelawn Cemetery on Long Island, N.Y.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary.

Thelma H. DeVol
Thelma Elmeda Hovermale DeVol, 94, of Cary, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006, at WakeMed Cary Hospital.

A native of Brunswick, Md., she was born on Sept. 12, 1911, to the late Howard Burman and Victoria Wilson Hovermale. In addition to her parents, her husband, Morris B. DeVol, brother, Howard W. Hovermale and sister, Ashby E. Schulze also preceded her in death.

Thelma was the kind of person you knew had "never met a stranger." She was someone who freely gave to others, regardless of whether they deserved it, her total and unconditional love. Slow to criticize and devoted to her family; it is these qualities we will remember far above her worldly accomplishments.

During her career, Thelma worked for the U.S. government as a secretary for the Department of Labor. She was affiliated with the Methodist faith and was an avid animal lover.

Surviving are her sister-in-law, Rita D. Hovermale of Cary; niece, Laura B. Harris and husband, Josh Harris of Clayton; nephews, Howard S. Hovermale and wife, Amy Hovermale of Angier and Gary R. Hovermale and wife, Sue of Wadesboro. Also surviving are seven great-nieces and great-nephews and her beloved Yorkshire Terrior, "Happy," who brought so much joy and companionship into her life.

A memorial service was held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the chapel of Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary. The Rev. Dr. H. William Green officiated. Burial will follow at a later date in Park Heights Cemetery, Brunswick, Md.

The family received friends one hour prior to the memorial service, on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the funeral home.

John F. Earo
John F. Earo, 56, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2006. He was born and raised in Wilmington, Del., on July 13, 1949, to Philip and Dorothy Evans Earo. John is survived by his wife of 36 years, Margaret "Peggy" Earo of Cary; daughter, Autumn Williams and son-in-law, Trevor Williams of Apex; son, John Phillip-Zdeb Earo of Cary; mother, Dorothy Earo of Cary; cousin, Carolyn Stanley of Middletown, Del.

A memorial mass was held at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 20, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Burial followed at Wake Memorial Park, Cary.

The family received friends at a reception immediately following the service at the church.

Charlotte Marie Martin West
Charlotte Marie Martin West, 78, of 6513 Prestwick Place, Fuquay-Varina, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at home surrounded by her family. A funeral service was held at noon Thursday, Jan. 19, at Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church, 301 N. Woodrow St., Fuquay-Varina, conducted by Dr. Chris Conner. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

She is survived by her children, Frank West and wife, Diane of Garner, David West and wife, Deborah, Camille Rogers and husband, Lee, all of Fuquay-Varina, Jane Phillips and husband, Darryl of Raleigh, Amy Honeycutt and husband Ben of Fuquay-Varina; and sister Phyllis Bernstein and husband, Bill of Winston-Salem. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Trevor West, Emily Adams, Amelia Adams, Keith Phillips, Sarah Jane Honeycutt and David Honeycutt; step grandchildren, Kristie Akins, Jim Bullock, Chase Rogers and Kohel Rogers; and step great-grandchildren, TJ Bullock, Lizzie Akins and Will Akins. She is preceded in death by her husband, Furman Braxton West Jr., and her brother, Roy B. Martin.

The family received friends Wednesday evening, Jan. 18, at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex.

Alan 'Big Al' Weed
Alan "Big Al" Weed, 45, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, at his home in Cary. He is survived by his parents, James and Sharon (Dalton) Weed, Newark Valley, N.Y.; son, Stephan and the mother of his son, Gayle (Chirila) Weed, both of Cary; sister, Kelly MacInnis, Dove Canyon, Calif.; brother, John Chrystler, Binghamton, N.Y.; maternal grandmother, Eunice Dalton, Zephyrhills, Fla.; several aunts, uncles and cousins; his good friend and companion, Patricia Heasty; and his good friends from high school to the present, Tony D'Angelo, Camillus, N.Y., and Patrick Martin, Wilmington, Del.

Alan was born on Jan. 4, 1961, in Ithaca, N.Y. He was a graduate of Newark Valley High School, earned his associate degree in restaurant management for Morrisville College (1981) and bachelor of professional studies in business management from State University of New York, Rome/Utica, N.Y. in 1983. In 2003, he fulfilled his lifetime dream when his cookbook, "All-Pro Cooking for Regular Guys," was published. Following many years in restaurant management, he developed a great interest in the wine industry and entered the wine sales field. He also provided catering and private chef services with the "Two Pals Everyday Gourmet" firm. Al was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and enjoyed spending time with his son, Stephan, at many Sunday sporting events. He was a devoted father, son, brother and friend to all who knew him. Our hearts are broken and he will be greatly missed by all.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 21, at the MacPherson Funeral Home, Newark Valley, N.Y., with the Rev. Philip Jordan officiating. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to the Newark Valley Booster Club, P.O. Box 547, Newark Valley, NY 13811 in loving memory of Alan Weed.

Brenda Harris Clark
Brenda Harris Clark, 62, of 1025 Ivy Lane, Cary, passed away at her home Monday night, Jan. 17, 2006. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Apex Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Apex Cemetery.

She is survived by her loving husband, John C. Clark, and was a devoted mother to her four surviving children, Karen King and husband, Curtis, David Painter, Lori Podhany and husband, Dan, and Lisa Smith and husband, Scott. She was the beloved grandmother of her 12 grandchildren, CJ King, Ashley Painter, Brittany Painter, David Painter Jr., Kelly Mabry, Travis Mabry, Corey Smith, Samantha Smith, John Clark IV, Brett Clark, Ernest VanWagenen and Angel VanWagenen; and sisters, Elaine Cartwright and Gwen Speckman.

Brenda was truly loved by all who knew her. She touched the souls of many lives which will be forever changed. No family could ever ask for a more dedicated wife, mother, grandmother or friend. She will never by forgotten in our hearts or left behind in our memories. We promise to love you forever and spread your joy and laughter until we meet again. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 20, at Apex funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex.

Lamon Burney Adams
Lamon Burney Adams, 95, of 3229 Old Holly Springs-Apex Road, Apex, died Thursday morning, Jan. 19, at WakeMed Cary Hospital. He was a retired tobacco farmer and a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

A service celebrating his life and homegoing was held on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m. in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55) in Apex. Burial followed in the Apex Cemetery.

Pastor Tim Batten officiated.

Mr. Adams is survived by two daughters, Catherine Fields and husband, Junior, of Apex, and Sue Adams of Morrisville; two sons, Billy Adams, and Terry Adams and wife, Debbie, all of Apex; two sisters, Nora Lynch of Winston-Salem, and Bonnie Bell Love of Pilot Mountain; a brother, Clayton Adams of Laurinburg; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

The Adams family received friends from noon until the funeral service on Sunday at the Apex Funeral Home.
