Billie Jo Dailey Murphy

Billie Jo Dailey Murphy, 68, of Etowah, passed away Tuesday morning, Nov. 9, 1999, at a Chattanooga hospital.
A native and resident of Etowah for most of her life, she was a former resident of Monroe County.
She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, a former two-term county commissioner, a Red Cross swimming teacher and a coordinator for Red Cross blood drives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George W. and Mae Manis Dailey; two brothers, Gordon L. Dailey and R.B. Dailey; and two sisters, Jackie Micras and Sue Weaver.
Survivors include her husband, David C. Murphy of Etowah; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Debbie Murphy of Friendsville and Scott and Mary Jane Murphy of Etowah; five grandchildren, Tyson, Wesley, Cody, Michael and Andrea Murphy; one brother, Ray Dailey of Kingston; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Wednesday in the south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Yeaney officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday in New Zion Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Lung Association.

Ada Mae Henderson Ricks, 89, of Newport, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County.
A native of McMinn County and former resident of Athens, she was a member of North Athens Baptist Church. A daughter of the late James Madison and Alice Henderson, she was preceded in death by her husband Felix Grundy Ricks; four sons, Earl Eugene Ricks, Virgil C. Ricks, James Douglas Ricks and Jack Oliver Ricks.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Hugh and Louise “Betty” Ricks of Newport; one sister, Hazel McPhail of Niota; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with Dr. Bob Kerr and the Rev. Charles McGill officiating. Burial will be in the Upper Spring Creek Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Victor Ricks, Joshua Brown, James Henager, David Turner, Corbin Young and Harry May.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Jackie L. Newman, 65, of Decatur, passed away Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at her residence.
A daughter of the late Burch and Essie Stokes, she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Stokes; one sister, Marie Stokes; and a granddaughter, April Bryant. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Newman of Decatur; two daughters and sons-in-law, Roberta and Paul Ferguson and Pam and Tommy Webb, all of Decatur; two brother, Burch Stokes Jr. of Dixon, Mo. and Wallace Stokes of Sweetwater; two sisters, Patsy Stokes Parker of Dallas, Ga. and Angie Trusley of Decatur; four grandchildren, Jason Webb, Keith Webb, Chris Bryant, all of Athens and Amanda Bryant of Decatur; two great-grandchildren, Cody Webb and Haley Bryant; a special niece, Sue Ricker of Decatur; two special sisters-in-law, Betsy Stokes of Athens and Julie Swafford; and several other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Plaster officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Garden.
Pallbearers will be nephews Tony Stokes, Scott Stokes, Jeff Stokes, Mike McGrew, LeBron Stokes, Alen Beilfuss, James Trusley Jr. and Wallace Stokes Jr.

B. Irene Padgett, 74, of Decatur, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at her residence.
A member of the Decatur United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Meigs County VFW and the Obedience Club of Chattanooga, she was a daughter of the late Arther and Opal Palm.
Survivors include her husband Jack Padgett of Decatur; one son, Guy N. Padgett of Chattanooga; one sister, Betty Gibson of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Thursday in the Bowers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Blackshear officiating. Burial will be in Tampa, Fla.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday prior to the services at the funeral home.

David Edward Thornton

David Edward Thornton, 75, of Decatur, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at his residence.
A World War II Army veteran, he was a son of the late Albertie and Ida Thornton.
Survivors include his wife, Dovey Thornton of Decatur; two sons, David Anthony Thornton and Alton Floyd Thornton, both of Decatur; two daughters, Sharon Diane Whitehead and Sandra Jane Hale, both of Decatur; one brother, James Harold Thornton of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters, Bessie “Sue” Ness and Judith “Judi” Maness, both of Bradeton, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
There will be no formal visitation or funeral services held. Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery.

Howard Thomas Miller, 78, of Athens, died Monday afternoon, Nov. 8, 1999, at National Health Care Center in Athens.
A lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late George Edward and Maude McKeehan Miller. Retired from the City of Athens Public Works Department after 16 years, he was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Morrow Miller of Athens; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Philip Failyer of Gainesville, Ga. and Sherry and C.L. Swafford of Athens; one son, Thom Miller of Athens; two granddaughters, Julie Ellison and Beth Swafford; three grandsons, Brook Hammontree, Jake Miller and Drew Swafford; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Atkins and the Rev. Don Wattenbarger officiating.
Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Mary Lou Bowers Wampler, 84, of Etowah, passed away early Monday morning, Nov. 8, 1999, at Etowah Health Care Center.
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a charter member of Englewood First Church of God and WBG and was a Sunday school teacher. A
daughter of the late John and Ollie White Bowers, she was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Wampler; one son, Roy Lynn Wampler; and a son-in-law, Billy C. Bishop.
Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Jeanette Bishop of Athens and Martha “Billie” and Arnold Tallent of Etowah; one son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Odene and Betty Faye Wampler of Springfield, Mo.; nine grandchildren, Lynn Wampler, Doug Wampler, Gail McConkey, Terri Evans, Kim Jiries, Kelly Pickle, Phil Wampler, Don Wampler and Claudia Brashler; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in McMinn Memory Gardens.

Pearl Sloan Boruff, 92, of the Head of Creek community in Sweetwater, passed away Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at NHC Convalescent Home in Athens.
A member of New Bethany Baptist Church, she was preceded in death by her husband, D.B. Boruff.
Survivors include three daughters and one son-in-law, Beatrice Green of Athens, Margaret Lewis of Jasper and Jannah and Doyle Hicks of Englewood; one son and daughter-in-law, William and Aileen Boruff of Sevierville; 12 grandchildren, Shirley Horton, Carolyn Sewell, Patsy Dunn, Ronnie and Jim Boruff, Joetta Stewart, Eddie, Gary and Don Lewis, Jan Davis, C.J. Hicks Zwiep and Donna Hicks; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were 8 p.m. Sunday in the Sweetwater Memory Chapel with the Rev. Freddie Crabtree and the Rev. Keith Whited officiating. Burial was 10 a.m. Monday in Sweetwater Valley Memorial Park.
