Arthur Fowler Thomasson

Arthur Fowler Thomasson, 70, of Cleveland, passed away early Thursday, June 17, 1999, in a local hospital.
A veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean Conflict, he was awarded the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He was employed with Shaw Industries for 33 years before his retirement. A son of the late Arthur and Mary Lou Thomasson, he was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Mary L. Thomasson of Cleveland; three daughters and two sons-in-law; Olivia Kyle of Charleston, Vivian and Teri Donn of Morgan Hill, Calif., and Mary Ann and Tim Rymer of Douglasville, Ga.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Mike and Glenda Thomasson of Reliance and Doug Thomasson of Maryville; nine grandchildren, Amanda, Andrea and Matthew Kyle, Jennifer and Benjamin Donn, Alex and Nathan Rymer and Derrick and Tanner Thomasson; and one great-grandchild, Hayden Kyle.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Fritts officiating. Burial will follow in Hilcrest Memorial Gardens with military honors.
Pallbearers will be Darrell Eckstein, Mike Hall, Ronnie Glover, Ronald Payne, Jerry Johns and Eddie Reeves.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home in Cleveland.
Shirley Ann Trentham Kelley

Shirley Ann Trentham Kelley, 63, of Niota, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999.
A native of Newport, she was a former resident of Charleston, Wingate, N.C., Louisville, Ky., Kingston, Ga., and Knoxville. A daughter of the late Aden and Pearl Leclair Trentham, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens and the T.E.L. Sunday School Class.
Survivors include her husband of 47 years, the Rev. Robert D. “Bob” Kelley of Niota; one son, Robert Darrell Kelley of Athens; one daughter, Susan Kelley Knight of Niota; one grandson, Matthew Knight of Niota; one granddaughter, Holly Aleese Knight of Niota; one sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Robert Mayes of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Ansell T. Baker and Dr. Carlos Peterson officiating.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, at Niota Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday prior to the services at the funeral home.

Iva Lee Black Bunch, 85, of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, June 16, 1999, in a local hospital.
A daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Black, she was of the Protestant faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Bunch; three sister, Frances Lawson, Loray Killen and Myrtle Bonner; and two brothers, Johnny and Sammie Black.
Survivors include three sister, Doris Geren and Bertha Cross, both of Cleveland, and Barbara Clemons of Benton Station; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Dr. Reed Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery in Etowah.

Meda Rogers Shell

Meda Rogers Shell, 84, of Athens, died Tuesday morning June 15, 1999, at Woods Memorial Hospital.
A native of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Luther P. and Rena B. Rogers. She was a long-time member of Lakeview Baptist Church where she worked with various children’s programs over the years. Her last employment was with the Agricultural Extension Service through the University of Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nathaniel C. Shell on October 24, 1988; one grandson, David Shell; and her brothers and sisters, Walt Rogers,
Virgie Jones, Roy Rogers, Faye Rogers, J.P. Rogers, Floyd Rogers, David “Bun” Rogers, Dennie Holland, Newell Rogers and Iva Campbell Hall.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Jeanie Shell of Cleveland and Wayne and Juanita Shell of Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Bruce Rutherford of Pigeon Forge; five sisters, Stella “Peg” Amsier of Clinton Township, Mich., Lela Gardner of Napa, Calif., twin sister Veda Pelfrey of Hixson, Ann Moore of Hisxon, and Nell McKeehan of Athens; eight grandchildren, Roger Shell, Mike Shell, Sandi Kay Lovelace, Susan Patterson, Sheryl Shell, Debbi Connelly, Keith Shell and Lee Rutherford; 13 great-grandchildren, Nathan Shell, Tara Shell Brown, Waylon Shell, Jeremy and Krissy Gibson, Jesse Lovelace, Tyler Howard, Paul Hunter and Tia Patterson, Misty, Natoshia, and Kayla Mikel, and Chad Shell; two great-great-grandchildren, Camden and Griffin Brown; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Homer Belcher, the Rev. Van Elkins, and Bruce
Rutherford officiating. Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Idlewild Cemetery.

Steven Christopher Hodgins, 32, of Englewood, died Tuesday, June 15, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Cleveland, he was a resident of McMinn County for most of his life and was a member of New Zion Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Gene and Elsie Hodgins; and one sister, Megan Hoffman.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Casteel Hodgins of Englewood; three sons, Timothy, Tyler and Devon Hodgins; one daughter, Brooklynne Hodgins; one stepdaughter, Ashley Hawkins of Englewood; one stepson, Michael Hawkins of Englewood; his mother and stepfather, Alicia and J.D. Hoffman of Bronson, Kan.; his father and stepmother, Wendell and Norma Hodgins of Dandridge; his maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Lula Williams and Midge and Robert McCaslin, all of Etowah; his great-grandmother, Edith Jones of Riceville; one brother, Joe Hodgins of Dandridge; one sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Shane Ryther of Overland Park, Kan.; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Charles and Bena Casteel of Englewood.

Dovie Baker Ingram, 96, of Athens, died early Wednesday morning, June 16, 1999.
A native of McMinn County, she was a member of Bible Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents Porter and Susie Jones Baker; her husband, William Ingram on Feb. 14, 1985; and five brothers, Floyd, Richmond, Gene, Clarence and Lee Baker.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday in McMinn Memory Gardens with the Rev. Clifford Ingram officiating.
Pallbearers will be Lewin Shore, Charlie Dennis, Roy Baker, Tommy Nelson, Curtis Trotter and Lloyd Matthews.

Dianne Sneed, 38, of Athens, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was an employee of Plastic Industries, Inc., for 11 years and was a member of Marshall Hill Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Swafford; her grandfather, Willard Swafford; and her grandparents, Gene and Fanny Wilson.
Survivors include her husband, Jackie Sneed of Athens; four daughters and one son-in-law, Stephanie Sneed, Jaclyn and Adam Cooley, Tiffany Sneed and Melanie Sneed, all of Athens; one granddaughter, Caitlyn Dianne Sneed of Athens; her parents, the Rev. Ralph and Geneva Wilson Swafford of Athens; one sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Roger Ogle of Cleveland; one brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Helen Swafford of Calhoun; her paternal grandmother, Ida Womac Swafford of Athens; and several nieces and nephews.

Ondus H. McKenzie Jr.

Ondus H. McKenzie Jr., 63, of Panama City, Fla., died Sunday night, June 13, 1999, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville.
A native of McMinn County, he was a former resident of Englewood. He was a son of the late Ondus H. Sr., and Irene Lacewell McKenzie and was preceded in death by one son, Claude David McKenzie.
He was a member of Englewood United Methodist Church and was a grading and excavation contractor until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Billie Chance McKenzie of Panama City, Fla.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tina and Robert Cheatham of N. Augusta, S.C., and Tanya and Lawrence McClendon of Soddy Daisy; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Connie McKenzie of Etowah; two granddaughters, Amy McConkey and Madison McClendon; and one grandson, David McKenzie.

Mildred Candler Hitch

Mildred Candler Hitch, 96, of Shannondale Retirement Community in Knoxville, died Monday, June 14, 1999.
A native of Athens and McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Herschel Mahoney and Effie Ellis Candler.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Dooley Hitch, an Athens attorney.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was active in United Methodist Women. She had served as a former President of United Methodist Women and was honored in 1981 as United Methodist Woman of the Year. She was also selected as Holston Conference Woman of the Year by the Cleveland District where she had served in various offices for 12 years.
She attended Virginia Intermont and George Peabody Colleges and in 1986, she was awarded the Mary Sullivan Award by Tennessee Wesleyan College.
She was a former member of the McMinn County Historical Society, Athens Browning Circle, President of the Advisory Council of Tennessee Wesleyan College and a charter member of McMinn County Living Heritage Museum.
Survivors include one son, Candler Dooley Hitch of Montreat, N.C.; two grandsons, Christopher Dooley Hitch of Cary, N.C., and Richard Wilson Hitch of Dallas, Texas; and two great grandchildren, David Patterson Hitch and Sarah Francis Hitch of Cary, N.C.
Graveside service and interment
of cremains will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Athens with the Rev. Dr. T. Hartley Hall IV of Black Mountain, N.C., officiating.

Jessie Mae Newell Tugwell, 76, of Athens, died Sunday morning, June 13, 1999, at her residence.
A native of Old Hickory, she was a resident of Chattanooga for 40 years and had been a resident of Athens for ten years. A daughter of the late William and Margaret Wilson Newell, she was an artist and sculptor. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, The H.O.P.E. Center and Athens Regional Medical Center.
She was a member of Halcyon Book Club and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she was a member of the Episcopal Church Women. She was prededed in death by her husband, William D. Tugwell Jr.
Survivors include one son, William D. Tugwell III of Reliance; one daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Dr. Carlos Peterson of Athens; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy and Carl Moore of Brentwood and Nancy and Bob Rhodes of Paris; one brother and three sisters-in-law, William and Edna Newell of Donaldson, Dorothy Pilurs of Orange Beach, Ala., and Nancy Tugwell of Madison; three grandchildren and spouses, April and Ben Linton, Ginny Peterson and Emily and Jesse Contreras; two great-granddaughters, Aven Linton and Adia Contreras; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Michael Doty officiating.
