George Thomas “G.T.” Parris, 55, of Charleston, died Friday evening, June 11, 1999, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
He was an employee of United Parcel Service for 22 years.
Survivors include his wife, Gail Parris of Charleston; one son, Terry Parris of Raleigh, N.C., one daughter, Lisa Parris of Hyattville, Md.; his father, T.G. Parris of Etowah; three sisters, Eloise Moore of Etowah, Mary Drake of Atlanta, Ga., and Odessa Ross of San Antonio, Texas; and two brothers, Troy Parris of Detroit, Mich., and Odell Parris of Cleveland, Ohio.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Watson Chapel A.M.E. Zion church in Charleston with the Rev. Robert Benton officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Garden in Charleston.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Patton Funeral Home in Cleveland.

Dyeo Lowe
Died: 06/12/1999
Dyeo Lowe, 72, of Greasy Creek near Reliance, died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at his home.
A son of the late James Henry and Betty Wright Lowe, he was a former member of the U.S. Forestry Service and the Polk County Road Department. He was preceded in death by one son, Patrick Lowe.
Survivors include two daughters, Kay Perian of Benton and Joyce Scroggs of Etowah; one son, Clifford Lowe of Reliance; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Iva Jenkins of Delano and Mildred Gurly of Chattanooga.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Gregg officiating. Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Greasy Creek Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday prior to the funeral services at the funeral home in Benton.
Helen Trotter Miller
Died: 04/13/1999
Helen Trotter Miller, 78, of Athens, died Tuesday morning, April 13, 1999, at her residence.
A native of Maryville, she was a daughter of the late John Thaddeus and Ollie Matthews Trotter. She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. “Bill” Miller on Nov. 1, 1991; and by her brothers and sisters, Hugh Trotter, Ona T. Ray, Earl Trotter, Jonnie T. Robinson, Louise T. Johnson and Mary T. Davies.
She was an active member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church where she had served on the administrative board. She was a member of the Mildred Sullins Circle, the United Methodist Women and was chairman of the live Nativity Scene committee for 25 years.
She had served as dietitian at Tusculum College, Home Economics Instructor at Tennessee Wesleyan College and served as a GED teacher at the Tennessee Technology Center in Athens.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Miller, of Rockwood; one son, John Miller of Athens; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Margaret and Kenneth Abbott of Maryville, Jane and Louis Rullman of Cincinnati, Ohio and Barbara Engel of Hamilton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Keith Memorial United Methodist Church with Dr. Stella M. Roberts, Lay Leader J. Neal Ensminger and the Rev. Kenneth Abbott Jr., officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
The body will be in state at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Thursday where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The body will also be in state at the church for one hour prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Shirel Grimmett, James R. Nelson, David Ball, Mike Bonnett, Thad Rullman, Adam Dowers, Tom Abbott and Mike Engel.

Mary Della Lee Hunt Mosier, 70, of Athens, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville.
A native of Spring City, she was a daughter of the late John L. and Emma Lee True Mosier.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo Jackson Mosier and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Ann Walker of Athens; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Carlos and Shirley Mosier of Varnell, Ga., David Mosier of Athens and Buford and Sandy Mosier of Athens; two brothers, Joseph Hunt of Decatur and Austin Hunt of Sweetwater; one sister, Erma Morrow of Chattanooga; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ladye Ruth Mathis, 93, of Etowah, died April 14, 1999, at Etowah Health Care Center.
A native of McMinn County, she was a resident of Etowah for most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Horace and Emaline Green Reynolds and was a member of Brookhill Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas L. “Shorty” Mathis.
Survivors include two nieces, Sandra Reynolds of Belmont, Calif., and Susan Turner of Etowah; one nephew, Tim Whitaker of Etowah; and one sister-in-law, Reba Reynolds of Etowah.
Graveside services were 2 p.m. Sunday in Green Hill Cemetery with the Rev. R.B. Bryan officiating.

Milford Eugene "Mr. D" Dennis

Milford Eugene “Mr. D” Dennis, 69, of Athens, died Saturday, April 17, 1999, in Park West Hospital in Knoxville.
A native of Spring City, he had lived in McMinn County for several years and was a graduate of McMinn County High School. He was a retired maintenance supervisor at the Life Care Center of Athens and was in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Dennis; and one brother, Donald Dennis. He was an active member of the North Athens Baptist Church having served as a deacon and a Sunday school class teacher.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby “Irene” Dennis of Athens; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Audrey Dennis and Tracy and Wanda Dennis, all of Athens; his mother, Mae Lee Dennis Hitch of Sweetwater; two brothers, Conley and Glenn Dennis, both of Athens; three sisters, Thelma Smith and Elizabeth Robinson, both of Sweetwater and Maxine Barkett of Rossville, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home with Dr. Bob Kerr officiating. Burial was in McMinn Memory Gardens.

William Arlen Ables

William Arlen Ables, 69, of Athens, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native of McMinn County, he was an M.P. in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was an employee of Beaunit in Etowah until it closed and later worked for TVA until his retirement. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph, Ray, Charles and Roy Ables; and his parents, Charley and Burnella Overstreet Ables. He was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Charles Ables of Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Tracy Lee of Ooltewah; one granddaughter, Ashley Pickett of Ooltewah; two brothers, J.W. Ables of Athens and C.L. Ables of Etowah; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home with Pastor Don Glenn officiating. Burial will be in Beta Cemetery in Decatur.

Richard L. Monroe
Died: 04/17/1999
Richard L. Monroe, 81, of Riceville, died Saturday afternoon, April 17, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Murfreesboro.
He was a native of McMinn County and a former resident of Detroit, Mich. A son of the late Marion Newt and Mary Jane Wattenbarger Monroe, he was retired from General Motors and served as a staff sergeant during World War II where he received three Bronze Stars.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve Pauline Swierk Monroe on Feb. 23, 1988; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Mark and Della Monroe and George and Aline Monroe; and two brothers-in-law, J.D. Brown and Jim Jones.
Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Ulysess and Vivian Monroe of Athens; three sisters, Ida Rose Jones and Anna Rae Brown, both of Athens, and Edna Bruhin of Bristol; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Woody Martin and Dan Early officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Tranquility Cemetery with full military honors conducted by The Volunteer State Honor Guard.

Myrtle Gentry Chandler Arnold, 76, of Athens, died Friday, April 16, 1999, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native of Kentucky and resident of Athens for the past 45 years, she was a daughter of the late Gerdine and Emily Messer Gentry. She was preceded in death by her first husband James “Jim” Ernest Chandler and former husband, L.R. “Ross” Arnold. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Phyllis Chandler Chrisman and Don Chrisman and Beverly Gail Arnold Trew, all of Athens; one brother, Ottis Gentry of Athens; two sisters, Gearldine Brown of Decatur and Bonnie Jean Guffey of Athens; six grandchildren, Billy Don Chrisman, Mike Chrisman, Craig Chrisman, Mellisa Trew, Chris Trew, and Michelle Trew; three great-grandchildren, Dallas Chrisman, Travis Chrisman, and Megan Chrisman; and several nieces and nephews.

Lillie Mae Weeks, 83, of Etowah, died, Sunday, April 18, 1999, at McMinn Memorial Nursing Home in Etowah.
A native of Murphy, N.C., she was a resident of McMinn County for 65 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl W. Weeks; her parents, Assie and Nancy Cook Young; and one daughter, Elvella Weeks. She was a member of Etowah Church of Christ.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Othella and Marvin Torbett and Rosella and Jim Gann, all of Etowah; three sons and daughters-in-law, Woodward and Sharon Weeks of Windham, Ohio, Edward and Shirley Weeks and Walter and Debbie Weeks, all of Etowah; her grandchildren, Jeff Torbett, Randy Gann, Joy Buckner, Lisa Weeks, Edward Weeks, Lucas Weeks, Scott Weeks, Jason Weeks, Robin Williams, Connie Hamilton, Chris Price and Jackie Goins; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Vienna Willix of Hickory, N.C.; one brother, Elmer Young of Rocky Face, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Ventola Brendle Myers, 89, of Whitwell and formerly of McMinn County, died Friday, April 16, 1999, at NHC Healthcare in Dunlap.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. D.P. and Mary Ellen Presnell Brendle; one brother, Dr. L.A. Brendle; and her husband, Carl Myers.
She was a 40-year member of Red Bank United Methodist Church where she was in the Margaret Helms Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, and the Betsy Ross Eastern Star. She was a graduate of T.W.C. and U.T.K.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ellen Hoge of Whitwell; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. CDT Monday in the chapel of Ewton Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Everhart officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. EDT in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Athens.

A native of Blacksburg, Va., he was former resident of Floyd, Va. A resident of Polk County for 17 years, he was a Navy veteran having served in Vietnam.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Hester Lowry Hubbard; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Charles and Stella Waldrop.

James A. “Buddy” Walden, 50, of Athens, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native and former resident of Meigs County, he was a resident of McMinn County for the past 19 years and was an employee of Don Harrill Construction Company. A son of the late James Arthur and Haley Magalie West Walden Sr., he was a member of Maple Grove Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nettie Francis Walden and Tennia Gennoe; and three brothers, James Richard Walden, James Arthur Walden Jr., and Olif Walden.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Marie Aylor Walden of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Tasha Walden of Decatur; one granddaughter, Amber Walden; one brother, Paul Walden of Ten Mile; four sisters, Margaret Perry of Salem, Va., Marchie Ellison, Marle Carter and Nancy Couch, all of Ten Mile; and several nieces and nephews.

Lucy Shoemaker Harris, 96, of the Goodsprings community near Etowah, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at Asbury Acres Center in Maryville.
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a member of the New Zion Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jess Harris; her parents, William G. and Tex Ann Swenford Shoemaker; one sister, Grace Roberts; and two brothers, Paul and J.C. “Doc” Shoemaker.
Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jean and Quentin Gilliland of Louisville, Betty Griffin of Las Vegas, Nev., and Juanita “Tead” and Dale Everett of Maryville; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Harold and Sue Harris of Etowah and Robert Curtis “Red” and Wynonia Harris of Berea, Ky.; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Neva Mary Wales Webb
Died: 04/20/1999
Neva Mary Wales Webb, 80, of Reliance, died suddenly Tuesday, April 20, 1999, of an apparent heart attack.
Well-known to local fishermen and whitewater enthusiasts, she was the proprietress of the Webb Brothers Store on the Hiwassee River after the death of her husband in 1985. Born in Tangipahoa Parish, La., she moved to Cleveland at the age of 16 where she attended Bradley High School and graduated in 1936. She was a member of the North Cleveland Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold J. Webb Sr.; her parents, Lee and Fannie Wales; three sisters, Louvenia Passman, Irene Wales and Bessie Burt; and three brothers, Burlie, James and Clifton Wales.
Survivors include one son, J. Harold Webb of Reliance; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Vaughan Hyder of Reliance and Marilyn and Michel Rousseau of Lawrenceville, N.J.; three granddaughters, Heather and Hannah Hyder of Reliance and Marielle Rousseau of Lawrenceville, N.J.; her twin sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Warner Wilson of Menlo, Ga.; two other sisters, Ruby Fitzgerald of Baton Rouge, La., and Ruth Lemons of Cleveland; one brother-in-law, Daniel Burt of Cleveland; several nieces and nephews; and many friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home with the Rev. Mitch Maloney and the Rev. C.L. Dixon officiating. Burial will be in the Reliance Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday.

James E. "Jim" Hunter
Died: 4/21/99
James E. “Jim” Hunter, 80, of Athens, passed away Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native of Decatur, he had lived in Ohio for many years before returning to the Athens area. A son of the late Claude and Cora Godsey Hunter, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, John A. Hunter. He was a member of the 63rd Infantry Division and the U.A.W. Local No. 790. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a retired employee of Catepillar and was a member of Marshal Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Nell Hunter of Athens; one stepdaughter, Sandra Ross of Athens; three grandchildren, John A. Ross, Bryan R. Ross, both of Athens and James N. Ross of Riceville; one great-granddaughter, Zoe Michelle Ross; one brother, Felix Hunter of California; one sister, Bess Hunter Russell of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at Ziegler Funeral Home with graveside services following in Cedar Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Hoyle Ellis officiating.
