George W., Woods DDS - Monday, 08 Jul 2002
George W. Wood, DDS, died July 8, 2002. Born near Bigfork, Mont., in 1918, he spent his early years in Kalispell, Mont.He served five years in the US Army and the US Air Force in World War II. He married Grace Scearce in 1942 then attended Whitman College in Walla Walla and the University of Washington School of Dentistry, graduating in 1951. He practiced dentistry in Walla Walla for 30 years before retirement and lived on Whidbey Island for the rest of his life. He and Grace recently celebrated 60 years together.
He is survived by his wife and children: Cynthia Shelton and her husband, John in Langley; Douglas R. Wood, DDS, and his wife LaVonne in Oak Harbor; George S. Wood and his wife Marilyn in Seattle. Three granddaughters Jill Winford, Allison Wood, Jami Belieu; one grandson, Kyl Wood; one great-grandson, Jack Winford; and many nieces and nephews survive.
He had a penchant to join good causes and served in many leadership roles. He was president of Washington Dental Service (first president of the first dental insurance for patients in the United States); Washington State Dental Association; Walla Walla Chamber of Commerce; Walla Walla Rotary Club; Walla Walla Community College (first president and board member for 10 years); and Useless Bay Golf and Country Club. He believed service is the rent you pay for living in a community.
We loved him for his generous and loving spirit, a sense of humor that delighted all who knew him, and his ability to touch so many lives in a meaningful way. He was the light of our lives and we will miss him deeply. A family memorial will be held in the summer.
Pollock, Callum J. Saturday, 06 Jul 2002
Callum J. Pollock died suddenly July 6, 2002. He was born Oct. 22, 1983, in Penzance, England, to Harry and Sue Pollock.
He is survived by his parents, two brothers, a sister and their families and his paternal grandparents. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The family lived on Whidbey Island for a number of years, and had recently moved to Everett. A memorial will be held at 2 p.m., July 15, at Solie Funeral Home, 3301 Colby Avenue, Everett; a reception follows.

Eaton, Vernon Delbert - Friday, 05 Jul 2002
Vernon Delbert Eaton, 72, of Enumclaw, died July 5, 2002, in Bellevue. Vernon was born Nov. 30, 1929, in Terry, Mont., and had lived in Enumclaw for 49 years. He married his wife Helen Dec. 10, 1955.
He was a machinist mate 2nd class in the Navy from 1948 to 1952. Vernon was a retired machinist supervisor from Heath Techna, where worked for over 37 years, since 1993. He was a life member of Crescent Lodge No. 109 where he was master of the lodge five times, designed the pin for their 100-year celebration, and won the youth award from the lodge. He was a member of the Crystal Chapter OES, and was patron 13 times. He was a member of the Shriners, where he worked for the children treated in their hospitals. Vernon won the Grand Cross award for activities in Rainbow. He was a volunteer fireman in Federal Way for seven years.
He enjoyed life thoroughly, always camping, fishing and working in his yard. He loved his children and grandchildren, and will be missed by his family.
Vernon is survived by his wife Helen, of more than 46 years; his sons Delbert (Susan) Eaton of Buckley, Dale (Laurie) Eaton of Enumclaw, Robert Eaton of Puyallup; his daughters Debra (Bob) Walvante of Sachene, Texas, Vivian Robinson of Renton, Robin Helmbolt of Marsing, Idaho; his sisters Margaret (LeRoy) Bodin of Oak Harbor, Dorothy (John) Schulz of Oak Harbor, Francis (Jim) Burns of Mount Vernon; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Eugene and Harold Eaton.
Services will be Thursday, July 11, at 2 p.m., at Enumclaw Masonic Temple. Arrangements by Weeks’ Funeral home of Enumclaw. Memorials can be made to Shriner’s Childrens Hospital: PO Box 2472, Spokane, WA 99210. Or to the American Diabetes Association: 557 Roy Street, Seattle, WA 98109-4219.

Sanford, John Louis - Wednesday, 03 Jul 2002
John Louis Sanford, 63, died July 3, 2002, in Greenbank. He was born Nov. 21, 1938, in Columbus, Ohio, to Louis and Thelma Sanford. He moved to the Northwest from Worthington, Ohio, 36 years ago. He has been a resident of Whidbey Island for the past six years. John served in the United States Air Force. He was an architect and he was a member of the Useless Bay Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Sanford; son, David Sanford and his wife Helena; daughter, Kim Zylstra and her husband Steve; two stepsons, David Rife and his wife Lyn, Brad Rife and his wife Jenny; and nine grandchildren. His parents, Louis and Thelma Sanford, preceded his in death.
Family will receive friends Saturday, July 6, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Useless Bay Country Club. Remembrances may be made to Friends of Home Health and Hospice: PO Box 400, Coupeville, WA 98239.
Arrangements are under the direction of Visser Funeral Home, Langley.

Howard, Thomas William - Wednesday, 03 Jul 2002
Thomas William Howard, 63, died July 3, 2002, at his home in Grayland. He was born April 29, 1939, in Stockton, Calif. He was the beloved husband of Bernita L. Howard and father to Thomas F, Lisa Turpin, John S. and Melissa Rouse. He was a proud grandfather to eight and great-grandfather to one. He retired as a chief petty officer with 24 years service. Tom was a member of Doric Masonic Lodge; a lifetime member of VFW posts 3057 and 9430 and member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Benaron, Lori Ann - Wednesday, 03 Jul 2002
Lori Ann Benaron, 42, of Portola Valley, Calif., died July 3, 2002, after a three-year battle against cancer. She was the sixth generation to live on Whidbey Island. Her fifth and fourth great-grandfathers were Simeon and Thomas Kinney, sea captains out of Nova Scotia, Canada, who came to Whidbey Island in 1852.
Lori was born Aug. 17, 1959, on Whidbey Island. Her family was the most important thing in her life. She is survived by her huband, Dr. David Benaron; two wonderful sons, Isaak, 8, and Britton, 3; mother Arlie Lynch Uptegrove; brother Richard Uptegrove and two nieces and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Edwin Uptegrove. A memorial service was held in California in July so her many friends could celebrate her love of life, her sense of humor and compassion for others. Aug. 21, Lori’s family and friends gathered at her Ebey’s Landing, her favorite beach, to witness the scattering of her ashes in the sea. Christensen, Ruth A. - Monday, 01 Jul 2002
Ruth A. Christensen, 88, long-time resident of Oak Harbor, died at an adult care facility in Oak Harbor on July 1, 2002.
Mrs. Christensen was born in Coleharbor, N.D., on Nov. 7, 1913, to Arthur Schumacher and Bertha (Fox) Schumacher. She attended school in Coleharbor. On April 29, 1935, she married Johannes E. Christensen in Underwood, N.D. Following their marriage, they moved to Oak Harbor in 1936, where the couple became charter members of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. Ruth was employed in the laundry department of the Navy Exchange. She enjoyed gardening and raising her family.
Ruth is survived by her three children, Arliss Christensen and wife Eleanor, and Roger Christensen and wife Sally, all of Oak Harbor, and Gayle Glass of Seattle; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild and two step-great-grandchildren; also, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johannes E. Christensen in 1996, one son, Curtis, as well as by four brothers and two sisters.
A graveside service will be Wednesday, July 3 at 3:30 p.m., at Maple Leaf Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 4:30 p.m. at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, Pastor Laurie Bleakley officiating. Memorials may be made to the Friends of Home Health Care, P.O. Box 400, Coupeville WA 98239; or Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. Arrangements under direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.

Adams, Dorothy Grace - Monday, 01 Jul 2002
Dorothy Grace Adams, 86, 10-year resident of Coupeville, died at Whidbey General Hospital July 1, 2002.
Mrs. Adams was born in Seattle on June 6, 1916, to Claude and Lillian Shinn. She was raised in Centralia, where she graduated from high school. She moved to Long Beach, Calif., where she lived for 40 years and raised three daughters. She worked as a drill press operator for McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft. She moved to Whidbey Island in 1992 where she lived at her home in Admiral’s Cove.
Dorothy is survived by her three daughters, Sharon Hawkins and husband George of Coupeville, Donna Foote and husband Lowell of Phoenix, Ariz., and Barbara Lynn Adams of Pomona, Calif.; six grandchildren, Sheila Wilkinson and husband Mitch in Nevada, Denise Malis and husband John of Phoenix, Ariz., Douglas Foote and wife Cynthia of Anaheim, Calif., Karen Foote of Long Beach, Calif., Matthew Hawkins of Coupeville and Lance Corporal Daniel Hawkins, USMC, in North Carolina; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Sullivan of Tacoma and Virginia Gillis of Steilacoom; also, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services and interment will take place at Rose Hills in Whittier, Calif. Arrangements under direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.

Hardy, Frank - Monday, 01 Jul 2002
Francis Wallace Hardy, 86, died July 1, 2002, of prostate cancer in Coupeville after a long illness. Frank was born June 8, 1916 in Nanaimo, B.C., to Rev. Francis W. Hardy and Ella (Kergin) Hardy.
He grew up in British Columbia and graduated from University of British Columbia in 1940. He met Janet McKellar at UBC: they married in Vancouver in 1942. Frank served with the Canadian Armed Forces in World War II.
Frank and Janet moved to Pullman in 1947. He worked for Western Farmers Association in Sunnyside, Mount Vernon and Montesano, then retired in Coupeville in 1978 where he was active in Lions Club and Whidbey Audubon. Frank spent many happy years fishing in Puget Sound, British Columbia and Westport. He enjoyed classical music and spent a lifetime gardening. He is survived by Janet, his wife of 60 years; son Ron Hardy and wife Beth of Twin Falls, Idaho; daughter Joan Hardy and husband Greg Ruggerone of Kenmore; daughter Judy Hardy of Seattle; son Andrew Hardy of Des Moines; grandchildren Anna, Clare, Amy, Leah, Ally and David; and great-grandson Quinn. The family thanks Dr. Vracin, the personnel of Whidbey General Hospital and Careage of Coupeville. Remembrances suggested to Home Health Care and Hospice of Whidbey.
An open house will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, July 20 at the family home in Coupeville.

Vander Voet, Evalena - Sunday, 30 Jun 2002
Graveside funeral services for Evalena “Eva” Vander Voet will be held Wednesday, July 3 at 12 p.m., at Maple Leaf Cemetery. Memorial services will follow at First Reformed Church at 1 p.m. with Pastor Tad Southard and Rev. Richard Vander Voet officiating. Viewing for family and friends was held at Burley Funeral Chapel on Tuesday.
Evalena “Eva” Vander Voet, 83, died June 30, 2002, at her home in Oak Harbor following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born Oct. 5, 1918, in Oak Harbor to Richard and Jennie (Overway) Nienhuis. Her parents moved to Everett shortly after Eva was born, and later returned to Oak Harbor where she spent her school years.
Eva’s mother died at an early age, leaving Eva to help raise her siblings. Eva quit school at the end of the eighth grade and began work as a waitress at Pat’s Place restaurant in Coupeville. She later went to work at Barney Nienhuis’s grocery store in Oak Harbor.
Eva was married to Corniel “Cornie” Vander Voet in Oak Harbor on June 23, 1939. They recently celebrated 63 years of marriage. Eva and Cornie lived in Oak Harbor for eight years. Eva and Cornie have lived on their farm on Monroe Landing Road for 48 years.
Mrs. Vander Voet was a lifetime member of First Reformed Church of Oak Harbor. She was a member of the church Sunshine Committee, visiting the sick and confined even as her own health was failing. She was also an active member of the church prayer group.
Eva loved flowers, gardening, baking and giving away her famous loganberry pies, cooking, being with family and especially her grandchildren. She was an avid baseball fan, having switched her longtime Los Angeles Dodgers loyalty to the Seattle Mariners.
Mrs. Vander Voet is survived by her husband Cornie at the family home; by four children and their spouses, Donna and Jerry Hoback of Mount Vernon, Les and Jill Vander Voet and Bonnie and John Balster, all of Oak Harbor, and Dale Vander Voet of Lake Stevens. Nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren also survive.
Memorials may be made to the Memorial Fund, First Reformed Church of Oak Harbor. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
