Willey, Marguerite 'Peggy' - Tuesday, 28 Oct 2003
Marguerite L. “Peggy” Willey, 88, of Oak Harbor died Oct. 28, 2003, after suffering a heart attack.
She was born Aug. 20, 1915, in Cashmere, the daughter of Charles and Edna Reeder. She married Herbert C. Willey in 1936. He preceded her in death in 1985. She was a resident of Oak Harbor since 1929. She is survived by her sister Phoebe Smith, 93, and other family members.
Cremation is being conducted by Bleitz Funeral Home of Seattle. In keeping with her wishes, no memorial or services will be held. In lieu of flowers she requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
Vallance, Glenn - Tuesday, 28 Oct 2003
Glenn Gustin Vallance died Oct. 28, 2003, when a tree fell on his car at South Whidbey State Park during a very severe windstorm. Glenn Vallance was born Aug. 16, 1913, in Patterson, Mo., to Edward Harvey and Margaret Belle (Gustin) Vallance.
Mr. Vallance was raised in Missouri, one of two boys in a family with eight daughters. He learned construction from his father, who was a contractor. Glenn quit school after the eighth grade and left home at the age of 15. He soon began a lifetime of building.
Mr. Vallance joined the Carpenters Union and spent more than 50 years as a member, much of the time serving as superintendent on major projects. He was responsible for a significant portion of the high-rise buildings in the Houston, Texas, area. He spent time at Rice University receiving specialized training in concrete engineering. Glenn’s building skills also took him to San Francisco, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Saudi Arabia and Greenland. He spent more than 20 years, building in the Houston area. He also trained and worked as an underwater demolition diver.
Mr. Vallance retired and in 1998, moved to Oak Harbor. He enjoyed hiking, camping, travel, western novels and Patsy Cline music. Four years ago, he became a camp host, working at Wenatchee, Deception Pass, Cornet Bay, Larrabee, Rasar, Rockport and South Whidbey state parks. Most of his time was dedicated to South Whidbey State Park, a task he thoroughly enjoyed.
Glenn was a member of Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church, the Lions Club of Morrison, Colo., and F&AM of Houston, Texas.
Mr. Vallance is survived by his beloved former wife Mona Vallance of Mount Vernon; by one daughter and son-in-law, Cathie and John Koetje of Oak Harbor; and by two sons, Glenn Gustin "Mike" Vallance, Jr. and his wife Ann of Arleta, Calif. and Charles Lee "Pat" Vallance of Flint, Texas. One sister Ethel Wagner and five grandchildren, Frederick Vallance, Glenn Gustin Vallance III, Kimberly Vallance, Thomas Glenn Koetje and Sarah Koetje, also survive him.
Memorial services for Mr. Vallance will be held Monday, Nov. 3, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Reformed Church of Oak Harbor with Rev. John Brown officiating. Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow at a later date.

Masten, Donald J. - Monday, 27 Oct 2003
Donald J. “Don” Masten, Jr., 72, of Cle Elum, died Oct. 27, 2003, at Renaissance Care Center in Yakima.
Don was born April 25, 1931, in Bellingham, to Donald Masten, Sr. and Margaret Patterson Masten. He was raised and educated in Bellingham and Seattle. Don served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He then lived on Whidbey Island for more than 27 years, where he was a commander of the South Whidbey Island American Legion and member and EMT for the South Whidbey Island Fire Department. He was also a commissioner of the Kittitas County Water District No. 7.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, growing flowers and vegetables and antique tractors, but his greatest joy was his family and home.
Survivors include his loving wife, Yvonne L. Masten of Cle Elum; three children, Stacy (Don) Gross of Puyallup, and Julie Young and Jim (Jennie) Masten, all of Seattle; step-children, Dean (Vicky) Robinson of Colville, grandchildren, six step-children, Dean (Vicky) Robinson of Colville, Randy (Katy) Robinson of Issaquah and Devin Mumau of Seattle; four grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, one step-great granddaughter; and three sisters, Marlene (Jim) Grimes of Yakima and Linda (Jack) Bailey and Bonnie (Charles) Sanders, all of Wenatchee.
Don was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Chestnut Street Baptist Church, 609 North Chestnut, Ellensburg.

James, Paige Annmarie - Monday, 27 Oct 2003
Memorial services for Paige Annmarie James will be held Saturday, Nov. 1, at 3 p.m., at Oak Harbor First Baptist Church with Rev. Ozell Jackson officiating. Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow at a later date.
Paige James was born Oct. 17, 2003, at the University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle, to Robert Craig Gunter, Jr. and Jamie Marie James. She died at Children’s Hospital, Seattle, on Oct. 27, 2003, at the age of 10 days.
She is survived by her parents, Robert Gunter, Jr. and Jamie James of Oak Harbor; by grandparents, Robert Craig Gunter of Oak Harbor; Bert Williams James of Oak Harbor; Karen Marie Ochsner of South Ogden, Utah; Jeannette Ann Stone of Denver, Colo., and by great-grandparents, Marge and Bill Sullivan of Oak Harbor; Robert Love Gunter of Longview and LaVerne Mane Martin of Oak Harbor.
In lieu of flowers, the parents are requesting stuffed animals and receiving blankets, which they would deliver to Children’s Hospital in Seattle.
This child’s life was short, yet the death left a huge void in all our hearts and lives. Let us remember today and for always the tiny baby who will never see childhood or adulthood, but will remain our tiny baby forever.

Patterson, Lola - Thursday, 23 Oct 2003
Lola B. Patterson, 77, 45-year resident of Oak Harbor, died at Providence General Medical Center in Everett, Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Patterson was born May 10, 1926, in Baker City, Ore., to Adoniram Judson Brannock and Alma E. (Irwin) Brannock. She was raised in Baker City, where she graduated from high school. On Jan. 5, 1950, she married William C. Patterson in Boise, Idaho. After living in Jacksonville, Fla., they moved to Oak Harbor in 1958. Lola was a member of the Good Sam Club and the AARP. She was also an active member of the Oak Harbor Church of the Nazarene.
Lola is survived by her husband William at home; daughter, Sandy Moody and husband Alex of Anacortes; sons Arnold Morin of Ontario, Ore., Terry L. Patterson and wife Colleen of Stuart, Fla., and Robert L. Patterson and wife Rosemarie of Torrance, Calif.; grandchildren, Beth Patterson of Waterbury, Conn., Shannon, Taylor, and Michael Patterson, all of Stuart, Fla., Billy Patterson of Torrance, Calif., Kristy Hobson and husband Jamal of Redmond, Steven Moody and wife Holly of Cody, Wyoming, Patrick Moody of Anacortes, Jason Morin and wife Heather of Great Bend, Kan.; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Wilson of Baker City, Ore.; also, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, by three brothers, Jerald, Arnold and Jack Brannock, and sisters Fern Connors and Bonnie DeMasters.
Visitation will be Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at Burley Funeral Chapel, from noon until 5 p.m. and Monday Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. until service time. Patrick, Gary - Thursday, 23 Oct 2003
Gary Ellsworth Patrick passed away peacefully at his Maple Valley home on Oct. 23, 2003, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 8 1932, in Bellingham to Elsworth and Wilma Patrick, the second of nine children.
Gary was a talented athlete in football and track until his graduation from Bellingham High School, class of 1950. He enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduation. Gary became a paratrooper and a medic in the 82nd Airborne. After an honorable discharge in 1953, Gary returned to his beloved Bellingham where he began attending Western Washington State College on the GI Bill while also working as a commercial fisherman. He met a cute little waitress at Matt and Millies Cafe named Madeline McFadden and soon they were married on July 9, 1954.
Gary began his career as a sixth grade teacher in Oak Harbor and within two years became a principal. In 1968, Gary moved his family to Renton and took the job as principal at the newly constructed Fairwood Elementary in the Kent School District. In 1972, Gary became an assistant superintendent in Kent and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1986. Gary’s dedication to public education and the Kent School District was unwavering and admirable throughout his career.
Gary’s career in public service continued in his retirement when he was elected as a member of the city council in the fledgling city of Maple Valley 1997. Despite life-threatening illnesses, Gary was a calming and guiding influence in city government and was honored with a proclamation and a field named in his honor with his second retirement in the spring of 2003.
Gary was preceded in death by his father Elsworth Patrick and his sister Dolores Zwicker. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Madeline, who so lovingly cared for him through sickness and health. He was the proud and devoted father to three children; one daughter, Colleen Bleifuss and her husband Rick of Gold Bar. Two sons hail from Enumclaw; Brian Patrick with his wife Lori and Kyle Patrick with his wife Kim. Gary cherished his six grandchildren, showering them with love and affection: Natalie and Alyssa Belifuss, Colin and Nicholas Patrick and Kelly and McKenna Patrick.
Gary had the good fortune of a large and loving family. He is also survived by his Mother Wilma Patrick of Bellingham, and siblings Lolita Peterson (Quentin), Wilma Ann Johnson (Delbert), Leland Patrick (Erdyne), Patty Buss (Roger), Linda Grant (Russell), Robert Patrick (Sandy) and Michael Patrick (Pede), as well as numerous nieces and nephews most residing in Bellingham and surrounding Whatcom County. Gary’s persona and guiding friendship will be missed on the golf course, in classrooms, in board rooms, and amongst his family and friends forever.
Funeral Services for Gary Patrick will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 SE 240th, Kent, WA 98032. In lieu of flowers, Gary had requested that donations be made to the Maple Valley Food Bank (425) 432-5442 or a food bank of your choice in his honor.
Faber, Pauline Kingma - Sunday, 19 Oct 2003
Pauline Kingma Faber passed away peacefully Oct.19, 2003, at the age of 94. She was born April 16, 1909, the seventh of nine children born to Ralph and Kathleen DeKoekkoek Kingma in Hillogom, Netherlands. Her family immigrated through Canada, settling in Oak Harbor in 1914.
Pauline married Pete Faber on June 20, 1929. They lived in Oak Harbor until 1943 when their farm was purchased for Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in World War II. The family farmed in Skagit County for several years. They moved to Mount Vernon in 1953, after purchasing Conway Feed.
Pauline was a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed a tidy house, gardening, flowers, family gatherings, visiting with friends and her church activities. She was a lifelong member of the Christian Reformed Church.
Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Faber, her parents, brothers and sisters John Kingma, Audrey Bultman, Jessie Kruick, Gert Van Winkle, Bud Kingma, Joe Kingma and a son, Stanley Faber. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Nel Kingma and her children Don Faber, daughter-in-law Grace Faber, Les and Joy Faber, Kyse and Dr. Jack Kamps, Charles and Anita Faber, John and Cindy Faber. Their families include 22 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the loving and faithful staff at Mountain Glen and Mira Vista for their attention to Pauline as she lived among them.

Schafroth, Norma Eileen - Sunday, 19 Oct 2003
Norma Eileen Schafroth, 73, died Oct.19, 2003, at Home Place Special Care Center, Oak Harbor. She was born Aug. 28, 1930, in Hackensack, N. J., to Henry S. and Mae Cynthia (Springsted) Wehrmaker. She was the youngest of four children and was raised in Bogota, N.J. Norma met Ernest P. Schafroth while they both worked at Home Health Insurance Company in New York City.
The Schafroths were married in Brooklyn, N.Y., Oct. 11, 1952. Ernie and Norma celebrated 51 years of marriage one week before her death. She and Ernie moved to Arlington, Va., soon after their marriage. Mrs. Schafroth worked for United Mine Workers, serving as an accountant for five hospitals. She then began work with the World Bank, becoming one of their first computer analysts. While in Virginia, she attended night school, received her bachelor’ss of science degree, graduated cum laud with a gold honor medal.
Norma worked for Electronic Data Services and the European Division of General Motors as a computer analyst. She and Ernie moved to Switzerland in 1980. Norma retired in 1992.
In 1997, Norma began suffering from the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease. They moved to Oak Harbor to be near family. Ernie cared for her in Summerhill, until it became necessary to place her in Home Place Special Care Center.
Norma enjoyed traveling, reading, writing letters and poetry, stories, making great photo albums and singing in the church choir and ocean cruises. In her earlier years, she enjoyed roller skating, skiing, serving as a camp counselor and being with family and friends.
Norma is survived by her husband Ernie Schafroth of Oak Harbor, by one niece Fran Ford and husband Tom of Oak Harbor, by two sisters, Patricia Heyzer of Waldwick, N.J., and Doris Morse of Downington, Pa., and one brother George Wehrmaker of New Jersey.
Memorial services for Norma Schafroth will be held at Summer Hill Retirement Center Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at 2 p.m. Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
Taylor, Pansy - Saturday, 18 Oct 2003
Pansy M. Taylor, 95, died at Careage of Whidbey on Oct. 13, 2003. She was born in Buffalo, Kan., to Laska and Amanda Frances (Stroud) Nichols on March 3, 1908. Pansy and her family moved to Montana, near Missoula, when she was 8 years old. In 1922 her family moved to Lynden. Pansy graduated from Lynden High School in 1926 and went on to attend Business College in Bellingham. In 1927 she began working at Peoples State Bank in Lynden. Pansy worked there until 1934 when she went to work with the Washington Co-op. On August 22, 1936, she married Leroy H. "Jud" Taylor, a Lynden High School classmate. In 1942 they moved to Oak Harbor. Pansy went to work for Bill Wanamaker and Shell Oil Company. She decided to retire and spend more time at home, but Mr. Ray Maylor, mayor of Oak Harbor, asked Pansy to help at the city’s library. Thirteen years later, in 1972, Pansy retired from the Oak Harbor City Library. In 1978 Pansy received the "Outstanding Citizen of the Year" award from the city of Oak Harbor. Pansy had been a member of the Methodist Church since 1922 and in 1942 she joined the Oak Harbor Methodist Church. She was a member of the Rebekah’s Lodge since 1957 and the Garden Club for more than 40 years.
Her husband, "Jud", brother, Lt. Col. William C. Nichols and three sisters, Irene Nichols Julius, Anna Nichols and Marie Nichols preceded Pansy in death. Anna and Marie died in early childhood. She is survived by her three sons, Dr. Ross Taylor of Kirkland, Dr. Jack Taylor of Timonium, Md., and Larry Taylor of Burien; four grandsons and one granddaughter.
Graveside services were held Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at Maple Leaf Cemetery beginning at 1 p.m. with the Rebekah Lodge and Pastor Larry Rector jointly officiating. The celebration of Pansy’s life followed at First United Methodist Church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
Kester, Charles Eugene - Thursday, 16 Oct 2003
Charles Eugene Kester, 39, died Oct. 16, 2003, at his home in Oak Harbor, Washington. He was born Jan. 8, 1964, in Atsugi, Japan, to Robert and Kayoko (Myuchi) Kester.
Charles and his family moved to Poway, Calif., when he was two years of age. In 1971, the Kester family moved to Oak Harbor. Charles graduated from Oak Harbor High School in 1983. He worked for Washington Bulb Company and Northwest Seafood for a time, but became disabled and could no longer work.
Charles is survived by his mother Kayoko Kester and one brother Patrick Kester and his wife Janis, all of Oak Harbor.
Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor, Washington.
