Michael "Ben" Boggs
Michael "Ben" Boggs, 74, of Ojai, died Friday, May 18, 2001. He was born March 12, 1927, in Jacksonville, Ill., and had lived in Ojai for 42 years.
A teacher for 27 years, he taught elementary school in Santa Paula, 25 of those years at Barbara Webster School, where he was instrumental in developing the English as a Second Language program. He was a graduate of Loyola University and earned his master's degree at Azusa Pacific University. He taught in the summer camp program at Ojai Valley School for many years. He retired from teaching in 1984.
A World War II veteran, Mr. Boggs was discharged from the U.S. Army Dec. 27, 1946. He was a member of the American Federation of Teachers, Knights of Columbus, Ojai Valley Retired Professional and Businessmen's Club, Ojai Valley Tennis Club and the Ojai Valley Mexican Fiesta.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Rose Chavez Boggs; daughter and son-in-law Monica and John Casey; son and daughter-in-law Dr. Michael Boggs Jr. and Andrea; daughter Mary; son Daniel; and eight grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, May 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ojai.
Floral tributes may be sent to his home or a donation may be made in his memory to Oak Tree House, 111 W. Santa Ana St., Ojai, CA 93023.

Robert Paul Jones
Robert "Bob" Paul Jones, 82, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at his home in Oak View. He was born May 29, 1918, in Carroll County, Mo., and had lived in the Ojai Valley for 33 years, coming from Redondo Beach, Calif.
Mr. Jones was the manager of the Lake Casitas Mobile Home Park in Oak View.
As a veteran of World War II, he participated in building Alaskan highways with the 18th Corps of Engineers. He worked with the Los Angeles County Department of Weights and Measures for 20 years.
Mr. Jones was a member of the Lions Club and a life member of the National Rifle Association. His interests included hunting, fishing and sports. He participated in getting the Oak View Community Center built, served as honorary mayor of Oak View and was named an Outstanding Citizen of Oak View.
He is survived by his daughter Amy Paulette Nickerl of Bakersfield; grandson Victor Nickerl and his wife Shannon of Oak View; three great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins.
Services will be held today at noon at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai. Interment
will be held Thursday, May 24, at noon at Inglewood Park Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ventura County Sheriff's K-9 Unit for the purchase of bulletproof vests.

Hope Frances Snyder
Hope Frances Snyder, 88, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, in Ventura. She had lived in Ojai for 21 years and previously lived in Santa Barbara. She was originally from Somerville, Mass.
Mrs. Snyder was a homemaker and a member of the Ojai Valley Woman's Club and the Ventura Bridge Club.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Jean P. and C. Fred Moulton; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 29, at 2 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.
Memorial donations may be made to Little House of Ojai in lieu of flowers.

John K. Misbeek
John K. Misbeek, 72, longtime Ventura resident, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at home.
Mr. Misbeek was retired following 40 years of service as production superintendent with Continental Oil Company, working both in Ventura and the Rocky Mountain region. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Ventura. His interests included the outdoors and fishing.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Juanita Misbeek of Ventura; sisters and brothers-in-law Cookie and Darrell Lawhon of Ojai, Nancy Misbeek and Dennis Carmichael of Ojai, and Penny and Bill Vaughn of Ventura; sister Linda Wolfe of Ojai; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Richard and Roberta Baron of Citrus Heights; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother Robert J. Misbeek.
Rosary will be recited Monday, May 28, at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Ventura. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, May 29, at 11 a.m., also at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow at Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Sacred Heart Church Building Fund, 10800 Henderson Road, Ventura, CA 93004, or to Livingston Memorial Hospice, 1996 Eastman Ave., Suite 101, Ventura, CA 93003.

Antonia Voogd
Antonia Voogd, 94, a longtime resident and community leader of Ojai, died Saturday, May 12, 2001 at the Solheim Lutheran Home in Eagle Rock, Calif.
Born in The Netherlands in 1906, she came to the United States with her husband Maarten and children in 1936. When her husband retired from Shell Chemical Company, they moved to Ojai in 1958 and became involved with the community. Mrs. Voogd remained in the Ojai Valley until 1995.
While her husband served on the Planning Commission, the Ojai City Council, and presided over the Ojai Music Festival, Mrs. Voogd worked actively on the Women's Committee of the Ojai Music Festival, the Ojai Valley Garden Club and supported the Ojai Valley Museum and Help of Ojai. She was a mainstay of the Women's Golf Group at the Ojai Valley Inn and she and her husband were members of the dance group at the inn.
Mrs. Voogd is survived by two sons, Jacob and Anthonie; daughter Frederika Burrows; six grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Ojai Valley Garden Club, Help of Ojai, or the Ojai Music Festival.
Peggy Lotts
Peggy Lotts, 75, of Ojai, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura after a brief battle with cancer. She was born April 24, 1926, in McClelland, Ark., and had lived in Ojai since 1955, coming from Wasco, Calif.
Mrs. Lotts had been a homemaker and a waitress at the Ojai Valley Inn. She was a member and deacon of the Ojai Presbyterian Church, an active volunteer for the Rotary Club of Ojai-West, and she was an avid bridge player.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Bill Lotts of Ojai; son Mark W. Lotts of Bakersfield; sons and daughters-in-law Michael J. and Margie Lotts, and Matt D. and Carol Lotts, all of Ojai; stepsons Scott Lotts and wife Maggie, and Randy Lotts, all of Reno, Nev.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 2, at 2 p.m. at the Ojai Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Leon Thompson officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ojai Presbyterian Church Building Fund.

Marian Elizabeth Kinzie
Marian Elizabeth Kinzie, 82, of Redlands, Calif., died Friday, May 4, 2001. She was born Oct. 13, 1918 in Folsom, S.D., to Owen and Alice Crawley.
She graduated from Banning High School in 1935 and then attended University of Redlands, Riverside City College, and graduated from San Jose State College with a degree in library science. She married Lester L. Kinzie in 1942.
Mrs. Kinzie worked as a school librarian and shared pastoring churches with her husband in Indiana and California - Arlington, Richmond, Ojai, Culver City and Banning. They were with the First Baptist Church of Ojai from 1960 through 1967.
She is survived by daughters Kathie Kinzie of Northern California, and Margaret Kinzie of Redlands; daughters and sons-in-law Barbara and Bill Pond of Glendale, Ariz., and Janet and Gene Hawver of Redlands; and seven grandchildren.
Mrs. Kinzie was preceded in death by her brother George and her husband Lester.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 2, at 10 a.m. at Plymouth Village, 900 Salem Drive in Redlands.

Alexander Clark Scott
Alexander Clark Scott, 80, of Ojai, died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at his home. He was born Aug. 30, 1920 in Dundee, Scotland. He moved to the United States at age 5 and grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mr. Scott graduated from Cooper Union Engineering College in New York City and worked as an electrical engineer for Aeroflex Labs Corporation where he was vice president. He married his wife Muriel Scott in 1948 in Elmhurst, N.Y.
After retirement he and his wife lived in Florida, and then moved to Ojai in 1987 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. He attended the Wesleyan Church in Ojai.
Mr. Scott is survived by his wife of 52-1/2 years, Muriel Scott of Ojai; son and daughter-in-law John and Dee Scott of Marina Del Rey, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law Carol and William Henley of San Jose, Calif.; sister Dorothy Duncan of Fort Myers, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law Betty and Edward Medla of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at a later time.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Brothers Stetler Mortuary in Santa Paula.
Dexter Clarke MacGuire
Dexter Clarke MacGuire, 96, of Ojai, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Royal Gardens in Meiners Oaks following a lengthy illness. He was born Sept. 16, 1904 in Boston, Mass., and had lived in Ojai for 10 years, coming from Monrovia, Calif.
Mr. MacGuire was president of the Management Conference of the Los Angeles Times Mirror.
He is survived by his daughter Irene de Chateaubriand of Ojai.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, June 4, at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ojai, with Father Patrick Keane, O.S.A., officiating. Rosary will be recited Sunday, June 3, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas. Interment
service will be held Tuesday, June 5, at noon at Rose Hills Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church Building Fund.

James M. Peck Jr.
James "Jim" M. Peck Jr., 74, of Parkersburg, W.V., died Thursday, May 31, 2001 at Ojai Valley Community Hospital's Skilled Nursing Center after a long illness. He was born Sept. 13, 1926 in Parkersburg, to the late James Sr. and Harriet Lee Peck.
He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1947 and received his bachelor of science degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1950. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.
For 30 years, Mr. Peck was involved in pharmaceutical sales and received numerous sales awards, retiring from William H. Rorer in 1985. He was active in scouting, the Elks and was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Parkersburg.
Mr. Peck moved to Ojai in September 2000 to spend time with his daughter and granddaughters.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Dave and Joy Peck of Parkersburg; daughter and son-in-law Teri and Brian Cox of Ojai; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dennis and Joyce Crites of Buckhannon, W.V.; two granddaughters; three step-grandchildren; one step-greatgradchild; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Catherine Peck and Anna Lee Harrison, and his wife of 50 years, "Ginny" Peck.
The family wishes to acknowledge the support and care provided by the staff at The Inn of Marietta, Ohio, The Villa of Ojai, and Ojai Valley Community Hospital's Skilled Nursing Facility.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 21, at 7 p.m. at Leavitt's Funeral Home in Parkersburg, with the Revs. Stinespring and Stewart officiating. Inurnment will be held Friday, June 22, at 11 a.m. at Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon, with the Rev. Yanero officiating.

Hazel B. Freudenthal
Hazel B. Freudenthal, 86, died Friday, June 1, 2001 at her home in Oak View. She was born Nov. 26, 1914 in Oxford, Mass. She was raised in Massachusetts and married Floyd J. Freudenthal Feb. 23, 1935 at the Greenville Baptist Church in Rochdale, Mass.
Mrs. Freudenthal moved to California with her family in 1952. She worked for Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank for 20 years, retiring in 1973.
She spent her retirement years in Medford and Klamath Falls, Ore. She and her husband Frank moved to Oak View in 1999 to live with her daughter and son-in-law. Her interests included sewing, crocheting and cooking, and she gave a lot of her time to her church, serving as Sunday school teacher and superintendent, as well as a choir member and deacon. She was a member of Rebekah's Lodge for 52 years.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Floyd Freudenthal of Oak View; son and daughter-in-law Floyd and Candy Freudenthal of Medford, Ore.; daughters and sons-in-law Marilyn and Robert Chase of Newhall, Calif., Mary and J.C. McCubbins of Sunrise Beach, Mo., and Joyce and Donald Overbaugh of Oak View; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Freudenthal was preceded in death by her daughter Judith Cook of Boise, Idaho.
The family would like to thank Dr. Sims, Dr. Menz, the staffs of Hospice and Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association, Pastor Steve Steel of San Jose, and Pastor Leon Thompson of Ojai Presbyterian Church.

Isabelle Cardona Mangan
Isabelle Cardona Mangan, 87, of Ojai, died Monday, May 28, 2001. She was a longtime resident of Creek Road.
Mrs. Mangan had been co-owner of Cardona Plumbing in Ventura, and was a member of the Emblem Club and the Business and Professional Women's Club.
She is survived by her daughters Rosa Montes and Ramona Hambor, six brothers and sisters, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

John W. Garst
John W. Garst, 88, of Ojai, died Friday, June 1, 2001 in Ventura. He was born Sept. 21, 1912 in Sacramento, Ken., and moved to Ventura County in 1933. He had been an Ojai resident since 1944.
Mr. Garst was the owner of Garst Wire Line Service in Ventura. He was a member of the American Petroleum Institute and his interests included woodworking, gardening and cooking.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Del C. and Sharon Garst of Island Park, Idaho; daughter and son-in-law Linda Garst-Hancock and Jerry Hancock of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Sylvia E. Garst.
No services are planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society.

Florence E. Ballenger
Florence E. Ballenger, 90, a longtime resident of the Ojai Valley, died Friday, June 1, 2001 in Lancaster, Calif. She was born Jan. 27, 1911 in Minneapolis, Minn. to Ben and Ada Thompson.
The family moved to California in 1920, and she attended Los Angeles schools, graduating from Los Angeles High School in 1929 with honors in business. She worked for Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company and Glendale High School. She was married to Wilbur "Bill" Osgood Ballenger in 1930.
The Ballengers lived in the Los Angeles area where their three children were born. In 1952 they moved to Santa Barbara to work as cooks at Westmont College, and in 1959 they moved to Ojai, where Bill became chef at The Thacher School and Florence returned to secretCourier work at Ojai Valley School. They were active in Ojai Valley Community Church and were influential in forming the Missions Committee of the church.
Following her husband's death in 1989, Mrs. Ballenger continued to live at Whispering Oaks in Ojai until her health made it necessary for her to move out and live with her daughter in Mojave.
Mrs. Ballenger is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Lee and Marj Ballenger of Rosamond, Calif., and Larry and Judy Ballenger of Ukiah, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law Lorraine and Ray Rodarte of Mojave, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Ojai Valley Community Church. In lieu of flowers, the family invites any memorial remembrances to be made to the Ojai Valley Community Church Missions Ministry.
