Lucy M. Marine
Lucy M. Marine, 91, of Oak View, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998.
She was born April 28, 1907, in Cicero, Ind.
Mrs. Marine graduated from high school in Cicero and attended business college in Indianapolis. She met her late husband of 50 years, Clarence N. Marine, in Indiana and they were married May 26, 1944, in West Hollywood. They resided for many years in La Crescenta and La Caņada before retiring to Oak View in 1968.
Mrs. Marine was a homemaker and also an accountant for Dr. John McLaughlin in Glendale.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Judith M. and Rick Vanderhurst; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances in her name may be made to HELP of Ojai, Inc. for Oak Tree House.
Arrangements were under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.
Kali Manley
Kali Manley died tragically, but the date of her death remains undisclosed.
She was born Dec. 29, 1983 at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, and was a resident of this valley for her entire life.
Kali attended Arnaz Elementary School and De Anza Middle School. She was currently attending Nordhoff High School where she excelled at art and learned to love Maya Angelou.
Kali participated in swim team and junior life guards. She loved drawing, painting and romantic movies.
She is survived by her parents Holly and Chuck Manley; sisters Chelsea and Liza Manley; and grandparents Bill and Aileen Fraser, Jackie and John Durschinger, and James and Janis Manley.
Services were held on her birthday, Tuesday, Dec. 29, at Ojai Valley Community Church. Pastor Paul Bergmann delivered a message of love, not anger or hate, at this time. It is a message with which the family fully agrees, according to her father. Later, at Nordhoff High School, another ceremony that encouraged the youth of Ojai to share memories was held to the music that Kali enjoyed.
Kali's ashes will be scattered across her favorite places in the mountains and streams of Ojai that she loved, her father said. The family, while devastated by this tragedy has found comfort in the support of this community.
Donations can be made to a trust set up at the Ojai Valley Bank.
Betty Jane Cones
Betty Jane Cones, 81, of Ojai, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital Skilled Nursing Center.
She was born Feb. 17, 1917, in Kansas, and lived in Ventura County 28 years, 18 years as a resident of Ojai, coming from Goleta.
Mrs. Cones was a telephone operator and homemaker.
She is survived by her husband Ben Cones of Ojai; daughters Cathleen Wells of Simi Valley and Frances Eileen Valadez of San Jose, Calif.; sister Frances Ellis of Bella Vista, Ark.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, at Ojai United Methodist Church, with Rev. Robert Underwood officiating.
Interment
services followed at 1 p.m. at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills Memorial Park in Los Angeles.
Arrangements were under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.
Georgia King Maynard
Georgia King Maynard, 97, of Ojai, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at the Skilled Nursing Center of the Ojai Valley Community Hospital after a long illness.
She was born July 4, 1901, in Adams County, Iowa, the fifth of nine children born to Ada and Charles Wesley King.
She and her family came to San Pedro, Calif. in the early 1920s where she met her husband-to-be, Allan Wells Maynard. They lived briefly in Bellflower, Calif., before moving to Pasadena, Calif. in 1939 where she worked at Consolidated Electrodynamics Corporation (Bell & Howell) as the lead person in the precision coil and resistor winding group.
Mrs. Maynard was active in her church in Pasadena, St. James Methodist, and for many years co-sponsored with her husband the Junior High Methodist Youth Fellowship. She was an avid gardener and provided flowers to her organizations.
Mrs. Maynard has lived in Ojai since 1985, moving here to be near her son and sister.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Henry and Janet Maynard of Ojai; daughter-in-law Gloria Maynard of Orange, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law Jennie and Chuck Cetak of Olympia, Wash.; sister Mary Orm of Ventura; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Maynard was predeceased by her husband of 56 years Allan Wells Maynard and her son Allan Maynard Jr., both of whom died in 1979.
A memorial service will be held at the Pierce Brothers Griffin Mortuary, 1075 E. Daily Drive in Camarillo, Sunday, Jan. 10, at 3 p.m.
The family requests that donations be made to Mrs. Maynard's favorite charity, The National Kidney Foundation.
Cremation will be held through the Channel Cities Memorial Society with private inurnment at Green Hills Cemetery in San Pedro.
Denise Helen Haworth
Denise Helen Haworth, 47, of Ojai, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was born Feb. 14, 1951, in Wyandotte, Mich., and lived in Ojai four years, coming from Laguna Hills, Calif.
Miss Haworth was a manager with Wallich's Music City.
She is survived by her father John W. Haworth of Hemet, Calif.; and mother DeLores Haworth and brother and sister-in-law John and Tina Haworth, all of Oak View.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 9, at 1 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.
Cremation will be followed by scattering in the hills of Ojai.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sierra Club.

Everett Dale Selleck
Everett Dale Selleck, 79, of Ojai, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999.
He was born Oct. 6, 1919, in Broadwater, Neb. For much of his boyhood, his family owned and worked a cattle ranch in the sand hills of western Nebraska. He attended Colorado State University at Fort Collins, earning a degree in mechanical engineering in 1943.
During World War II, the manpower shortage meant that he spent the first years of the war operating the family ranch, sometimes singlehandedly. When ranch managers were finally located, Mr. Selleck entered the Army and served in the Philippines and in Japan after the war.
In 1948, he married Louise McPherson of Neligh, Neb. Over the course of 38 years with Shell Oil Company, they made 10 relocations, from California to New York, New Jersey, Texas and Louisiana, before retiring and returning to Ojai, where they had lived during the first year of their marriage
During retirement, they enjoyed avocado farming, world travel and classical music.
Following the death of his wife in 1994, Mr. Selleck embraced volunteer work for HELP of Ojai.
He is survived by his brother Dean Selleck; daughters Hilah Anne and Sarah Elizabeth; sons-in-law Bruce Miller and Brent Nyquist; and three grandchildren.
Private memorial services are planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any local library or HELP of Ojai.

Anne Elizabeth Ravera
Anne Elizabeth Ravera, 60, of Ojai, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at her home.
She was born April 28, 1929, in Inglewood, Calif., and had been an Ojai Valley resident for 45 years, coming from Santa Barbara.
Mrs. Ravera was the owner/operator of Maxie's Cocktail Lounge in Oak View.
She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and a member of the Optimist Club.
Mrs. Ravera is survived by her sons Richard J. Ravera of Tulsa, Okla., Mark J. Ravera and Joseph M. Ravera, both of Bend, Ore.; daughters Eileen Ravera Guidotti of Newport Beach, Calif. and Joanne R. Bievere of Ojai; brother Dr. James Mckenna of Agoura, Calif; sister Margaret Martin of Folsom, Calif; and 10 grandchildren.
A viewing was held at Clausen Funeral Home Monday, Jan. 11, from noon to 8 p.m., with a rosary being recited at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was held Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ojai, with burial following at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
Memorials may be made to Hospice or The Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Charles Shelton
Charles Shelton, 77, of Ojai, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at his home after a long illness.
He was born Feb. 6, 1921, in Beaumont, Texas, and lived in Ojai for 48 years. He was a 54-year county resident.
Mr. Shelton had been an oil field worker.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Louise Shelton of Ojai; daughter Nickie Martin of Peoria, Ariz.; son John Shelton of Ojai; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
No services will be held.

Geoffrey T. Wright
Geoffrey T. Wright, 86, of Ojai, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at his home after a long illness.
He was born in London, England, on March 30, 1912, to Thomas and Linda Wright, and moved out of the London area with his mother to a safer location during World War I in 1917. He grew up and lived in the county of Middlesex until age 51. He served in the British Army from 1943 to 1946 during World War II.
He decided to emigrate with his family to the United States in 1963, in order to live in a warmer climate for health reasons, and eventually settled in Ojai in 1964.
Mr. Wright was the district area representative for the Ojai Valley for John Hancock Life Insurance Company and retired from that company in 1977. He had previously worked on instruments designed for the Apollo Space Program.
He was a golfer for more than 60 years and served as secretary and president of the Soule Park Men's Club where he was a member until the time of his death.
Mr. Wright enjoyed writing poetry and completed a book of poems in 1987.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Audrey Wright of Ojai; twin daughters Rosalind Wackford of Ojai and daughter and son-in-law Teresa and Jeffery Ball of Ventura; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three nephews.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai, with Rev. Robert Underwood officiating.
Donations may be made to Little House and HELP of Ojai.

Clare Orr Bell
Clare "Jack" Orr Bell, 80, of Shafter, Calif., died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, in Bakersfield.
He was born Aug. 5, 1918, in Elgin, N.D. to James and Marie (Downard) Bell. He was raised in Spear Fish, N.D. and attended area schools there until entering the Air Force in 1941. He served in the Air Force from 1941 to 1946, and then served again from 1948 to 1949. After his discharge he moved to Ojai, where he lived until 1995 when he moved to Bakersfield. He had resided in Shafter since 1997.
Mr. Bell was married to Madeline Hedge Oct. 9, 1944, in Nashville, Tenn. He worked delivering milk for the Royal Oaks Dairy from 1949 to 1961. From 1961 to 1973, he owned and operated a Shell and Gulf service station in Meiners Oaks, from which he retired in 1973.
He enjoyed working on cars and donating his time and efforts to the Ojai Humane Society.
Mr. Bell is survived by his wife of 54 years, Madeline Bell of Shafter; two sons; two daughters; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be held today at Peters Funeral Home in Shafter, with Pastor Jim Williams of the First Southern Baptist Church of Shafter officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Bell's name to the new Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic, 402 Bryant St., Ojai, CA 93023.

Ruby Foyil
Ruby Foyil, 84, of Ojai, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at the Victoria Care Center in Ventura.
She was born June 24, 1914, in Maude, Okla., and lived in Ojai since 1938, coming from Springfield, Ore.
Mrs. Foyil was retired, having worked for the Ojai Village Pharmacy. She was a member of the Ojai chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Robert and Homer Nichols of Banning, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law James and Marilyn Carriger of Ventura; stepsons Gene Foyil of Spiro, Okla. and Steve Foyil of Santa Paula; stepdaughters Linda Reyes of Santa Paula and Sheila Carlton of Ojai; sisters Alice Randall of Springfield, Ore., Mildred Barnard of Redding, Calif. and Letha Bacuum of Texas; brother and sister-in-law Arra Ruth Ryker of Springfield, Ore.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Manuel Foyil.
A memorial service will be held Monday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai, with retired Pastor Ruby Mae Savage officiating.
Private inurnment will be at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.
Memorial contributions may be made to Little House of Ojai.

Maria R. Nunez
Maria R. Nunez, 68, of Ojai, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born May 27, 1930, in Westminster, Calif., and lived in Ojai for 12 years. She was a 20-year Ventura County resident, coming from Los Angeles.
Mrs. Nunez had worked 10 years as a nurse's aide at Ventura County Medical Center.
She is survived by her sons Oscar Nunez of Ojai and Roderick Nunez of Ventura; brother Lallo Cruz of Santa Ana, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Henry Nunez in 1987.
No services are planned. Cremation will be followed by scattering at sea off the Ventura County coastline.

Kurt D. Shippy
Kurt D. Shippy, 35, of Ojai, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital.
He was born July 15, 1963, in Covina, Calif., and had lived in Ojai for 32 years.
Mr. Shippy was self-employed as a free-lance Web designer and had owned his own printing businesses in Oak View and Ventura.
He was a 1981 graduate of Nordhoff High Class. He enjoyed fishing, hiking and animals.
He is survived by his father Frank Shippy of Ojai; mother Janyce Shippy of Ojai; brother Scott Shippy of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandmother Jean Shippy of Atlanta, Ga.; two aunts; two uncles; and six cousins.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai, with Pastor Bill Barrett officiating.
