Dr. George D. McDermott
Dr. George D. McDermott, 88, of Thousand Oaks, died Friday, July 9, 1999, at St. Joseph's Health and Retirement Center in Ojai after a short illness.
He was born Feb. 22, 1911, in Providence, R.I. He lives in Ojai for seven months and was a 35-year Ventura County resident, coming from West Los Angeles.
Dr. McDermott was a podiatrist. His practice was on Pico Boulevard in West Los Angeles, where he was known as "the podiatrist of the stars."
He was a member of the Third Order of Secular Franciscans and the Serra International Club, and a past member of the Lions Club in Los Angeles.
Dr. McDermott was a parish member of St. Jude's Catholic Church in Westlake Village and a parish usher and eucharistic minister.
He was also a member of the California Podiatry Association and was honored for more than 50 years of service to his profession.
He is survived by his sons Bernie McDermott of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Joe McDermott of Thousand Oaks; sister-in-law Josephine Quinn of Williamsport, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Frances Flood McDermott.
A memorial mass will be celebrated Thursday, July 15, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Chapel in Ojai, with Fr. Carroll Laubacher officiating.

Florence H. Kasten
Florence H. Kasten, 96, of Ojai, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital after a short illness.
She was born June 3, 1903, in Danville, Ill., and lived in Ojai for 25 years, coming from Pasadena, Calif.
Mrs. Kasten had been the office manager for Brown-Jordan Furniture in Pasadena and played canasta and poker.
She is survived by her daughter Joan Carolyn Carmody; brother William Kittle; a nephew; and three step-grandchildren.
Mrs. Kasten was preceded in death by her husband Sylvester Kasten in 1975 and a stepson, Bradley Kasten.
Services were held today at Clausen Funeral Home Chapel in Ojai, followed by interment
at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
Arrangements were under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.
Raymond W. Davis
Raymond W. Davis, 90, of Oak View, died Friday, July 9, 1999, after a short illness.
He was born Jan. 28, 1909, in Pittsfield, Mass. and lived in Oak View for three months, coming from Camarillo.
Mr. Davis was a merchant and innkeeper. He had been in Ventura County for two years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in West Los Angeles.
He is survived by his daughter Kathleen Munz of Camarillo; brother Bob Davis of Costa Mesa; and three grandchildren.
Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Davis in 1989.
Services will be held Monday, July 19, at 11 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica, Calif.

Clara A. Quinlen
Clara A. Quinlen, 94, of Ojai, died Monday, July 12, 1999, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital's Skilled Nursing Center after a brief illness.
She was born Jan. 17, 1905, in Minnesota, and lived in Ojai for 20 years, coming from San Bruno, Calif.
Mrs. Quinlen, a former payroll clark, was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Ojai.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 21, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church with Pastor Jan Nairn officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the City of Hope, Los Angeles, or the American Heart Association, Ojai Affiliate.

Leon "Ken" Duryea
Leon "Ken" Duryea, 68, of Ojai, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, in a Ventura hospital following a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 3, 1930, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and had been a 45-year Ventura County resident.
Following his service in the United States Navy, he continued in civil service as an air weapons electronic specialist at the Naval Air Station, Point Mugu. At his retirement, he was honored for his dedication, excellence and 37 years of combined service to the Navy.
Mr. Duryea was a golfer and a member of the Soule Park Senior Men's Club and the San Buenaventura Men's Golf Club.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Judy Duryea; son Kenneth Duryea of San Antonio, Texas; daughters Susan Garcia, of San Antonio, Texas, Debra Davidsen, of Seguin, Texas, and Kimberly Duryea, of Ventura; and four grandchildren.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
Patricia F. Smith
Patricia F. Smith, 76, of Ojai, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, in Santa Barbara.
She was born in Australia in 1923, the seventh of eight children of David Wilfred and Laura May Williams, and was employed in accounting in a Sydney department store during World War II, when she met and married William Solol Smith, an American naval serviceman. Their oldest son was born in Sydney.
Mrs. Smith and her son crossed the Pacific during the height of the war to come to America in one of the first "war bride" transports.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith lived in various Southern California cities, as well as in Arizona, adding another son and daughter to the family, before settling permanently in Ojai in 1954.
She returned to the workplace in 1961 and retired from the Ventura County Elections Division in 1978.
The Smiths were married 51 years before Bill's death in 1994.
She is survived by two brothers Gordon and Ken, of Australia; sons and daughters-in-law David and Theodora, of New Zealand, and Ken and Peg, of Goleta; daughter Carol Gordon and her partner Dennis Morris of Camarillo; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held today at 10 a.m. at Santa Paula Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity.

Margaret Gehres
Margaret Gehres, 86, of Ojai, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 11, 1913, in Los Angeles, and had lived in Ojai for 10 years, coming from Huntington Park, Calif.
Mrs. Gehres was a homemaker.
She is survived by her sons Stuart C. Gehres of Ojai, and Robert "Bob" Gehres of Saugus, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Stuart F. Gehres, in 1990.
A graveside service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Los Angeles Fire Department Relief Association.

Sophie Strzelecki
Sophie Strzelecki, 74, of Oak View, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura.
She was born Sept. 21, 1925, in Poland, and had lived in Oak View for 10 years, coming from Poland.
Mrs. Strzelecki had a 30-year career as an architect.
She is survived by her daughter Eva Strzelecki of Plymouth, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband Constant Strzelecki in May of 1997.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated yesterday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, with Father Tom officiating. Interment
followed at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.

Harriett J. Waian
Harriett J. Waian, 90, of Ojai, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, in Vista, Calif.
She was born May 23, 1909, in Denver, Colo., and had lived in Ojai for 32 years, coming from Inglewood, Calif.
Mrs. Waian was a longtime member of the Ojai Valley Community Church.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Elaine and Marvin Van Wagner of Ojai; son and daughter-in-law Warren and Pam Waian of Vista, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Henry J. Waian of Ojai.
Graveside services were conducted Dec. 29 by Warren Waian at Inglewood Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ojai Valley Christian School.
Dottie Swann
Dottie Swann, 81, of Ojai, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, of cancer.
She was born Nov. 12, 1919, in Zion, Ill., and had lived in Ojai for 50 years, coming from Athens, Ga.
Mrs. Swann had been a waitress at the Ojai Valley Inn and The Oaks at Ojai.
She is survived by her sons Patrick Swann and Mike Swann, both of Ojai; sisters Helen Ashton of Zion, Ill., and Bettie Cowie of Jackson, Fla.; and four granddaughters.
A memorial service will be held at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai Saturday at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Raymond Martin Bornand
Raymond Martin Bornand, 64, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital. He was born Nov. 7, 1935 in Santa Barbara, Calif., to Irene and Rene Bornand.
After serving as a Marine Corps sergeant in the Korean War, he returned to Santa Barbara and became an electrician for Craviotto Electric Service. He then began his own business, Major Electric Co., which he owned and operated for 25 years.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jeannette Bornand; and daughters Michele, Sheree and Kellie; son Raymond Bornand Jr.; sisters Brenda and Laura; and brothers Bob, Oren, and Clarence.
He was preceded in death by his sister Rita.
A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home Chapel at 757 E. Main St. in Ventura.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Wilson "Cad" Jess Caldwell
Wilson "Cad" Jess Caldwell, 85, of Ojai, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at his home.
He was born Feb. 26, 1914, in Hanford, Calif, went to high school in Exeter, Calif., and attended Fresno State University. He had been a resident of Ventura County for 60 years.
Mr. Caldwell was a manager for Lang Transportation for 18 years and had also been sales superintendent for Union Engineering Company for 19 years. While employed by Lang Transportation, he designed a crane with the largest lifting capacity in the United States.
He was on the board of directors of the Siete Robles Water Company and Siete Robles Recreational Club for more than 20 years, and later served as a consultant. He was also a member of the motor home clubs the Riggers and Rockers.
Mr. Caldwell's volunteer work included the Girl Scouts of America, El Camino Women's Club, HELP of Ojai and Oil Field Barbecues at the O.S.T. Pipeyard.
He is survived by his wife Nadyne Caldwell of Ojai; daughters and sons-in-law Shari and Dale Bischof, and Gayle and James Jeffery; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A celebration of life will be held Feb. 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the family home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to HELP of Ojai or HELP of Ojai Hospice.

Winifred Adele McCullah
Winifred Adele McCullah, 95, of Ojai, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital Skilled Nursing Center.
She was born Aug. 26, 1904, in Salina, Kan., and came to California in 1936. She had lived in Ojai for 15 years, coming from Torrance, Calif.
Mrs. McCullah is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Mike and Joyce McCullah of Ojai; daughter Mariwyn Simmons of Ojai; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Coleman A. McCullah.
Services were held Jan. 5 at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Calif.
Beatrice Rainen West
Beatrice Rainen West, 83, of Oak View, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born April 14, 1916, in Boston, Mass., and had lived in the Ojai Valley for 12 years, coming from Brentwood, Calif.
Mrs. West was the owner-operator, along with her husband William, of Bill West Plumbing, and was also a professional dancer and musician.
She is survived by her brother Frank Rainen of Santa Clarita; sister Edna Warren of Hollywood; and many nieces and nephews.
