Dr. James Charles "Charlie" Brennan
James Charles "Charlie" Brennan, 76, died at his home in Ojai Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, after a long illness.
He was born May 22, 1923, in County Monaghan, Ireland, to Thomas Patrick Brennan and Theresa Agnes O'Neill. He was the eldest of eight children.
Mr. Brennan graduated from University College Dublin Medical School, interned at St. Vincent's Hospital in Dublin, and completed his pathology residency at the University of Toronto and St. John's General Hospital, Newfoundland, Canada.
He was a professor of pathology and director of laboratories at Baylor University in Houston, Texas, Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, Md., and Buffalo General Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y.
Mr. Brennan moved to California in 1971 to join the pathology staff at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. He became director of laboratories at Ventura County Medical Center in 1974. He was also the pathologist and director of laboratories at Ojai Valley Community Hospital from 1974 to 1982. He taught and worked with the resident physicians. Mr. Brennan retired in 1992.
He is survived by his wife Priscilla Brennan of Ojai; former wife Joan; son James; daughters Brenda and Siobhan; sisters Sheila and Sister Mary Assumpta, both of England; brothers Pat and Gerry, both of Ireland; two grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister in Ireland.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Ventura County Medical Center Research Foundation or Catholic Charities.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at our Lady of Assumption Church, officiated by Monsignor Donal Mulcahy, Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Interment
will be in Ireland Feb. 20.
Glen R. Dewar
Glen R. Dewar, 74, of Kalkaska, Mich. died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Mich.
He was born in Harrisville, Mich. on Aug. 19, 1925, the son of Hector and Neva Nevin Dewar. He married Jane Neihardt in Traverse City, Mich. on Aug. 23, 1973.
A resident of Kalkaska since 1971, he had been employed by Fuelgas Company for 30 years prior to his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of the Kalkaska Moose Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Dewar; sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Sue Dewar of Clio, Mich.; Jeff and Diane Dewar of Flint, Mich; Tim and Alysia Dewar of Ojai, and Raymond and Stacy Dewar of San Pedro, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law Gloria and Lawrence Polzin of Montrose, Mich., Gail and Fred Gatica of Henderson, Nev.; daughter Linda Dewar of Okemos, Mich.; stepson and his wife Terry and Kim Neihardt of South Boardman, Mich.; stepdaughter and her husband Janice and Robert Horton of South Boardman, Mich.; brothers and sisters-in-law Jim and Ruth of Alpena, Mich., and Allen and Stella of Mt. Morris, Mich.; sisters and brothers-in-law Lena and Jim Jobin, and Florence and Bob Ford, both of Mt. Morris; 26 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Jan. 17 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Kalkaska.
Irma Irene Annala
Irma Irene Annala, 85, of Ojai, died Jan. 8, 2000, at her home.
She was born Sept. 19, 1914, in Michigan, and had lived in Ojai for six years, coming from El Monte, Calif.
Mrs. Annala was a physical therapy assistant and also worked as a volunteer at Second Helpings Thrift Shop in Ojai.
She is survived by her daughter Gail Kalinoski of Ojai; son David Annala of Santa Ana, Calif.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 1212 Maricopa Highway in Ojai.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Althea Virginia Godfrey
Althea Virginia Godfrey, 84, of Ojai, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at her home after an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 11, 1915, in Palmetto, Fla., and had been a Ventura County resident for 60 years, moving here from Los Angeles.
Mrs. Godfrey owned and operated Althea's Corsets and Orthopedics in Ventura for 43 years, retiring in 1989. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, a member of the Altrusia Club and other business and professional organizations, as well serving on numerous boards and committees for St. Joseph's Health and Retirement Center, where she was also an active volunteer and fund-raiser.
She is survived by her brother Raymond Cloud of Florida; one grandson; one niece; one great-niece; and one great-nephew.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Clarence "Bud" Godfrey, in 1987.
Visitation is being held today beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the Chapel of St. Joseph's Health and Retirement Center in Ojai, followed by a Rosary service at 7:30 p.m.
Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, also at the Chapel of St. Joseph's Health and Retirement Center, followed by interment
at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Joseph's Health and Retirement Center.

L.D. McDowell
L.D. McDowell of Milton, Ill., died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Ill. Born May 24, 1924, in Piggot, Ark., he was the son of Lester and Etta Polston McDowell.
Mr. McDowell graduated from Milton High School in 1942. He served in the Navy during World War 11, and later worked in heavy construction as a carpenter in Ventura, Calif. He was a member of the Milton Christian Church and the Carpenter's Union of Camarillo, Calif.
Survivors include his wife Florence McDowell of Milton; son Lester McDowell of Tampa, Fla.; daughters Debbie Steele of Pittsfield, Ill., and Jane McDowell of Reserve, N.M.; eight grandchildren (one of them being Holly Santino of Ojai) four great-grandchildren (including Austin and Taylor Santino of Ojai); a brother and a sister.
Funeral services were held Dec. 31 at the Milton Christian Church with Brother Jerry Edison, Dr. Harold Willmington and Brother Scott Walker officiating. Burial was at the Green Pond Cemetery near Peal, Ill. Memorials are suggested to the Milton Christian Church or USS McDougal Reunion Fund.
Jacqueline "Jacque" Okun
Jacqueline "Jacque" Okun, 42, of Ojai, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital after a sudden illness.
She was born May 20, 1957, in California and lived in Ojai for 14 years, coming from Newport Beach, Calif.
Mrs. Okun was a homemaker. She had been a high school cheerleader and had coached the cheerleading squad at Nordhoff High School.
She is survived by her husband Nathan F. Okun of Ojai; son Joshua Fisher of Tucson, Ariz.; sisters Loureen Diamond of Alpine, Utah, Margaret Svec of Redding, Calif., and Catherine Hart of Snohomish, Wash.; brothers Eric Johnsen of Ferndale, Wash., and Kirk Johnsen of Everett, Wash.; parents James I. and Marilyn Johnsen of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandmother Ruth Johnsen of Ojai; and many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.
Services were held yesterday at the Church of the Living Christ in Ojai. Inurnment will take place in Southern California.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Nordhoff Booster Club.

Alice Rossow
Alice Rossow, 95, of Ojai, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital after a fall suffered while picking apples in her orchard.
She was born May 17, 1904, in Lanesboro, Iowa, and had lived in Ojai for 23 years, coming from Glendale, Calif.
Mrs. Rossow had been a rural school teacher in Iowa and an interior decorator. She was a member of the Ojai United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of P.E.O.
She is survived by her daughter Betty Hagan of Tigard, Ore.; son and daughter-in-law Merlin E. and Faye Rossow of Santa Barbara; three grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Everett Rossow and her grandson Robert Rossow.
A memorial service was held Monday at 11 a.m. at Ojai United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Underwood officiating. Private inurnment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ojai United Methodist Church or Little House of Ojai.

Lillian D. Eddy
Lillian D. Eddy, 94, of Coral Springs, Fla., died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000.
The widow of Arthur W. Eddy, she and her husband had lived in Ojai for many years.
Adele Watson
Adele Watson, 98, of Ojai, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital.
She was born Jan. 15, 1902, in New York City, N.Y., and was a 15-year resident of Ventura County, coming from Anaheim.
Mrs. Watson was a homemaker and sold her lemon poundcakes to local restaurants for many years.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Florence and Gerald Klein of Ojai; daughter-in-law Muriel Watson of Seattle, Wash.; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband Edward Watson and her son Charles Watson.
A memorial service was held Monday at 1 p.m. in the Loma Vista Chapel of Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura, with Pastor James Lair of the Church of the Living Christ in Ojai officiating.
Private burial will take place at Westminster Memorial Park in Westminster, Calif., at a later date.

Mary Leslie Bogart
Mary Leslie Bogart, 80, of Ojai, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, in Ojai.
She was born Sept. 3, 1919, in Cambridge, Mass., to Henry Prescott Rossiter and Katherine Leslie Rossiter. She had lived in Ojai for 25 years.
Mrs. Bogart attended Haskell School in Cambridge and graduated with honors from Simmons College in Boston. She worked at Harvard University.
Mrs. Bogart was the widow of Robert M. Bogart, who died in Ojai July 6, 1998. They had been married for 52 years. They met during World War II when she assisted with the entertainment at the Officers' Club in Cambridge.
She is survived by her nephew and his wife, Bruce and Nancy Rossiter of La Jolla, Calif.; niece and her husband, Nancy and Bruce Barone of Sudbury, Mass.; brother-in-law William M. Bogart and wife Joyce of Rockledge, Fla.; sister-in-law Helen Bogart Marshall and husband Paul of Deltona, Fla.; and sister-in-law Anne Bogart Porter and husband Carl of Columbus, Ga.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Ojai United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bobbie McMullen officiating.

Roland "Bud" Owen
Roland "Bud" Owen, 68, of Ojai, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at his home. He was born Nov. 8, 1931 in Dennison, Texas.
Mr. Owen was discharged from the Army in 1955 and later became a machine operator. He moved to Ventura in 1976 and to Ojai in 1990.
He is survived by his lifemate Erma Perez of Ojai; daughters Mary Perez, and Sandra and Yvette Aguilar, all of Ojai; children Ronnie, Mark and Terri Owen of Montana; niece and nephew Maya and Omar Barraza; and two grandchildren.
Mr. Owen was preceded in death by his five siblings, including Pat Barraza of Ojai.
A family gathering will be held this weekend at 905 Grandview Ave. in Ojai.

Marguerite M. Colvey
Marguerite M. Colvey, 85, of Ojai, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at her home. She was born April 16, 1914, in Montreal, Canada, and had lived in Ojai for three years.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Donna and Peter Monahan of San Anselmo, Calif., Jane and Bob Dorotik of Escondida, Calif., and Marilyn and Michael Ryan of Ojai; son and daughter-in-law Bob and Linda Colvey of Hutchinson, Kan.; daughter Bonnie Long of Long Beach, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ojai. Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.
Craig Roger DeMoor
Craig Roger DeMoor, 48, of Ojai, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at his home after a long illness.
He was born Oct. 25, 1951, in Lakewood, Ohio. He graduated from John Marshall High School in January of 1970, and then served four years in the U.S. Navy. He went on to form his own company, DeMoor's Custom Painting. He married his wife Jackie in 1974 and they moved to Ojai in 1977.
Mr. DeMoor was an active member of the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.
He is survived by his wife Jackie DeMoor of Ojai; daughters Dana and Carly; grandfather Cornelius DeMoor of Berea, Ohio; father and stepmother Roger and Ruth DeMoor of Ojai; mother Jayne of Rocky River, Ohio; uncle and aunt Stan and Marilyn of Seven Hills, Ohio; brother Doug DeMoor of Ojai; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held today from noon to 8 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.
Services will be held Thursday at Ojai Valley Community Church, with Pastor Paul Bergmann officiating. Interment
will follow at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura. A gathering will immediately follow the graveside service at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.

Mae Eyraud-Smith
Mae Eyraud-Smith, 92, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000 at Brandel Manor in Turlock, Calif. She was born Sept. 13, 1907, in Boliver, Mo. She had been a resident of Stanislaus County for nine years.
Mrs. Eyraud-Smith had lived in Ojai from 1930 to 1991. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son Burl Pike of Bakersfield, Calif.; daughter Kathleen of Hughson, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are being held today at 2 p.m. at Lakewood Funeral Home Chapel in Hughson, Calif. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 4933, Modesto, Calif. 95352.

Marilynn Joyce Forgey
Marilynn Joyce Forgey, 66, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at her home in Ojai. She was born May 12, 1933, in Sacramento, Calif., to Austin L. and Madeleine L. Read. Her family came to Ventura in 1954.
Mrs. Forgey had worked for various local doctors for many years.
She is survived by her husband Robert L. "Bob" Forgey; sons and daughters-in-law Lynn P. and Cindy Mullins, Daniel R. and Sharon Mullins, and Duane P. and Joy Mullins; daughter and son-in-law Donnel J. and Doug Scotland; sister and brother-in-law Sylvia and Dave Stanton; stepmother Gerry Read; sisters-in-law Joanne Myers, Joyce Cantrell, and Carmen Taylor; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jim and Carol Forgey; numerous aunts, nieces and nephews; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Forgey was preceded in death by her parents and sister Patricia.

Esther Hernvall
Esther Hernvall, 87, of Ojai, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Acacias Care Center after a lengthy illness. She was born June 7, 1912, in Royal, Iowa, and had lived in Ojai for 46 years, coming from Wheaton, Minn.
Mrs. Hernvall was a homemaker.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Orville and Elaine Hernvall of Ojai; sisters-in-law Hazel Rasmussen of Ventura, and Christina Hernvall of Wheaton, Minn.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held at a later date.

Guy Lewis
Guy Lewis, 78, of Ojai, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at The Venturan Convalescent Center after a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 2, 1922, in Buckfield, Maine, and had lived in Ojai for 12 years, coming from Whittier, Calif.
Mr. Lewis had been a service supervisor in the oil fields. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree, and a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific theater.
Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jeannette Lewis of Ojai; son and daughter-in-law Gary and Linda Lewis of Ventura; sister Dorothy Sweet of Thousand Oaks; brother Donald Lewis of Greenville, R.I.; and one grandson.
Visitation was held at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai yesterday and rosary was recited. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today at 9 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ojai. Interment
will follow at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.

William "Ken" Swanson
William "Ken" Swanson, 89, of Oak View, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Acacias Care Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born Aug. 2, 1910, in St. Paul, Minn., and had lived in the Ojai Valley for 36 years. He was a 63-year Ventura County resident, coming from Los Angeles.
Mr. Swanson had been a postal clerk. He served on the light cruiser USS Montpelier in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post #339 of Ventura.
He is survived by his wife Pearl Swanson of Carmel, Calif.; stepsons Floyd Percy of Lenexa, Va., and Peter and Michael Percy, both of Ventura; stepdaughters Barbara Simmons and Beverly Allen, both of Carmel, Calif.; brother Arnold Swanson of Minnesota; nephew Dr. Gary Swanson of Camarillo; three stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held today at 10 a.m. at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.

William B. Fristrup
William B. Fristrup, 75, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at his home in Ojai.
He was born March 12, 1924, in Portland, Ore., and lived there until joining the Army Air Corps during World War II. He spent most of his last 40 years traveling the world working for various offshore oil drilling companies.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Pam Fristrup of Ojai; son and daughter-in-law Carey and Sandra Fristrup of El Centro, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law Nancy and Jim Isaac of Ventura, Jenny Fristrup and Steve Benelisha of Oak View, and Roberta and Robert Henson of Camarillo; sister Ardice Ward of Portland, Ore.; brother Herbert Dalberg of Washington; and 14 grandchildren.
Visitation was held yesterday at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai and rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.
Graveside services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.

Nick Chermak
Nick Chermak, 76, of Ojai, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura.
He was born Oct. 20, 1923, in Wisconsin, and had lived in Ojai for 18 years, coming from St. Paul, Minn.
Mr. Chermak had been a shipping and receiving clerk for Webb Company Publishing in St. Paul. He was a member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his daughter Cathy Gave and son LeRoy Chermak, both of St. Paul; sisters Teresa, Kate and Julie and brother Mike Chermak, all of St. Paul; brother Edward Chermak of Duluth, Minn.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Chermak was preceded in death by his wife Myrtle in 1994.
Visitation will be held today from 9 to 11 a.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai. Graveside services will follow at 1 p.m. at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.

Andrew James "Jim" Mann
Andrew James "Jim" Mann, 69, a longtime resident of Maricopa, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, in a Bakersfield hospital. He was born May 25, 1930, in Phoenix, Ariz.
Mr. Mann worked for O.M.A. Ojai Ranch for 32 years. He was a member of the Pro National Rodeo and Hot Rod associations.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Andy and Jolene Mann of Colorado, Ronnie and Lonnie Mann of Kentucky, and Kenny and Cindy Mann of Derby Acres; daughter and son-in-law Marion and Clyde Dunn of Maricopa; brother Edward Mann of Bullhead City, Ariz.; sister Idella Dewberry of Ardmore, Okla.; and 14 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Mann in 1997.
There are no visitation hours scheduled. Graveside funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. in the West Side District Cemetery in Taft.
