John Adams
John Adams, a longtime resident of the Ojai Valley, died Nov. 2, 2000 of a heart attack, near his home in Escalon, Calif. He was born Dec. 9, 1943, in Knoxville, Tenn.
He moved to the Ojai Valley with his wife and daughter in 1976. They lived, worked and raised their daughter in Ojai for 20 years. They moved to Escalon in 1996.
Mr. Adams is survived by his wife, Esther of Escalon; and his daughter Sophie, son-in-law Johnny and grandson Justin, who live in Oakdale, and are expecting their second child later this month.
Larry Anderson
Larry Anderson, 49, of Oroville, Calif., died recently at his home. He was born Feb. 5, 1951 in Ventura.
He attended Nordhoff High School in Ojai. After graduation, he served with the Army from 1970 to 1973 and was a member of the Army Drill Team.
Mr. Anderson started work with the Forest Service in 1974 in Los Padres National Forest. He worked on the original Rose Valley Helishots and excelled as a lead firefighter and sawyer. He also worked at Temescal and Piru fire stations.
In 1978, he was reassigned to the Plumas National Forest and worked at Bucks Lake, Brush Creek and Challenge. In 1979, he was assigned to the Redding Hotshots and received extensive training in wildland firefighting tactics and leadership techniques.
Mr. Anderson's last position was in fire prevention. He routinely patrolled the La Porte and Hartman Bar areas and flew as an aerial observer during lightning storm.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather Barbara and Jack Smith of Ojai; his father Walter Anderson of Ventura; sisters Barbara Anderson and Judi Smith; and brothers Wally Anderson and Robb Smith.
A memorial service was held Oct. 28 at Bedrock Park, Calif.
Hannah Mae Thomas
Hannah Mae Thomas, 99, of Ojai, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000 after an extended illness.
She was born Aug. 21, 1901 in Rocky Ford, Colo., and had been a Ventura County resident for 62 years, coming from Oklahoma.
Mrs. Thomas was a kitchen worker at the Oak View Grammar School from 1955 to 1961, and worked as a cook at the Oak View Chicken Platter from 1957 to 1960. From 1955 to 1957, she worked as a volunteer at the Foster Memorial Hospital, now known as Community Memorial Hospital.
She won first, second and third place ribbons at the Ventura County Fair, and was honored as the 10,000th rider on the Ojai Trolley at age 88.
She is survived by her sons George Thomas of Ojai, and Robert Thomas of Walker, Calif.; daughters Val Yarbrough of Ojai, Ruby Strait of Parker, Ariz., and Bonnie Cary of Simi Valley; sister Nina Bumgartner of Nowata, Okla.; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the Joseph Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura, with Pastor Scott Harrell officiating. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 7 p.m.

Ernest "Buzz" M. Warren
Ernest "Buzz" M. Warren, 84, of Oak View, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000 of a thoracic aortic aneurysm at Ojai Valley Community Hospital.
He was a studio grip for more than 20 years and worked at numerous studios, the last being Paramount. He was a member of the Studio Grips' Local #80, and he was a World War II veteran involved in the Asian-Pacific campaign.
Mr. Warren is survived by his daughter Theresa Warren Roberts of Oak Park; sons Craig E. Warren of Agoura Hills, and Lance M. Warren of Bucyrus, Kan.
A memorial service was held Nov. 4 at his daughter's house. Mr. Warren will be buried at the Fort Scott National Cemetery in Kansas.
The family requests that any memorials be sent to the Children's Hunger Fund in Sylmar, Calif.

James 'Jim' Carrie Burell
James "Jim" Carrie Burell, 82, of Ojai, formerly of Youngstown and Struthers, Ohio, died at home Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, of cancer. He was born Aug. 2, 1918, in Murphy, N.C.
Mr. Burell was a member and past master of the Hillman Masonic Lodge #481 in Youngstown, a past president of the Past Masters Association of the 24th Masonic District, a charter member of the Ohio Lodge of Research and a former member of the York Rite.
After retirement, he and his wife Margaret Elizabeth (Rosenberger) settled in the Ojai Valley.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret Burell of Ojai; sons and daughters-in-law James and Cynthia Burell of Ojai, and John and Marge Burell of Poland, Ohio; brothers and sisters-in-law Lonnie C. and Florence Burrell of Youngstown, Ohio, and David F. and Goldie Burrell of Masury, Ohio; sister-in-law Helen and her husband Ernie Berkany of Youngstown; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Burell was preceded in death by his mother and father, brothers Gus J., Golden F. and Jesse L. Burrell and sisters Mary Shaffer and Bonnie Nichols.
The family would like to thank the staff of Assisted Home Hospice for their kindness and support during Mr. Burell's final days. They also would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Doug Nelson and the dedicated staff at Valley Oak Family Practice for their treatment and concern.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 11, at 10 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge #663, located at 309 Mallory Way in Ojai. An additional memorial service will be held in Cornersburg, Ohio, Nov. 18 at 11:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church.

Louise Kaye
Louise Kaye, also known as Louise Kachadoorian, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, after a long illness. She died at home under the care of Kaiser Hospice.
She was born in 1918 in East Texas, met and married Edward Kachadoorian during World War II, and relocated to Los Angeles where she was employed at Douglas Aircraft as a "Rosie the Riveter."
In later years, Mrs. Kachadoorian and her husband owned and operated several different businesses.
She is survived by her sister-in-law Elizabeth Pressey of Ojai; nephews James D. and Edward D. Pressey; niece Elizabeth M. Pressey; and several great nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held from noon to 8 p.m. Nov. 2 at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai. A graveside service was held Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura, officiated by the Rev. Dave Pressey of St. George's Anglican Church.

Frank Barreras De La Cruz
Frank Barreras De La Cruz, 67, of Ojai, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2000. He was born April 22, 1933, in Los Angeles, and lived in Ojai for 34 years, coming from Madera, Calif. He was a landscaper.
Mr. De La Cruz is survived by his daughter Lynette Chambers of California; son Frank Roberts of California; daughter and son-in-law Michelle and Alain Jaggli of Westminster, Calif.; daughter Diane De La Cruz of Ojai; son and daughter-in-law David and Lisa De La Cruz of Ventura; brothers Danny and Pete; sisters Carmen, Teresa and Maria; former wife and friend Bonnie De La Cruz; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 25 at Clausen Funeral Home, with Dr. Wilbur Skeels officiating. Following the services, there will be a gathering at the First Baptist Church of Ojai, 930 Grand Ave.

Edward B. Nowels
Edward B. Nowels, 68, of Ojai, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in Ventura, following a long illness. He was born June 2, 1932, in Lafayette, Ind., and lived in Ojai for 19 years, coming from Phoenix, Ariz.
Mr. Nowels is survived by his wife Joan Nowels of Ojai; sons Gary Nowels, and Scott Nowels, both of Phoenix; daughters Nancy Van, and Patty Lang, both of Phoenix; son David Sissum Sr. of Ojai; sister Beverly Ruth Stevenson of Ojai; sister Jean Ann Edgar of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and many grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son Phillip Nowels, who died at age 8.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home, with David Sissum Jr. officiating.

Kirk A. Heath
Kirk A. Heath, 38, of Oak View, died of heart failure Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, in Ventura. He was born June 19, 1962, in Ojai. He lived in Ventura County for more than 28 years and in Utah for 10 years.
Mr. Heath did mechanical and electrical work.
He is survived by his son Bryson Heath of Oakhurst, Calif.; daughter Devin Gallagher of Layton, Utah; mother Lana Nordyke of Ventura; father Donald Heath of Ventura; and sisters Theresa Woodward, Amy Murphy and Courtney Heath, all of Ventura.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 25, at 6 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3501 Loma Vista Road in Ventura. Bishop Lee Pulsipher will be officiating.

William "Willie" Bush
William "Willie" Bush, 66, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000. He was born Sept. 29, 1934, in St. Louis County, Mo.
Mr. Bush was a former Ojai resident and owned Willie's Upholstery in Ojai. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1955.
He is survived by his daughter Diana Bush and stepchildren Gwen and Bryan Rysavage, all of Hazelwood, Mo.; sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Aaron Murray of Ojai; one granddaughter; and six nieces, including Monica Raymond of Ojai.
Services were conducted Nov. 29 and were under the direction of Hutchens Mortuary in Florissant, Mo. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Florissant.
Connie Alma Madrid
Connie Alma Madrid, 68, of Ojai, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000 in Oxnard, after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 22, 1931, in Piru, Calif., and was a lifelong resident of Ventura County. She was employed as a florist with Vons in Ojai.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Gerrie and George Hardy of Oxnard; sons and daughters-in-law Danny and Cindy Madrid of Ojai, and Ricky and Lorie Madrid of Oxnard; son Tommy Madrid of Oxnard; father Manuel Torres of Oxnard; sister Juanita Ferguson of Oxnard; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother Nonie Moreno.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road in Ventura. Services will be Friday, Dec. 15, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with burial following at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.

Annabel Price-Arold
Annabel Price-Arold, 98, of Ojai, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000 at Glenwood Care Center in Oxnard after a brief illness. She was born Feb. 12, 1902, in Silver Lake, Kan., and had lived in Ojai for 36 years, coming from San Gabriel, Calif.
Mrs. Price-Arold had been a supervisor for Thermo Electric.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, Ojai Lodge #528, and a member of the Ojai Art Club.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Jack W. and Minnie J. Price of Camarillo; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Private interment
services will be held in Monrovia, Calif.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Francis "Fran" Mancel Ferrier
Francis "Fran" Mancel Ferrier, 87, of Ojai, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at his home following a brief illness. He was born April 16, 1913, in San Francisco, and lived in Ojai for 21 years, coming from Pacific Palisades.
Mr. Ferrier was a senior armament design engineer for McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft. He was active in the Santa Barbara/Puerto Vallarta Sister Cities Organization.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Ferrier of Ojai; daughter Cammy Michele Hacker of Westwood; son and daughter-in-law Stefan Mancel and Catherine Ferrier of Culver City; and four grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Ojai Affiliate.

Annette M. Owens
Annette M. Owens, 43, of Ojai, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000. She was born Sept. 14, 1957, in Ventura.
Miss Owens resided in Ojai most of her life, where she attended public schools and graduated from Nordhoff High School in 1976. She also attended Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah; BYU in Hawaii; and Mesa Junior College in Arizona, where she lived for approximately eight years.
For some years, she worked with her brother Jaret in his business operation on Santa Cruz Island. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, her life was one of service to others.
She is survived by her parents Duane and Doris Owens of Ojai; brothers Jaret Owens of Ojai and Oxnard, and Brian Owens of Homer, Alaska; sisters Janell Brubaker of Camino, Calif., and Linda Perkins of Show Low, Ariz.; 15 nieces and nephews; and four grand nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 411 San Antonio Drive in Ojai, Friday, Dec. 22, at 10 a.m. Interment
will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.

Lucy B. Crowder
Lucy B. Crowder, 97, of Ojai, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, at the Ojai Valley Community Hospital Skilled Nursing Center. She was born Sept. 5, 1903, in Jackson County, Tenn.
Mrs. Crowder came to Ventura County with her husband in 1924 and was a resident of Ventura County for 76 years. She resided in the Ojai Valley on the Lombardy Ranch from 1943 to 1947.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Vic and Grayce Crowder of Ojai, and Jerry and Dorothy Crowder of Tacoma, Wash.; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, John Burt Crowder.
Graveside services were held yesterday at 1 p.m. at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park in Camarillo.

Leora Gene Hagar
Leora Gene Hagar, 79, of Ojai, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, in Ojai. She was born Oct. 25, 1921, in Kerman, Calif. She had been an Ojai resident for four years.
Mrs. Hagar is survived by her son Charles K. Hagar of Ojai; daughter Charlette Harmon of Paramount, Calif.; sister Mari Hanneman of Olympia, Wash.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles A. Hagar in 1995.
Private services will be held.

Thomas "Tom" Pedersen
Thomas "Tom" Pedersen, 62, of Ojai, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital Skilled Nursing Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born July 4, 1938, in Los Angeles, and lived in Ojai for 23 years, coming from Los Angeles.
Mr. Pedersen, an accountant, was a member of the American Legion Post #482 and the Elks Lodge #1492. He served in the U.S. Army. He was also an active member of the Humane Society and played Santa Claus for the society's annual holiday photo sessions.
He is survived by his companion Antoinette "Tonie" R. Bourgoin of Ojai; and brother Cassius Hart of Cathedral City, Calif.
Private services have been held.

Barbara Ann Riggs
Barbara Ann Riggs, 73, of Ojai, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at home in her sleep after a lengthy illness. She was born Aug. 7, 1927, in Rockford, Ill., and lived in Ojai for 39 years.
She was a registered nurse at Ojai Valley Community Hospital and Santa Paula Hospital for many years. Shortly before her retirement, she also worked as an R.N. at the Ventura County Honor Farm and Main Jail.
Mrs. Riggs is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Dwight and Doreen Riggs, her aunt Catherine Roguski, two grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter, all of Ojai.
She was preceded in death by her husband James L. Riggs in 1996.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 22, at 11 a.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai. Private interment
will be at Santa Paula Cemetery.

Rachel Josephine Mason
Rachel Josephine Mason, 81, of Ojai, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000. She was born March 28, 1919, in Canada, and had been an elementary school teacher with the Oxnard Unified School District.
A memorial service is being held today at 11 a.m. at Ojai Presbyterian Church, 304 N. Foothill Road in Ojai.

Travis Clayton Griffin
Travis Clayton Griffin, 90, of Paramount, Calif., died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Paramount Convalescent Hospital after a brief bout with pneumonia. He was born Jan. 17, 1910, in Chester, Texas, to Mary Virginia (Whitehead) and John Nathan Griffin.
Mr. Griffin graduated from Breckenridge High School in Breckenridge, Texas, in 1929. While attending high school, he worked part-time for F.W. Woolworth and later became a store manager at Woolworth's in Dallas, Texas. He received basic military training through Citizens' Military Training Camps at Fort Sam Houston in the summer of 1929, but was classified "4-F" during World War II. He married Esther Elisabeth Love on July 20, 1932.
Mr. Griffin worked as a retail store manager and/or owner-manager his entire life at stores in Dallas, Alpine and Odessa, Texas; Chicago, Ill.; Silver City, N.M.; Phoenix, Ariz.; and Brawley, Los Angeles, Arvin, Ventura, Saugus and Torrance, Calif. From 1961 through 1965, he managed Sprouse Reitz in Ventura, and worked for TG & Y from 1965 to 1966, remodeling older stores, including one in Ojai, Calif., which is now the Ben Franklin store. He retired from his dress shop in Torrance, Travis' Clothes Line, in January of 1996.
Mr. Griffin was active in his many communities as a member of the chambers of commerce, Kiwanis and other service organization, and churches.
He is survived by his son John Rathbun Griffin of Yucca, Ariz.; daughter Linda Love Griffin of Ojai; daughter and son-in-law Mary Elisabeth and Marty Martinez of Ventura; sons and daughters-in-law Clayton Lee and Kelly Griffin of Santa Barbara, Calif., and James Michael and Phyllis Griffin of Norwalk, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins in Texas.
Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Elisabeth Love Griffin on July 4, 1995, and grandson Eddie Frakes on March 6, 1990.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Grace Elizabeth "Betty" Harris
Grace Elizabeth "Betty" Harris, 83, of Ojai, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at the Ojai Valley Community Hospital Skilled Nursing Center. She was born July 18, 1917, in Chicago, Ill., where she graduated from the University of Chicago.
During World War II, she worked at Hughes Aircraft in Los Angeles. After the war, she became a social worker and was also active in the World Federalist movement. She was active in folk dancing, Dixieland jazz, hiking and gardening.
Mrs. Harris moved to Ojai in 1989. She was a first-grade teacher in the Simi School District for 25 years. She was interested in the teachings of J. Krishnamurti and attended his talks in Switzerland, as well as in the Oak Grove in Ojai, where a tree will be planted in her memory.
She is survived by her son Christopher Harris of Ojai; daughters Noelle Wallace in the United Arab Emerites, and Tamara Deems of Seattle, Wash.; sisters Selma Connor of Chicago, and Mary Essel of Ojai; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The memorial tree planting in the Oak Grove will be held Thursday, Dec. 28, at 1 p.m.

Virginia Fullmer Berggren
Virginia Fullmer (Jaydee) Berggren, 82, of Ojai, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Acacias Care Center after a long illness with Alzheimers' disease. She was born Jan. 19, 1918, in London Mill, Ill.
Mrs. Berggren devoted her life to education, as a school administrator and teacher. She began her teaching career in a country school in Fairview, Ill., in 1936. She met her husband, Stuart Berggren, in Illinois, and they were married on May 1, 1941. They moved to Ventura County and Mr. Berggren joined the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Mrs. Berggren worked as a telephone operator during the early years of the war, and then taught in field schools at the bases where her husband was stationed. After the war, they returned to Ventura County, where their daughter Sonja was born in 1947.
In 1949, the Berggren family moved to Ojai, and Mrs. Berggren began teaching at Santa Ana School. In 1955, she started teaching at San Antonio School, where she became principal in 1964. Mrs. Berggren later served as principal of Topa Topa Elementary School and Meiners Oaks Elementary School, where she was working at the time of her retirement from the Ojai Unified School District in 1979.
She is survived by her husband Stuart G. Berggren of Ojai; daughter and son-in-law Sonja Berggren and Patrick Seaver of Long Beach; brother Dr. Daniel Fullmer of Honolulu, Hawaii; sister Nina Norris of Ojai; and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Berggren was preceded in death by her brother Dr. Ethan Fullmer of Huntington Beach and sister Catherine Johnsen of Ojai.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa.

Bobbie McCabe
Bobbie McCabe, 64, of Ojai, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital. She was born Feb. 19, 1936, in San Fernando, Calif., and had lived in Ojai for 28 years, coming from Aberdeen, Wash.
Mrs. McCabe was a secretary at Point Mugu, a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ojai, and a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
She is survived by her son Nick L. Daily of Ojai; daughter Cherie McCabe of Ventura; and sister and brother-in-law Joan and Floyd Ruggles of Aberdeen.
Rosary will be recited at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. today at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, with Father Patrick Keane, OSA, officiating. Interment
at Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard will follow the service.

Rodney P. Smith
Rodney P. Smith, 85, of Ojai, died Thurs., Dec. 21, 2000, after a brief illness. He was born April 26, 1915, in Berkeley, Calif., and moved to Glendale, Calif., at the age of 14.
Mr. Smith graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles, and served his country during World War II from June 8, 1942 until Feb. 24, 1946 as a quartermaster in the U.S. Army.
He was briefly employed in the aerospace industry before joining the U.S. Postal Service for a 40-year career.
Mr. Smith is survived by his sister Shirley B. Ferrier of Ojai; niece Cammy Hacker of Westwood; and nephew Stefan M. Ferrier of Culver City.
