Scott D. Halliday
Scott D. Halliday, 45, died Monday, Nov. 17 from brain cancer at his home in Santa Barbara. He is survived by his wife, Lori Beardsley, daughter of Joy and Harry Bodell, of Ojai; his parents Eugene and Renate Halliday, of Yountville, Calif.; and his siblings Ashley, Tracy, Alex, Toby Lee and Ethan. Mr. Halliday served as director of a statewide organization promoting public-private partnerships between local elected officials and business leaders from around the state. He was a county ombudsman/recovery coordinator following the 1990 Santa Barbara fire and worked for Santa Barbara County as a consultant on economic development from 1995 to 1996. He also worked as the executive assistant to Santa Barbara County Supervisor Tom Rogers from 1993 to 1994. As a resident of Santa Barbara County since 1983, he served as a consultant on special projects for the county and city of Santa Barbara and Association of Governments between 1988 and 1993. Scott and Lori Halliday received years of support from the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the foundation, 300 W. Pueblo, Santa Barbara, CA 93105. Memorial services were private.

Earl L. Penrod
Earl L. Penrod, 84, of Ojai, died Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Ojai Valley Community Hospital Skilled nursing Center. He was born May 12, 1914, in Missouri. A resident of Ojai for 15 years, Mr. Penrod was a member of the 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner. He is survived by his sisters Ruth Matthews and Annavene Bunn, both of Ojai; brother John Penrod, of Texas; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of McDermott-Crockett Mortuary in Santa Barbara.

Donald Rivers
Donald Rivers, 97, of Ojai, died Friday, Nov. 20 at his home after a long illness. He was borne Dec. 26, 1900 in Santa Fe, N.M. and had lives in Ojai for 53 years. Mr. Rivers was a cement contract supervisor with Ray Gomez Construction until 1970, when he went into business for himself, retiring in 1987. He was affiliated with the Cement Mason and was instrumental in the construction of Hollywood Park and all of the road construction in Oxnard before 1971. During World War II, he worked at Los Alamitos, N.M. (site of the atomic bomb experiments) and was a graduate of St. Michael's College in New Mexico. Mr. Rivers is survived by his wife Lola Mae Rivers, of Ojai; son W.R. Rivers; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 10 a.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai. Private interment will be at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.

Margaret "Peg" Coultas
Longtime Ojai educator Margaret Homer Coultas, 82, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, after a long bout with cancer.
She was born in Ventura Oct. 27, 1916, and was an Ojai Valley resident for 51 years.
Mrs. Coultas graduated from Ventura High School and attended the University of California at Berkeley where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in science in 1937.
As a physical education teacher in Ventura, she met and later married James A. Coultas, The couple moved to Ojai in 1946 and began running a family-owned citrus ranch.
After raising two children, Mrs. Coultas returned to teaching in 1954 at Matilija Junior High School. She taught physical education for 23 years, retiring in 1977. She was also the dean of girls.
Mrs. Coultas was a member of the Soule Park Women's Golf Club, the Ojai Valley Community Hospital Auxiliary, the University of California at Berkeley Alumni Association, Gamma Phi Beta sorority and the Prytanean Honor Society.
She is survived by her daughter Terry Coultas Wilson of Ojai; son James W. Coultas of Ojai; and granddaughters Tracy Lyn Wilson of Ventura and Kali Lynn Coultas of Ojai.
She was preceded in death by her husband James A. Coultas in 1981, and her parents Dr. Ralph and Mabel Lawrence Homer of Ventura.
Private services will be held Saturday, Nov. 28, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Ojai. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Ojai Humane Society.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Ruth Kitzrow
Ruth Kitzrow, long-time resident of Ojai, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998.
She was born in Oklahoma and would have been 73 on Feb. 3.
She is survived by her daughters Terry Kitzrow of Ojai and Karen Hopper of Boise, Idaho; sister Lois Glaser of Pittsburg, Kan.; and granddaughter Kristen Green of Meridian, Idaho.
Mrs. Kitzrow's daughters would like to express their appreciation and thanks to the many friends and neighbors for the kindness, help and caring they provided to Ruth during her difficult times.
She was preceded in death by her husband and favorite pinochle partner, Waldemar Kitzrow.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Charles Paul McNeil
Charles Paul McNeil, 62, of Ojai died Jan. 31, 1998, at his home.
Mr. McNeil worked for HELP of Ojai.
No services are planned at this time.

Brother Henry McAteer, O.H.
Brother Henry McAteer, O.H., 85, of Ojai, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998.
Brother McAteer was born May 23, 1912, in Belfast, Ireland and was a Ventura County resident for the past 12 years.
He worked in supportive services for St. Joseph's Health and Retirement Center in Ojai for the past 12 years. Prior to this, he was a psychiatric nurse. He professed and took his vows Sept. 29, 1931 in England.
Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at St. Joseph's Chapel in Ojai. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Chapel. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, please honor Brother McAteer with a donation to St. Joseph's Chapel, 2464 E. Ojai Ave., Ojai, CA 93023.
Arrangements are under the direction of Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura.

Bob Russell
Bob Russell, 76, of Ojai, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital of heart failure.
He was born Oct. 28, 1921, in Denver, Colo. and had lived in Ojai 46 years, coming from Pensacola, Fla.
Mr. Russell was an equipment operator. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He is survived by his ex-wife Arvid Russell-Callicoat; daughter Vonnie Russell of Eagle Point, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law Shannon and Earl Whetsell of Oak View; brother Jim Russell of Ventura; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society, 402 Bryant St., Ojai, CA 93023.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Helen J. Meek
Helen J. Meek, 89, of Ojai, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998.
She was born Nov. 26, 1908, in Arcaida, Ind. and moved to California as a small child.
Mrs. Meek was an apartment house owner and manager in Santa Monica. She lived in the Ojai Valley Community Hospital the past three years.
She is survived by her daughter Bettee Thomas of Ojai; son Philip Meek; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Denise Bianchi-Loughman
Longtime Ojai resident Denise Bianchi-Loughman, 47, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, after a brief illness at the Ojai Valley Community Hospital.
She is survived by her daughter Heather, her parents and sisters Donna and Kim.
Friends are invited to participate in a sharing of memories and potluck at the home of Aleta and Herb London at 3468 Grand Ave. Sunday at 1 p.m. Call Linda Coultas at 646-5521 for more information.
Donations can be made to the Denise Bianchi-Loughman Memorial Fund at Ojai Valley Bank.

John Ennis Doyle Elom Sr.
John Ennis Doyle Elom Sr., 65, of Ojai, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital.
He was born Dec. 17, 1932, in Palestine, Texas, and had lived in Ojai 40 years, coming from Shafter, Calif.
Mr. Elom was a commercial carpenter and a home builder for People's Self-Help Housing.
Mr. Elom was also a musician.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Elom of Ventura; son John Elom Jr. of Ojai; sisters Winifred Crane of Kenai, Alaska, and Caroline Gannon of Rough and Ready, Calif.; brother Bill Elom of Taft, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Chapel by the Pines, 195 Mahoney St. in Oak View, with Pastor Dennis J. Mulkey officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Altha Edith Cook
Altha Edith Cook, 88, a resident of Ojai, passed away Feb. 11, 1998 at the Ojai Valley Community Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 21, 1909 in Oklahoma and had been a Ventura County resident since 1964, coming from Grass Valley.
Mrs. Cook was a homemaker and family historian who loved animals.
She is survived by her sister Belva Edwards of Ojai. She was predeceased by her husband Clifford O. Cook in 1986.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16 at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park, with Pastor Scott Harrell officiating.

Rosalie Irene Kosub
Rosalie Irene Kosub, 63, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura after a long illness.
She was born July 31, 1934, in Ventura, and was a lifelong Ojai Valley resident.
Mrs. Kosub had been a physician's assistant for Dr. Martin Conroy and also worked at Ojai Valley Community Hospital. She was the first female police officer for the Ojai Police Department.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Todd and Trina Kosub of Standish, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law Debbie and Bob Young of Oak View; brothers and sisters-in-law Albert and Joyce Miller of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Sam and Donna Miller of Ventura; sister-in-law Peg Huber of Chico, Calif.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Todd in 1992.
Visitation by friends was held at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai Feb. 17 from noon to 8 p.m. with rosary being recited at 7 p.m.
Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. today at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Cemetry in Ventura.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.

Mary Beauvais
Mary Beauvais, 81, of Oak View, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at her home after a short illness.
She was born May 28, 1916, in Victoria, Canada, and after moving to the United States became a naturalized citizen.
Mrs. Beauvais was a real estate broker in Las Vegas.
She is survived by her sons Keith Allen Pollard of Oak View and Raymond Wilfred Pollard of Detroit, Mich.; sister Alma Satterlee of Los Osos, Calif.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at Clausen Funeral Home with Keith and Raymond Pollard officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20 at the Southern Nevada National Cemetery in Boulder City, Nev.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Leo "Lee" Wilson
Leo "Lee" Wilson, 85, of Ojai, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 16, 1912, in Buffalo, N.Y., and had lived in Ojai 50 years, coming from Los Angeles.
Mr. Wilson was a fireman for the U.S. Navy and a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Teresa "Tessie" Wilson of Ojai; granddaughters Cynthia L. Henry, Deborah L. Heinz and Janette Dickey, all of Cheyenne Wells, Colo.; grandsons Jack Matthew Steele of Uncasville, Conn., and James Michael Steele of Cheyenne Wells, Colo; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his son Ralph Wilson and daughter Jeanne Steele.
Family services will be held.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Attention: Memorial Department, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Howard Mace
Howard Mace, 85, of Ojai, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born July 9, 1912, in Rocky, Okla., and had lived in Ojai 10 years, coming from Maywood, Calif.
Mr. Mace was a welder and a member of Elks Lodge #1415 of Huntington Park.
He is survived by his wife Lillian "Lil" Mace of Ojai; daughter and son-in-law Maureen R. and Bret Breton of Ojai; son and daughter-in-law Mike and Charlene Mace of Anaheim; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai with Norman Slert, M.A., officiating.
Memorials may be made to HELP of Ojai.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.

Selma "Sally" Bennett
Selma "Sally" Bennett, 78, of Lake Forest, Calif., died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at Lake Forest Nursing Home from complications resulting from Alzheimer's disease.
She was born June 12, 1919, in Covina, Calif. She moved to Ojai in 1963 where she resided for 32 years.
Mrs. Bennett worked as discharge planner and utilization review at Ojai Valley Community Hospital. She was a registered nurse who graduated from Knapp College of Nursing in Santa Barbara in 1940 and was an Army veteran.
In the early 1960s, she spent six months in Taif, Saudi Arabia, as part of a team from Ojai Valley Community Hospital and National Medical Enterprises to commission a hospital.
During her later years in Ojai, she was active in the Red Cross, Cancer Society and Reach to Recovery.
Mrs. Bennett is survived by her sons Gregory Jones of Lake Forest, and Randall Jones of Boise, Idaho; daughter Rebecca Jones of Bell Canyon, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
She was the widow of Donald Jones of Riverside and Fred Bennett of Ojai.
Mrs. Bennett was cremated and her ashes were scattered at sea. Private memorial service arrangements are pending.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association are requested.
Arrangements were under the direction of O'Connor Laguna Hills Mortuary.

Sue Kilbourne
Sue Kilbourne, 59, a former resident of Ojai, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, in Littleton, Colo. She was born Feb. 23, 1938.
She was married to her Nordhoff High School sweetheart, Michael Kilbourne.
He joined the U.S. Air Force and they lived in many places, mostly in England and Japan.
Their last tour of duty ended in Denver and they made it their permanent residence.
Mrs. Kilbourne is survived by her husband Michael Kilbourne of Denver; son Mark Allen Kilbourne of Shannon, Miss.; parents Harry and Catherine Vanier of Ojai; sister Jane Polus of Upland, Calif.; brother Bill Vanier of Ventura; five grandchildren; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Leigh Ann Kilbourne in October 1995.
She is to be interred in the Rocky Mountains.

John Rankin
John Rankin, 38, of Ojai, died suddenly Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at his home.
He was born May 11, 1959, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and graduated from Algonquin College with a degree in survey technology in 1981.
Mr. Rankin was employed with AMF Scientific Drilling International from 1981 to 1984 and by the City of Oxnard as a construction inspector from 1985 to the present. He was actively involved in softball and ice hockey leagues in the area.
Mr. Rankin is survived by his wife of 13 years, Joan Rankin of Ojai; step-children Michael and Gina Bernacchia of Ojai; sisters Katherine Wachtl of Switzerland and Ann Rankin of Montreal, Quebec; brothers Kevin and Brian Rankin of Montreal, Quebec; mother Micheline Cote and step-father Lucian Auger of Montreal, Quebec; mother- and father-in-law Janice and William Sortno of Ojai; nieces Carly and Emily Rankin of Switzerland; and numerous relatives in Montreal and Cape Britain Islands.
He was the son of the late David Rankin of Cape Britain Islands.
A memorial service will be celebrated at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 21 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church and a reception will follow at the church hall.

Agnes Calhoun
Agnes Calhoun, 95, of Ojai, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998 in Pasadena, Calif.
She was born Dec. 28, 1903 in Nebraska, and was a longtime resident of Ventura and the Ojai area, most recently as a resident of Lomita Lodge (now Royal Gardens) in Meiners Oaks.
She is survived by her son James Drommond of Flagstaff, Ariz.; brother Robert Connelly of Wayzata, Minn.; nephew Robert Lautzenheiser of Santa Maria; niece Patricia Clark of Phoenix; and daughter-in-law Carmen Sosa of West Covina, Calif.
Services were performed by the Neptune Society of Los Angeles.
