Judith "Judye" Lynn Slawson Johnson
Judith "Judye" Lynn Slawson Johnson, 49, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, in Ojai.
She was born May 25, 1948, in Orange, Calif.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her son Chaska Slawson of Carpinteria; her mother Jean Mecham of Carpinteria; sisters Kathy Osborne of Sandy, Utah, Barbara Morgan of Carpinteria, and Alice Bingham of Carpinteria; step-brother Jeff Mecham of Carpinteria; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at Carpinteria Community Church, 1111 Vallecito Road in Carpinteria, Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Humane Society in Ojai or Klein Bottle in Santa Barbara.

Richard Donald Van Derck
Richard Donald Van Derck, 76, of Ojai, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, after a lengthy illness.
He was born to Richard William and Genevieve Van Derck July 23, 1921 in Salt Lake City, and had lived in Ojai for the past 12 years after retiring.
Upon graduating from Judge Memorial High School in Salt Lake City, he enrolled in the University of Utah where he earned bachelor of science degrees in aeronautical and mechanical engineering.
After graduation in 1942, he reported for active duty in the Navy and saw training at Pratt and Whitney, San Diego Naval Air Station and Sand Point Naval Air Station.
He was then assigned to the Carrier Air Group Nine aboard the USS Lexington and thereafter the USS Yorktown. During his tour of duty, the Air Group participated in the first carrier strikes on the Japanese mainland at Tokyo, the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and several other actions including the sinking of the last Japanese battleship, Yamato.
After the war, he worked as an engineer for Boeing in Seattle and then for Utah Oil Company in Salt Lake City and Boise, Idaho.
In 1955, he joined Montezuma Bearing Company as general manager and moved to Albuquerque, N.M.
The company expanded throughout all the western states and was ultimately bought out by a large eastern conglomerate, Kaman Corporation.
Mr. Van Derck continued with the newly renamed Kaman Bearings and Supply, serving in various managerial positions in Arizona and Utah until his retirement in 1985 as vice president and general manager of the intermountain region.
He loved aviation and logged hundreds of hours as a private pilot.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 53 years, Betty Van Derck of Ojai; son and daughter-in-law Rick and Linda Van Derck of Kuwait; daughter and son-in-law Sheila and Tim Merritt of Mesa, Ariz.; daughter Robin Holland of Ojai; sisters Genevieve Robinson of Sedona, Ariz. and Patricia Van Derck of Blue Springs, Mo.; and 12 grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.

Natalie C. Haines
Natalie C. Haines, 97, of Ojai, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, in Ojai. She was born June 1, 1900 in Forrest Hills, Mass. and had been a resident of Ojai for 22 years.
Mrs. Haines was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, Alpha Omacron Phi, Maud Booth Home, Haven House and Red Cross.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Audrey and Terry of Ojai; granddaughters Laura of Colorado City, Ariz. and Carol of Rosamond; grandson John of Grass Valley; 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-granchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband J. Frederick Haines.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Frances "Fran" Newland
Frances "Fran" Newland, 75, of Ojai, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital.
She was born Aug. 22, 1922, in Lima, Ohio, and came to Ventura County 12 years ago to be with her daughter and family. She was an Ojai resident for seven years.
Mrs. Newland had been a grocery store manager, a hairdresser and a homemaker. She served in the Women's Army Corp during World War II.
She is survived by her daughter Nancy Crone of Ojai Valley; sisters Janice Gnagy and Janet Pope, both of Indiana; sister and brother-in-law Fonda and Floyd Bitters of Folsom, Calif.; brothers Russ Valenti and Robert Valenti, both of Ohio; brother and sister-in-law James and Josephine Valenti of Ohio; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai Saturday, March 7 from noon to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 1:15 p.m. Monday, March 9 at Riverside National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her burial fund at Clausen Funeral Home, 316 E. Matilija St., Ojai, CA 93023.

Claudia Jordan
Claudia Jordan, 91, of Ojai, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, three days before her 92nd birthday.
The daughter of Henry and Lillian May Ahlf of Bradner, Ohio, who came west to the California oil fields, she grew up in Ventura and moved to Ojai in 1934, following her marriage to Doug Jordan.
Mrs. Jordan and her husband managed grocery stores in Ventura and Ojai, principally the Ojai Grocery, and then Jordans' Sporting Goods after their retirement in 1969.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ojai and active with the Ojai Valley Women's Club and the American Red Cross.
She is survived by her son Richard Adams of Ojai; grandchildren Farley Adams of Orcutt, Calif., Susan McTague of Hathaway Pines, Calif. and Kim Berley Fullenwider of Ojai; and nine great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Jordan was preceded in death by her husband Doug Jordan.
A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Ojai, 930 Grand Ave. at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 7 with Dr. Wilbur Skeels presiding.
In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial gifts to the First Baptist Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Gladys Jenner
Gladys B. Jenner, 101, of Ojai, died Wednesday, March 4, 1998 at the Ojai Valley Community Hospital after a short illness.
She was born Dec. 3, 1896 in Fresno and had lived in Ojai for 40 years, coming from Hollywood.
Mrs. Jenner was a teacher and counselor for the Los Angeles Unified School District. She is survived by her two nieces, Bernice May of Arroyo Grande and Patricia Cherniss of San Antonio.
Friends may call on Monday, March 9, 1998, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home.
No services will be held.
Interment will be beside her husband Larry, at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Donald Frowein
Donald Frowein, 86, of Ojai, died Friday, March 6, 1998, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 10, 1912, in San Diego and lived in Ojai for 43 years, coming from Los Angeles.
Mr. Frowein had been a truck driver and was a member of the local Teamsters Union #357. He was a volunteer at HELP of Ojai and a former manager of the Whispering Oaks apartments. He was also a member of the Meiners Oaks Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife Delora Frowein of Ojai; daughters Sheila Carlton of Ojai and Linda Reyes of Santa Paula; sons Gene Foyil of Edmond, Okla., Steve Foyil of Ojai, and Ronald Frowein of California City, Calif.; sisters Meryl Inzer of Redondo Beach, Calif., Nadine Russek of Pasadena, Calif. and Edra Dickson of Vacaville, Calif; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held. Memorial donations may be made to HELP of Ojai.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Gerald Milton "Jerry" Williams
Gerald Milton "Jerry" Williams, 74, of Ventura, died Saturday, March 7, 1998, in Ojai after a short illness.
He was born Dec. 4, 1923, in Long Beach, Calif., and was a resident of Ventura County for 70 years.
Mr. Williams was employed by the Arrowhead Company for 47 years. Before retiring in 1988, he drove more than one million miles for Arrowhead and received several safety awards.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling and sharing stories with his friends and family.
A member of The Williams Brothers Racing Team of the 1950s, he had a lifelong interest in all things automotive.
Mr. Williams is survived by his wife of 42 years, Gerda of Ventura; son and daughter-in-law Michael and Sharon of Ojai; brothers Herb of Ojai, Ron of Ventura and Monte of Bishop, Calif.; and grandson Brian of Ojai.
Memorial services are pending at Clausen Funeral Home. Donations may be made to United Blood Services.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Irene V. Hunter
Irene V. Hunter, 88, of Ojai, died Sunday, March 8, 1998. She was born July 5, 1909.
Mrs. Hunter was a resident of Buttonwillow, Calif., from 1937 to 1992, and due to ill health, moved to Ojai to be near her daughter.
She is survived by two daughters, Delores "Dee" Pulley of Ojai, and Bettie Brandon of San Francisco; son Clifford Hunter of Ridgecrest, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandsons.
Graveside services will be held at Shafter Memorial Park today at 1 p.m. Pastor John Eby of Porterville will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai..

Susan M. Holten
Susan M. Holten, 86, of Oak View, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital.
She was born Dec. 22, 1911, in Pueblo, Colo. In 1945, she moved to Casitas Springs. In 1955, the family moved to Oak View where she resided until November 1997.
Mrs. Holten had been a resident of Casa Blanca Alzheimer's facility for the past four months.
During her lifetime, she was a homemaker and a girls' group supervisor at the Ventura School for Girls on Ventura Avenue and retired in 1967. She was a member of the Women of the Moose, Ventura Chapter, and the California State Employees' Association for nearly 50 years.
Mrs. Holten is survived by her son Roy Holten of Oak View; son and daughter-in-law Jon and Lawanna Holten of Las Vegas; daughter and son-in-law Harriet and Archer Roe of Glenrock, Wyo.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons and her husband, Arthur Holten, in 1993.
Services will be held Saturday, March 21, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai with Pastor Dennis Mulkey officiating. Interment will be at Nordhoff Cemetery in Ojai.
Visitation will be today from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m.
A luncheon will be provided by the Ojai Valley Moose Lodge in Oak View following the funeral service.
Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Marvin G. Metcalf
Marvin G. Metcalf, 83, of Ojai, died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born Jan. 14, 1915, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and lived in Ojai for 26 years.
He had been a Ventura County resident since 1935, coming from Lexington, Ken.
Mr. Metcalf was a distributor for Union Oil products in Ventura County.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Knights of Columbus and was active in HELP of Ojai's braille group. Mr. Metcalf was an avid golfer and loved his garden.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Metcalf of Ojai; daughters Mary Kathryn Guenter of San Diego, Diana La Brue of Roseville and Marlene Metcalf of Paso Robles; son Michael Metcalf of Atascadero; sisters Louise Bennett of Tampa, Fla. and Guineth Cottrell of Canoga Park; step-children Betty Wagner of Carson City, Nev., James Fielder of Perris, Calif. and Daniel Fielder of Daly City, Calif.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one step great-grandson
Friends may call at Clausen Funeral Home today from noon to 8 p.m. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 1998, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Ojai with Rev. Coryl Lassen-Willems officiating.
Interment will follow at Nordhoff Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Braille Institute in Santa Barbara.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Charles R. Sloan
Charles R. Sloan, 95, of Ojai, died March 12, 1998, at his residence. He was born July 30, 1902 in Elizabeth, N.J.
He and his wife, the Rev. Irma Glen, retired to Ojai in the mid-1970s. He owned the Meiners Library and was very active in community work.
Mr. Sloan was a Religious Science minister and practitioner for 75 years.
He is survived by his son Robert Sloan of Atascadero; daughter Margaret Schanck of Santa Cruz; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 21, 1998, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Health and Retirement Center, 2464 E. Ojai Ave. in Ojai.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to HELP of Ojai, Hospice of Ventura or St. Joseph's Health and Retirement Center.
Arrangements are under the direction of McDermott-Crockett Mortuary in Santa Barbara.
