Charles Edward Bryson
Charles Edward Bryson, of Dyersburg, 65, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, Thanksgiving Day, at his residence. He was a former supervisor for a grocery store and factory.
Visitation was Friday evening at Northside Church of Jesus Christ in Dyersburg.
Services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at the church, with Pastor R. Winstead officiating.
Pallbearers were Liberty Bryson, Robert Bryson, John Carroll, Ken Clark, Jody Hurst, Tony Ray, Chester Brown, and Jeff Fortner.
Burial was in New Haven Cemetery near Ridgely, with Curry Funeral Home in charge.
He was born July 30, 1937, in Dyersburg to the late Gladys R. Noel Bryson and Edgar Davis Bryson.
He was a member of Northside Church of Jesus Christ.
He leaves his wife, Hazel Bryson, of Dyersburg; a daughter, Teresa Brown of Lexington; four sons, James Bryson of Newbern, Tom Bryson of Summerville, S.C., Gerald Bryson of Dyersburg and Michael Bryson of Finley; two sisters, Shirley Winstead of Dyersburg and Nancy Carroll of Finley; three brothers, James A. Bryson, Levon Bryson and David Bryson, all of Dyersburg; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Verlia Warren Isbell
Verlia Warren Isbell, 91, of Union City, a native of Ridgely, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at Union City Manor Nursing Center. A beautician and hair stylist, she was the retired owner and operator of Verlia's Beauty Shop. She was the widow of Homer Isbell.
Visitation will be today, Wednesday evening, at White Ranson Funeral Home in Union City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Richard Dickerson officiating. Music will be provided by Richard Dickerson and The Roberts, and include "He Touched Me" and "Precious Lord, Take My Hand".
Pallbearers will be Jerry Nye, Max Nicholson, Ilar Warren, Tim Riggins. Honorary pallbearers will be men of the Sanctuary Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church of Union City.
Burial will be in East View Cemetery of Union City.
She was born March 22, 1911, in Ridgely, to the late Nevada Marshbanks Warren and John David Warren.
She was a 1930 graduate of Ridgely High School, and a graduate of Molar's Beauty College in Memphis. She owned and operated Verlia's Beauty Shop for over 40 years.
She married Homer Isbell, who preceded her in death.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Union City, where she was a member of the adult choir for over 40 years.
She leaves two nieces, Juanita Walker Nye of Weatherford, Okla., and Jeannie Walker Nicholson of Amarillo, Texas.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Georgia Wyatt, Amy Walker, Ruth Dietzel and Medea Feasel; a niece, Ruthie Dietzel Blankenship.
Katherine Johnson Hoffhaus,
formerly of Tiptonville, 90
Katherine Johnson Hoffhaus, 90, of Florence Ala., died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at her home after an extended illness. She was the widow of Jack Hoffhaus, former publisher of the Lake County Banner.
Visitation was at 1:30 Sunday at Greenview Memorial Chapel, followed by services at 2:30 in the chapel. Dr. Carl R. Gebhardt officiated.
Pallbearers were Ben Crane, Dr. Brad DeGroote, Fred Boone, Alton Bartlett, Allyn Crane and Sam Minor.
Burial was in Greenview Memorial Park.
She was born in Dyersburg to the late W.C. and Olive Johnson.
According to her family, she was a "born" schoolteacher and a dedicated homemaker. She ably managed her husband's newspaper, the Lake County Banner, in Tiptonville during his years of overseas service in World War II. They sold the paper in 1949, and bought a newspaper in Hartselle, Ala.
She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church until moving to Florence in 1993, when she joined First Christian Church.
While in Hartselle she was church librarian, an active member of the Groover Sunday School Class, and often opened her home to visiting evangelists and lay people. She belonged to the current Review Club, was an avid music and book lover, and an artist who happily shared her gift of painting with others.
She leaves a daughter, Ann H. Crane and husband, Gene, of Florence, Ala.; two grandchildren, Ben Crane and wife, Mary Jen, Genna C. DeGroote and husband, Brad; five great-grandchildren, Ryan, Corey, and Ian Crane, Anne and Parker DeGroote, all of Florence.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Jack W. Hoffhaus; three sisters, Pauline J. Lewis, Ellender J. Williams and Pennie B. Johnson; two brothers William Carey Johnson and Earnest A. Johnson.
Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church of Florence, Hartselle First United Methodist Church, Hospice of the Shoals, and the Children's Museum of Florence.
R.G. Harrison
R. G. Harrison, 78, of Fulton, Ky., died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at Parkway Regional Hospital in Fulton. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, and retired from Sloan Valve Company of Franklin Park, Ill. He returned to this area in 1976.
Services were at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at Hornbeak Funeral Chapel in Fulton, with Thomas Bivens officiating.
Burial was in Greenlea Cemetery.
He leaves several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lovie Harrison; three sisters; six brothers; and his parents, Tom and Katie Grissom Harrison.
James E. Peal
James Eutran Peal, 82, of Union city, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Baptist Hospital, Union City. He was a disabled veteran who served with the Army in World War II, serving overseas as a paratooper landing in Normandy.
Visitation was Friday evening at White Ranson Funeral Home.
Service were at 1 p.m. Friday at the White-Ranson Chapel, with Ricky Burse, Church of Christ minister, officiating.
Burial was in the Obion County Memorial Gardens at Union City.
He was born March 18, 1920, in Crockett County, Tenn., to the late Annie Mansfield Peal and John S. Peal.
He was a Protestant.
He leaves two daughters, Barbara Foster of Bartlett and Sandra Soins of Johnson City; two sisters, Dorothy Lemonds of Ridgely, Carmen Newell of Trimble; two brothers, J.S. Peal of Union City and Marlon Peal of Chicago, Ill.; four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Annie and John S. Peal.
John Huizingh
Word has been received here of the death of John Huizingh of Denver, Colo., on Friday, Feb. 14, 2003. He was married to the former Margaret Hale of Ridgely.
Burial was Thursday, Feb. 20, at the National Cemetery at Denver.

Houston Williams, of Florissant, Mo., formerly of Tiptonville, died Sunday night, Feb. 23, 2003, after an extended illness. He will be cremated, and a graveside service held here later.

Bobby W. Markham
Bobby W. Markham, 61, of Ridgely, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Jackson Regional Medical Center. He was a retired employee of Lake County Lumber Co. in Wynnburg, and served with the Army National Guard.
Visitation was Monday evening at Ridgely Chapel of Curry Funeral Home.
Services were at the chapel at 1 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Archie Larry officiating.
Pallbearers were Jason Joyce, Stanley Markham II, Michael Moore II, Charles Wesley Boane II, Franklin Dean and Russ Ragan.
Burial was in New Haven Cemetery near Ridgely.
He was born May 8, 1942, in Lake County, Tenn., to the late Elizabeth Lou Luckett Markham and Finis Clifton Markham.
He served eight years with the Army National Guard.
He was a member of Willingham Memorial Baptist Church.
He married Betty Jo Miller, who preceded him in death.
He leaves a daughter, Tammy Markham Chism of Newbern; a son, Eric Markkham of Newbern; six sisters, Brenda Stanfill and Sandra Roberson, both of Dyersburg, Patsy Joyce, Sherry Kuykendall and Linda Ragan, all of Ridgely, Charlotte Moore of Tiptonville; three brothers, Ray Markham of Newbern, Mack Markham of Jackson and Danny Markham of Ridgely; four grandchildren, Hunter Alston, Braiden Chism, Shelby-Lyn Markham and Sara Beth Markham.
Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Parrish.
James Ruben Humphreys
James Ruben Humphreys, 73, of Hornbeak, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Jackson regional hospital. He was a farmer.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, at White-Mahon Funeral Home in Troy, with the Rev. Robert Johnson officiating.
Pallbearers were nephews.
Burial was in Hornbeak City Cemetery.
He was born March 16, 1930, in Lake County to the late Clara Lorene Cunningham Humphreys and Ruben Humphreys.
He married Virginia Sue Abbott Feb. 28, 1953, and she survives.
He was a Baptist.
He leaves his wife, Virginia Sue Humphreys, of Hornbeak; two daughters and a son-in-law, Theresa Gail Humphreys of Hornbeak and Sherry and Jackie Howell of Ridgely; his brother, Dallas Humphreys of Tiptonville; three half sisters, Betty Joyce Stout of Gleason, Vickie Clemons of Paris and Wanda Gail Stafford of Bells; and three half brothers, James Ray Evans of Troy and Junior Evans and Paul Dennis Evans, both of Dresden.
He was also preceded in death by his half brother, Tom Evans; his half sister, Linda Reynolds; and his sister, Marie Robinson.
