Edwin Coleman Wood
Edwin Coleman Wood, 87, known to all as “Coleman”, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Ridgely Care and Rehabilitation Center, where he was a patient. He was a retired farmer and Esso bulk plant and service station owner.
Visitation was Sunday evening at Ridgely Chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home.
Services were at 11 a.m. Monday, June 21, at the chapel, with the Rev. Houston Northcutt and the Rev. Macky Prince officiating.
Pallbearers were grandsons, Dolphus Jordan, Chris Batts, Tim Bargery, Ronald Wood, Mike Wood and Gilbert Wood. Honorary pallbearers were great-grandsons.
Burial was in New Haven Cemetery of Ridgely.
He was born April 12, 1917, in Lake County, in the community called “Turnertown”, to the late Edith Wilcox Wood and Walter Truman Wood.
He married Karnese Shell Deal on Feb. 6, 1968, and she survives.
He was a member of Cottonwood Grove Baptist Church, served as Sunday School superintendent at Mooring Baptist Church, a former Mason, farmer, construction worker, associated with Wood’s Repair Shop, owner of Wood’s Esso Bulk Plant and Service Station. He was a lifetime hunter and fisherman.
He leaves his wife, Karnese Shell Wood of Ridgely; two sons, Robert Wood of Ridgely and Jerry Deal of Union City; two daughters, Wanda Bargery of Hornbeak and Bonita Batts of Clarksville; two brothers, Aubrey Wood and Carlton Wood, both of Ridgely; a sister, Frances Beal of Lucerne, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Nolan Wood and Thomas Wood; two great-great grandchildren.
Robbie Laverne Burton Taylor
Robbie Laverne Burton Taylor, 85, of Dyersburg, died Friday, June 18, 2004, at Reelfoot Manor Nursing Care of Tiptonville. She was the widow of Coolidge Taylor.
Visitation was from 11 to 2 p.m. Monday, June 21, at Ridgely Chapel of Curry Funeral Home.
Services were at 2 p.m. Monday at the chapel with Bro. R.M. Palmer officiating.
Pallbearers were Les Eastwood, Bennie Childress, Donnie Hutcheson, and family members.
Burial was in New Haven Cemetery of Ridgely.
She was born Oct. 16, 1918, in Obion County, Tenn., to the late Lulu Perdue Burton and George Burton.
She married Coolidge Taylor, who died Sept. 11, 2002.
She was a member of the Church of Christ.
She leaves a daughter, Peggy Pearson of Mokena, Ill.; two stepsisters, Bennie Murphy and Dolly Pulla, both of Dyersburg; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Coolidge Taylor; a son, Jackie Martin; two sisters, Dorothy Hutcheson and Geneva Lee; three stepsisters, Nina Cavness, Valerie Dotson and Myrtle Jones; two stepbrothers, J.C. Cavness and Ray Cavness.
Willie Mae Purvine
Willie Mae Purvine, 84, of Tiptonville, died June 10, 2004, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union City. She was a domestic worker.
Services were at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 17, at St. John #2 M.B. Church in Tiptonville, with the pastor, the Rev. Robert Gardner, officiating. Scripture was given by the Rev. Terry Bolden, prayer and remarks by Elder Stan Montgomery, acknowledgments by Sister Daisy Parks, and solos by Sister Lula Maze and Bro. Ollie Jones. The Rev. Gardner gave the eulogy, and there were choir selections.
Pallbearers were Raymond C. Pierce Jr., Melvin Swift, Eddie Cox, Marcus Smith, Roy Swift, and Ralph Warren.
Burial was in Citizens Cemetery of Tiptonville, with H.H. Hudson Funeral Home of Dyersburg in charge.
She was born Nov. 24, 1919, in Alamo, Tenn., to the late Martha Ann Nelson and John Henry Ford.
She joined church at an early age, and was a member of St. John #2 Missionary Baptist Church in Tiptonville.
She leaves four daughters, Verneal Maxwell of Allentown, Pa., and husband, Rufus, Ethelene Spann of North Miami, Fla., and husband Mose Jr., Willie Ann Pierce of Hickman, Ky., and husband, Raymond, and Denise Purvine of Tiptonville; a son, Donald Purvine of Hickman, Ky.; ten grandchildren, Brenda, Jean, Michael, Cassandra, Velvet, Tracy, Alice, Stephen, Raymond Jr., and Amanda; nine great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sons, three daughters, a sister and a grandchild.
Jimmy Dewayne “Gnat” Gamble
Jimmy Dewayne “Gnat” Gamble, 45, of Samburg, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, in a one-vehicle accident on Lake Road, Tiptonville.
A memorial service is being held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, June 23, at Samburg Pentecostal Church, with the Rev. James Alfred Bell officiating.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. Wednesday until time for the service.
He was born Oct. 17, 1958, in Obion County, to the late Mary Leon Reed Gamble and Ernest Paul Gamble.
He leaves four sisters, Janet Shirley and Libby Wade, both of Elbridge, Laura McTurner of Union City and Tammy Gamble of Samburg; four brothers, Johnny Johnson, Danny Johnson, Tom Johnson and Bobby Gamble, all of Samburg; 13 nieces and nephews.
Larry Gene Dotson
Larry Gene Dotson, 54, of Tiptonville, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Dyersburg Regional Medical Center. He was a self-employed carpenter, and a U.S. Army Veteran.
Visitation was Monday evening at Tiptonville Chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home.
Services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, at the chapel, with the Rev. Andy Martin, pastor of Tiptonville First Baptist Church, officiating.
Pallbearers were Tim McClure, Greg Windsor, Anthony Todd, Ryan Boyd, Billy Wally, and Lance O’Steen.
Honorary pallbearers were Jason Thomas, James Bock, Mike Dotson, Sammy Parker, Andy Morehead, Jimmy Simmons, Jeremy Hearn.
Burial was in Lake Memorial Gardens near Reelfoot Lake and Tiptonville.
He was born Dec. 6, 1949, in Tiptonville, to Jean Bell Dotson and Herbert Dotson.
He received his education at Margaret Newton Elementary, Lake County Junior High and Lake County High School.
He leaves his parents, Jean and Herbert Dotson of Tiptonville, a son, Larry Dotson Jr. of Tiptonville; a daughter, Laura Thomas of Tiptonville; two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Danny Dotson.
David Lee Warren
David Lee Warren, 56, of Tiptonville, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at Jackson-Madison County Hospital. He was a Vietnam War veteran.
Visitation was from 10 a.m. until time for the service at 12 noon at Johnson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Hickman, Ky., with the Rev. Steve Turner officiating.
Pallbearers were Joe Cheirs, Jerome Warren, Wayne Warren, James Cook, Larry Jackson and Mark Roberson. Honorary pallbearers were Elmer Caldwell, Raymond Alexander, Homer Winters, Russell Rodgers, Ronnie Alexander, Steve Cheirs and Albert Dinwiddle.
Burial was at Hickman City Cemetery with military honors.
He was born March 6, 1948, in Hickman, Ky., to the late Florine and Owen Warren.
He served in the Vietnam War, receiving the Bronze Star Medal.
He was a member of Johnson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Hickman.
He leaves his wife, Joyce Warren of Tiptonville; a son, Mike Bolden of Dyersburg; a brother, Hulon Warren of Paducah, Ky., two sisters, Mamie Jackson and Dorothy Pierce, both of Hickman; two grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clifford Warren and Leo Warren; two sisters, Katherine Smith and Bessie B. Byrd.
Chester W. Vance
Chester W. Vance, 80, of Tiptonville, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Dyersburg Regional Medical Center. He was a retired millwright and a World War II veteran in the U.S. Navy.
A resident of Ridgely Care and Rehabilitation at the time of his death, he was the widower of Patsy Salmon Vance.
Visitation was Friday evening at Tiptonville Chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home.
Services were at the chapel at 10 a.m. Saturday, with Don Reel, minister of Tiptonville Church of Christ, officiating, with Masons assisting.
Pallbearers were family and friends.
Burial was in Tiptonville City Cemetery.
He was born Dec. 5, 1923, in Tiptonville, to the late Irene Ferguson Vance and Whitney Vance.
He served in the U.S. Navy from Dec. 24, 1942, to Dec. 15, 1945, assigned to SC 732. His duties were as an electrician, and his rank Second Class. He was stationed mostly in the Pacific, in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines.
He was a Methodist.
He returned from the war and married Patsy Salmon of Tiptonville, who preceded him in death during the past year. They lived in Indiana before returning to Tiptonville after retirement.
He leaves a daughter, Debbie Green of Albuquerque, N.M.; a son, Terry Vance, of Hebron, Ind.; a brother, Gerald Vance, of Merrillville, Ind.; two grandchildren, Mason Green and Rachel Green.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Vance.
Memorials are suggested to the Cancer Society.
Charita Nicole Templeton
Charita Nicole Templeton, 27, of Dyersburg, died Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, at a Memphis hospital. She was the miraculous survivor of a heart transplant about 18 years ago, and was a student of Tiptonville and Lake County Schools, and a Lake County High School graduate.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, at St. John #2 Missionary Baptist Church, with the pastor, the Rev. Perry Woods, officiating. The Rev. Joe A. Scott gave the scripture reading, Elder Stan Montgomery, the prayer, and the pastor, the eulogy, “I Have Moved From My Old House to My New House”. Remarks were given by Rose Currin, Bradley Brashears, Daisy Parks, and Jameshia Clark. Solos included “I Won’t Complain” by Canita Kimble, “The Lord Is Holy” by Bonnie Ross, “Lord, I’m Ready” by Johnny Higgins, “Thy Will Be Done” by Ollie Jones, and “As I Journey” by the choir.
Pallbearers were Casey Scott, Johnny Higgins, Richard Nance, Timmy Higgins, Jerome Young and Tony Kimble. Honorary pallbearers were Donnie Ray Johnson and Marcus Randolph.
Burial was in Citizens Cemetery of Tiptonville.
She was born Dec. 6, 1976, in Battle Creek, Mich., to Katie Mae Kimble Cole and the late Samuel Lee Templeton.
She early became a member of St. John #2 Missionary Baptist Church in Tiptonville, where she sang in the Young Adult Choir until her health failed.
She moved with her family to Dyersburg about a year ago to be nearer health facilities.
She leaves her mother and father, Katie and Earnest Cole, of Dyersburg; two sisters, Lisa Diane Cole of Dyersburg and Tiara Cannon of Battle Creek, Mich.; six brothers, Samuel Lee Templeton Jr. of Dyersburg, Troy Templeton, Ronnie Templeton, both of Indianapolis, Ind., Tyrice Cannon of Battle Creek, Mich., Courtney Templeton of Tucson, Ariz., and Earnest J. Cole of Dyersburg; her grandmother, Louise Sanders of Dyersburg; a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews , and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Fannie Mae and Ray Kimble and the Rev. Howard Lee Kimble Sr.
Virginia Arrington Mayberry
Virginia Arrington Mayberry, 78, of Ridgely, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at McKenzie Rehabilitation and Healthcare. She was retired as manager of Lara Kendall School cafeteria and was the widow of Ralph Mayberry.
Visitation was Sunday evening at Curry’s Ridgely Chapel.
Services were at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, at First Baptist Church in Ridgely, with the Rev. John Coleman, of Dyer, officiating.
Music included “I Can Only Imagine”, “Surely the Presence” and “In The Garden”.
Pallbearers were Donald Larry Bargery, Billy Marvin, Kent Patterson, Jackie Flowers, Clifton Davis, and James Tolar. Honorary pallbearers were J.D. Mitchell, Charles Leake, Wilkes Moore, Joseph Tolar, and Don Taylor.
Burial was in New Haven Cemetery of Ridgely.
She was born August 29, 1926, to the late Nola Bethel Chadwick Arrington and Ollie (Doc) Arrington in Ridgely, Lake County, Tenn.
She was a high school graduate.
She married Ralph Mayberry, who preceded her in death.
She leaves two daughters, Donna Moore of Ridgely and Charlotte McGinnis of McKenzie; a sister, Judy Fuqua of Sharon; a brother, J.C. Arrington of Dyersburg; two grandchildren, Brent Griffin and Natalie Keiser; four great-grandchildren, Brittany Griffin, Chase Griffin, Olivia Keiser and Paine Keiser.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Lee Weaver.
