Thomas
Daniel Miller "Dan" Thomas, age 78, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 1996 in the VA Medical Center Hospital, Mountain Home, Tenn.
He was a native of Smyth County and a former resident of Glade Spring. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Rowena Thomas Thomas. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired employee of the Olin Corporation.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Gordon M. (Danny) and Janie Thomas, Chilhowie; one daughter and son-in-law, Ramona T. and Troy Caudill, Meadowview; five brothers: Harold Thomas, Mabie, W.Va., Arthur Thomas, Gene Thomas, Ralph Thomas, all of Baltimore, Md., Frank Thomas, Tewksbury, Mass.; two sisters, Mary Norris, Jessup, Md., and Julia Poole, Gaithersburg, Md.; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; a special friend, Elizabeth Ratliff, Chilhowie.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lawrence Sadler officiating. Burial was in Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring. Graveside military services were conducted by Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.

Whitmore
Claudine Burkholder Whitmore, age 84, died Friday, Nov. 22, 1996 at the Smyth County Community Hospital following a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. E.B.J. Whitmore Jr. in 1977.
Mrs. Whitmore was born on Sept. 25, 1912 in Bedford County to John Warren Burkholder and Annie Maude Atkinson Burkholder. She attended public school in Richmond and was a graduate of the St. Elizabeths Hospital School of Nursing in Richmond. She did graduate work at the Medical College of Virginia, the University of Virginia and Johns Hopkins University. She served as Director of Nursing at Petersburg General Hospital and later returned as Assistant Superintendent of St. Elizabeths Hospital. During World War II, she was the nursing representative for Virginia to the Roosevelt Commission and helped design what later became known as the Civil Defense Program. She also served as an instructor of nursing for the Public Health Service.
Mrs. Whitmore relocated to Marion in 1955 from Petersburg with her husband and family. She was active in Christ Episcopal Church in Marion and served in various capacities, including president of the church women and as a vestry member. She was active in civic affairs and served as a pink lady at Smyth County Community Hospital for over 30 years.
She is survived by two sons, Edwin B.J. Whitmore III of Marion and John W. Whitmore of Roanoke; two daughters, Ann W. Whitmore of Marion, and Mary W. Barton of Fredericksburg; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the scholarship fund at Christ Episcopal Church, 409 West Main St., Marion, VA 24354. The family will receive friends tonight, Nov. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church. A memorial service will be held Monday, Nov. 25, at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Michael Zumpf and the Rev. Edgar Ferrell officiating.

O'Quinn
Mrs. Mazie June O'Quinn, 53, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 1996 at her home.
She was a member of the House of Prayer Holiness Church.
Survivors include her husband, Arthur O'Quinn; two sons, Arthur Eugene O'Quinn and Frankie Lee O'Quinn, both of Saltville; three daughters, Sandra Lynn Surber and Pamela Kay Cook, both of Saltville, and Rita June Collins, Suffolk; four brothers, Junior Puckett, Sidney, Ohio, Carl Puckett, Greeneville, Tenn., Clayton Puckett, Glade Spring, and Everett Puckett, Manassas; three sisters, Pansy Grady, Bristol, Va., Dean Smith, Bristol, Tenn. and Dorothy Taylor, Manassas; ten grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Reynolds, officiating.

Boyer
John W. Boyer, age 85, of Sugar Grove, died Friday, Nov. 29, 1996 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Boyer was a member of the Assembly of God in Alexandria and Springfield. He retired from the DC Transit Authority, Local Union 689.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Darrell Hutton of Sugar Grove; three grandchildren: Phillip Hutton of Springfield, Karen Hubbard and husband Willie of Frederick, Md., and Duane Hutton of Sugar Grove; two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Jacob Hubbard; one brother, Richard Boyer of Virginia; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield with the Rev. Wendell Cover officiating. Burial will follow in Fairfax Memorial Park. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Associations, 919 North Michigan Ave., Chicago, Ill. 60611. The family will receive friends this afternoon at the Demaine Chapel from 1 to 2 p.m.

Lillian Blevins Collins, age 81, of Chilhowie, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 1996 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mrs. Collins was the widow of Dewey Collins. She was a retired employee of the Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie, and a member of the Mountain View United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons: James Ralph Blevins, Jackie Dean Blevins, and Dewey Edward Collins, all of Chilhowie; two daughters: Judy Collins Duncan, Saltville, and Helen Collins Widener, Seven Mile Ford; one stepson, W. Wayne Collins, Bristol; two stepdaughters, Irene Hughett, Christiansburg, and Gay Reedy, Chilhowie; four brothers: Millard Blevins, Earl Blevins, Clarence Blevins, all of Chilhowie, Leo Blevins of Columbia, S.C.; four sisters: Edith Barlow, Margaret Widener, both of Chilhowie, Agnes Blevins, Marion, and Aleene Kegley, Atkins; two stepbrothers: Raymond McCormick, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Clayton McCormick, Shrewsbury, Penn.; 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Crook
Harold Lewis Crook II, age 31, died Monday, Dec. 2, 1996 from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Mr. Crook was born in Bethesda, Md. He was a graduate of Marion Senior High School and was employed as a shop foreman with the World Wide Equipment Enterprises, Kenworth Division in Abingdon for over 12 years.
Survivors include his wife, Kim S. Crook, Marion; two children, Amber Dawn Crook and Harold Lewis Crook III, both of the home; his mother and stepfather, Louise and Doyle Cross, Marion; his father and stepmother, Harold and Pat Crook, Marion; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenny and Anita Crook, Maryville, Tenn.; one stepsister, Penny Harr, Blountville, Tenn.; his maternal grandmother, Ruby Shaver, Copperhill; his paternal grandmother, Helen Anderson, Campsprings, Md.; many other loving relatives.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. at Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment

Jack Dean Eggers, age 31, formerly of Chilhowie, died Friday, Nov. 29, 1996 from injuries received in an automobile accident. He was an employee of W&L Construction Co.
Survivors include one daughter, Summer Michelle Eggers, Chilhowie; his mother, Edith June Eggers, Marion; two sisters, Mary Grace South, North Wilkesboro, N.C., and Lois Lewis, Boone, N.C.; one brother, Blaine Eggers, Damascus; several other relatives.

Mary A. Church Hall, age 87, widow of Vernon S. Hall, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 1996 at the home of her daughter in Marion. Mrs. Hall was a member of the Cleghorn Valley Baptist Church.
She is survived by four daughters: Elsie Rose of Tampa, Fla., Mary Martha Largen, Louise Wyatt, and Barbara Ann Taylor, all of Marion; four sons: James V. Hall, Preston Hall, both of Marion, Mickey Hall and Jerry Hall, both of Abingdon; one stepdaughter, Stella Robinson of Marion; two stepsons, Chester Hall of Washington, Ga., and Fields Hall of Staunton; one brother, Robert Church of Saltville; four sisters: Pauline Wyrick of Saltville, Mattie Lou Pickens, Nancy Martin and Margaret Sweat, all of Mansfield, Ohio; 20 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren.

Rebecca Shelton Mason, age 94, of Saltville, died Friday, Nov. 29, 1996 in Greystone Health Care Center in Blountville, Tenn. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Robert B. Mason, Bristol, Tenn.; one daughter, Alice Carter, Inverness, Fla.; two brothers, W.J. Shelton, Chilhowie, and Dallas Shelton, Saltville; one sister, Susie Hockett, La Pata, Md.; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Lethia Inis Roark, age 75, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 1996 in Southeast Memorial Hospital, Houston, Texas.
She was a native of Johnson County, Tenn., and had lived in Damascus for many years before making her home with her daughter in Houston.
She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church in Houston, and the First Baptist Church in Damascus.
Survivors include two daughters, Virginia R. Smith, Houston, Texas, and Lisa Roark, Kingston, N.C.; one son, Raymond E. Surber, Manassas; two sisters, Anna Belle Surber, Damascus, and Viola Sheffield, Marion; one brother, Clayburn Surber, Damascus; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, in First Baptist Church, Damascus, with the Rev. Don Lasley officiating. Interment
was in Sunset Memorial Park.

Nina Mauree Day Singleton, age 64, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 1996 at her home in Saltville. She was formerly of Dickenson County.
Survivors include her husband, Fred Singleton, Saltville; several nieces and nephews.

Edith Frances Taylor, age 81, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 1996 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Taylor was a native of Washington County and had lived most of her life in Smyth County. She was the widow of Guy Taylor and was a member of the Adwolfe Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law: Frances Louise and Charlie Owens, Marion; two sons and daughters-in-law: Bobby E. and Becky Taylor, Chilhowie, and William L. "Billy" and Linda Taylor, Marion; one sister, Blanche Moretz, Bristol; five grandchildren: Tracey Taylor, Jane Taylor, Matthew Thompson, Joy Taylor, and Taryn Taylor.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Marion Boggs, the Rev. R.J. Cullop, and the Rev. David Neitch officiating. Interment
was in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat.

Christopher Dean Thomas, age 13, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 1996 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a student at the Smyth County Training Center and had participated in the Special Olympics.
Survivors include his mother, Loretta Thomas, Marion; his father, William Dean Thomas, Tannersville; one brother, Zachary Thomas of the home; maternal grandmother, Mattie Edwards, Marion; paternal grandmother, Nancy Thomas; his special daddy, David Barnes; and many other loving relatives also survive.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Lowman Valley Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Steve Hutton and the Rev. Charles Turley officiating. Interment
was in the church cemetery.

Jason Allan Williams, age 18, died Monday, Dec. 2, 1996 from injuries received in an automobile accident.
He was a native of Smyth County having lived all of his life in Marion. He was employed at the Smyth County Community Hospital in the Maintenance Department and was a 1995 graduate of Marion Senior High School.
Survivors include his parents, Millard and Virginia Williams, Marion; three sisters, Melinda Williams, Marion, Cindy Sullivan, Abingdon, and Lorinda Conklin, St. Paul, Minn.; his paternal grandmother, Virgie Williams, Chilhowie; three nieces, Tosha Thompson, Marion, Sarah Sullivan and Autumn Sullivan, both of Abingdon; one nephew, Mickey Thompson, Marion; a special friend, Tanjie Hutton.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Avery Sheets, the Rev. Otis Barker and the Rev. Dennis Eller officiating. Burial will follow in the Thomas Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
