Gladys Mae Fields, age 85, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 1996 at her home in Glade Spring. She was a member of Riverview Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Bill (Pauline) Lester, Glade Spring; two sisters-in-law, Gin Fields, Saltville, and Pearl Fields, Pembrooke; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, in Elizabeth Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Glade Spring Rescue Squad.

McDaniel
Cordelia McDaniel, age 94, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 1996 at her home in Konnarock. She was the widow of Andrew Fennis McDaniel. She was also preceded in death by her parents, George Andrew and Nancy Chellie Blevins Williams; two sons, Loyd Aaron McDaniel and Loren Kenneth McDaniel.
She was a native of Smyth County and was a member of the Azen Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters: Lorene McDaniel Blevins and June McDaniel Roop, both of Troutdale, Wanda McDaniel Blevins, Woodbridge; two sons, Lewis Andrew McDaniel, Ypsilanti, Mich., and Thomas Franklin McDaniel, Smicksburg, Penn.; two sisters, Leona Chapman and Rose Gorski, both of Hanover, Md.; one brother, George Andrew Williams Jr., Seattle, Wash.; one special granddaughter, Remonia Denton, Damascus; 24 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Fritz officiating. Burial will be in the McDaniel Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home or any time at the home.

McNeil
Tom McNeil, age 84, formerly of West Jefferson, N.C., died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1996 at his home in Damascus. He was a native of Ashe County , N.C.
Survivors include his wife, Altha Faw McNeil; one son, Barry McNeil, Litersburg, Md.; five daughters, Tommy Jean Cook, Pennsylvania, Rebecca Hensel, West Virginia, June Mumma and Mary Stover, both of Maryland, and Kimberly McNeil, Damascus; five brothers, Quincy McNeil and Iron McNeil, both of West Jefferson, N.C., Wint McNeil, West Virginia, Eugene McNeil, Wytheville and Oscar McNeil, Marion; three sisters, Edna Parsons, Ola Greer and Bell McNeil, all of West Jefferson; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, in Badger Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Lasley and the Rev. Wayne Jones officiating. Burial was in Calloway Cemetery.

Smith
Elmer C. Smith, age 80, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 1996 in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Full Gospel Temple in Rural Retreat, and was retired from the Virginia House Furniture Company. He was preceded in death by a son, Roger Lee Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Clara Mae Parks Smith of Rural Retreat; three sons, William Alfred Smith and Bobby Gene Smith, both of Dalton, Ga., and David Wayne Smith of Max Meadows; four daughters, Shirley Mae Widner, Linda JoAnn Akers, and Becky Jean Lane, all of Rural Retreat, and Janice Marie Baggett of Ringgold, Ga.; one sister, Lucille King of Crockett; one brother, Hugh Cleveland Smith of Rural Retreat; his mother-in-law, Ollie C. Parks of Rural Retreat; 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. in Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Hubert J. Meadows and the Rev. Kenneth Hall officiating. Burial will follow in New Bethel Cemetery in Wytheville. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

Stamper
Douglas Gilmore Stamper, age 72, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 1996 at his home in Chilhowie. He was a member of Chilhowie Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy for 27 years and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by his wife, Pepi Stamper, Chilhowie; two daughters, Karen Annette Mizerany, St. Louis, Mo., and Anna Baldwin, Marion; three sons, Doug "Gil" Stamper, Lynn, Mass., Kiki Stamper, Rocky Mount, N.C., and Carlo Stamper, King, N.C.; one sister, Trula Blevins, Chilhowie; one brother, Bobby Stamper, Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chuck Herrell and the Rev. Eugene Baldwin officiating. Interment
will follow in the Cleghorn Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary Ruth Taylor, age 77, of Saltville, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1996 in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie. She was a member of Riverview Presbyterian Church and was the widow of Henry Taylor.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Linkous, Pulaski, and Linda Catron, Marion; two brothers, Arthur Tolley, Glade Spring, and John Tolley, Saltville; one sister, Sue Moore, Sulphur, La.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Dwight S. Kilbourne officiating. Burial was in Mount Rose Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saltville Rescue Squad.

Mary S. "Lib" Shreeves Thompson, age 73, died Monday, Dec. 23, 1996 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was of the Methodist faith and was the widow of Lawrence H. Thompson.
Survivors include one son, James C. Thompson, Glade Spring; four daughters, Joyce Lee, Mrs. L.T. (Sue) Olinger, Mrs. Cecil (Peggy) Hayton, and Mrs. Wiley (Jackie) Robbins, all of Saltville; two sisters, Mrs. Scott (Edith) DeFriece, Blountville, Tenn., and Mrs. Cecil (Ruth) Williams, Saltville; three brothers, Earnest Shreeves, Richmond, Cecil M. "Mike" Shreeves, Glade Spring, and Toney Shreeves, Saltville; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Paul J. Whitehead, age 51, died Monday, Dec. 23, 1996 in Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, Tenn. He was a native of New Orleans, La.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Holmes Whitehead; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Jason and Sherri Nutter, Tannersville; one step-granddaughter, Laken Nutter, Tannersville; one stepdaughter, Kristi Nutter, Kingsport; one aunt and several cousins.

Robert Dean "Bobby" Grant, age 53, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 1996 at his home in Chilhowie.
Survivors include one daughter, Tina G. Underwood, Eagle Rock; one brother, Allen L. Grant, Saltville; five sisters: Irene Brannon, Damascus, Gladys Osborne, Morgantown, W.Va., Wanda Eastridge and Edith Smith, both of Chilhowie, and Virginia Chapman, Saltville; one grandson, Cody Allen Underwood; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 31, in Elizabeth Cemetery with the Rev. Shirley Carter officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made on behalf of the family.

Albert Samuel Henegar, age 52, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 1996 at his mother's home in Saltville. He was a native of Saltville, and was preceded in death by one daughter, April Henegar.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Henegar; one son, Richard Henegar, Roanoke; one daughter, Melissa Henegar; his mother, Iva Henegar, Saltville; one brother, Bill Henegar, Glade Spring; and one sister, Sue Teaters, Chilhowie.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Dec. 31, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Eller officiating. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery.

Mary Ann Hester, age 60, died Friday, Dec. 27, 1996 at her home in Marion.
She is survived by her husband, Charles M. Hester of Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles William and Laurie Hester of Marion; one sister, Frances Stillwell of Glade Spring.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, Dec. 30, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Sam Slemp officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Rethford
John Morrison Rethford, age 67, of Chilhowie, died Friday, Dec. 27, 1996 in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Rethford was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and had been employed by the Marion Bottling Company for 22 years and American Furniture in Chilhowie for 15 years.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Hash Rethford, Chilhowie; five daughters: Mary Widener and Barbara Billings, both of Marion, Patricia Burchett of Chilhowie, Trisha Harris of Rich Valley, and Regina Thomas of Atkins; one son, Roy W. Rethford of Marion; five sisters: Nancy Johnston of Boissevain, Lilly Saunders of Mullins, W.Va., Shirley Thompson of Knox, Ind., Lucille Taylor of Lorain, Ohio, and Ruby Westmoreland of Browns Mill, N.J.; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Blevins officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Joyce Blevins, P.O. Box 905, Marion, VA 24354.

Arfie Elizabeth Sheets Rich, age 92, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 1996 at the Wytheville Community Hospital.
Mrs. Rich was the widow of William B. Rich. She lived most of her life in Smyth County and had been living at the Birdmont Manor in Wytheville for the past two years. She was preceded in death by one son, Clarence R. Rich and an infant daughter.
She was a member of the Valley View Baptist Church and worked as a homemaker for most of her life.
Survivors include two sons, Roy Rich, Marion, and James Rich, Fairfax; four daughters: Pauline Greer and Viola Alexander, both of Marion, Sarah Eller, Chilhowie, and Edith McMillan, Monroe, N.C.; one brother, Rex Sheets, Buffalo, W.Va.; 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 1, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Neitch and the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment
will follow in the McCarter Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Hazel Hopkins Roberts, age 94, died Friday, Dec. 27, 1996 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was a member of Riverview Presbyterian Church and was the widow of Edward Scott Roberts. She was preceded in death by two sons, Ozie and James Roberts; and two daughters, Elizabeth Fowler and Susan Call.
Survivors include four sons, George Roberts, Joe Roberts and Noah Roberts, all of Saltville, and Richard Roberts, Marion; two daughters, Linda Petzold and Blanche Oberle, both of Ormond Beach, Fla.; one brother, John Hopkins, Saltville; two sisters, Josephine Frye, Chilhowie, and Katherine Reel, Marion; 21 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
