Cox
Kay Derieux Cox, age 60, of Atkins, died Sunday, April 30, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Cox was a member of the First Baptist Church in Highland Springs and was preceded in death by her father, Lawson Derieux.
Surviving are her husband, Shirrel D. Cox, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Cox and Victor Johnsey, Marion; two sons and daughter-in-law, Timothy D. and Anita Cox, Sugar Grove, and Forrest L. Cox, Atkins; four grandchildren, Joseph Allen Johnsey, Daniel Lee Johnsey, Brandon Tyler Cox, and Coby Ryan Cox; her mother, Elizabeth Kay Derieux, Richmond; two sisters, Ellen Cutright and Marian Long, both of Richmond.
Funeral services will be held today, May 3, at 2 p.m. at Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland with the Rev. Clayton Hounshell and the Rev. Victor Johnsey officiating. Interment
will follow in the Bethany Cemetery in Ceres.

Keen
Edward Shirl Keen, age 74, of Atkins, formerly of Richlands, died Thursday, April 27, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Keen was born in Raven and was a son of the late Marvin Hubbard Keen and Ziel Mason Biby Keen. He was a lifelong resident of the Atkins area and was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one son, Allen Keen; one daughter, Margaret Wix; and one brother, Franklin Keen.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Louise Keen; eight daughters, Pat and husband Roy Beckner of Salem; Bonnie Garrett of Roanoke; Georgia McWilliams, Brenda and husband Ken Cole, and Elizabeth and husband Wayne Compton, all of Marion; Sharon Barker of Gordensville; Stella and husband Richard Mullins of Atkins; and Sarah and husband Raymond Sheets of Sugar Grove; three sons, Alvin Keen of Marion, Luther and wife Rita Keen of Richlands, and Walter and wife Wilma Keen of Sugar Grove; five sisters, Pauline Perry, Swords Creek, Beulah Arrington, Norma Vance, Doris Grimmett and Rinda Osborne, all of Richlands; 28 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 1, at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Arnold Street and the Rev. Kathleen Stanley officiating. Interment
followed in the Westfork Cemetery in Richlands.

Rafferty
Martha Sprinkle Rafferty, age 90, died April 25, 2000 in Williamsburg.
Mrs. Rafferty was born in Marion on Sept. 8, 1909 the daughter and last surviving child of Belle Hampton Painter and Dr. Onyx Curwen Sprinkle. Her father was a druggist and lifelong resident of Marion. She attended Marion College and was a graduate of Agnes Scott College.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. James Gallman (Sara Bell), and two brothers, Sydney Crockett Sprinkle and Dr. William McCollum Sprinkle, both of Marion, and by two sisters, Mrs. John Archer Carter (Evelyn) and Mrs. Robert T. Allen (Mary).
Surviving are her husband, Philip Rafferty; one daughter, Mrs. James Connolly (Mary) of Pittsfield, Maine; one son, John Philip Rafferty of New York City; 11 grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Irma C. Sprinkle of Marion; several nieces and nephews.
A private interment
was held Thursday, April 27, at Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg.
Sturgill
Cleve Blaine Sturgill, age 90, died Friday, April 28, 2000 in the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
Mr. Sturgill was born Oct. 23, 1909 in Sturgill, N.C., the son of the late Isom and Lanta Sturgill. He was a member of the Sturgill Baptist Church and had retired from The Perry Point VA Hospital engineering department with over 30 years of service.
He was preceded in death by two spouses, Mary Viola Sturgill and Mary Jean Sturgill, and one son, Glendon Sturgill.
Surviving are his wife, Leona Rowland Sturgill; one son, C.B. Sturgill Jr., Perryville, Md.; two stepdaughters, Darlene R. Neitch, Chilhowie, and Phyllis R. Cox, Kingsport, Tenn.; one stepson, Jake Rowland, Chilhowie; four sisters, Zella Eller, Lansing, N.C., Luella Hubble, Marion, Vada Jackson, Elkton, Md., and Laura Kelly, Sparta, N.C.; one brother, Herbert Sturgill, Marion; four grandchildren, Glendon Sturgill Jr., Brandon Sturgill, Tina Hamm and Polly Baldwin; four step-grandchildren, Kim Neitch Widner, Chuck Neitch, Sandy Pack and Randy Cox; three step-great-grandchildren, Catherine D. Widner, Chelsea Neitch and Gabriel Neitch; special friend, Betty Cannon; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 30, at 2 p.m. in Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Haga and the Rev. Lloyd Day officiating. Graveside services were held Monday, May 1, at 3:30 p.m. in the Principio United Methodist Church Cemetery in Perryville, Md.

Alma O. White, age 83, died Friday, April 28, 2000 in Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Surviving are four sisters, Sybil Kilby, Marion, Blanch Francis of Crumpler, N.C., Ruth O. Cornett, Mouth of Wilson, and Faye Fluty of Roanoke.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 1, at 11 a.m. in Barnett’s Marion Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William T. Wing officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Anita Hamm Bear, age 26, of Groseclose, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, Daren Scott Bear of Groseclose; her parents, James and Linda Hamm of Marion; one sister and two brothers-in-law, Melanie and Jeff Miller of Honaker, and William J. Bear of Groseclose; her grandparents, Blanche Howerton of Atkins, Noah V. Cale and Marie Cale, both of Marion; her great-grandmother, Carrie Wassum of Atkins; one niece, Shiana Miller of Honaker; her father-in-law, Charles E. Bear Jr., Groseclose; her mother-in-law, Kathy Lyons and husband Spence of Nashville, Tenn.

Loretta Mae Hart Potts, age 65, died Monday, May 1, 2000 in Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation in Salisbury, N.C.
Mrs. Potts was born March 16, 1935 in Washington County, the daughter of the late Vascum O. Hart and Lockey Osborne Hart. She had lived in Kannapolis, N.C., for the past 36 years. She was a devout Christian and formerly attended Near the Cross Freewill Baptist Church. She formerly taught Sunday school at Clermont Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Archie Lee Potts. Kannapolis, N.C.; one son, Lee Potts, Kannapolis, N.C.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Raymond Ross and the Rev. Chuck Overcash Jr., officiating. Burial was in Sunset Cemetery.

Velvia Johnson Taylor, age 59, died Thursday, May 4, 2000 at her home in Chilhowie.
Surviving are her husband, Shirley Franklin Taylor; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Preston Price, and Karen and Dave Collins, all of Saltville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Venessa Taylor and Mikel and Vickie Taylor, all of Marion, and Patrick and Jennifer Taylor, Chilhowie; one brother, Henry Johnson, Saltville; two sisters, Beatrice Street, Buchanan County, and Virgie Whitt, Saltville; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted today, May 6, at 2 p.m. in Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Sage and the Rev. Mark Baumgardner officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Gardens of Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church. The body will be taken to the church one hour before services. Margaret Ann Dunford, age 58, died Sunday, May 7, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Surviving are four sons, David Lee Dunford of Atkins, Lester D. Dunford of Chilhowie, William D. Dunford and Herbert D. Martin, both of Marion; one daughter, Jennifer Ann Dunford of Roanoke; her father, Isaac D. Dunford; three sisters, Betty Sawyers of Pulaski, Lucy Keith of Aurora, Ill., and Bonnie L. Newman of Marion; three brothers, Charles A. Dunford of Marion, Jimmy Dunford of Trinidad, Colo., and Johnny Ray Dunford of Chilhowie; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; three daughters-in-law, Wanda Dunford, Atkins, Sonia Dunford, Chilhowie, and Sue Ann Dunford of Marion.

Martha Doane Keesee, age 66, of Saltville, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mrs. Keesee was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert W. "Bodie" Keesee.
Surviving are four sons, Jimmy Keesee, Jeff Keesee, Michael "Mutt" Keesee, all of Saltville, and Johnny Keesee, Chilhowie; one daughter, Debbie Scott Keesee, Marion; one brother, Buddy Doane, Saltville; four daughters-in-law, Debbie Keesee, Susie Keesee, Lori Keesee, and Robin Keesee; six grandchildren, Christy Mullins, T.J. Keesee, Gregory Keesee, Bodie Keesee, Cody Keesee, and Wesley Keesee.

Mrs. Kirk was the widow of Quentin Lyle Kirk. She was a beautician in Bel Air, Md., before moving to Virginia. She attended Valley View Baptist Church.

Jaunita S. Parks, age 83, died Sunday, May 7, 2000 in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.
Mrs. Parks was the widow of William Horton Parks. She spent many days working with day care and caring for children in her home. She loved to sing in the church choir.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, W.L. "Pete" and Mary Ann Parks of Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Delaine and Bob Shupe of Saltville; one sister, Elaine Sowers of Gate City; three grandchildren, the Rev. David S. Parks and wife Tami of Miami, Fla., Julia Davis and husband Lee of Charlotte, N.C., and Matthew Blevins of Marion; Matthew’s fiancée, Rebecca Perry of Union, W.Va.; three great-grandchildren, Joshua and Sarah Parks of Miami, Fla., and Allison Davis of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law.

Umbarger
Mae Sims Umbarger, age 84, died Saturday, May 6, 2000 in Clarksville, Tenn.
Mrs. Umbarger was born April 14, 1916 in Marion, a daughter of the late Henry and Daisy Evans Sims. She married Garland (Nap) Umbarger on Dec. 21, 1932 in Marion. The marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden L.D.S. Temple in Ogden, Utah. She was employed with Southwestern State Hospital for 12 years. In March of 1955, she moved to Ogden, Utah and was employed with McKay-Dee Hospital where she retired after 27 years.
She was a member of the American Business Womens Club and the Cosmopolitan Club.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Umbarger was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rhonda Sawyers.
Surviving are four daughters, Joan Sawyers of Marion, Charlotte Parks of Atkins, Dorris Ross of Clarksville, Tenn., and Barbara Olsen of Riverdale, Utah; one brother, Fremont Sims of Lancaster, Calif.; two sisters, Louise Hutton of Staunton, and Edith Corvin of Clarksville, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sons-in-law, William Sawyers, Marion, Roby Parks Sr., Atkins, Robert Ross, Clarksville, Tenn., and Robert Olsen, Riverdale, Utah.

Flossie Jones Anderson, age 81, died Thursday, May 11, 2000 in Francis Marion Manor.
Mrs. Anderson was born Sept. 27, 1918 in the Laurel Springs Community of Smyth County. She was the widow of John Mahlon Anderson Sr., and the daughter of John Rush and Hattie Ann (Long) Jones; the granddaughter of Ambrose B. and Sarah Elizabeth Jones and Emory McDonald and Sarah R. (Trent) Long. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Mary Washington Chapter.
She was preceded in death by seven brothers: Cebert Jones, Estil Jones, Albert Jones, Fred Jones, Gene Jones, Ernest Jones, and John Jones; and one sister, Sarah Alice Berry.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, John M. and Judith F. Anderson, Mauldin, S.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda C. and Clayborne B. Gwyn, Marion; one brother, George W. Jones, Maroon; six grandchildren, Robin Prescott, Rand Copeland, Beth Anderson, Todd Copeland, Kay Melba and Bryan Copeland; seven great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, Cindy, Amy, Margie and Leigh Ann; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Monday, May 15, at 10 a.m. in Roselawn Cemetery with the Rev. Buddy Miller officiating.
