Boswell
Ruby McKaughan Boswell, age 89, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Boswell was a member of the Atkins First Church of God and a former member of the Marion Pilot Club. She was active in the Eastern Star in Hyattsville, Md., having served as Worthy Matron.
She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy McNeil Cortner and husband Dayton of Marion; two grandchildren, Roger Allen McNeil and wife Amy and James Avery McNeil and wife Teresa, all of Marion; three great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; eight step-great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 11, at 10 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Grady Byrd and the Rev. Ron Whitener officiating. Burial followed in Wassum Cemetery in Atkins.

Bruzzo
Joseph Bruzzo, age 68, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Bruzzo was born in New York to the late John Harry and Ethel Louise Bruzzo and had lived most of his life there. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, a lifelong member of the Lynbrook, N.Y., Fire Department, and a member of the Richmond Hill Moose Lodge #14 in Queens, N.Y.
Surviving are his wife, Lillian Lucille Bruzzo, Marion; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Peter and Roseann Bruzzo, Marion, Jeffrey Thomas and Lourdes Bruzzo, and John Harry and Deborah Bruzzo, all of Valley Stream, N.Y.; one sister, Louise Kunkel, Odessa, Texas; six grandchildren, Joseph John Bruzzo II, Elizabeth Ann Bruzzo, Kevin Bruzzo, Kenith Bruzzo, Emily Marie Bruzzo, Aaron Joseph Bruzzo; one great-grandchild, Alexis Johnson.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 15, in Lynbrook, N.Y. Interment
will follow in the Rockville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to the First United Methodist Church, 115 S. Church St., Marion, VA 24354.

Emily D. Sage Harris, age 91, of Montpelier, Ind., formerly of Wythe County, died Thursday, May 11, 2000 at her home.
Mrs. Harris was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Cephis and Vina Lanter Grubb. She was a member of the Bluffton Church of God in Bluffton, Ind., and was preceded in death by her first husband, Ingram W. Sage; two sons, I.W. Sage Jr., Robert F. Sage; and two daughters, Mildred Mix and Shirley Sage.
She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, James W. and Juanita Sage Sr., Blacksburg, Hurley W. and Becky Sage, Rural Retreat, Kenneth R. and Mary Sage, Montpelier, Ind., and Ernest G. and Belenda Sage, Marion; two daughters, Cathy Todoran, Bluffton, Ind., and Mrs. Darnell (Jewel) Vanover, Montpelier, Ind.; her second husband, Stonewall Jackson Harris, Marion; 46 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 15, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clayton Hounshell officiating. Interment
will follow in the Fairview United Methodist Church Cemetery in Rural Retreat. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 14, at the funeral home.

Janie Kirby Lawson, age 60, died Thursday, May 11, at her home in Chilhowie.
Surviving are her husband, Robert L. Lawson; four sons and one daughter-in-law, James Lee Kirby, Patrick Kirby, both of Marion, William L. Kirby of Holiday, Fla., and Jeffrey Wayne and Dana Jackson of Chilhowie; one granddaughter, Kianna S. Lois Frye Smith, age 65, of Saltville, died Thursday, May 11, 2000 at the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Surviving are her husband, Charles W. Smith; two sons, Charlie Smith, Saltville, and Joe Frye, Meadowview; one daughter, Dodie Frye, Marion; three brothers, Harry L. Frye, Reynolds Popie Frye and Ralph A. Frye, all of Saltville; two daughters-in-law, Linda Frye and Angel Smith; four grandchildren, Joey Frye, Shana Rector, Colten Smith and Shane Smith.

Tolliver
Carrie Tolliver, age 81, of Princeton, W.Va., died Tuesday, May 9, 2000 at the Retirement Village at Glenwood Park.
Mrs. Tolliver was born Aug. 30, 1918 at Northfork, W.Va., the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Sexton Privett. She was a devoted homemaker, mother and grandmother and was of the Protestant faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennie Tolliver; a daughter, Opal Mae Mawalls; great-granddaughter, Jacquelyn Mawalls; seven brothers, Howard Privett, Charlie Privett, Troy Privett, Jessie Privett, Ambrose Privett, Carl Privett, Wiley Privett; and three sisters, Pearl Thomas, Edna Lyles, and Mary Whitaker.
Surviving are five sisters, Ruby Noonkester, Bel Air, Md., Hazel Catron, Pierpoint, W.Va., Bessie Brown, Piney Creek, N.C., Alice Powers, Marion, and Virgie Privett, Maben, W.Va.; one brother, Roby Privett, Troutdale; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Raymond Donald Burris Sr., age 61, died Sunday, May 14, 2000 at his home in Rural Retreat.
Mr. Burris was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Raymond Gleaves and Virgie Ellen Cornett Burris. He was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a member of the Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge #226 A.F. & A.M., and the Rural Retreat American Legion Post #229.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert P. Burris; a sister, Locky May Burris; and a great-great-grandson, Timothy Thompson McCaughrean Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Betty L. Burris, of Rural Retreat; one daughter, Christine M. Burris, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Raymond D. Jr. and Kathleen Burris of Virginia Beach; two sisters and brother-in-law, Mary and Bill Englar, Abingdon, Md., and Linda B. Loretta Moore Fisher died Saturday, May 13, 2000 at her home in Marion.
Mrs. Fisher was a faithful member of the Marion Gospel Chapel.
She is survived by her husband, John K. Fisher of Marion; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Nancy and Bob Thompson, and Lee Etta Buchanan, all of Marion; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Clarence and Joyce Moore, Dennis and Jo Ann Moore, all of Saltville, and Kate Fisher Litton of Marion; two nieces and two nephews.

Mark Kevin Griffey, age 32, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000 at his home in Saltville.
Mr. Griffey was a truck driver for MXI Trucking in Abingdon. He loved to play music.

John Milton "Sonny" Payne Jr., age 70, died Friday, May 12, 2000 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Payne was a native of Northfork and had been a resident of Saltville for eight years before moving to Bristol in 1960. He was a Protestant and was employed with Piggly Wiggle Stores in Saltville and Glade Spring as a meatcutter.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Driver Payne, Bristol; several cousins including a special cousin, Charles "Sol" Payne, Bristol; special friends, Raymond and Clara Zartman, Norfolk; caregivers, Melvin Smeltzer, Carolyn Routh and Elsie Surber.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, May 14, at 8 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Benny Bowman officiating. Committal services were conducted Monday, May 15, at 2 p.m. in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Robert Rouse, age 74, died Saturday, May 13, 2000 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
Mr. Rouse was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Carrie Rouse and a brother, Ernest Rouse.
